      I feel like the manga and anime could’ve ended at the Cell saga, if Toriyama had foresight and knew where the story would’ve went with Buu, do you think he would’ve ended it? I like Buu a lot but still, Freezer, the space monkeys, and the green bug guy were cool villains.

    I think his style reflects his mood.
    If you look at the one-sheets he did to promote DB in Shonen Jump magazine, his style and proportions would vary a lot. Sometimes they were extremely simple, with economic use of lines and color, and other times very detailed.
    This man is a genius. He’s got such an understanding of shapes, that when they started making 3-D sculpts (for collectibles and toys,) of his characters, they look exactly like his drawings, from almost every angle.

    • @forgottenrelics1197
      @forgottenrelics1197  5 лет назад +34

      Yeah I've started to notice that as well, his style can really very, although one thing he always draws well and consistent is art for Dragon Quest.
      And I definitely agree that he is a genius, have you seen how they made a car of one of his illustrations by any chance? It's pretty amazing

      @forgottenrelics1197 I wish you had compared how Future Trunks looked after the 3 year time skip at the end of chapter 419 and then 420. Toriyama definitely intentionally went for that more square Buu Saga style. I'm not even sure it was completely because he was burnt out.

    His art style for Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z is so bold and iconic and so intense during fight scenes with the different shading to show moods and the sense of speed with the lines. A real artist and genius, his work will always be popular it's just so great to look at and so expressive. He created such an intelligent and imaginative series.

    WTF so Akira drew shallot after drawing Cabba!? I can't even wrap my head around this, he drew a better design for a non-canon video game than he did for the main show. Even Future Trunks looks fairly bad, his original DBZ design was muscular, now he just looks like a kid again.

    • @forgottenrelics1197
      @forgottenrelics1197  5 лет назад +51

      Yeah, it kinda surprised me as well, it seems his character designs for games such as jump force or db legends for example aren't completely skinny and are usually on point, however the quality seems to drop off with the character designs he does for Super, again it isn't bad art but more so just not the quality it once was in my opinion

    • @edrickt5907
      @edrickt5907 5 лет назад +27

      I think it's the fact that he didn't have a close hand at super, DBS are mostly handled by yamamuro or toyotaro, toriyama only gave them directions, i think he wanted them to draw their own style instead of a complete replica of his own and so his designs are less detailed or loosely based than his other works

    Yeah, let's talk about Toriyama's workload for a second.
    He would write & draw a chapter for _Weekly Shonen Jump_ (each being around 14 pages) every single week. The Dragon Ball manga consists, in total, of 519 chapters.
    For this next part, and the sake of simplicity, let's briefly round up to an even 520.
    Ok so, there's 52 weeks in a year. He wrote a chapter a week. There's 520 chapters. Yeah...that's 10 years straight. That is insane. Idk _how_ he found time to do _anything_ else at all.

    I'd say that the peak of his quality linework was during the early (Pre-Perfect) Cell sagas. The way he drew SSJ Vegeta and Trunks so muscular, smooth, and glossy vs. the massive, creepy, detailed Semi-Perfect Cell was just glorious action. Even the color scheming gives the heroes a bold, standout look, and Cell has a dreary, monstrous figure. 17 and 18 looked thinner like teenagers as they were supposed to, while 16 was well drawn as a hulking, tough man. Even some of the many people models harkened back to Slump's look. That golden era of his drawings is what I think of first whenever I hear "Dragon Ball".

    Nice video, really surprised how his art style changes back to his basic look. I do think his new designs are drawn basic as their are because they won't show up in the manga or in the anime because their are used as references, the man only writes the outline scripts for both the anime and manga.
    Personally I think Toyotarō was a great choice to continue the manga, he draws very similar to the cell arc which I think was the best arc in Dragon ball. He's great, BUT his paneling could use some more work, usually their's around nine small panels on a page while Akira Toriyama drew many few panels on page while telling a story within those few panels.
    Toyotarō :

      Yeah it's interesting how his style looks like his work even before Dr Slump. But with his designs, though in interviews it is the opposite, he mentions how he draws more complex designs for characters because he won't have to draw them again and again.
      Also if you look at dragon ball minus you realize that his characters are still drawn kinda thin and not chubby like his older work. I think just depends on how important the project is or how motivated he is. But that's just my guess
      But yeah I agree with Toyotaro continuing the manga, I actually did a video on him as well comparing his artstyle to young jiji, I encourage to check it out if you enjoy videos like this one!!

    Imo Toriyama had two peaks: one with his older style, during Dr. Slump, and the other during Cell and Bu saga.
    What I didn't like in his DBZ art is that he seems to use a videogame character editor with few options: all the human characters look the same, except for the hair.

    Idk if you read jojo, but even Araki who's been making manga from around the same time went in the same direction. They both started with cartoony designs, to bulkier macho characters (they both loved movies so i guess they were both influenced by sylvester stallone, van damme, etc), and then ended with thinner and "softer" character designs, even though araki drifted more towards realism. I'm really curious about what they both experienced to make them go in similar directions.

    Akira's Dragon Ball change the tide of Anime completely till now. One super simple example is "SUPERPOWER" what I means is RAW POWER that could affect surroundings ,MASSIVE CLASH ,TREMENDOUS STRENGTH ,TERRIFYING DESTRUCTIVE ABILITY, that can be possess. Back then Anime only focus on Sci-Fi (robot), Horror, Mystery and Supernatural Power (power similiar to ghost or demon). But with the existence of DB especially DBZ everyone starts to make a SUPERPOWER anime such as One Punch Man, etc. Dragon Ball is the very spark of Anime with Superpower genre nowadays.

    My favorite art styles is dragon ball. Like the beginning because the drawing were original and looked unique and cool and was all over the place. Goku and krilling looking all chubby, yancha and bulma looking more normal. Now kids look skinny and generic lol. And then tien and piccolo saga also looked really good, and beginning of dbz. Like piccolo and goku had bulky/chubby bodies not that muscular and the heads were kind of on the short side. Now they look generic with a proportionate body. Guess i just like weird and unique looking things. But they still look very awesome, and i really like how toyotaro draws the manga. Very good artists indeed

  • @GeteMachine

    I feel like his newer artstyle can be hit or miss for me too as there are pros and cons depending on what he comes out with. Like with the art at 5:22 of the SSB characters, while Vegeta looks a bit too skinny; Goku next to him looks passable. A pro to this style is that I do think the anatomy is a lot clearer, the line work is cleaner and the proportions are better and better defined, like the SS hairstyles if you compare them.
    As well as the muscles looking tighter and more realistic from what Z lacked. Espcially with the shoulders that did get a bit too wide imo like in Goku's first SS form. At least Goku there 5:22 has some muscle to him, but Vegeta on the other hand, his legs are definitely lacking compared to the Buu arc.While I do prefer it a bit that the bodies don't make them look like power lifers in the newer iterations the new style isnt consistent with where that middle ground is and it being hit or miss is the con.
    While the newer style has more consistent anatomy, proportions and line work. Z art had overall more proportionate body figures.
    With characters like Cabba though, I think Toei was just trying to stick closer to the artstyle which is why hes so skinny in the anime, and unlike a stylized manga, it doesn't convey visual strength and density that being relatively muscular does. Hes just an example of a character with no muscle at all unlike Goku here at 5:22 (which is still an improvement over the SSG design). Its just the legs on characters with skin tight outfits needing some work. Goku can get away with it because his clothes are baggier but Vegeta can't.

      Yeah I absolutely agree, I'm glad characters bulked up though in t.o.p. But I've actually planned to do a redesign video just about cabba in the future kinda imagining what he would've looked like perhaps in toriyamas older style because I feel he could've been much more cooler if his design was tweaked in ceratin areas especially the arms
