  • A little history about the battle and a look at the Ravine as it looks today.
After the failed attempt by the marines to push the Japanese back from the Matanikau in late September 1942 the marines needed a new plan to achieve their objective. Japanese forces were continuing to reinforce Guadalcanal to make a push to retake the a Henderson Field, the Marines needed to take action. In early October 1942 a plan was in place. On the morning of October 7th 1942 the plan was put in motion. This area became a complete slugfest between the Marines and the Japanese defenders. On the morning of the 9th Puller’s 1st Battalion 7th Marines moved along a ridge and spotted Japanese troops in a wooded ravine. The Japanese Troops were the 2nd Battalion 4th Infantry, Puller immediately called for artillery fire. In Pullers words the Marines had unleashed a machine of extermination. Japanese reports estimate that the Japanese lost 600 plus troops killed in the Ravine.

As a Solomon Islander, I can't thank you enough for this well presented story that I was not even aware. The Solomon Islands Visitor's Bureau should engage well schooled individuals like you to promote tourism to these sites. Talking about tourism, I think the local government should start looking at ways to maximize the benefits that can be attained from this very historical sites.

A word about searching for remains in the ravine.
In 1992 (around february 1st week)
There were some japanese and american veterans with family members in the area of the ravine talking with the locals about finding any human remains...there were less houses there but several plots of sweet potato (i think)
At any rate one of the locals handed over a canvas bag with bones and misc. Pieces of equipment but nobody could determine which bones were japanese or american and the euipment pieces were all mixed in with bones,at the time the japanese families and americans decided to have a small cremation ceremony with all the remains combined..

It would great if that area was not developed. That makes it hard to see the geographic areas involved in the battle.
