Been trying to get inspiration for cool effects and learn a bit more technical detail about Resolve for a while, and this ticked most boxes all in one video! Awesome content dude. Your intentional awkwardness reminds me of Casey Faris. LOL
It was 100% worth it when I switched from Adobe. I can't even open Premiere anymore without throwing up in my mouth a little bit. If you have any questions about the switch, let me know!
@@CameraTim nice. I use shotcut and after effects and premiere Pro were too overwhelming for me for simple video editing and trying to learn animations. I'll definately hit you up if I get stuck
I did this step by step the 1st time. perfectly fine just wasnt trasnparent when i put it in obs. Went to do it a second time the exact same way and now nothing happens when i do the solid/invert/XOr step, just stays as a solid. is there something im forgetting to click?
Sorry for the late response. My guess without seeing the node graph is that you're putting the rectangle mask into Effect Mask instead of Foreground, but I would need to see it to be sure.
Alpha channels can be kind of tricky because if you don’t specify one on export, it won’t include it, and there’s only a limited number of codecs that can have one. There are a couple different ways to do it depending on if you’re using a Mac or PC, if you have the free or Studio version, and if you’re planning on using what you’re exporting in OBS or a different software. What’s your specific use-case?
A lot of high fidelity codecs like ProRes, DNxHR, and GoPro CineForm won't play in native Windows media players. Also, a lot of media players, including VLC, don't support alpha channels, so they won't display properly in a lot of them even if they could play. However, if you open the file in OBS, the file is supported and will display the alpha channel (transparency) if it exists. That's really the best way to test it. Then you can compress the file to WebM through something like FFmpeg or Format Factory for a much smaller file that is less taxing on your CPU in OBS, and still maintains an alpha channel.
Are you referring to when you rendered it out of Resolve? There are a couple things to note. If you open the file in VLC or Handbrake, the alpha channel will not be present, and not all online converters that use WebM support alpha channels. And second, which I'm guessing is the issue you're running into, when you upload the file to StreamElements, the file isn't transparent, but when you place the file directly into OBS, it is. This is because, to my knowledge, only Google Chrome and Firefox support alpha channels on WebM files. So if you're opening it in something like Safari or Edge, it won't work.
I can’t get the trapezoid thing to work… he says to click and hold to highlight the left side then hold control for the right side and then says delete and a line magically appears… I’m so confused. Nothing I do creates that line.
@@zachromero5637 Yeah, the learning curve can feel overwhelming because it's a different way to think about compositing, but it's definitely an incredibly powerful way of doing it once you get used to it. Let me know if you run into any other issues!
Anytime I do anything in fusion it causes my video to be very glitchy during playback. I really don't like it. Canva is so much more simple when creating animated stuff for your video overlays. Are you having the same problem as me?
@@TriggaTreDay So I wish this was a simpler answer, but long story short is I don’t have the same problems, but that’s only because the more I’ve used Fusion, the more I understand how it processes things. Canva is a nice tool and does a really good job for what it is, but I also have a problem with subscription-based software (don’t need to get into that). The basic pros and cons with Canva is it’s very simple and makes designing much easier, but at the cost of being significantly more limited than Fusion. Now with Fusion, Resolve by default sometimes likes to default to using software rendering, which means it’s primarily utilizing your CPU instead of your GPU (if you have an NVIDIA GPU or you’re on a Mac, I strongly suggest changing your Resolve Preferences to use CUDA or Metal in the Memory and GPU tab). That in and of itself would be taxing on playback, but the other part is how Fusion calculates your images. Fusion operates in a “linear” fashion, which is standard for VFX, but that means there’s more calculation going on to ensure accuracy. That by itself doesn’t cause any lag really, but when you start adding effects like blurs/glows, noise, particles, etc., stuff that relies on doing very heavy math, then the processing time adds up and can potentially be exponential. All-in-all, if you’re just doing a solid color that has a mask around it, that’s very easy for Fusion to do, but Fusion is also meant for heavy VFX workflows, so it needs to be capable to handling very heavy tasks that aren’t possible in Canva. There are a couple things you can do though. I would definitely look into the Saver and Loader nodes because that’s basically like pre-rendering your comp, and that can definitely take a huge load of the processing without having to use the Render In Place option on the Edit page and having to go back and redo things over and over again.
@ 😅 yeah you are for sure light years ahead of me in under this stuff. I’m getting better at using it, but for some semi complex designs that are possible in canva, but would take a lifetime to create in DR, I just do it there for now while I am building up my skills on DR. I totally understand where you are coming from with not liking paying for subscription services. It sucks. But I will take your advice and study up on it to see if I can make those changes without breaking something 😂. Thanks for the thorough reply.
@ No problem! And yeah, Fusion isn’t the most intuitive for creating simple designs, but its advantage is the flexibility you have if you understand it. The video I have on thumbnails in Fusion is a good example of that.
Too good.
Thank you!
this was extremely helpful
Thank you!
FINALLY A GRID!!! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!

Semi-new to Resolve, but I've tried everything to export this with a transparent background and it's still black. Help appreciated!

How should i export it to keep the transparency, i tried gopro cineform rgb 16 bit but it says i cant play the file on windows

I did this... but when I uploaded the basic animation overlay I have a huge black background behind it... what did I do wrong?

For the copied mask, are you seeing the same trapezoid shape on the mask points, just not on the background itself?
@@CameraTimthank you for replying!
I just had to mess with the left side and zoom out. I’m new to all this and the learning curve for me is insane lol
Now just trying to figure out the pin system to resize them together. I liked and subbed tho!
