Excellent review and very helpful. If I have the option (I live in SE Asia), I will definitely go for the PM401, whereas before the review, I was strongly leaning toward the A04. Thanks for your help. Subscribed and liked.
Thanks for the review. I checked another review as well and while I definitely prefer the PM401 (based on your observations), but I noticed a few differences. 1) Another reviewer did an unboxing of the MAONO AU-A04 microphone and his did NOT have a small microphone tripod (the silver one). Either it was a temporary inclusion when you originally bought it or it was exclusive to your microphone. He also said the stand is very flimsy and despite the shock mount, there is some background noise if you bump into it. 2) The Price is way different now (especially in Canada). Full price for AU-A04 is $89.99 (CAD) and Full price for AU-PM401 is $109.99 (CAD). Amazon Sale price brought them down to $60.39 and $76.49 respectively (in CAD). $16 is more of difference than $5 making the AU-A04 the better priced option....but honestly, I'd rather go with the better mic PM401 or get a cheap entry mic like the Blue-Yeti mics (they've risen in price by $30 in the last 6 months and haven't gone back down, which is why I haven't bought a microphone yet). So that's where I'm at. Thanks for the advice.
I think the AU-PM401 sounds a bit more realistic/clear, and the AU-A04 sounds like it has a little bit more bass. I'd prefer the AU-A04 over the AU-PM401 :D

Hi Carl, so the A04 is a USB mic, so you wouldn't need an interface (unless you just wanted one for monitoring the audio). But if you already have an interface and if it has phantom power, I would just recommend getting a regular XLR condenser mic. Feel free to let me know if you have more questions, I'll try to explain as best I can

Hi, I have never personally tried the maono au pm422, but I have watched other peoples reviews on it and I think it sounds pretty good. The one thing that the pm422 has that these other 2 mics don't have is the volume knob on the mic. If the volume knob is something that you need, then you will want to go with the maono au pm422

Hey Tobias I bought pm-401 but when I connect that to my lap top and I record my voice , my voice is distorte and also when I open fl studio every sounds r distorted is that the mics problem? Thank you
Sorry to hear that! Hopefully I can help get it figured out. If other sounds in fl studio are sounding distorted, it shouldn't have anything to do with the mic. Are midi notes even sounding distorted?
does this version of Maono AU-A04 using the ALC4042 chip ? becuase in the video of TDCatTech RUclips Channel, Maono says that post mid of 2020 this mic model has been replaced by different chipset which have different performance ( bad in performance ) because of shortage of the ALC4042 chip
Yeah I just recently found out about this as well. my A04 has the ALC4042 chip. I recently made a video where I compare the A04 to the Blue Snowball and I opened up my A04 to check what chip I had ruclips.net/video/WL-ZVxLEs4Y/видео.html
hi there! i just wanted to ask, i have a PM401 right now and i was thinking of buying the tripod for A04 for it because my current setup doesnt fit the boomarm. do you think it will fit?
So from what I understand, I don't think phantom power will affect the amount of gain you can get with a mic. It's pretty much just an electricity source that is needed to power an XLR condenser mic. However, if you are using an audio interface that supplies phantom power (like the Focusrite Scarlett interfaces) you can increase your input gain substantially more
Hi Im a app streamer and I usually stream on Facebook and Kumu app. May I know if I will need a soundcard/audio mixer if I have a Maono Au AO4 USB? I sing in my Livestream so I will need some Echo THANKKKK UU
im trying to record vocals(musical opera) with MAONO AU-A04 and it saturates when i hit the high loud parts always or even normal notes when i need to put in a little oomph, if you could personally help me i would really appreaciate it, ive tried to record myself for years and its always the same problem, i just bought this mic and its been really depressing not being able to record myself for years :,c
Hi there! It sounds to me like you may be better off recording with a dynamic mic, which won't be quite as sensitive as a condenser. Although, if you still want to try to make the A04 work, maybe practice moving away from the mic for loud parts and try positioning your mouth at least 8 inches away from the mic at all times and don't point the capsule directly at your mouth. Hope that helps!
Yes 🙂I have only tested it with an iPhone, but as long as you have the OTG adapter for android, it should work ruclips.net/video/IgCcB1QgpYU/видео.html

Hi, I actually don't think it will work with the V8 sound card, because it looks like the V8 sound card only has a 3.5mm mic input and a 1/4" mic input. I think you would need a regular XLR mic and not a USB mic
Hi, Nice comparison between 2 Mic. I guess both share same Realtek chip inside. USB cable with AU04 is not great. I changed to to thicker 24awg one and 04 sounded balanced and better. Au-04 also has Headphone out pins on pcb inside, but company not preferring to take it out. Yes DIY way one can take headphone out of AU04. Thanks.
🥺 I'm kind of torn and uncertain what should I go for. I am thinking about getting maono AU-PM641TR or AU-A03 Can you help me out by telling me which one is better based on your experience
Hi Kent you mean the maono AU-PM461TR right? Sometimes they have mics with very similar numbers, so I just want to make sure. I haven't tried out the AU-A03, but I just watched a review on it and I felt like it kind of had a loud hiss. In my opinion I think the Maono AU-PM461TR sounds better. I have a review of it if you want to check it out ruclips.net/video/1Xuurjpq2P8/видео.html
@@TobiasHolenstein oh yes, sorry what I mean is 461TR haha got confused as well by trying to choose one. I have updated my options and they're AU-PM461TR AU-PM421 AU-PM401 AU-PM903 or 902 Fifine K99B
@@TobiasHolenstein the headphone jack isnt a big deal for me, but the mute button would be nice, but the thing is that I couldnt find the other model on amazon, and on all the local sites they are all more expensive, but I will just be gaming so it wont matter too much, and I can probably macro a button on my keyboard to mute the mic... I hope. But anyways your content is really high quality and I hope you a lot of success on youtube!
Hi Tobias! I was wondering... in your professional opinion... if you thought both of these microphones could be used for a 2 person podcast? Or would it sound too weird with the difference in models? Thanks!
I don't think it would sound weird, but the only problem is that I don't think you would be able to use both mics to record at the same time, because in audio recording softwares (as far as I know) you can only select one input device (one usb microphone) at a time. That's kind of the drawback with usb mics. When people are using more than one microphone at a time they are usually using a multi channel audio interface where they can plug in several XLR microphones and the recording software will recognize the audio interface as the audio device
In my opinion the A04 and PM461 are pretty similar. The A04 has a bit better build quality, since the mic is metal and the PM461 is plastic, but the biggest difference in my opinion is that the PM461 has a built in gain knob on the mic, which is pretty convenient. Aside from that the A04 comes with the boom arm stand, which is pretty cool. In my opinion you should be good with either one, it just depends which features you like more
I have a review of them here ruclips.net/video/wWCCn3yve_0/видео.html They were pretty good at first, but then after about 5 months I would sometimes get some distortion from them and the audio would sometimes drop out from the right ear. I think it had to do with the headphone jack on the headphones or the cable that it comes with. Long story short, I don't really use them anymore and I instead use my AKG K44's that I've owned for years and are around the same price
@@azeezabdallaofficial5983 Oh ok I see, there is no headphone jack on the A04, you would need to plug your headphones into your computer and then use software monitoring to hear your voice
Awesome! A fellow Tobias!! 😄Yeah I think you can use the mic for gaming. I personally don't play any games, but I imagine it would work fine. You will probably have to adjust it so that it doesn't pick up the keyboard. Like maybe turn the sensitivity (the input volume) of the mic down and get your mouth closer to the mic

im trying to record vocals(musical opera) with MAONO AU-A04 and it saturates when i hit the high loud parts always or even normal notes when i need to put in a little oomph, if you could personally help me i would really appreaciate it, ive tried to record myself for years and its always the same problem, i just bought this mic and its been really depressing not being able to record myself for years :,c
Fifine k669 Vs maono au pm402 who is better 🤔
Muchas gracias por el video!
De nada! 🙂
Would you be able to hear yourself on a wireless headset while using this mic?
Singing use AU-PM401 vs AU-A04
Ethu best?
Can i conect this mic on my android Phone and make some song vocals and rap?
Yes 🙂I have only tested it with an iPhone, but as long as you have the OTG adapter for android, it should work ruclips.net/video/IgCcB1QgpYU/видео.html
I tried AU04 connecting to Redmi note4 android phone, but it didn't work. Maono Au902 did work but audio was occasionally choppy.
@@spirovious1 Hi, just out of curiosity what apps were you using to record? I had someone else tell me that with their android phone the mic would only work if they were recording video
@@TobiasHolenstein Lexis audio editor for android phone. I could connect AU902, but audio was choppy. I could record with Samson S21 mic with USB sound card connected to same phone. But AU04 is not detected. With PC and Laptop, no issue.
@@spirovious1 Ok thanks for letting me know. By any chance did you try recording video with the AU04 on your android phone? I'm just curious if the phone doesn't recognize the mic or if it is is the app
Haii how can I use my maono mic to record my audio if I'm recording video in my room
Hi Olivia, for recording videos, what I usually do is I record the video on my camera and I record the audio separately on my computer and then I sync the audio up with the video in editing
Can you connect the AU-PM401 to a cannon camera ?
Nah mate, you can't
Au PM401 has a more dynamic and realistic sound quality moreover its more clean best for recording vocals!
AU-A04 is so much better
ikr?????
Plz give a substitute options for maono AU PM401 for android smartphone. This model is nof available in India.
Hi, in India are you able to get other Maono microphones? If you can, I think the PM421 is also a good microphone by Maono
But maono pm421 doesn't come with headphone jack?
@@TobiasHolenstein what about Rode NT USB MINI it is easily available in India. I have seen many videos on youtube that it can easily support android smartphone.... what do you think? Plz help..
@@versatilemusic6282 Oh yeah sorry about that, the PM421 does not have a headphone jack, the PM422 is the one with the headphone jack. The Rode NT USB Mini would probably also be fine. I have never tried it out myself, but Rode makes pretty good mics
@@TobiasHolenstein for singing covers which is better rode NT USB MINI or maono pm422?
Can u tell be which microphone is best for singing recording if i have sweet voice texture ? I recommend maono microphone can u tell be best microphone of this manufacturer?
Not much expensive too
Hi, I've always been a big fan of the Maono au-pm401, I think that is one of my favorites and one of their best sounding mics that I have tried
@@TobiasHolenstein thank you so much ❤️
@@KHUSHISHAKYA No problem!
mic sucks don’t but I had it for a month treated it super good. The problem is the plug doesn’t even work and my pc doesn’t even connect to it
The mic never worked for you? You may have gotten a defective unit. I would recommend returning it.

Pool pond December update pls
I'll do a December update soon 🙂
if you commented that you can tell a difference, you are smoking something, I am an audio engineer with more than 20years on this, and they are the same, stop kidding yourself
What config did you use in OBS?
bro is pm40 good for vocals?
Yeah I think it's pretty decent for vocals
Hi, I have the same nicrophone, does it work with v8 sound card?
Hi, I actually don't think it will work with the V8 sound card, because it looks like the V8 sound card only has a 3.5mm mic input and a 1/4" mic input. I think you would need a regular XLR mic and not a USB mic
Thank you so much for answering.. appreciate it! 😍
Theres a slight clarity pm401 but its minute.. pm401 is basically better due to the mute button other than that they are the same.
Thanks.
Thank you! I did not know that about the headphones with the A04. Thanks for letting me know!
@@TobiasHolenstein Here is the image link of AU04 PCB ,ibb.co/6Pd0BhJ . Model before June 2020 has that onboard pin layout.
will 24 awg improve both models? or does the pm401 already come with 24awg?
Maono au04?or
Maono au04t?
What's the difference?
I think they are the same except the au04t comes with a different kind of mic stand
🥺 I'm kind of torn and uncertain what should I go for.
I am thinking about getting maono AU-PM641TR or AU-A03
Can you help me out by telling me which one is better based on your experience
Hi Kent you mean the maono AU-PM461TR right? Sometimes they have mics with very similar numbers, so I just want to make sure. I haven't tried out the AU-A03, but I just watched a review on it and I felt like it kind of had a loud hiss. In my opinion I think the Maono AU-PM461TR sounds better. I have a review of it if you want to check it out ruclips.net/video/1Xuurjpq2P8/видео.html
@@TobiasHolenstein oh yes, sorry what I mean is 461TR haha got confused as well by trying to choose one.
I have updated my options and they're
AU-PM461TR
AU-PM421
AU-PM401
AU-PM903 or 902
Fifine K99B
@@TobiasHolenstein AU-PM461TR is the cheapest I could get out of the list but I am thinking whether can it compete with the following
Thank god i switch at the last moment when i bought it thanks 👌
No problem! Enjoy your new mic 🙂
@@TobiasHolenstein i will when i comes 😊
Just clicked on the video and saw the comment, I bought the AU-A04 today and am now worried which one you're happy you didnt get 😂
@@arthurkal5892 The A04 is still a good mic, if you don't mind not having the mute button or headphone jack on the mic you should be fine 🙂
Awesome video!!! Thanks 🙏🏼
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
what is the difference between A04 and PM461 that was previously tested? I want to use it mainly for conference calls via laptop.
In my opinion you should be good with either one, it just depends which features you like more
How about the headphones 🎧
I have a review of them here ruclips.net/video/wWCCn3yve_0/видео.html They were pretty good at first, but then after about 5 months I would sometimes get some distortion from them and the audio would sometimes drop out from the right ear. I think it had to do with the headphone jack on the headphones or the cable that it comes with. Long story short, I don't really use them anymore and I instead use my AKG K44's that I've owned for years and are around the same price
@@TobiasHolenstein sorry my question is on MAONA AU A 04 where do you plug the headphones 🎧 to monitor your voice
@@azeezabdallaofficial5983 Oh ok I see, there is no headphone jack on the A04, you would need to plug your headphones into your computer and then use software monitoring to hear your voice
@@TobiasHolenstein Thank you 😊
Hi, Have you tried to connect the pm401 to iphone?
Hi, sorry for my late reply, but yes I tried it and it worked 🙂 I have this video where I do a demonstration ruclips.net/video/IgCcB1QgpYU/видео.html
I bought the (AU-A04) and I don't like that I can't mute easy without a third party device I'm returning it
Hi! Can the pm-401 be used for gaming? Like will it pick up the keyboard’s and mouse’s sounds? And nice name btw:)
