    I just wired my very first guitar and it only took me like 4 hours because I have never soldered a dam thing in my life. I have spent as many hours watching dozens of people try to explain and show how it is done and NONE OF THEM gave me any level of confidence. THANK GOD FOR you having the ability to teach a 57 yr old man that is scared to death to get it wrong, but I have a high level of confidence I got it right because step by step I was able to follow along!! IT is not very pretty and I will let ya know if it works!

    Brilliant, thank you! One tip I use...I'll take a small file and scrape the finish off of the back the pot and melt a little solder on it. This way, when you solder the wires to the pot, it grabs right away.

    Very Good info here thanks! If you want to, just tin the backside area of the pot first, and then the ground wire separately. They would then flow together nicely when heated together at the same time without a fight and without the chance of melting the insulation from the center wire. 👍

    Cool vid, I have four wires on my switch craft toggle switch one black three white and are cloth covered, how does that solder into the set up? Also my jack plug already has cloth black and white wire solder on connected to the pot, My pick ups are plastic wires one red and two black wires (one thin and one thick) no braid what's the soldering for those ? Sorry to be a painq

    This is the best video on the net for this. Thanks so much. Does the bridge inner grounding wire built in the guitar have to go to bridge tone or volume? The wiring guide I was following shows it going to tone bujt it reaches across the whole guitar cavity to get there, seems long.

  • @plinke
    @plinke 6 лет назад +4

    Good job on these videos. I'm learning how to wire guitars and they're very helpful. One question regarding the braided outer wire coming from the switch: Do you really need to solder each braid to the back of the corresponding pot? Wouldn't you be able to just solder one wire to one of the pots as the braided wire is all connected at the switch per your other video about wiring a switch? Or is it just better to wire both?

    • @SixStringSupplies
      @SixStringSupplies  6 лет назад

      it's a good question and I often wonder myself. Technically only one of them (otherwise the switch isn't grounded) I have never tried it though so probably just best to solder them all, no risk of a ground loop

    • @Stratamania
      @Stratamania 5 лет назад

      An alternative would be to run a ground wire from one of the pots or the ground wire between them to the ground of the output jack. The braid of the output wire connects there also so that would work also provided the three braided wires of the harness are grounded together nearer the switch end as they are in this video.

    Hi, great video. I've been doing electronics for over 40 years now and I have only one question. Why on earth do you hold the solder so close to the end? Your hands don't seem to shake much, so you might try leaving about 3-4 inches past your fingers so you don't run out of solder so soon, so you can see what you're doing, and so your viewers can see what you're doing without your hands blocking everyone's view. It also prevents blisters which could affect yer playin'. Very good overall though!

    • @SixStringSupplies
      @SixStringSupplies  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching. Yeah only because I’m a bit clumsy and I’ve seen so many videos of people holding g the solder from what seems a mile away and i just can’t do it...I shake to much and lose all control.

  • @loraljohnson

    Great videos, but I was uneasy as close as you had the solder iron to the body of that Les Paul soldering the jack in. I usually put tape over the finish until I'm done soldering. Won't help if you hold the solder iron too long, but an accidental touch, it saves the day.

    Great video, thank you! Question, how hard is to adjust long shaft on an Epiphone Les Paul with maple cap? A short shaft probably won't work since the maple cap makes it ticket, I am assuming the short ones only work with LP Studio and other models with no cap or veneers. Wondering if the long ones come with some sort of but to adjust the height

    • @SixStringSupplies
      @SixStringSupplies  4 года назад +1

      Hi, thanks. Yes, if ever in doubt, long shaft fits any Les Paul model/copy Epiphone etc...because they come with two nuts to adjust height from inside the cavity. You would likely have to ream the volume/tone holes to 10mm though.

      I just did this with an Epi LP Standard. Used the long ones and did need to ream out the holes but it was simple not an issue. Also correct on the two nuts, I just measured the short shank with digital calipers then used the nuts to match that length.

    Often the hollow for the pots is routed so deep that when they sand the face there ix less than 1/4 inch which causes issues like that around the knobs

  • @emilehobo
    @emilehobo 5 лет назад

    I looked into the wiring. The connection to the bridge isn’t the main ground. I didn’t get it at first, but if you don’t have a connection from the strings to the ground, you get static hum because your strings become charged and that’s a problem, because they disrupt the magnetic field. The actual main ground is on the jack. The pickups when they respond to the fluctuations of the magnetized strings introducing a change in the otherwise static magnetic field, through induction cause current to flow. The electrons enter via the ground from the amp and the hot output provides the outstream of electrons to the amp. The resulting voltage provides the tone. The strings themselves don’t have the opportunity to really provide current other than the static we introduce by touching them.
