- the dead playing an very early version of lazy river road. LYRICS: Way down upon Sycamore Slough
White man sings the blues
Selling roses of paper mache
And flecks of starlight dew
I swiped a bunch and threw them your way
Down where hazy moonlight glows
Way down, down along Lazy River Road
Way down upon Shadowfall Ward
End of the avenue
Run, hide, seek in your own backyard
Mama's backyard won't do
All night long I sing love's sweet songs
Down where the water flows
Way down, down along lazy river road
Moonlight wanes where hound dogs bay
Never quite catch the tune
Stars fall down in buckets like rain
Till there ain't no standin' room
Bright blue boxcars train by train
Clatter while dreams unfold
Way down, down along lazy river road
Way down upon Seminole Square
Belly of the river tide
Call for me and I will be there
For the price of a taxi ride
Nighttime double clutches into the day
Like a truck downshifting it's load
Way down, down along lazy river road
Moonlight wanes where hound dogs bay
Never quite catch the tune
Stars fall down in buckets like rain
Till there ain't no standin' room
Bright blue boxcars train by train
Clatter while dreams unfold
Way down, down along lazy river road
Thread the needle right through the eye
The thread that runs so true
All the others I let pass by I only wanted you
Never cared much for careless love
Oh how your bright eyes glow
Way down, down along lazy river road
One of Jerry's finest tunes from that time!!! There's something so hauntingly beautiful about the melody of this tune! Miss him a whole lot! PEACE!
Never appreciate this tune in the 90's, now I love it......
"All the others I let pass by, I only wanted you
Never cared much for careless love, oh how your bright eyes glowed"
Jer, you are tearing my heart out...
love this song. Great vibe. good feelings wish i was there
I really miss Jerry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These songsmake my sould cry out!
Best band ever, sure never had Beatle or Stones hits but touched more people personally or LIVE. Dead had a brief interuption in touring between a few albums, my 2 favorites BLUES AND MARS but they really played straight from the Mid 60's till 1995 the only stops were purly medical(besides 70's 1 year hiatus) They toured to the point of exaustion, for the fans, they really loved the fans. Great Band, The Best!!
These late period/end of the road Jerry/Hunter songs were as good as any they ever wrote. Wonderful.
Unlike the other late period ballads from Jerry, this one gives me a sense of hope and change instead of that feeling of Jerry saying good-bye. A love song for the ages.
This was my first show when I was 16 years old. Been on the Bus ever since!!
thanks for posting! Jerry's voice is soothing to the soul. I can just close my eyes, listen and its close (but never close enough) to being at a show.
Thank you Jerry
awesome 90's dead tune.....miss those carefree days!!!!
Also love the late era Standing on the Moon and Black Muddy River. Something going on with rivers and roads. I like it.
Very nicely done. I didn't really understand the Dead until it was too late, so videos like this are the best I can do. One of my favorite late-era songs, so beautiful...
Thqanks for posting, I appreciate it. I've never heard about this tune, but than I found it here. What a beautiful lyrics, especially the last part. God how I miss Jerry and the boys...
My kid was at this blizzard show, too. He was about 18 at the time and his 5 hour return trip home took 3 days. Musta been some show.
wow.
all the others i let pass by. i only wanted you. i never cared much for careless love. oh how your bright eyes glow...
we had a great run. saw the dead first in @1969. saw the m for the last time in Vegas 1995.
what a run it was. ain't been anything like it since and wont ever be again. yeah we all miss
the freedom and love of those days.
they plyed this is the second to last show in chicago this tempo is slower and its really nice the lyrics can all be understood..... so beautiful ty jerry even when you are gone i still walk with a lil jerry in my stride daily.....try it , it makes life less stressful
Bob Weir co-wrote "Haze" with Essra Mohawk. In addition to the landmark Primordial Lovers, she is known for her vocals on the School House Rock videos & for writing Cyndi Lauper's "Change of Heart."
Thank u so much for creating this little time machine.
Nice to feel as if they're still with us, even if it's only for 7:19.
Hope you're somewhere happy, Jerry.
Snfl...
