  • Hello! Today I finally decided to upgrade the plank on my Rhaphidophora Hayi. In this video, you will see 1 month of root growth since saving the plant from a death plug (SPOILER ALERT: it's a lot)! It also grew so many leaves, too! Enjoy!

    When your roots get stuck you can mist them down and wait a few minutes. It will help you remove them without as much damage. They usually recover quickly either way though.

    Oh, and for everyone asking about ways to stain/tint the wood: I like to use a simple diy stain that speed-oxidizes the wood. Just toss some rusty nails, steel wool pads, etc into a jar of vinegar and let it sit overnight (you can use it earlier if you want a more subtle effect). Next day you grab a sponge and a rag and go to town. It doesn’t smell great, but it’s not toxic to breath the way spray paints, stains, and varnishes can be. And it brings out the natural tones in the wood itself.
    Orrrr, you can grab some acrylic paint, water it down a bit, apply like a stain and you can have any color of wood you want. Sometimes I like to do a black wash of acrylic and then oxidize for wood that has a lot of grain patterns. Or char the plank with a torch and then top with a fun color stain (orange or a cool red/pink looks great with the dark green leaves). It’s fun to play around with, cheap, quick, and you don’t need a respirator.

    Just a tip....the growers don't recommend removing the vines from the plank, since they won't re-attach once removed. They do recommend cutting the overgrown vines and rooting them in a new pot with a new plank - a much longer one of that's your goal. The original plant will continue to grow from where it was cut. They are very easy to propagate.

    I have my shingle plant on a Cedar pole. It doesn't rot. I tried a moss pole but the plant didn't like it. Lots of controversy with moss poles. I'll do whatever the plant likes. So back to the plant for this baby. I've seen others that do really well on some sort of moss pole. I'll keep the poles in my storage box for a later plant that might like it.

    I bought a shingles plant at Walmart, it from Costco also, same white pot. I was just repotting it and accidentally broke a whole stem so I came on here to see what I should do with it, I also used floral tape to hold the stem roots to the board, I think it works great

    I bought one of these tonight and had to run straight to YT to see what I’d just gotten myself into.😅 I’m so glad I found you! Your hair is gorgeous! 🤩 Anyway, I bought a bigger plank from the lumber department since I knew the plant would outgrown the current plank and I wanted it to stand out more on the lighter color wood plank. My question is will the plant only attach itself with new upwards growth or will the existing part that’s being removed from the old plank eventually reattach as well? And what are these death plugs you speak of? I’m thinking maybe those weird papery-fabric cores used in nursery plugs. I couldn’t tell in the video what you pulled out. Thanks for an awesome video. I love the final result!

    Thank you so much for the video!! I've had one of these plants for a few months now and have had pretty good growth so far on it, I'm thinking of repotting it soon and was wondering if you know if it is ok to use rubber bands even as it gets older? I'm thinking velcro tape might b the way to go as I don't want to risk harming leaves/stems

    • @SuchPlants

      I don’t have experience with rubber bands as I would also feel like it would strain the stems over time. I’ve been using the velcro tape and it seems to do the job!

    I usually hot glue new plank to back of existing one instead of repotting constantly. I use cedar shingle which are tapered on one side so when I hot glue them on I match the thin side to thick side then plank stays consistent every time you add a plank.

    • @CarlaQuattlebaum

      I found a shingle vine at Lowe's. I left it in the plant section while I trekked all the way across the store to find a plank to extend the original plank. I chose a plant where the vine hadn't quite reached the top of the original plank. I was over in the lumber section trying to guess which of the two planks (both two feet long) was the same width as the original plank. I got lucky and guessed right. The 3" plank from the lumber section was the same width as the original plank. I used wood glue to attach the new plank to the original, overlapping them by about 1 1/2". My plant hasn't grown any higher on the original plank. I guess I'm going to have to get brave and carefully remove the plant from the nursery pot and see if there's any of the Jiffy Pot type material on the roots. I was hoping they growers didn't do that with my plant, since these videos are from a year ago (maybe they quit using that material). Once I see what's what with the roots, I'll put the plant back in the pot and give it some fertilizer and see if the plant growth improves. I think the plant will look nicer since it will stand out more on the natural wood color than it does on this original darker plank.

    Will the plant grow more aerial roots to attach back to the plank? I didn't change my plank because I was worried about that but now I just have two mismatched pieces of wood glued together

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  Год назад

      The plank alone won’t really encourage aerial roots. You will need consistent high humidity of at least 50-60% to see some good aerial roots.

  • @LucasEY
    @LucasEY 2 года назад +1

    Thanks for this info! I'm curious if you think it might work to spray paint a plank with textured paint (that mimics stone)? I've heard from some people that painting wood plants with normal paint made the board to slippery and aerial roots couldn't attach, but I want to make the plants match my white decor haha. Have you ever used boards with different treatments/paints/etc?

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  2 года назад +1

      I haven’t used different treatments but the original plank that came with the Hayi seemed to have a varnish/stain on it and the roots still stuck to it. If using paint, I would go with a flat finish versus gloss, and hopefully the roots adhere better.

    • @WhitneyHempsey
      @WhitneyHempsey Год назад +1

      Edited bc I replied to the wrong comment. HOWEVER if you want some texture with spray paint or neutral colors you can take some paint (house paint, acrylic paint, craft paint, etc- the less glossy the finish, the better), mix in some texture powder (baking soda, grout, plaster of paris, sky’s the limit) and a little basic white school glue. You can play with the ratios of paint to grit, add water to thin, and the apply with a brush, palette knife, spatula, or your hands. Make all kinds of nice texture and grit for the roots to grab and, depending on what items you choose, non-toxic.

Curious about what sol you’re using but I suspect I’ll find it in one of your prior videos, also do you know the secret to getting the aerial roots to attach to the plank on their own? Thank you! ☺️ Soil is from Dr. Q’s sold in Southwestern US locations at Star Nursery. The secret to getting aerial roots is definitely humidity and keeping the wood moist, as is the case in their natural rainforest habitat. You can do it if you have a humidity chamber of some sort or a grow tent/greenhouse!

      @@SuchPlants ~ Thank you so much for this video! Since it's been awhile since you repotted your Hayi with the plank, have you noticed if the sealant you used has affected the plant in any way? I'm getting ready to do some repotting and/or adding planks and dead, fallen tree branches from outside. I want to seal anything that's going to be IN the soil or touching it, but I'm worried that the sealant will leech chemicals into the soil and hurt, or even kill, my plant. Any help with this would be so, so much appreciated. Thank you.

    Why are the new leaves SMALLER now that the plank isn’t any taller??

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  2 года назад +1

      A number of reasons if you think about it. It was probably grown in a greenhouse with ideal conditions (high humidity, bright light, etc.), then it sat in a store for X days in probably bad lighting, and then by the time I brought it home, it is no longer “thriving” so it literally will grow leaves with size depending on the its new environment-my plant room is still nothing like a greenhouse unfortunately! I ended up propagating this plant because the leaves continued to grow smaller, but it is now growing nicely again.

    What's a death plug? Sorry if this is a dumb question 😳

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  2 года назад +2

      From my understanding, a “plug” is a term that’s used to describe the method of using a seedling tray to start multiple plants in. Each individual plant and it’s soil is considered a “plug”. What nurseries sometimes do to encourage seedlings to grow established roots is to wrap a mesh material around the plug to force roots to grow in a compacted manner, which is easily transferable into larger pots and soil. The material is supposed to decay over time. However, we call it a “death” plug because when we bring the plant into our home, we usually associate the dying plant with the mesh material as if the plug is the cause for the plant’s death, since it does not decompose quickly. There’s a big controversy surrounding whether or not the “death plugs” are helping or hurting the plant. It’s an interesting topic to research! Hope this helps!

      @@SuchPlants Thanks for this explanation. I have seen these things on a few of my plants. I always snipped them off with scissors since as time went on and I repotted them when they grew, I saw the plug mesh material did NOT decompose as they are said to. I 'freed' the roots of the plant. So going forward I will always remove these ugly plugs.
