Every time I hear the Lost Dog SB.. I go back to my days in Martin County and Inez when I had to cross the river between Beauty and Lovely on that one lane bridge to go to work at the mine in Mingo up Marrow Bone. It was around 75.. 76.. I was always stoned.. and there was a tavern where this old girl made cherry pies. I'd just buy me a whole pie and listen to them hill jacks play while I ate. It was a scream and the corn liquor was the best you ever had. They say when you die.. you go back to the times when you were the happiest. If that's true.. I'll be back up that holler again. I found out about Benjamin Todd because my brothers buddy was at a alcohol store and ran into him in there and ever since I’ve been listening to this guy.
Maybe it's because these guys have a punk/metal background which is where most of my roots are in terms of what influenced me musically in my younger years, and so they truly know and appreciate the power that can come from simplicity, but either way, this song feels so powerful despite it literally being a 6-1-5-1 progression THE ENTIRE WAY THROUGH. so simple yet it rocks me even after the 100th time listening. well done Matt
Saw Matt open for Lost Dog Saturday 9/8 @ the Bottleneck in Lawrence, Ks. He killed every song he played, even the on the banjo. Never got a chance to meet him throughout the night. I was sitting here listening trying to figure out the cords by ear. First I thought it was in G straight to Am. But if you listen to the changes it sounds like rhythm in the cord of C. C then Em I believe then bounces between G and C with the occasional F toward the end of the verse. Not had a chance to try and play it yet but I feel like that should be pretty close. Could also be an Am instead of Em. Ben playing this definitely gives it incredible drive. Ben is a Hell of a rhythm player. As well as Matt sawing the shit outta that fiddle!
I finally got to see both you guys in Nashville. I even got to smoke a cigarette with Matt after he played. Please y'all gotta keep this up. This is a revival of what music should be.
Man there's just something extra in Matt and Ben's playing that I don't think any amount of hard work or practice can achieve unless you're Matt and Ben. It's like there's a whole other set of lyrics to this song that are being sung through their instruments. The words tell you the general story, the instruments fill in the details. Gems on VHS couldn't be more appropriately named. These two truly are rare gems in this world
Songs like this hit me in my soul for some reason. It calls back to family I never knew that stilled in the mountains and woods here in Tennessee, and grandparents that ran barefoot through small backwoods towns in old jeans and t-shirts.
Matt Heckler's got a great voice! Amazing. Not that Benjamin Tod isn't also fantastic. In fact, it is weird to hear him be backing vocals seeing as how he's so great a singer. I'm into metal but stangely, really digging this folk music.
FUCK. YES!!! Matt Heckler is one of the futures of music and with the amazing Benjamin Tod, thank you for finally putting some of your music online. Loved seeing them in Minneapolis and Madison this past year.
I really can't explain how happy I am to have seen both of y'all in Nashville and smoking a cigarette with Matt after he played. Honestly one of the best moments of my life to be able to meet legends in the making.

The B is a minor cord. Ben plays with a capo on second fret in C. So from there the cords are C, Am, C, then G. the order and changes change a bit in the chorus. I've been obsessed with this song for over a month now, so I had to sit by the fire and figure it out one night. Good luck trying to make it sound as good as these guys. Ben is a Hell of a rhythm picker. And Matt is matt! Have fun trying tho
Amazing performer, one of the few people that sounds even better live. The recording doesn’t do his voice justice, he has an incredible bellowing sound. That and seeing Matt playing the fiddle live is a real show

Go get some matches and kerosene we'll burn it down honey
Burn out and leave
I'll bleed out slow my Sunday vest
You come around in Sunday dress
Your blue eyes dancing drag me in
Sideways glances honey where u been
And I know its hard when the sun gos down
To be alone on shaking grounds
Go get some matches and kerosene we'll burn it down honey
Burn out and leave
Don't leave me hanging from the willow tree
Honey cut me down cos I can't breathe
I'm up the mountain ain't coming down
No you won't see me around your town
And I know its hard when the sun gos down
To be alone on shaking grounds
Go get some matches and kerosene we'll burn it down honey
Burn out and leave....(x2)....
billy bong thanks so much, was waiting for somebody to find the words. I’ll get it up on UltimateGuitar with chords now
I was sitting here listening trying to figure out the cords by ear.

I think is Sunday best, not vest
Folk and blues is the original metal ! Gotta love it haha
FUCK. YES!!! Matt Heckler is one of the futures of music and with the amazing Benjamin Tod, thank you for finally putting some of your music online. Loved seeing them in Minneapolis and Madison this past year.
This collaboration is just absolutely amazing.. we need more!
I really can't explain how happy I am to have seen both of y'all in Nashville and smoking a cigarette with Matt after he played. Honestly one of the best moments of my life to be able to meet legends in the making.
I sat and talked with him in Tulsa and I totally get it. Such a down to earth dude as well.
More Matt Heckler please! This guy opened for Lost Dog in Chicago a while back and I’ve been yearning to hear more by this man.
more on the way i promise.
@@GemsOnVHSThank you for all the videos you put out, I have found so much to relate to. How does a hobo, like myself, work with your productions?( recording and hanging out?) I got pitch?

"Morning Sun" Joshua Simons.
My late wife and I wrote it about our homeless friends in Ft. Collins Colorado. It's about seeing your street family in the morning and knowing everyone made it through to the next day.
Please let me know what you think.
When th3 fuck was lost dog in chicago im gonna shoot myself in the foot.
They have a show coming up in Chicago next month at Reggie’s!
Is there a way to buy Matt Heckler's stuff? I'm kicking myself for only buying one of his albums at Lost Dog's most recent concert!
Loved Deep Chatham! I discovered them busking in Monument Square in Portland, ME like 16 years ago and bought their CD. I still listen to it.
Chords: B-D-A-D
Lyrics:
Don't leave me hanging
From the willow tree
Honey cut me down
Cause I can't breath
Climb up the mountain
I ain't coming down
No you won't see me
Around your town
I'm high and lonesome
and I'm running dry
Not giving up
On getting by
So come on honey
Won't you make me beg
Take out your fiddle
Tune up and play
Cause I know it's hard
When the sun goes down
To be alone
On shaking grounds
We'll get some matches
And kerosene
We'll burn it down honey
Burn out and leave
I'll bleed out slowly
In my Sunday vest
When you come around
In that Sunday Dress
Your blue eyes dancing
Drawing me in
With sideways glances
Honey where you been
I know it's hard
When the sun goes down
To be alone
On shaking grounds
We'll get some matches
And kerosene
We'll burn it down honey
Burn out and leave
I know it's hard
When the sun goes down
To be alone
On shaking grounds
We'll get some matches
And kerosene
We'll burn it down honey
Burn out and leave
Thanks for the chords
I think its "I've given up on getting by"
Thank you
The B is a minor cord.
Ya I just try to do a 'cover' with my own rhythm cause he's too good! thanks for the chords
Amazing performer, one of the few people that sounds even better live. The recording doesn’t do his voice justice, he has an incredible bellowing sound. That and seeing Matt playing the fiddle live is a real show
Wow there are some really good vibes.
Words can’t describe how much I love your all’s music.. it’s breathtaking
I wish Matt would put his stuff online. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
same. it's a work in progress - i'm talking to him about getting his new stuff out.
His new album just released today on Bandcamp
Know it's an old comment, but if you didn't see it's even on Spotify now!
Still here. Thank you for saving my soul
The way they edit the hard strum when Matt says, "I drank 16 beers," is art in its own.
I keep coming back to this video When I need a small sip of life. Always use it as a trampoline into fun porch/bonfire hang outs.
Bless these two.
“What’ll it be fellas, mustard or ketchup?”
Whiskey
This is one that no matter the feeling, gets you so hyped and ready to take on whatever the day throws at you. Alone they are amazing, but together is like the most expensive whiskey you could drink. Smooth and smoky 🌹
i used to listen to this w my friends..... i miss having friends
im your friend
@@GemsOnVHS Things like this make you my favorite! Haha.
This should get 600 million views
I saw him play in Minneapolis. I bought his CD and I haven’t taken it out of the CD player in my car since May. Love you, Matt!
damn not even i got a CD
If you can get one, do it! its totally worth it!!!
Which one did you get? I just bought his "Heckler's Lament" at his most recent concert, but I'm kicking myself for not buying his first album. Trying to find it. I'll trade you digital files if you have the first one! lol
Jeff I got both Katskillachia and Hecklers Lament!
Would you be willing to help a fellow music lover out? Could you send me Katskillachia if I gave you my email.? I can't find any of his albums anywhere on line. :(
Always find myself coming back to this version. Helps a guy stay out of the darkness. God bless
thank you for making real music.
The editing on this video is the best part. The way it comes together with the music and you can tell they had a good time. Magical
Bring back the Appalachian south.
Hell yeah
@@traditionalfascists3303 it never went nowhere. been here all along
Bring it back? You think it left? Son, Appalachia will never die. Promise
Beautiful , enjoying from the heart of Appalachia
Heck I love this song can’t stop listening to it
Wow, it's been 2 years already? And yet, still I come back to this song.
Still a fantastic track in 2019!!
The more Heckler I listen to the more I like it. Great artists. Had the pleasure to see both live front row. Impressive sound a lyrics from both.
Ben knows Townes daughter... I already knew Ben was legendary. But man that just adds some more cool points on top. Townes was the best!!!
I really love how they are keeping the tradition alive!
best vid in an age, incredible tune.
Years later and after owning this song on vinyl I still come back for this version. Goddamn, it's a fkn beauty! I think it might be an All Time Favourite.
I'd honestly have given a years salary to have been on that porch for this entire day.
The magic that happens here is some of the finest ever recorded. Thank you!
This has become one of my favorite channels on RUclips. Thank you for all your hard work and the amazing videos! Another outstanding artist to consider for a spotlight would be Joseph Huber from Milwaukee
well ill be danged, thanks buddy. i'll be on the lookout for joseph.
This song is absolutely amazing this one is very deer in here to my heart just means a lot to me maybe because of where I was at one point in my life when I heard this music Benjamin Todd is very near and dear to my heart because of the music and the words he speaks sound so true to my heart and thank you for putting out this music
This is absolutely incredible
I keep humming this song out of the blue and I have to keep coming back here every few months.. Matt Heckler is becoming a favorite..love his style. Excited for his new album on itunes.

@Tim DaHuman i wont say it isnt but i (being a young white man) always saw it as falling in and out of love with the same person
@Tim DaHuman was also written by matt
DUDE!!... The way Bens guitar and voice goes with Matt. It sounds majestic!
Hope this means more Benjamin Tod videos to come soon too? This is brilliant ❤️👌
