- In this captivating episode at Old Byrd Farm, we're not just tackling the wilderness beside the house, we're doing it under the spellbinding shadows of the 2024 Solar Eclipse! Last year, we embarked on a daunting mission to reclaim land swallowed by a jungle of invasive plants. This year, we've turned the tide, transforming what was once untamable into something we can mow over, a testament to persistence and hard work.
Join me as I navigate the Kubota through these previously overgrown areas, now subdued and part of our cultivated landscape. The satisfaction of mowing down what used to be a formidable thicket is unparalleled, and doing it under the eerie light of an eclipse adds a whole layer of awe to the experience.
This video is not just about the transformation of land; it's about the moments that remind us of our place in the cosmos. Mowing during the solar eclipse of 2024 serves as a powerful metaphor for change, growth, and the beauty of aligning with nature's cycles. Witness the blend of hard work and cosmic spectacle, only on Old Byrd Farm.
I am mind blown that I’m just able to mow this and it looks so great after!! We’ve come a long way, and all of this is also beneficial to keeping the house dried in and humidity free!

Mowing the yard and taking down a tree or two makes the yard actually look a lot bigger. I like how you took the tree up, roots and all, in one fell swoop (or two).🙂 It's been satisfying to watch the progress of not only the yard but the entire house.
What do you plan on doing with that extra space?? Expanding your garden maybe? Whatever it is I'm looking forward to seeing it. Even if you just leave it 'as is' it'll be nice to see it so open.
I think your "wetland grass" is 2 types from what I see. there is onion grass and the main plant you wanted to ID is bullrushes , which, is common in bogs , Peat bogs. but if you post a close up on the stems. leaves, , flowers or trunks of any plant, flower, bush or tree it would be better to ID them. I am curious have you ever located any old plans or any ground survey reports on the farm and your "wet spot" to see if there was a spring house or something there at one time? I also see a lot of "wild Chamomile " aka pineapple weed, and great for making tea! There might have been a pond and a spring there that has become grown over.
A lot of people don’t realize how long it takes to get to where you are now on the old Byrd farm. So much work has been done to the property and the house.
I totally agree!!!!! It's being well care and it's looking beautiful.. ❤❤❤❤❤
Love the outdoors around the bird farm it is so beautiful do you actually own the old bird farm or are you just working on it or cleaning it up for someone else
Robert you are an awesome man with a heart so big I love that you are so serious about saving cemeteries and dose lose in there resting place . God bless you and the other Robert and those that are behind the scenes God blee❤
Robert, I have been watching since the beginning. You have worked tirelessly and the fruits of your labor are beautiful
I've said this before. My grandparents cemetery was sold to a guy who thought he was going to build a business on the sight. He was just going to push the stone into the back and build. We stopped him, but we have tried to buy it but he's asking 5 X's what he paid for. The neighbor across the street watch it daily for us, and calls when they see anything being done to it. We are legally trespassing to go see our Grandparent gaves. I wish there were more like you Robert. I have such repect for you. Even if you get stuck on dirt roads with Mr. Dan. LOL
Lol
In some states he would be required to leave the graves alone and provide access for family members. He could build around them, but he couldn’t touch the graves.
@@design2c436 We found that out, he was just going to do it anyways. But we brought attention to the city and they stopped him. Of course the city doesn't want to take on the cemetery. We went to the city, newspaper, and as high as the governor. No help there. But he bought it, and without any of our aprrovals. As long as he leaves it alone, and we don't have any trouble cleaning our graves off . It's a stand off right now. My cousin that died in Vietnam is buried there along with Civil, and Revolutionary war. It should be protected. That's why I love watching Robert's Adventures Into History. He shows respect for cemeteries.
@@deborahdanhauer8525 Not in Pennsylvania. I know of a few people that can't even get premission to go see there own Father's grave. I'm glad I live in Michigan, we protect the cememteries.
@@SandyD2022 That’s sad, and should be against the law. Surely they could get a law passed to remedy that. Not many politicians would turn down a chance to show off such a law at election time.❤️🤗🐝
💜The graceful dance with the tree was awesome 😎
A spring fed pond would make Anne dog so happy!!
It’s simply amazing what you and your little orange Kubota have been able to do! Looks beautiful Robert!
I remember when it was nothing but thick thickets. Springtime is ALWAYS so busy with keeping ahead of the grass/weeds. They seem to grow overnight and then preparing the garden on top of everything….Yeah, busy is an understatement 😂😂 We don’t have a tractor. That is such a wonderful help!! Great work!
When I started watching you, I never would have guessed that you'd be able to mow that property. Congratulations on an amazing effort!!!
Kudos on being able to also mow swamp area looking good, looking real good. Sharpen up the chain saw & continue Sir Robert's War against killing the old creepy wisteria.
It looks so much better with the lawn mowed.😊 I'm glad you took the holly tree down. You can see the house better.
The best music can be found on The Old Byrd Farm.
The new rood still shines on The Old Brd Farm!!
Yea I remember when you couldn't walk 3' from the house in most areas, doing great Mr. Robert👍✌
Yes, thanks!
Robert, great to see you again and to see your mowing and getting the OBF all spiffy and cleaned up. Looks great. And the Monument for the forgotten cemetery, is awesome! amazxing what One Man can do. IF there were more of you Robert, in every state that cared enough to preserve history in their states, and preserve cemeteires as well, this country would be a better place..
It looks so much better after the mowing. What a difference! Great job, Robert!
Thank you Robert for sharing your joy as you reclaim your property.
I bet your neighbor is so happy that your farm is once again being taken care of and looking good.
Awesome not quite sure how you handle all the work that you do alone .. I sure hope I’m still alive to see the house finished and to see you sitting on the front porch chatting (love yr chats). 😊 great video my dear👍
I love watching you. In WY we have to baby trees, water and watch it grow exceedingly slow. And i love houses. It is a delight to see you cleanup and repair the old house.
I just love work. It's so fun to watch. LoL. You've got a great eye in regards to what you've decided to take out. Looks great.
Spring has sprung and mowing seems to be an event for all of us country folks with some land to take care of.
Trees tremble at the sound of the orange cranking up!
I always said Robert you done a good job 👏 👍clearing the ground and opening up the space 👏 👍 you can definitely see a big change there 👍 😀 you look a lot better now 😀 keep well 👍 😀 Andrew south wales uk 👌 👍 👏 😀 🇬🇧
Every time you mow it Robert it will get better looking. I think I would even mow that native grass so it can soak up some more of the water.
Unrecognizable. Wonderful
You might try to think about a pond in the swampy area. Dig it out deeper and make a spring feed pond for geese and ducks.
I remember the metal detector guys getting stuck in the driveway. LOL
Traveling back from Ohio on Tuesday, I saw a huge wisteria infestation, and thought of you.
That grassokks like Rush.
Looks great! Sell the holly trunk to some wood turners. They'd love it!
Awesome tractor skills there, Robert! 🥳🎉
You are sounding a lot better now Robert.
I’m all better!
So glad your lungs have cleared and your cough has resolved. We were really concerned for your well bring. Thank you, Heavenly Father, for your healing graces. We sing your praises. Amen.
'St's looking good. What a marvellous transformation, Robert. Alle Achtung . Isn't the roof looking good? Super.
Glad to see you doing better and more energetic. COVID is hell.
Oh yes I remember well how it looked when you started Robert with the old tractor. It's a credit to you sir. I'd say that swampy area is indeed a spring they can move. Mine did. I think it's because the underground flow deep down changes course. as we know rivers and streams can do in big floods. The farm is looking fabulous. Xxx
How beautiful the farm is coming along! Your doing wonderful Robert ❤️
You have a lot of ideas about the back swampy area. Good luck.
The property is looking good with all the mowing!
Well!
You pulled that tree down just like you knew what you were doing ....
Always feels good when a plan works out, doesn't it.
Always good to see you out on the farm, Robert. 🙂
Love the wall!
removing those couple trees made a hell of a difference! Good Call.... - jfm - Portland, OR
I remember when you .couldn't walk 3 ' from the house in most areas doing a great job Robert
Lookin' good!
Robert, Another fun and relaxing video, You're really good at doing those thanks
You doing a fine job. Looks a lot different from day one.👏🇺🇸
Been here since the beginning and it is so cool to see all the progress that has happened! All your hard work is paying off in dividends 💜💜💜
You are an inspiration to me to just get up and get it done. Thanks!
Wisteria.... the hysteria!... 😆
Up here in Ohio my bestie has it! It keeps her very busy every year keeping it tamed. She goes with it though; since it was a gift from her mom ( who's passed now) she can't part with it. 😢
We get that situation up here too. ❤
And with that said, Sir! You've done an amazing Job with everything on your plate there! 😊
That tall looking grass in the swamp is called Bullrush. That is what my daddy called it and it grew all around our pond when I was little. It wasnt planted, just came up on its own. Btw you've got the old farm looking good, so proud of you for not giving up on it.
Bulrush can be found in wet meadows, swamps, shallow pond edges and muddy areas.
Seeds of bulrushes are consumed by ducks and other birds; while geese, muskrats, and nutria consume the rhizomes and early shoots. Submerged portions of all aquatic plants provide habitats for many micro and macro invertebrates. These invertebrates in turn are used as food by fish and other wildlife species (e.g. amphibians, reptiles, ducks, etc.). After aquatic plants die, their decomposition by bacteria and fungi provides food (called “detritus”) for many aquatic invertebrates.
I've heard the word, "bullrushes" before. Maybe in the Bible where Moses was placed? If so, they are very old grasses.
Your place is looking good.
Robert you have so many irons in the fire, you are truly an inspiration 😊
i think the only thing you can do is dig a nice big pond and taper it off and spread the dirt around and make it nice and it will give the water somewhere to go
Just wanted to say I enjoyed this video. Took me back to why I started watching your channels. Felt like a classic but was brand new. I enjoy just watching the property get cleaned up. 😌 Your doing a great job keeping up with the property. Keep planting gardens also I like the idea of having separated gardens the way your planning like a vegetable garden and a fruit garden and a flower garden. Separated not to fight for the same nutrients and soil. Probably my first comment but have been watching for years now. 😆 your quiet fan boy... #Army_Veteran.
Well done it's looking good
Love watching u find old things buried on the farm. I am a farm girl, grandparents were also farmers. Oldest of six girls I drove a tractor i think it was an 8N similar to your d Ford tractor I believe it was a 1948 model. Brings back memories of being a farmers daughter with no brothers.
Progress!!
That roof is looking so nice. Its just down right spiffy!
Looking great Robert . You can see the house unlike it did when you first got the property
Really looking so much better this year than last Hard work is paying off
Everything you’ve said is similar to my grandparents feelings before they decided to build a pond in their swampy wetland on their farm. It’s still there and that was in 1950 in Northern Pennsylvania!
Great work Robert! You are getting the property into shape one step at a time. And all under a magical eclipse. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Love your videos and enjoy watching. May the lord bless and protect you Robert and working on the old Byrd farm
Hello Robert you have done wonders.
Never thought you could get the yard looking so good. Great job!
Great job. I miss cat. The eclipse was cool in Michigan. It got really cool and needed a jacket.
Removing that Holly tree was a great decision. The lil mighty Kubota tractor tackles every job you give it with ease.
I've watched your videos for several years. I do recall in some previous videos you talked about that really wet area towards the fence and showed how wet it was and now still is. I follow a channel, Gardening with Creekside, also on RUclips. Those folks own a commercial plant nursery. On their property, they have an area they described as wet and boggy that refused to dry up. They realized they had an underground spring. Their solution was to dig a pond. That allowed the surrounding soil to dry out. These folks live about 40 minutes west of Charlotte, NC.
Planting plants that like wet conditions could help to dry out the area some, perhaps willows or bald cypress trees and smaller plants that like it wet.
Those slender grass like plants you showed are a type of rush, I think. Rushes like it wet. Good luck figuring out what to do. By the way, great job on the wisteria and privet!
up north east where we are, we had 6 min. of being able to see the start of the eclipse!
about the first 1/8 . then heavy clouds blocked it out! the day before blue sky's then
tuesday was blue skies , but monday between the blue skies dark grey. I followed it
on my Ipad, you could see it go as dark as night ! then it started to lighten in the west!
back words then normal. hope you enjoyed the view!
Looks great👍
With the water it looks like an over grown old pond. On my parents farm we had a pond for the cattle and now cattle are 20yrs gone it looks like your wet area with underground spring. Could be artisan drinking water also underneath 💰🧊🍺
It's a bog. Maybe you could plant flowers and plants that grow in bogs. That would probably be unique in your area.
Farm is looking great. Glad you're feeling better and able to get at all the work again.
Between a lot man hours and tractor hours, the place is really looking good..the trees can breathe again…
Oh my. Look how much has been cleared. I remember how charmed we were when the fence was uncovered. Good work, Robert.
Get the NRCS folks come out to look at the boggy area with you. These isolated wetlands are super important for wildlife and can be really beautiful.
The lawn looks awesome. I love your new mic.
It’s so cool how you discover new things on the OBF.
That is a wetlands grass. I've seen it grow around irrigation water capture ponds, even here on the arid Tx prairielands, where 95% of the land has been farmed for around 70 yrs. I first saw it 50+ yrs ago when I'd ride my dad's old cowhorse across our shallow playa lakes. He loved splashing through a half mile of water and back. If he grew bored with me he'd make a clever manuever and off I'd go onto the ground. Riding bareback with a rope halter has it's drawbacks.
Twentyfive yrs of drought have eliminated water in our lakes, except after an occasional six inch gully warsher when they'll hold water for around a month. Birds "transplant" those wild grasses and odd plants for us to deal with - complete with starter fertilizer. ;)
Makes such a difference seeing it all mowed. It's pretty amazing when you see the old photo on Google Earth and you can barely see the house for the trees!
Just looks so good after mowing. It looks like a place to just go relax in. Great job Robert.
Yes definitely! I’m doing more work on that area right now! It’s so nice!
Lots of heartwarming changes, for sure! Please tell me the other 2 muskateers come by periodically to notice them!---I keep wondering if you took a journalism class because you write such eloquent essays.
Wow! You’ve really opened up the place! Also, I am so proud of your accomplishment for the farm and for the community, especially the black cemeteries! I include Dan and the other Robert, Cecil and I know I’m forgetting someone or many someone’s, especially another fella who is interested in cataloging old cemeteries,
Wow it is so pretty now great job.
They probably placed those foundation blocks there to give something sturdy in that marshy area. Who knows, maybe years ago they were looking for something to help get a stuck vehicle out of there.
Maybe I can help with the plant ID. Take the flower stalk and roll it between your fingers. If it is triangular it is a grass like plant called sedge. Carex genus. Now for a fact that you cannot forget. "Sedges have edges". Keep grinding on that old homestead. We're starting to see progress!!!
Wonderful mow
Great job Robert, hello Blue and Anne
We call that a bogg
Hey Robert, I would love to see you seed some things in the wetlands like cardinal flowers, Carolina spider lily’s and steeple bush. The are great in watery areas. So many to choose from.
If you have wet areas, those are perfect areas for say, a Corkscrew Willow Tree....which are fascinating. They need wet soil. You are doing a fabulous job, just livin' the dream!
Let the Sunshine in!😎
I just love your sense of humor😂.
Robert, I know it would be expensive, but have you thought of buying a riding mower or something with the cutting part in the front? Looks like you could mow much faster if you didn’t have to back up so much. But stay after it. The transformation is awesome.
One day! Just not in the budget right now.
QUESTION..have you thought about making the wet area into a pond or something, being the fact that the water never really goes away?😊
That's what I would do,is plant ornamental grasses all around the wet area? And that was funny when you smelled that flower, beautiful and tossed it!!!
I love watching blue chase you aaroubd
There was a day that the Old Byrd Farm farmhouse was not visible from the road. The Omaha metro area reached about 80% totality and at the height of the eclipse the silence was surprising.
Love all your videos on all your channels
It looks so good!!!
Please remember to keep all age of trees. Trees for now and trees for the future, a succession of trees for generations.
