Not as tough as I thought it would be. That mega armor secret really helps out a ton. I think my perception of how difficult this map is on pacifist tends to bleed into my thoughts on nightmare for some reason. Awesome job!
Tried Nightmare myself and tried maybe for like a half hour to do this level, but the red key trap and those tiny hallways down the hole are impossible at my skill level. Watching you beat it so easily is weirdly cathartic.
Underhalls, always a classic. And until not long ago, considered near impossible to do a true pacifist because of its rampant amount of hitscan and narrow corridors and halls
Two notable bits of trivia for this level - one of them is a particular shotgunner stuck in a wall in the second half of the level. He wasn't originally stuck, actually, this only happened in version 1.8 when changes to this map caused most of the enemies to get stuck in walls. They were all fixed in the next patch... except that shotgunner. So there he remains, stuck to this present day. It is a bit of a sad story. As for the other - the older Doom veterans among you may remember that the first switch you have to press was originally behind a door of silvery metal bars that you had to open. This was supposedly confusing to some players, so it was removed.
yeah, it's strange, at this point I've played far more of Doom versions without the bars than with them, I think I only played the original version a couple of times in the mid 90s, but somehow those bars are still ingrained in my head
Ahead of your playthrough, I was going to try to do DOOM2 on nightmare. As, I’m much more familiar with DOOM2 than DOOM(1) but I could not get past this, the second map. I think I’ll stick to ultra-violence, thank you. Good stuff though, pumpkin man, always appreciate the work you put into your uploads.
This is honestly the most memorable map for me in doom 2 for some reason. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the playthrough, hope you don't get too frustrated on some of the later maps lol
Hitscanners are annoying here, but at least the Shotgun here is good. I like the part about the intro of Super Shotgun changes the entire Doom Series! Good job on beating this on Nightmare Mode. Cannot wait for the next one! 😄👍
The trick to this level is managing the Shotgunner population and keeping a good pace so they won't respawn and fill up any areas you have to go back through.
I feel like Doom 2 starts easy and introduces itself slowly. You get map 1 which is just Doom 1 monsters. You get the SSG but no new monsters in this map. And then slowly the new cast is added. High DPS hit scanners, revs and hell knights for mid sized foes needing the SSG, Pain elementals. Archie is used too sparingly in Doom 2 so hard to talk about.
I wish you the best of luck with this mission. I ended up pistol-starting most of the game last year when I did a run through on Ultra-Violence (no saving in levels, pistol start if I die) and I struggled so much. The fact that you've made it this far is insane. You are my hero.
As an experiment, it'd be cool to see how many kills you could get on Nightmare before you end up just dying. You have infinite shells from all the shotgunners. I'd wager 200 kills is about maximum.
@@jonathanford9354 Fair, probably going to end up being a lot more situational that the mainstay it usually is, with the reaction time change nightmare mode introduces.

Says decino who got shot by a zombieman in the first area but didn't lose any health. And then it happened a dozen more times, they are shooting, but dealing no damage. I tried, didn't work for me.
Some really rare RNG here! Taking 4 bullets to kill the last of the three intro zombiemen (the average is 2), and then killing the shotgunner with only 2 bullets, while they tend to take 3 on average :D
Didn't know you can grab the key without triggering the Pinky and Imp closet. I guess you learn something everyday. Thanks for the videos Decino. You make my lunch break from work nice and relaxing.

Just the video I needed to cheer me up: I tested positive for Covid fortunately I have no symptoms and I’m fully vaccinated. I should recover fast. Thanks again.
What I love most about the Super Shotgun is that, for 2 shells, it fires 20 pellets as opposed to the regular shotgun’s 7 pellets for 1 shell. It’s almost like firing three shells for the price of two!❤
I still wonder why they "removed" those bars on the left of that one room at the start. The player has to poke the Red Keycard bars to open them, too, so having those non-keycard bars there serves as kind of a tutorial / reminder that the player might have to open bars as well as doors.
I've never realized that you can avoid some of the monster closets like that. I've always thought that ie. that blue key is item bound trigger to release those two closets there. In fact are there even item based triggers in Doom? So-to-say location based triggers are very obvious playing the game, but are all triggers actually location based? Apart switches obviously. I've never made maps in Doom so haven't even thought about this more thoroughly.
this one being short is what makes it more tolerable. you made it look easy but I still have my hard time on it every time I decide to try nightmare. guess I just suck at killing shotgunners fast enough :T anyway doom II only gets harder from now on, and I think the first major brick wall for you will be map 8
The dirty truth is Decino finished all these Doom games on nightmare years ago and he's just uploading them one at a time to make us think it's a work in progress... He never mentions Doom 2016 or Eternal because those games did exist when he recorded this!
It seems like the Super Shotty is less useful here, just because of the speed difference and lack of cover once you're in the halls. I didn't know it was possible to not open those closets with the pinkies, though. That's nice.
