Bill Cowher and several others in the league have already stated that this was common practice. Most of the people who still bring up Spygate are bitter fans of inferior teams.

Stop it, he did it AFTER being warned by the league to stop. And I want a citation for the Cowher comment. No other coach said what Bill Belichick did was common practice.

They were filming something that's out in the wide open for anyone to see. Jeez, it's not like they were filming something really all that secretive. All 60,000 fans in the stadium could look at the defensive coach's signals. Jimmy Johnson and Bill Cowher admitted to doing the same thing. Plus, coaches switch the signals from game to game. It comes down to execution on the field. Spygate was way overblown, and pathetic fans just want to use that excuse when their team loses to the Patriots.

    LOL...

  • @TELEVISIONARCHIVES
    @TELEVISIONARCHIVES 10 лет назад +2

Spygate was nothing. The NFL didn't even notice it when other teams did it in 2006 when they changed the rule. And that's the job of the NFL. In fact if they wanted to spy they would never have allowed him to film on the sidelines in view and be seen. And the video wasn't even used in real time. The opposing team can look at the signals being called just by looking at the coach across the field in real time. And every team changes signals in every game. Everyone knows that. Eric Mangini who told the NFL about the taping regretted it 4 years later. It thought they would just take the camera away and not have it blow up the way it did. And notice they've won a Superbowl since then . And they have in fact won more games since the taping cost. And one tape was in fact leaded to the press. It was 90 percent filming cheerleaders. No kidding.

The whole spygate thing boils down to this:
    1. The NFL rule against taping says you can't "use it during a game." Belichick's interpretation was correct.
    2. The memo was absolute in banning all taping, unlike the rule.
    3. Twice in 2006, the NFL said it was OK with illegal taping, onc after a Phins-Patriots game, once after a Jets-Patriots game, when both the Phins and Jets were caught doing it.
Why would the Patriots take the memo seriously when the NFL didn't take it seriously?

Belichick does make a point with the availability of the signals. The interviewer mentions that although you can see and take notes of signals in the game, you can't use a videotaped signal to analyze and go over. Sure you can. Since people do take notes of signals in the game, they can write down what the signals are and at what time the defense uses them so you can backtrack and look at exactly what situations teams have used them in. Every team watches game tape, so you can always go back and cross reference those notes with the gametape. This would yield the same results as actually taping the signals.

The NFL needs to suspend Belichick for a year. That would be a just punishment in response to these eight new illegal videotapes going back all the way to the Patriots' 2000 season.
Of course, it's obvious that Goodell and the NFL owners want this to go away. They know that it raises questions about the legitimacy of one of their signature teams and they're insulting the intelligence of their fans - not always an easy thing to do - by being so dismissive.

  • @infiniticreativelandscaped2852
    @infiniticreativelandscaped2852 10 лет назад +10

    Before the haters get started
Most of the Patriot haters that talk about “SPYGATE” on a regular basis have NO IDEA what it was about, or the time table in question. It’s funny to me that they think it was cheating, or in anyway,
negates the Pats 3 rings… Here is a history lesson for you so the next time you want to talk about “SPYGATE”, you actually know what happened!
“SPYGATE” is in the reference to the illegal taping of defensive signals from the sidelines, for viewing AFTER THE GAME, which was deemed against the rules back in 2006.
This new rule was established in a memo from Roger Goodell’s office and sent to ALL teams in the NFL. Not just the Pats… Let me repeat… This memo was sent to ALL TEAMS IN THE NFL…
The reason being is because “SPYGATE” had likely been done by several teams in the NFL for DECADES, and NO WHERE IN THE RULE BOOK did it say it couldn’t be done.
The rules clearly stated that you couldn’t tape from the sidelines t use that information for assistance DURING the game. It said NOTHING ABOUT TAPING FROM THE SIDELINES TO REVIEW THAT INFORMATION AFTER THE GAME. Which is EXACTLY what we are talking about!
With that being said, the actual “SPYGATE” controversy is about the Patriots continuing to tape these signals from the date the memo was sent out in 2006, to their 2007 season opener against the Jets on 9/9/2007.
Anytime, before this memo in 2006, including their 3 Super Bowl titles, IS NOT WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT.
What is in question is the 2007 preseason and the 2007 season opener against the Jets. THAT IS ALL,, So if you want to call the Pats cheaters during that 1 year time frame, but all means. They were CHEATERS. Too bad for your hater narrative, all of the Pats 3 rings were won before 2006. So what they were doing at that time WAS NOT CHEATING!
Could someone intelligent please explain to me how a rule that came out in 07, and a reminder memo that came out in preseason 07, and the pats were caught in game one of 07, had a dam thing to do with any of there three sb championships that they won years prior. Just sayin’
Fox NFL Sunday, September 16, 2007.
Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson said, “This is exactly how I was told to do it 18 years ago by a Kansas City Chiefs scout. I tried it, but I didn’t think it helped us.” Johnson also said, “Bill Belichick was wrong because he videotaped signals after a memo was sent out to all of the teams saying not to do it. But what irritates me is hearing some reactions from players and coaches. These players don’t know what their coaches are doing. And some of the coaches have selective amnesia because I know for a fact there were various teams doing this. That’s why the memo was sent to everybody.”
Oh also, as for the AFC East being a cake walk, do some real research before ya’ll spout off looking and sounding totally clueless, and a mere make believe football fan
Winning percentage per division since 2002:
    AFC East: .525
    NFC East: .518
    NFC South: .515
    AFC South: .512
    AFC North: .509
    AFC West: .488
    NFC North: .480
    NFC West: .453
So deal with it, most successful NFL franchise in over a decade. The funny thing with these blogs are the ones that complain the most have never even been in sniffing distance of a championship.

"While the Patriots were taping opposing signals, they won 69.3 percent of their 127 games (including the playoffs), but since they ostensibly quit the practice, their winning percentage has been even higher - 75.6 percent - in 123 games. At a glance, it seems rule-bending didn’t add much of note to the Patriots’ chances of winning." I am a Chargers fan so this is coming from a completely unbiased angle. Although of course they're are many surrounding factors included in a teams success, I really find it funny that people discredit the Pats to such a degree. Minus all the spying, the talent and effort on those Super Bowl teams was unsurpassed. All the big plays and clutch moments they had on both sides of the ball are completely discredited now as if the spying caused them to occur lol. I understand why it could be seen as an advantage and it should be punished of course but I mean at least give them some credit. They were one hell of a football team. And yes they haven't won a super bowl since, but they're winning percentage afterwards has only risen by 6% since then. They've remained the most consistently dominant team in the NFL. What does that tell me ? The Pats game planning, preparation, and execution were the main reasons for their success. They've made it to multiple AFC champ games since, they just haven't been able to finish out. Again, im a massive Chargers fan, I just feel that the Pats deserve more credit for their successes then they are generally given and I like to give credit where it's due.

Armen Keteyain is hard to trust, just go look at the interview he did with Roddy Piper when Armen edited the interview to make it seem that Roddy was taking shots at WWE when he wasn't. I became A Patriots fan in November 2001 when my dad took me to a game vs Buffalo. I then saw the Pats win 3 out of 4 Super Bowls and now lose the 2 Super Bowls in Heartbreaking fashion. To say the Reason for those 2 losses is Spygate is BS! I am a Pats fan but not your average fan

That's why cheaters never win. They got caught and I don't think it affected the season since they caught it in the first game. But the integrity of the game was jeopardized, and that in itself was unforgivable.

Did you not understand what he was saying? It seems like you have no understanding of the context. He was saying he couldnt recognize Walsh on the street, or in a police line-up. I don't think Walsh wears a patriots uniform everywhere he goes. This is all just a technicality that had no reall impact on the games, admit it. Yes he broke a minor rule, yes he was punished its done with. To say that contributed in to the 3 superbowls is laughable. He'll just put 5 more in the press box to study.

I think he was scapegoated for something that probably more than a few teams do. In any case, he was caught, punished, and still went to the Super Bowl twice. True he didn't win either but he came darn close, and the Patriots are still very much a force to be reckoned with during the regular season.

If anyone is still talking about the spygate scandal at this point, then that person must be pretty bored and stupid. Not ony were the patriots not the only team to use this technique (because every coach should try to do whatever it takes to gain a competitive edge at the NFL level), but didn't we prove that using this technique had little to no effect on the Patriots' winning ways? In 2007 they went 16-0 in the regular season! In 2010 they are currently 13-2 and #1 in the league! Get over it!

as far as you boasting that you are in law school,as a Attorney or not which i happen to be it is obvious that bill was answering the questions truthfully he wasnt hiding anything, this was after he was already punished by the league he had nothing to hide.filming signals was deemed illegal in 06, he was guilty of it, he took it on the chin, while all of the other coaches packed their cameras up and let out a sigh of relief he was a man he didnt point fingers.good luck on your bar exam kid

First of all, thanks for making this post personal. Regardless, as an attorney I am sure you understand that there are reasonable interpretations of rules and then there are the interpretations that lawyers come up with in a last ditch effort to save face for a client. In these situations attorneys sometimes rely on counterintuitive yet logical interpretations that stretch the boundaries of a rule to the point where conventional wisdom would suggest absurdity. Just my opinion. Nothing personal

I think this really was an honest mistake on their part. It'd be a lie to say that most of the teams in the NFL don't try to figure out what the signals are, either on the sideline or on the field, especially in the case of Peyton Manning. With that being said, I think with the way how this scandal is hanging over the Patriots heads, it's created more pressure for them to perform in the playoffs. That stigma, may even help explain why they've uncharacteristically lost games they should have won.

  • @sendnymail

What the hell does Specter know about football? what right does he have to step in on this situation? It has already been handled, and everybody shuold get over it. In pro football, A team could know exactly what the opposition is going to run, and it does NOT make a lick of a difference if the players can not perform.Isn't what walsh got fired for illegal to? It is illegal to record any private conversation without the other person knowing.this guy is just trying to get his 15 minutes of fame.

Filming signals doesn't do much good.
Ever notice how there are two or three coaches flashing signals from the sideline?
Only one coach is the "hot read". The other two are fakes. Trying to figure out which coach is "hot" is more trouble than it's worth because the hot coach alternates from play to play.
It's much easier to guess the play from the body language of individual players.
If it's a pass play a guard might rock back on his heels but shift his weight slightly forward if it's a run. Brady is a wizard on reading the body language of linebackers and cornerbacks.

Have other coaches video taped signals? We're not sure. They may have prior to the 2006 memo, but unless they come out and admit it now then we won't know for sure. What we DO know for sure is that other coaches and teams have stolen signals via binoculars, notepads, audio recording devices, lipreaders, etc, and they still continue to do that to this day. Stealing signals is not against the rules, VIDEO TAPING the opponents signals is against the rules.

How about instead of Goddell having "integrity" checks on insignificant shit like this every team did, he finds out why some officiating crews have racked up discrepancies in up to 800 yards in judgement only calls over the course of a season. It's amazing how just breathing on a guy will get you a pass interference call now with some of these officials. Remember when a receiver getting laid out was cause his qb left him exposed?

I agree. But even if you have the other teams signals, and they all do. You still have to make the play. Randy still has to leap over defenders and fight to catch the pass in double coverage. You still have to physically out play. In that way signals are useless. If they are good simply because they cheat, why are they winning since the signal taping stopped??? They are still good and there's nothing anyone can do about it and that's why other fans & even the NFL has a problem with it...
