Saving My Plant from a Death Plug | Rhaphidophora Hayi

  • Hey guys! In this video, I tell you what a "death plug" is and show you how I remove it from my Rhaphidophora Hayi. Death plugs are commonly used in wholesale nurseries to start seedlings in. They are made up of a mesh material that holds the soil medium, making them easy to transport and transplant. However, as roots begin to expand, death plugs can sometimes restrict a plant's freedom to grow. In the right environment, plugs can actually be beneficial to a plant's growth. In our homes, however, not so much. These plugs tend to hold on to too much moisture in our indoor pots, usually leading to root rot! Have you removed any death plugs from your plants? Did your plants reward you with healthier growth?

    You saved my plant! I never knew about death plugs, I just repotted mine and the poor roots were so bound. 😯

    So late.. but I'm glad I found this video as well as the update. Got the same plant on clearance because it had mildewed. I just removed the plugs, sprayed it down with neem, and changed the soil. The roots were non-existent 😫. 🙏 Fingers crossed mine does as well as yours!

    Wow!! Thank you for this video!! I also bought the exact plant and one of my vines already died. I decided to repot it so I could train it up a wall and I noticed the membrane. I left it alone bc I really didn’t know what it was. I stumbled on this video and it’s been so helpful!! Thank you!!

    Just found your video and it’s exactly what I was looking for! As well as the switching of the plank video. THANK YOU!! One thing I’m definitely curious about is how you water this plant? Bottom watering or top?
    Also if I live in a rather dry place - should I spritz the leaves with water every day?

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  Год назад

      I have been top watering but you can certainly bottom water. If you keep up with spritzing every day, hopefully the aerial roots will stick to the plank. I have NOT been spritzing and my roots are not sticking 🙃 but the plant is still growing fine-I just use Velcro to hold the vines in place.

    Amazing! I bought the same exact plant (even came in that same white decorative pot.) and I noticed the top leaves are not looking good , they’re kind of dry and dead looking. I am going to do exactly what you’ve done. Maybe you can help me with two questions/ 1/ can I snip the top of the stem off where it looks crumby? 2/ it desperately needs a longer piece of wood - how do I get this off the original wood without killing it ( there’s plants on both sides) and can I use any plank of wood or is of necessary to use cedar? Thank you!!

    • @SuchPlants

      It seems everyone is getting these Costa Farms plants! Yes, you can definitely snip the top off and if the nodes look healthy enough, you can propagate them. To get it off the wood, just gently pull the plant off; it’s easier than it sounds lol. Personally, I would use wood that doesn’t have any stain/varnish because of the chemicals, but you see plants growing outside on everything lol so it really is up to you!

    Yeah, I've bought aglaonemas and they love to use plastic baskets, any Costa farms plants I get I like to report them asap. The soil they use, the death plugs, and sometimes the plastic pots. All of them I find something wrong.

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  Год назад

      You’re absolutely right. I tend to let them be in their original pots while they acclimate to my environment, until I start to see some slowdown in growth. Then I will inspect the soil and almost always will find the death plug, or chunks of compacted peat moss, or a plastic pot within a plastic pot! 😳

    I repotted my monstera and I realized it had this around the roots.. I removed it and repotted in same soil and pot (I just wanted to stake it and reposition the stems.. Anyway, my plant is now droopy and seems like it's stressed out.. 😢 Will it bounce back?
    (I didn't rewater yet because the soil was still moist)

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  4 месяца назад +1

      That’s typically what happens when you remove the death plugs. Actually, one benefit of the “death plugs” is that it encourages the roots to grow tightly, so the plant is anchored down quickly as it grows. But it’s not good in the long run, hence the name “death plug”. When you remove it, the roots are now loose. However, in time the plant should re-anchor itself as it grows new roots. The droopiness you’re talking about is probably from the loose roots. Just make sure you stake it well, and continue to give bright light. You did the right thing by not watering right away. For the next watering, top it off with some fresh soil and then water, so that the water carries the soil into the air gaps. That will help to anchor the loose roots!

    How is it doing now? I took a death plug off my moonlight philodendron that was not thriving today. I'm really hoping it makes all the difference!

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  2 года назад +2

      It’s been thriving almost immediately after! But it slowed down in growth a lot when it got colder. I’ve pruned it back so I’m hoping it bounces back in the spring!

    I also just bought the same exact plant in the same exact pot lol. Just repotted tonight and think I will wait until it gets some new growth before I change the plank. Forgive me if you've answered this or said this in one of your videos as I am brand new to your channel, but do you spray down the plank with water often? And what is your temperature and humidity in your growing area? Thanks for the video it really helped!

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  2 года назад

      Welcome to the channel! ☺️ I don’t spray down the plank that often. The plant room gets at least 40-50% humidity all day. When the weather was warmer around 78°F+, it was thriving and pushing out new growth weekly. Now temps are low 70s and I think it went dormant. I might need to check the roots but I’m sure it’ll bounce back when spring time gets closer. It pushed out leggy vines and tiny leaves during the winter season, which I chopped off. We will see!

    Are the jiffy pellets the same as the death plug?

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  Год назад +1

      Yes, that is essentially what death plugs are. Great for seedlings and starter plants, but eventually the peat/coir dries out and becomes almost rock hard and prevents proper water intake, and the mesh material restricts root growth.

      @@SuchPlants good to know! Thank you. I am growing 50 Monstera albos from seed with them. I’ll be sure to cut off the covering and then remove the coir when I pot them when their old enough. I plan to gift them to friends and family.

      That’s amazing! That’ll save your friends and family a bit of frustration when they ever need to repot. 😁 Just wondering… Have you successfully grown albos from seed before? I have heard about scammers selling fake albo seeds, as it is apparently not a common method to grow albos (not 100% sure about the science). But keep me updated! 😊

    • @Woollum90
      @Woollum90 Год назад

      @@SuchPlants right! Haha and yes I was able to germinate 3 out of 5 seeds(not all seeds make it ofc) that I got from a seller and they are about 1 year old, I gave 2 away to fellow plant parents when they were 6 months old last summer and wanted to try again this year. It’s definitely not a common way and I have no doubt there are scammers due to rarity, popularity, and price of Albos. I genuinely just looked around for sellers everywhere on the internet and ended up with a person on Etsy. I purchased 20 seeds and he said this was his last batch for awhile as he doesn’t make a business of selling seeds only when they are producing.
