Check radiator for “SMOD” and also you have your timing chains guides worn. That’s why it whines when it runs. I have the same 07. Best SUV nissan ever made!

Yep, right on the money about the secondary timing chain guides being worn. The sound is unmistakable. Also, definitely google SMOD (assuming you have an automatic and not a manual) Suggest you replace the radiator to prevent killing your transmission. I have an 05 and 06 Xterra they have 241,000 miles and 225,000 miles respectively. With good maintenance these trucks will last forever.

It could be something else actually. That noise doesn't automatically mean chain guides. Could be a Accessory pulley. I thought mine was going bad but I found out It was pulley wine

My 05 with 6sp manual runs so nicely, sometimes I hate to park it. I did a full timing chain and water pump replacement this year (not that bad), just replaced an 02 sensor, also 1 cam sensor, went ahead and replaced both cam sensors and the crank sensor, just b/c I wanted to. Make sure to not go cheap when buying a cam sensor and it will probably be the last one u will need. Also, I keep all fluids fresh and keep it oil up nicely underneath(especially if you live where they salt roads) and all around and she has almost no rust or corrosion. She has 159k and should be good for many years of continued service.

My old 2DR Pathfinder had 295,000 miles on it when I sold it. It was running fine and daily-driver and wilderness trip reliable when someone offered me far more than it was worth and convinced me to sell it. It now lives in Mexico, where the guy who bought it from me had a Chevy LS V8 swapped into it, along with a Chevy transmission and t-case.
I now have a 2004 Xterra with 170,000 miles on it. It is one of my favorite vehicles of all I have owned over the years and I plan to keep it as long as I can keep getting parts for it to keep it working like it is supposed to.
If I needed to, I absolutely would buy another Xterra, but I don't reckon I'll need to. ;)

@@godgunsandkenny It not just that they keep going.....
The paint on mine still shines like a very nearly new car. Aside from the saggy headliner (now fixed), the interior also presented virtually as new.
It doesn't look like a 17 year old vehicle in terms of visible wear and tear.

My mom still has her 2003 Xterra that she bought in 2003 used that someone bought brand new, and traded it in because they didn’t like it. Only has 1000 miles when traded by the original owner. The last I looked at the odometer, it has 42,200 miles on it. It sits for long periods of time in the garage without being driven. Fluids are always changed, and there is no sun damage to the exterior or the interior. Been a great vehicle, still is!!

You were pretty lucky with the maintenance. I still have a 2005 Xterra SE 205k miles and love it. Paid 24k for it new. But it did take some preventative and regular maintenance: catalytic converters, spark plugs, brake lines, belts/tensioner, O2 sensors, window motor, u joint, thermostat, hatch struts, and some more. I did a preventative radiator swap. I keep meticulous records and average $1500 a year when it got older to keep running perfectly including all fluids. I’m rough on it too. I’d buy it again but it helps to know what you are getting into. My second truck is a gx460 and it’s a beast.

We have a 2010 Xterra, bought it with 66k for $3k at auction. Clean title, and it needed a new shackle and rear leaf spring assembly which our local junkyard had it for $120. 2hrs later it was fixed. We installed an aftermarket radio with a rearview camera feature for reversing, Bluetooth streaming and phone calls, new tires, new pads/rotors, all fluids changed, and alignment.
Bought a kurt hitch for it to tow our jetski, the wife drives it to work, groceries, mountains for hiking. Kkids drive it to school in the snow, mud, it just does it all without a complaint, and with no other problems. Not the best ride being a full frame truck with leaf springs, but it's a simple car, with no fancy electronics to break. Nissan hit this car out of the park with the v6, good tranny as long as you maintain the radiator and it doesn't intermix with antifreeze.
I've seen xterra's go 500k miles with maintenance done, and I am looking for our next one to purchase as these are tanks.

Ive had alot of vehicles over the years. I just bought my 5th Nissan vehicle. Ive had 2 Maximas, a Sentra, a Pathfinder now the Xterra. Its a 2002 v6 3.3 non supercharged 4x4 5 speed stick with 105,000 miles. I paid $4,300 for it. It's in excellent mechanical and cosmetic shape. zero rust previuos owner had it under coated and it came from Virginia where it didnt see much road salt. I'm the 2nd owner. Ive had it a month and only work I've done was a new timing belt and water pump. We have not had any snow in my area yet. I'm looking forward to test the 4 wheel drive capabilities this winter. I've heard the Xterra is a beast in the snow. I must agree with you Kenny. Quality Quality Quality. I will definitely be an Xterra owner for many years to come. I would buy it again.

Your secondary timing chain tensioners are worn out. The whining noise is caused by the tensioner pads worn through and the chain in rubbing the tensioner piston. Metal to Metal. I just replaced mine on 06 frontier. If goes long enough it will destroy the engine when it breaks. Research it. Common problem with 4.0L. Major job to fix.

Just like yours, the only thing we've had to do in the 3 years we've owned it is keep up with the routine oil changes and we put some new tires on it and that's literally it. I originally owned a 2001 Xterra five speed and now have a 2007 Xterra six speed. Yes, it is a rock solid SUV with 100k miles and I plan to keep it as long as I can. Any opinions on replacing the stock air intake with a third party cold air intake?

I have a 2005 Frontier - I have replace the transmission and radiator thanks the the unreliable transmission cooling system and just replaced the rear end due to another typical fault with this truck - a bad differential. Other than that, all other repairs were normal wear and tear repairs. At 130k miles still drives great but Nissan did the dirty to their customers by not addressing the transmission and differential problems.

I LOVE my 2011 Pro 4-X Xterra...I bought it two years ago off E-Bay...it has a lot of miles on it and looks like it may have been treated a little rough but it Runs and looks great...A little hard on Gas Milage but it was the LAST 4x4 SUV made anywhere with a truck frame under it ...its simple, heavy and strong...Plus the Pro 4-X has a Locking rear Diff. and Fog Lights on the top... I decided on the years of either 2011 or 2012 because All the Major bugs were worked out by the 2011 model year (Pink Milkshake of Death and soft Timing chain guides) and they were made in The USA in Tenn. but after 2012 they were made instead in Mexico

Man I have that exact xterra and a few years ago I surpassed 140K and around that mark the transmission basically went out because of the coolant making its way into the gears... It is very common in that car, I highly recommend getting a deep dive and seeing if you show any signs of coolant leaks and corrosion and if so getting it rerouted and fixed ASAP because I had to get my transmission rebuilt.... Other than that I LOVE my X and I am about to pass 200k miles on it and plan on driving her into the ground then upgrading to the bronco

I own a 2007 Xterra with 248K miles on its original engine. I’ve had to replace the radiator and alternator once each. Unfortunately Nissan thought it was smart to use plastic for the return house to connect to and over the years that plastic is eaten away. I swapped transmission hoses and bypassed the radiator a long time ago though I think the transmission had already been rebuilt or replaced by the time I bought this used.

Yep..I was not considering one of these..I had a 4runner for 178k miles before the brake booster went out on me on the farrrkin highway. Toyo knows this is a thing on 03-06 models and has not issued recalls on that. After driving a few years in a '16 Mustang GT I had to finally give 'er up to get something again to get me off and on road sooo I found a nice '15 Pro4x with 70k miles. Got it for a great deal and goooood trade offer. I just had to burp radiator and replace the ac blower...was a little rattly. I also plopped in a AEM dry air filter. But after those small fixes, thing drives great on the road as well as it does off. A lot of people say it drives crappy on highway. I say nope. I use to drive a 89 Tahoe Blazer and it reminds me a lot of that. Love it. Handled superior on ice/snow this year too. Super impressed so far. I avg 20 mpg on hwy and 16 in city.
