This is a wonderful version by Jerry Jeff & the GONZO Survivors, I can’t get enough of John Inman’s guitar work, that whole band is amazing. Love to see them tour a bunch of smaller venues with Django Walker keeping the “Scamp’s” legacy rolling.
I remember watching Jerry Jeff at a concert in Lafayette, Louisiana back in the day. It was a pretty good concert until he fell off the stage and a riot was narrowly averted after some people started tossing chairs around. Yeah, some fun times, eh? I saw him bunch more over the years and he was always terrific. But never quite as exciting. 😉 RIP and thanks for the music Jerry Jeff.
Freddie Krc on drums, John Inmon on lead guitar, Lloyd Maines on steel guitar, Bob Livingston on bass. Great band. How will we make it without Jerry Jeff?
I got to sit in with Ray Wiley Hubbard .Next night it was me,a cowgirl, botanical full of Wild Turkey,56 GMC stepside at a JERRY JEFF WALKER show in downtown TULSA.🎶🎸😎
Have been watching all the JJW I can find and think I figured out why we love him so. He's animated, funny, always making eye contact, little head bobs here and there, engaging stories, I could go on and on. I'm sure all those traits endeared him to people when he played on the streets.
A lot of folks seem to see this version in competition with Ian Tyson's version. I don't buy that...this is a tribute to Tyson, to make sure that even more folks would get to hear the song...Jerry Jeff Walker has always admitted his debt to the great western songwriters, and what a way to say "Thanks Ian Tyson" for creating such a witty and poetic bit of western art. :-)
My first purchase of JJW was a cassette, live in New Orleans, it had Mr. Bojango's. My second purchase was a CD, The Navajo Rug. Being from NM, it had a touching meaning. I miss him already...
John Inman makes this version with his slashing opening riff on that great black Tele, just gives this version some extra bite.....First saw this live version in 2018, "just a few years " after the video...as a 40+ year fan of JJW , great to see these songs live. JJW toured in Australia so long ago that I cannot even recall the year....pretty small band. Guess unless you are the Eagles or the great Jimmy Buffet ( 5 very memorable visits, but no more now I guess) , just too expensive to bring his standard band here. Thanks a million to those responsible for putting this magic video up.
Soo coooool , love Jerry Jeff, Clyde from Houston...if you're ever in Texas go to Lukinbac, Jerry Jeff was married there in the seventies, too cool, Clyde
Well it's two eggs up on whiskey toast Home fries on the side, You wash her down with the roadhouse coffee That burns up your inside, It's just a canyon, Colorado diner, A waitress I did love, We sat in the back 'neath an old stuffed bear, A worn out Navajo rug. Aye, aye, aye, Katie, Shades of red and blue Aye, aye, aye, Katie, Whatever became of the Navajo rug and you? Well, old Jack the boss, he left at six It was, 'Katie, bar the door'. She'd pull down that Navajo rug And we'd spread it across the floor, I saw lightning frame the sacred mountains The wooing of the turtle doves Just Iying next to Katie, On that old Navajo rug. Aye, aye, aye, Katie, Shades of red and blue Aye, aye, aye, Katie, Whatever became of the Navajo rug and you? Well, I saw old Jack about a year ago, Said the place burned to the ground, All he saved was an old bear tooth And Katie she left town, Well, Katie, got a souvenir too, Jack smiled as he spit out a big old plug, Well, you shoulda seen her coming through the smoke She was dragging that Navajo rug. Aye, aye, aye, Katie, Shades of red and blue Aye, aye, aye, Katie, Whatever became of the Navajo rug and you? So every time I cross the sacred mountains And lightning jumps above, It always takes me back in time To my long lost Katie love, You know everything keeps on a moving Everybody's on the go, Hey, you don't find things that last anymore Like a hand-woven Navajo. Aye, aye, aye, Katie, Shades of red and blue Aye, aye, aye, Katie, Whatever became of the Navajo rug and you!
Brings back goo memories of riding along through Denton County radio on KHYI and listening to good ol' jerry jeff...it's been years since I left Texas ....sniff...
I had never heard of this song until the other night. I moved to TX a year ago, and a friend from WY was visiting. We went to Cheatham St. Warehouse to listen to a local band. They did Someday Soon, and Ian's name came up. My friend commented that this (Navajo Rug) is one of his favorite songs, so I had to look it up. I have to agree with him - a great song, whether done by Ian or JJW.
Takes me way back to Los Patios in San Antonio with my great friends Jeff & Amber. He performed with Salado Creek flowing right behind the stage and the ambiance of Los Patios was awesome. Best venue ever.
I've liked Jerry Jeff & his style of music & story-telling, for many years now. This song is a great representative example of his wonderful talents - especially as a live performer. To me, he has always seemed like a 'western' .. or a "Texas" version .. of the same, basic 'troubadour', larrakin style embodied in Jimmy Buffett's type of music ... unique talents, both of em ....
Whenever Tom Russell performs it , the crowd always sings Jerry Jeff’s cover and Tom always says “that s the Jerry Jeff version. I like Jerry best I think. Happy birthday Jerry jeff
Like forty, forty five years ago a colleague asked me if I had heard the song Navajo rug. I shrugged it off until the internet was invented then many more years until I finally found and listened to it. Durn fine tune right up there with the best of true cowboy poetry.. The more I find these jewels the more I feel that the world will once again be filled with beautiful meaningful music. I just keep praying. And am grateful for what has been granted to me. Love your performance. thanks for posting it so we can all enjoy your performance.
BRod313 has nicely captured the best of Jerry Jeff Walker ... I wish he could put them ALL on a video ... or a set of videos. I just started ordering CDs, but I love to Watch Jerry Jeff Walker, sing, too. Because, he sings from his soul. Thanks, BRod313 ... This is all about pure JOY! Speaking of JOY, JJW has a Christmas album. Nice gift for newbies at Christmas ... to open up a new world to them. Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
these guys get a great sound even live....I love jerry's voice....I think that if Gary Cooper had been a country singer he would have sounded similar....thanks for posting this...wonderful music...from England.
Absolutely, Jerry Jeff has been in decline as a performer since the late 70's , and I say that with huge regret , even George Hamilton IV's version of this song is better , and yet at one time I rated JJW as the best performer in the world..
Better than the original, tbt. Less stiff. I'm from Alberta and my family is rodeo, so don't come at me. I just found this song spinning in my head today, and I always loved it growing up. But in revisiting, the Ian Tyson version is very contrived and stacato. This is much more what the song had become in my mind over the years. The storytelling quality that is inherent to the value of the song.
This song was actually written and recorded by Ian Tyson, a cowboy singer from Canada. Ian actually sang this on the Texas Connection. A good cover and I do agree that JJW was a jewel of cowboy music, as was Ian. Ian Tyson is still alive at 88. God bless you JJW. I just realized that you had passed.
@colindominy I saw Jerry Jeff with Jimmy Buffet in Amarillo, Texas on the same stage one night. We were dancing in the aisles and smoking huge joints and the cops never bothered us. I miss my youth.
I agree Coley, Ian is very talented and his career has certainly taken a bit of a turn since the early days of "Ian and Sylvia" to the western style he adopted back in the 70's. Ian also lives the life with his Canadian prairie ranch in Alberta. I also remember when both he and Sylvia (I'm not sure if they were divorced by then) hosted a weekly musical show on CTV back in the early 70's. It also featured their backup band "The Great Speckled Bird".
A wonderful pearl - or maybe it's a nugget? - of a tune. It gets regular airplay on Seattle's indie KBCS. Amazing what a simple doo wop progression can become in the hands of a master songwriter (Tyson) and performer (JJW).
@juiceman1965 I did not, but I can certainly picture, both of those guys are so friendly they could get along with a rattle snake...:-) How I miss the old TNN and Texas Connection, American Music Shop and the great live concert shows where I first came into knowing of such artists as Jerry Jeff, Shawn Colvin, Guy Clark, Tish Hinohosa, and so many others....Is there anyway we can make a business out of reselling these great alt and roots country bands?
I was named after this song and just listened to it for the first time this year!
Four years without this amazing man. So happy his music lives on and on.
RIP: Jerry Jeff (1942-2020)

One of the finest, and most ORIGINAL cowboy songs composed by the GREAT Ian Tyson.
Just like many songs Ian wrote.......anyone else could perform them better! Ian may have been a Great songwriter but he was a mediocre performer.
California6567 And don't forget Tom Russell .... he had a part in the writing.... love this tune..
@@brdwonder I FEEL SORRY FOR THAT COMMENT,,,,
@@brdwonder mediocre might be stretching things a bit. He really should have just stuck to writing.

I'm sure Ian Tyson felt that competition everytime he went to the post office to pick up one of those royalty checks lol
I didn’t hear him mention whose song it is.
You seem to think it's in competition. It's just another great version.
I agree with gurl
