That and the Carmine Sr death were the begining of the end. Without their best bosses, NJ and NY lost peace , members and money. A lot of disenthery in the ranks 😂 Cunnilingus and psichiatry bring them to this 😂
I completely agree Paulie as the aggressive and firm underboss would’ve been ideal, but I don’t believe that was practical because for most of the season Junior was officially the boss. In an unofficial manner Tony could’ve empowered Paulie as underboss but he’d officially still be on the same level as the other capos with no authority to tell them what to do. And we actually saw this play out when he tried to order Richie to build Beansie’s ramp
Come on Bully, we need these Power Law videos of The Sopranos & The Wire back on a regular basis. No other content creator comes close to the type of energy and brilliance you bring in your videos
On movie sets, a director who knows what they are doing will use the first-unit director to do the "dirty work" so the main director can maintain a cordial relationship with the cast and crew
They actually have a separation for the situation you described in real life. There’s a street boss and an underboss position for the bigger families. Paulie could be the street boss and then Ralph could be underboss.
Paulie is too dumb to manage. Yes, he’s loyal, yes, he’s aggressive. But he’s impulsive. Don’t forget that he did as much damage to the family as the FBI did, or even NY. Ralphie at least is competent. No one respects paulie other than being a kiss ass for Tony.
Paulie was probably the least ambitious of the regular characters. He wanted his piece through traditional organized crime channels which tony mentions is a liability in regard to showing legit income. Paulie even walked away from the Aprile crew money over superstition. This actually put him into a more survivable position because Tony didnt trust him enough with real responsibilities and at the same time he wasnt a target during the NY war.
When Furio arrives Tony changes the setup to him then Paulie and Sil then Furio and Big Puss. This makes Paulie the underboss. In a traditional setup this makes Paulie and Sil the ones to communicate with the capos and the boss, but Tony himself wrecks this by regularly meeting with his capos and having Furio drive him. A boss is not supposed to be a hands on leader. His arrangement with Junior means that he isn't the known boss of the family, or as Angelo Garepe says, one of two bosses. He even accepts that 3 NY families are led by a council. While this makes Junior the lightning rod, the fact that virtually everyone knows Tony is in charge makes that pointless. Johnny Sack's insistence on a sole leader is noted here, so that no one questions or shares authority. Ralphie's one asset is that he knows how to make money, but in a selfish way. We don't even know how he was made.
I always thought that the reason for why Paulie was given only the role of Capo and nothing more is that he was kind of a stunad of the first magnitude. But yes, it would still be probably better than to have no any consistent underboss at all. And yeah, killing Ralphie was a HUGE mistake on part of Tony. All I know is that he never had the makings of a varsity organized crime boss.
Interesting. The Borgia example you have mentioned it seems was almost to the letter copied by Herbert in Dune. Baron Harkonnen sends Rabban to pacify Arrakis, with plan to replace him with Feyd-Rautha when dirty work is done.
Paulie is the obvious underboss because he’s loyle to his capo. But Tony did try to set that up, when he brought furio over “it’s gonna be you, me and Syl”
Amazing vidoe, pauly would have def been a better hoice than bobby for underboss near the end of the show, however I think tony knew almost for sure that pauly was the new york snitch talking to johnny sac, and therefore he didnt trust him, bobby may have been less violent and less of a go getter, but bobby was much easier to control...
I watching the sopranos for to long end i love it but i like to open the episode be couse i love to listing to your voice ❤ I like your english make me learing ❤️
Good points, I would bever trust Ralph not even in a million years... Ralph wasnt loyal and he was too ambitions and ruthless Tony was screwed from day one on this business
Good stuff. I would have liked Ralphie in that role. Especially after the fall out with Johnny sac. His loyalty would have been cemented. Just my two cents.
one thing you forgetting is tony was under boss tony didn t become the true boss till season 6 when jr shot him remember he wanted the fbi and the world to think jr is the boss and tony is the under boss he should have made uncle Paulie street boss have Paulie deal with the captains and paulie the only one who can talk to sil or tony
Vito would have made a great underboss! I know, I know! But hear me out! *Prior to being exposed* , Vito was a loyal and intelligent capo regime who had never displayed the slightest ambitions vis-à-vis Tony's position as boss. Vito was a high earner. He was also a capable enforcer (Requiscat in pace, Jackie Jr.!) If Tony had somehow gotten wind of Vito's perverse proclivities first, he could have subtly let Vito know that Vito would be under his protection. The added loyalty which he would have thus won would have been immeasurably valuable! Of course, Tony would have had to "manage" or "curate" Vito's behavior to make sure that he didn't dance out of line. But esp. Vito's deviousness and cunning as a still-in-the-closet homosexual would have been valuable assets to Tony.
With respect though, you have it worng. 1. Animal Blundtto should have been groomed to be underboss with Paulie as a sub if needed. 2. The whole point of the mob is the cats paw/plausible deniablity. It doesn't matter who' doing the job as long as it gets done. And as long as the boss isnt fingered for it.
the main problem with tony's crew was most of them should have hit glass ceiling. none of them including tony himself were boss material. but when all youve got are idiots its inevitable that these idiots get promoted beyond their abilities. that more than anything contributed to the downfall of the jersey mob
I disagree, although your points about his character are true I believe ultimately Ralf wasn't trustworthy. Tony knows this ,he couldn't have Ralph doing business with new York . Johnny and even Phill are to clever not to stir him up and manipulate the situation to new Yorks benefit. Even if that didn't happen Ralph would make a move against tony with that power .
I’m going to enjoy watching this tomorrow morning ( it’s 2:30 am here in England) as I love these Power Law analyses.

Now that you point it out you’re right, Tony could’ve for sure used Ralph as a weapon against New York but he kilt him haha

You know, I never put my finger on it. But it is incredibly odd that there's no underboss in the Dimeo family
