Now the changes in goku's design makes more sense. Toriyama did it purposefully to show goku's development as a fighter and how much he has progressed.
I don't think it had anything to do with character. Toriyama's designs for everyone were changing over the years.
@@jasonone8726 Some was character. Goku was getting older and training more. But a lot of it is also just Toriyama's style changing in general.
That shot when Goku was PISSED at Nappa was especially great. Had a primal effect to it.
3:31, the Goku from chapter 229 was the moment Toriyama reached the top of his art style, just beautiful.
You’re filling the void that AnimeAjay left when he stopped uploading.
He's back tho
I can relate to that, I missed these indef character design analysis type vids so when I found his channel I was like wow this is exactly what I wanted
He just uploaded a Digimon video
Yeah
R.I.P. AnimeAjay
guess we'll never see that Broly Movie Breakdown...
Honestly, I liked the late Dragon Ball - early DBZ art style the most. The later ones didn't look bad (far from it) but they did look more stiff and less expressive.
That's what I think as well. They used to look so more detailed and alive... Not so sharp and bland like it got later on; specially with backgrounds and facial expressions.
I especially love the angry expressions. Looked so much more expressive in the earlier sagas
King Piccolo ----> Namek Saga artstyle is Toriyama’s peak
agreed
Funny since the piccolo arc is probably my 3rd / 4th favorite in the original series and yet the freeza arc is actually my least favorite despite it being the most popular.
But yeah I also agree with the piccolo to Namek part to be it's peak.
10:13 to me is majin buu (but just from early to mid chapters, then he Just go full angular unclean rushed traces) look at panel from ch 340 looks like dbz but much more "realistic" (another good example is that full body shot of vegeta in the other World and his face and body is way more realistic with just a few traces) and he does, using waay less lines than in namek saga, making it much more polished and clean so you can tell he has a better definition of his caracters with less effort in his traces
I surprised that you didn't mention the change in Toriyama's drawing of collar bones. How they go from more angular to bubbles.
My mistake. I'll be mentioning that in the next vid :)
It’s so weird watching Dragon Ball content that is this informative and well put together in the midst of so many trash clickbait channels. Keep up the good work, you’re doing great.
Also, Saiyan arc Goku is the best one, don’t @ me.
The truth is spoken. Saiyan arc goku >all.😉
And thanks for the support and kind words! Much appreciated :)
Frieza saga would like to talk with you
Man I love Toriyama's old style! Its honestly one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to art.
I notice also that his upper torso goes from a kind of realistic, up and down shape, to an upside down triangle.
The saiyan saga have two stages of artstyle
The raditz arc: thats the style of the end of db
The nappa and vegeta arc: thats the upgraded version of the end of db style
I prefer Toriyama's style in the Cell saga the most, but that's just my opinion. Great video like always btw
Me too
I agree. I thought that was where he was generally at his best, where the character designs like Super Saiyan looked more defined and the characters looked slightly thinner than they did in the Namek arc. Though I just dislike how he first did SS2 Gohan's hair.
Same
For me it’s cell ,namek and Saiyan saga
Every 42 (or 34 if you read the kazenban)volumes of dB look great
You can tell from how Goku looked at the end of the Freeza Arc to the beginning of the Android Arc that Toriyama's style was changing.
Neat!! Could you please cover the auras and how they changed? You know the first super saiyan flame-like auras and the sharp ones we had at the end, we even had some auras in DB before saiyan arc I think.. Also 03:08 how those energy accumulations changed from those fairy-like energy to sparks (idk). Toriyama had such a great variety of changes during its run. Keep up the good work!
Good eye, I din't even think of that.! And thanks :)
I would love to see this series finished! It's amazing how much you cover with one specific topic. I love watching all your stuff mate, your in depth evaluations and passion for everything you talk about with animation is so engaging, spoken about extensively at such a good pace and so well put together. Keep up the incredible work!!
Dude, all these changes but it's nothing but... NATURAL!!!!!!! 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
Goku in the android arc design wise was like a mix of the frieza and buu arc. Still got some curvature and bulk especially on the hair while having a bit of that sharp look, I just love it.
Great way to put it!
Excellent breakdown of the style progression.
I don't think I've ever seen someone do it by chapter.
Great job. I learned a lot from watching this.
Thanks! It takes a lot of time this way but it is the most accurate :)
I do like how all these subtle changes show Goku's continual growth, both from growing older and through his physical training.
Why didn't you finish this series? This was awesome. It would be cool to see the same for more characters as well.
My personal favourite artstyle would probably be from around the Saiyan Arc up to the Namek Arc. I really like both earlier and later styles, but this just hits that spot between angularity and roundness for me.
Saiyan-Namek saga will forever be my favorite Toriyama style era
Agree 100%
The best
these are great ^^
would love to see you do another one for bulma's design as well, especially considering how much the way he drew her eyes changed between early and late DB
You ok?
Alternate title for this series: Goku turns into handsome boi.
I’ll repeat what everyone else is saying and say that king piccolo to freeza are my favorites but I also really like his look in the buu arc (wider chin and just generally older looking)
Not much fan of the buu saga art. Goku's chin keeps receeding as the series went on
Wow, amazing explanation! This actually really helps those of us who plan on making fan mangas. I really appreciate you man, keep it up!
I’ve waited for this so long
You’re quality and attention to detail will stand the test of time compared to the other click bait channels that only offer wasted time.. a true fan you are, I appreciate your time and effort .
Please don’t stop I absolutely adore these videos
Aye part two, this is a series I was looking for for a while
I like your content dude! I can see you becoming one of the bigger RUclipsrs in the db community! Keep on grinding!!
I feel like some art teacher of toriyama's told him not to draw ears too detailed, so he decided to draw them giant & detailed just to spite them.
Finally your new video I’m very hyped for this video great job man I’m hyped
Hope you enjoy it!!
I think this is the problem I have with Toriyama's new style. It seemed like before, as Goku got older and stronger, he was drawn to be more angular and his muscles more well defined. It made sense growing up. But Toriyama's new style makes Goku look like a skinny kid.
Yo, I remember watching your first few vids when you were less than 200 and honestly you came a long way! I wish you the best during your future youtube career!
Yep
When Goku goes kioken in the Saiyan saga I liked how instead of pure black Shadow it would be alot of dark lines instead I thought it really showed the power and strain of kioken
Yeaah I wanted this video so bad ! Well done 👍
Great vid man, Can't wait for the next 😁
Thanks! Next I might do another Mangaka art review!
@@forgottenrelics1197 awsome, maybe oda 🤔
Love your videos bro 💯 can't wait for part 3
One thing I really liked about Toriyama style is that as he went from beginning of dragonball to dragon ball Z the cast actually look like they get stronger anatomy was
Vegeta/Freeza arc looks the best to me imo. That and the Broli movie.
It's all about the Saiyan Saga (Vegeta/Nappa) part for me. Best toriyama right there.
It was Shintani's designs that reawoke my appreciation for Goku's character design. Made me go back and appreciate Toriyama's work and all the different outfits he'd wear too.
This is the best birthday gift thank you!
No problem! And happy birthday :)
Looking forward to part 3 :)
ohhhh, you did it! great job!
Early-mid Android saga is my favorite phase of goku design.
Can’t wait for part 3
yessirrrrrrr been waiting for this one🥶👏🏾👏🏾
💪😉Yep it's finally here
I've seen your videos pop up on my recommended list for a while now... Ok Ill sub.
The long wait is over!!
Boi we've waited a long time :v
Great vid! happy 3k bassically!
Almost! And thank you😉
That's what they fucked up in super. 9:46 Look at goku. How mature and wise he look. Just like when he tells them not to revive him after Cell's death or like after being knocked out by Vegeta in Buu saga. When he come back to Kami's lookout he is serious, mature and careful with his next actions. He had that face. the face of a man focused that is not laughing anymore, who will calculate his next move.
Silly me thought that in Super we could see again this magical mature Goku in all his glory, which had never been fully explored in order to be always the " old Goku" but then, THAT happened.
nice vid bro
Excellent men
Love these videos. The only fault I saw with this one is not discussing when Toriyama started making a part in his bangs. Maybe I missed it. Judging from the video, it would seem this started happening in the Freeza Saga.
I feel like goku's design changed over time to define his personality yet also somehow still be the good old goku we know , his character developpement was so nice throughout the manga and the art style changes to define that and characterize it ( i am not counting the trash dbs that ruined goku and made him a clown)
goku is the typical naive/idiot dragon ball super shows that's who goku really is but when he's fighting he's serious goku's not a complete idiot really
goku has been stupid, naive & immature in dbz even this isn't a dragon ball super thing
That was still Toriyama though lol
The Saigon arc one is the best imo, the muscles aren’t as hyper defined as in later chapters and it strikes the perfect balance between Z seriousness and classic dragon ball’s more cartoon style. Just that pose of him standing before fighting nappa is just straight up goku for me.
2:55 is just perfect for me. Toriyama hit his peak right here
I'll explain the evolution
13 years old - Dragon Ball
18 years old
23 years old - Dragon Ball Z
30 years old
42 years old (sometimes 13 in his brain) - Dragon Ball Super
18 years old - Dragon Ball Super Broly
I always watch ur vids in the bathroom, you didn't need to know this, but now you do.
bruh haha
It would be awesome to watch your analysis on Bulma's design as well! So many hairstyles hahaha
Man your right, it changes pretty much every saga haha
Finally!
In the android arc Toriyama also seems to draw giant pecs that peak out from the shirt instead collar bones.
great content
cheers man!
@@forgottenrelics1197 i love art. and its great to see something like this. hehe
Part 3 will be pretty great. Can't wait to see how Toriyama changes Goku's design during the Buu arc.
Great work, i love Toriyama art and its always a joy to watch this evolution videos, i still love his art but personally i think going digital had some kind of downgrade to his artstyle. but still a great artist
let's go [ *rubs hands intensely* ]
nice video
thanks!
Tbh I like almost all Designs from Z. However Buu saga Goku takes the Cake for me he looks so Mature and older
YES FINALLY
I can't find a part 3. Did you never get around to making it or has it been taken down?
Did you ever do a part 3 video to this series?
I love the early and mid z style
When it comes to gokus base i prefer sayian/ namek art style but when its ssj goku the android arc looks best to me
In anime yes, but in the manga it looks like his forehead got bigger. Frieza saga ssj is really flowy, i prefer that more
finally :)
will you cover dbs goku? personally i really like yamamuros version, especially the moro arc
Where is the part 3???
I personally like Toriyama's older style from chapter 1 to Raditz first appearance the most because I prefer more simplistic and rounder art.
Great video btw. You pay so much attention to so many details many people would easily overlook.
Theyre also the most symmetrical imo. Up until saiyan saga
Goku looks good in saiyan armor
You should review art RUclipsrs that draw Dragon Ball characters a lot like Yair sasson art and Tolg art
Sounds similar to a review I was thinking about doing on the top Dragon Ball artists on Instagram. 😃 So I could include them into that video!
You didn’t once mention his neck width (10:15) his neck game got big
Mic is too low great video.
Vaya me gusto aunque te falto la saga de majin boo...
the audio seems quiet I had turn up my volume almost to 100 lol to hear you
anyways some interesting changes there it's obvious akira changes the design based on situaions of the story sometimes we see extra details like on muscles other times not
where's part 3??
I like early dragon ball deseign and dbs deseign (top arc,dbs manga colored, dbs movie)
what is the outro music?
CHALA HEAD CHALA!!!!!
Part 3?
Plz can u do different art styles in naruto
To me i prefer goku design better in the cell arc.
I always liked GT
PART 3 WHEN
When I can find some decent scans for the last two arcs lol
@@forgottenrelics1197 you're awesome you need way more subs
please, don't upload the third part in 4 months :[
The audio here is really low compared to the first part.
If I could put 15 likes I definitely would
^^
Videos very quiet
Yeah, I had to turn the volume up on both my PC and my TV (which I'm using as a screen) to the highest level just to hear it.
Part 3 never
