  • Join me on this little macro adventure at a suburban reserve in Melbourne and I'll show you several images I captured with and without the Raynox DCR-250 on the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS.
    This is one of the most versatile combinations out there in my opinion that can provide you with both extra magnification and also the ability to record amazing videos without having to change lenses.

      Many years ago, late 1980's, I did a lot of macro video of insects, using an Amiga Computer & a Sinclair Spectrum computer, long before PC's were able to capture and edit video. How things have changed since those days. I have a past history in medical & scientific imaging alog with a background in Pathology. My photographic and medical background were combined over many years in forensic pathology and crime scene investigation, where macro and photomicrography were a key part of my daily work when not in the mortuary etc. Back then I had equipment one outside the field could only dream about. Soft X-Ray imaging of insects, and many other creatures was a fascinating aspect of my work in my spare time, an interest I did not have the time for I would have liked. A major interest that consumes much of my spare time is astronomy and astrophotography. Let me know if this link works for you and takes you to my Google Photos albums. photos.google.com/albums. Awesome mate. I loved the photo of the weevil just before it took off and the stacked image at the beginning. It was good to see that your go to aperture is at the higher end. I tend to start at about f/9 for insects and go up or down from there. But I see a lot of people going straight to wide open and it’s something I get a few questions on. It’s as though people are afraid to shoot narrow. You made me laugh when you said “too fat for this s*”. Welcome to my world buddy! 😂

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  2 года назад +1

      Hey Scott, thanks a lot mate. I find that aperture to be still quite sharp w/o too much diffraction so as long as I have enough light, tend to go with that at 1:1 and beyond with this combo. Glad you had a laugh when I made that remark😁😁😁. Cheers😉

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hey there. While macro ring lite can be beneficial in certain situations, I only used to use it as an assist light for higher magnification macro in the field, but I never liked the specular highlights it created. The overall softer lighting is the main benefit for a setup like mine. I suggest you have a look at either Cygnustech or AK Diffuser as an alternative. Thanks a lot Scott! I haven’t used the MR-14EXII myself but it should be compatible . You might need to use ( multiple ) adapter rings, depending on the filter thread size of your lens but that shouldn’t be an issue. It might work even just the snap on mount adapter that comes with the DCR-250 . That is what I use on the EF100mm too. Cheers.

    Please advise what settings for apperture/shutter speed and ISO should be used when I use camera Canon 5D Mark III+ Canon Macro 100 mm EF 1:2.8 L USM+ Raynox DCR-250? It is so hard to find a focus, it is like never focusing. Thank you!

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  Месяц назад +1

      Hey Agne. It really depends on the power of your external flash, but for single shots I found the EF 100mm is still quite sharp at f/14 just to maximise depth of field without much diffraction, the shutter speed that I normally use varies between 1/80-1/200s and the ISO ranges between the base ISO of 100 and normally wouldn’t wanna push it over 1000, but the signal to noise ratio is pretty good on a FF camera like the 5D III, and post processing in LR with the use of Denoise AI you can push it much further without losing much image quality. Hope this helps as a starting point. Cheers

    How do you adjust the magnification ratio?

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  2 месяца назад

      Hi there. You can adjust the MR by rotating the focusing ring but with the DCR-250 attached you'll only be able to focus at a specific working distance. The reason why I used to like this setup with my old DSLRs is because of how easily you could attach and detach with the snap-on mount. Cheers

    Thanks for the video, what do you suggest it will work nicely with the Raynox or extension tubes. I see clarity faded away in your photos with the use of Raynox. Actually I am about to buy this Raynox 250 so need more detailed review or suggestion if this is good to have

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  2 года назад +1

      Raynox is perfectly fine and the image quality doesn’t degrade significantly when used in conjunction with a “real” macro lens. I like the fact that it’s versatile with the snap-on mount, gives me plenty of flexibility. I’d personally go for the Raynox but extension tubes can be even cheaper and fun to experiment with them. GL with whichever you decide to choose. Cheers

      @@peterviragphoto Thanks, do we need any adapter or raynox will be easily fixed on the 100mm lens, plus need suggestion on the diffuser as well, I didn't find it here in Saudi but mostly people made it manually ... new to Macro photography so asking such questions,

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  2 года назад

      The snap on lens works with filters between 52mm and 67mm. If your lens has a larger fikter diameter, a cheap step up ring will solve that. In regard to diffusers, I’ve been using this custom reflector/diffuser kit, here is my brief review from a while back: ruclips.net/video/geFiwms36e8/видео.html

    Hi Peter, will you recommend me to buy raynox DCR-250 for my Sony APSC with tamron 18-300mm? I wanna improve its magnification ratio because the lense has 1:2 in 18mm and 1:4 in 300mm.

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  2 года назад

      Hey there. Thanks for dropping by:) While it’s pretty difficult to use with a telephoto zoom lens, it will definitely improve the magnification ratio and also if you’ll be using it down the track with a dedicated macro lens it’ll be worth it I’m sure! Cheers

      @@peterviragphoto Or should I use reversed ring or even tube?

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  2 года назад

      You could try those too. The reason why I prefer the Raynox is because it’s more flexible and don’t have to disconnect the lens from the body and can vary the MR that way easier. Cheers

      @@peterviragphoto Oh thank you, watching other YT videos, I found that someone managed to get a good result using raynox and telephoto zoom Canon 100-400 f4,5-f5,6 with its original MR 0,3. I hope I can get a good result with my tamron 18-300mm. This will be just my first serious purchase for macro accessories, So I have to do research through internet in orde to avoid money wasting. A mi me va muy bien con el Raynox 150. No el 250 que no tengo. Uso un Sigma 105 mm F/2.8 EX DG Macro OS HSM. Lo veo suficiente. Creo que con el 250 el desenfoque, por escasa profundidad de campo, es mucho más difícil. Pero lo acabaré adquiriendo.

      Muchas gracias por mirar y por tu comentario. Nunca he usado el Raynox DCR-150, pero debido al mayor aumento del DCR-250, definitivamente necesitas comenzar a apilar el enfoque para ciertos sujetos. ¡Espero que te diviertas con él! ¡Gracias de nuevo y disfruta el resto de tu fin de semana!
