    I’m liking the info and opinions in this video. My first plant (about 5 years ago) was an aglaonema. When repotting it I discovered that each stalk was in a plastic container. I never knew they were there and didn’t know why they were there but I suspected some sort of money-saving shortcut by the grower. It took quite a while to gradually pry the containers away from the roots. The plant has been very happy after repotting. I’m sure that if it were human it would yell “yippee” and maybe tell a dad joke or two for some laughs. Thanks.

      So glad it's doing better after the repotting. haha I'm sure it was very thankful for that :)

    Yes! This is my whole problem with the “death plug”. It keeps those roots wet, even if all the soil around it has dried out and it’s difficult to tell if it’s dried out properly for watering.

    I just checked one of my raven zz's but no death plugs! But for sure when I find the chameleon they are coming off! I have had agleonema near deaths and some death from the plastic and the mesh ones....so exciting! For its new potting mix

    The first chameleon zz I received was in August. It is doing fine. The second one I received 3 weeks ago and it was completely rotten when I went to replant it.

    Your so lucky to have found one in store. I've been debating whether or not to buy one online. They have been available on the website for a while. I just don't want to pay $30 more. I love zz. I think they're beautiful. Our plain green zz is my husband's favorite out of all my plants. Its such a low maintenance, easy going plant.

      Ok I lied. I am willing to buy one online. I bought one off Walmart. I decided I wanted to buy one in good shape and not drowning which appears to be a problem for a lot of people. Also it's coming in a nicer planter with a plant stand. So worth the extra money.

    That explains what happened to my plants that I just got! I have never run into them before but I cut them off (there where 10 of them)and because of that I had to remove most of the soil. I expected a little shock but not the amount that I ended up with. I am currently trying to save the plant. Grrr....lol

    Agree. Those net plugs suck. Unfortunately, the plastic net pots are worse. Well, though I still see the death plugs, I haven't come across the plastic net pots in a while.

    Great video with lots of good information! I have not found the Chameleon ZZ plant yet, but I appreciate the heads up from your experience. You’ve probably saved the plant I plan to purchase once I find it! Many thanks. I bought a Monstera Peru recently and she appears to be in a heavy peat mix. I think it would be best for the plant to re-pot her into a better mix and to see if she has the plugs. It can’t hurt to be sure she’s okay! 👌🪴🥰

    • @plantsbymelissa

      I prefer a lot of airflow in my mix for sure! I always check now, even just peeking into the soil some without repotting and if I see one it's getting repotted!

    I'm catching up and just watched this yesterday 😁 I got a chameleon zz a few weeks ago, Costa Farms, I think from Walmart - so I repotted it this morning and there weren't any mesh plugs in there! It'll probably be happy just getting out of that soil though 😊 Is there a way to tell if the plant you buy has those plug traps before digging in there?
    Thanks! Enjoying your content!

    • @plantsbymelissa

      Thank you! Happy yours came okay! I can dig at the top of the plant where it meets the soil and you can sorta see them most of the time without having to repot or dig it up!

    I greatly dislike the "death plugs" and peat moss! In my area many bedding plants and hanging baskets have the death plugs. I always remove them...death plugs eventually choke plants to death!

      I had filmed at one location not too long ago and there was a sign up that said don't water these lol - I think it had to be a plant person!

  • @jackiewhitney5031
    @jackiewhitney5031 2 года назад

    I don't have the best of luck in these big box stores. The prices and quality is lower for people to buy but it seems as though they all expire within a few years from purchase date. Death plugs aren't called death plugs for nothing. Most people aren't as kind and good to their plants like you Melissa so they wonder why their plant is dying. I think they plant most of their plants now in peat moss so repotting is in order after purchase if you care about your plants and give them a healthy nurturing life. Everything is made nowadays for a quick sale.......very sad :((

    I found this "mesh" in my Monstera Deliciosa, and I was just pulling out pieces of it. I didn't know it was in there, another thing I found in my Monstera, was "Micah" and I read that you can use "Micah" as part of a fertilizer but I did find Micah in my Mysterio so it's all the way in there, you have to get up close in the roots to see it. Michael looks like little small pieces of aluminum foil that's what it'll remind you of when you see it Michael is also reflective because people use it for Landscaping because you can use it to light up a driveway or light up a walkway.

    Yeah, I hate those, too. Especially with orchids, which have highly sensitive roots, and these plugs are a special kind of pain in the ass to remove in these cases. Also with alocasias… while removing plugs, it’s super easy to destroy the roots and send your plant into a long state of recovery.
    Why do plant companies keep doing this…

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  2 года назад

      Ahh yes, one of my alocasias got a little angry at me for removing it 😅 i bet that would be annoying to remove for an orchid! Ugh, I wished they could do better!
