I want to thank your friend Nicholas for writing this song. And i want to thank you two for letting it be heard. Summer of 2018, i took a sporadic road trip to Georgia with my brother. This was one of my roadtrip songs. While there, we stayed with our grandpa and uncle (we've never met this uncle due to family disfunction) My uncle was a great man, we bonded quite a bit in the 2 days we were in town. I was looking forward to a relationship with him. Well, 2 weeks after we got back, i got a text at 4am from my grandpa that my uncle commited suicide. A year to date of my uncles death, cancer took my grandfathers. This song brings me close to tears every time i listen to it. I dont know what i was looking for in Georgia, but i know i found it. Live in love everyone, love people others have abandoned. Theyre the ones that need it most. RIP Uncle Mike.
All I can say is "Hail fellow human" I really resonate with you, thanks for sharing. I don't know what to fucking say.... Damn... "I" moments are BS when hit with real shit.
I’ve been here for 36yrs and there’s a lot of: bad, crime, stress, and many other things in our state. But, there’s a lot of: beauty, comfort, folks still wave when you drive by, clean air, serenity. Just look for it and don’t be afraid when you find it.
At 55 seconds she glances at him and smiles and it's such a small and sweet moment. She does it a couple of times in the video. It really makes me happy to see.
Greetings from Suzhou, China! I've been locked in my apartment for the month for coronavirus, and I've pretty much exclusively listened to these guys and Sierra Ferrell. Excellent, excellent, proper folk tunes. Well captured, too, @GemsOnVHS -- seems live and nearby.
RUclips has been a godsend through the whole quarantine crap. You also might like Blaze Foley, Arlo McKinley, and The Dead South. Hang in there, it'll be over some day.
Just imagine the feeling of playing your beat friends song. Singing the lead after having always sung the harmony, and knowing you'll never play it with them again. It's heart breaking
Two strangers I met at a gas station in wyoming shared this beautiful music with me today. Thank you kind strangers, I will forever think of you when I hear this band.
If someones dies or a family pet dies, we tell our children here in Finland that "they were sent to America". I like it, it sounds comforting. By the time when they grow they'll understand it. Greetings from across the sea! And thank you for your channel, it's hard to find this kind of music in Finland.
I listen to this song every morning on the farm before the work begins and the long day seems like a stretch of time inconceivable... and it always moves me. Know that you at least have one fan in Iowa.
I've watched this video probably 35 times and never realized she looks mad at the end like they were supposed to have a small harmony and he changed his mind and hit a high note haha. great tune.
So these two smash. For almost one whole growing season they were at my farmers market. Busking right behind me. I was organic farming and selling my produce at the Ballard farmers market in Seattle every weekend. They became the soundtrack of my summer and I have listened ever since. Good luck to you two. Walt, from Summer Run Farm.
Born and raised in Georgia. I’m in the Army now and I’m in Virginia but this song paints a picture of home for me every time I listen to it. Thank you Benjamin for all the great music you make
I am moved so much by this music. My mothers' side of family come from West Virginia coal town. Grampa died of black lung disease. Gramma passed three years ago, just short of 100 years old, almost exact. she was born on a 4th of July. Passed on the 1st. Alzheimers and dementia took her from us at a time when we were only strangers to her. It was devastating for our family. My earliest memories are of Gramma cooking us biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Best meals I ever ate. I feel drawn to this type of folk music. Born from necessity during tough times, when people worked so hard they would have dropped if not for a distraction to allow even momentary escape from a life of hell. I want to be able to let my mom listen to all your wonderful songs. She just turned 82 herself in August. thank you for some fine entertainment. Wish I could do as you two do, so wonderful.
thank you for sharing. i'm five years sober off heroin, and your music makes me cry. you both are wonderful and thank you for contributing so much of your soul via music. i lost a few friends in addiction, most of all myself. fuck yeah, rock on.
Just saw him tonight in Lexington, Ky... drove 8 hours from Washington, DC... do yourself a favor & listen to this man... he has so much to teach. Consider yourself lucky to hear this.
I'm an old hippie and I live in the Backwoods of south Georgia , Bluegrass is in my soul . " I went down to Georgia made me want to get my spoons out and I knew I would be Buck Dancing and grinning . Im glad I found Yall
I drove thru south Georgia a couple years ago coming back from Sanibel Island off Florida, stopping overnight at that fine hotel on the huge grounds of a park (name forgotten) and I must say that south Georgia is a beautiful place. Shoot a rattler for me!!
@Never Gonnatell what the hell do you know about country folks little boy? With a picture of some fancy car that's not even yours posted up in some city... Get lost.
A buddy of mine, Chase was his name, he passed on a few months back, and as I sit atop this abandoned train bridge with a few beers and some good smoke, I can't help but feel his spirit as I reminisce in my memories.
I'm from South Africa... I'm half British and half South African.. Thank you so much.. Nick.. You make my soul realize that in these tough times.. That thr is only one thing love for music.. Like I say I'm za UK.. Living in Norway... But man thank you
In case you like to sing along...i know i do: When I went down to Georgia I was on the fence about whether I was coming home and I know now better than before i don’t know lord what I’m looking for It was red red rocking chair sittin’ on the porch pickin’ as the bottle runs dry and I go there for the free beer but I don’t know lord what I’m doing here There’s a train waiting as I walk the tracks freddie a callin’ to me so I climbed on a bottle in my hand why I left lord I’ll never understand I caught that ride back to Tennessee in the dark the wind and the rain I caught that ride to the depths of the wind goes to show you just can’t win Oh, my Caroline I never should have left and you should have never stayed with me gal and I know now there’s two ways to be live in love or die in misery When I went down to Georgia I was on the fence about whether I was coming home and I know now better than before i don’t know lord what I’m looking for
I was bumming around Spain when my cousin sent me this and told me it reminded him of me. I fell in love with it. He died of an OD a year later. It’s even more beautiful now it forever reminds me of him
Cameron Moreano I don't think he means they're siblings. I believe he means they're kin to him. Not necessarily in the literal sense either just like not everyone who says brotha is actually related.
Just heard this song for the first time today amd i love it. I live in north georgia and have been wanting to move to Tennessee for awhile now. This song truly hits home with me.
This song has a special place in my heart. I used to play the guitar a bit when I was a teen, and this summer, after listening to this song for a about a hundred times, I decided to pick up the guitar once again just to play this song. I've played every day since then. So, thank you Lost Dog Street Band for bringing music back into my life.

I have listened to this song about 40 times in the last week, it really is helping me get through a pretty dark time, such a refreshing change to hear real music and not some commercial crap. Much love from the UK
As a southerner (Louisiana) something about this beautiful music brings up memories Ive never lived.. like memories of my ancestors. It makes you want to cry and dance at the same time. Its perfect.
Wow, I'm glad I heard this... I was heading out to Colorado to visit my brother from Northern NY and this came on while I was cutting through Indiana. And I was just in Georgia 3 weeks ago... Great stuff.
I'm so happy that this channel exists, I've recommended it so many people, I love so many of the artists that have been showcased on here, lost dog and Matt heckler, the hill country devil, Arlo and Sierra Ferrell the list goes on, but I stumbled upon this music and honestly it sounds cheesey but it was a time in my life when I really honestly needed to hear what these magnificent people had to sing and play, the channel isn't nearly popular enough, you've given exposure to so many phenomenal artists, maybe I'm just stoned and blasted but God bless gems on VHS man. Fucking love this shit
I just stumbled across this shit within the past few weeks. I had no fucking clue this good ass country music scene existed. I grew up listening to 90s CMT because that's what my mom always had on and i have a nostalgic soft spot for that stuff but I just assumed good country music died in the 70s. I've been listening to this shit nonstop for the past few days and unfortunately I ran out of weed a few days before that but god damn i'd love to get stoned and listen to this shit.
I'm a farm boy from Florida and I was about to road trip up next week to your Alabama show with Heckler. It was rescheduled but me and the boys will make the journey when you are back. Thank you for some of the best music I have heard.
This song motivated me to look for songs of Nicholas. His work is captivating. I lost a good friend along the way too, when we were young. He never left my heart and he too was a musician. He played guitar, even in a style, that reminds me a little bit of Nicholas. He was very empathetic, helpful towards everyone and an inspiration for many. I guess Nicholas would be surprised, that you almost hit 6 million views by now and he would be proud of this amazing performance and of everyone you truly touched with it. Of course, some will listen just for a little mindless enjoyment, which also is not a bad thing, yet I guess many feel a deep, profound connection to the message and to the melody, that are delivered. Every single one of them count in a big, meaningful manner. Count me in. Thank you Ben for carrying on the legacy of Nicholas and for doing it so gracefully. And of course, also thank you for cultivating your own music. Individual performers and Songwriters with such authentic roots and such a level of skill are a rarity nowadays. You truly are gems. Gems to behold.
I forgot to thank your girlfriend, maybe wife (I am not sure) for having your back. On the fiddle, when you are playing and also beyond that. She is obviously a great support for you, just like you seem to be for her. And thanks to the people behind "Gems on VHS" for giving a decent platform for such amazing creativity in action. Keep it up!
The more I've listened to this, I've realized something. It isn't about a dude hopping a train, it's about a guy getting drunk and hopping in front of a train . He talks about considering going back home, regret for leaving his love behind, but ultimately "caught that ride". I don't know lord what I'm doing here I believe refers to this life, this world. I was on the tracks sounds like indecision, but I see it as literal. I never should have left, perhaps he regrets his choice at the last moment. Just my two thoughts. "And I know now there's two ways to be, live in love or die in misery". He was a remarkably talented writer and musician, and I truly wish he were still around making this amazing beautiful music. Rest In Peace.
This is real music...Nashville should take notice! No designer jeans and tight t shirts here! Just real, raw music. His voice is straight out of 1952 AM radio.
Crazy to think I’ve been coming back to this song for the past 6-7 years and I’ve never once gotten tired of hearing it. Rest easy Nicholas thank you Ben and Ashley for always being a step above excellent!
this is one of those songs that gets in your head and just doesn't wanna leave. can't hear me complaining, this is beautiful and the world needs more music like this!
I ❤️this song, it comforted me in one of the absolute lowest points in my life, which is truly saying something. It will always have a special place in my heart, thank you for sharing this here God bless y’all
I've been a Benjamin Tod fan for a couple of years now, but this is the first time I've seen a video for this song! I love that some of the advert proceeds go towards Nicholas' wife. What a wonderfully life-affirming gesture 😊
And still one year later I comment. Nothing compares to this timeless folk. You want to sing and play along somehow with whatever is layin around that makes noise. I play mini latin bongos & marraccas and chickshakes but a washboard or tub bass would be a bit much for this ballad. Love it now as much as then. Thank you very much♡♥
Hello people I'm from Canada and now live in England, not much country music round here.. so glad that I have found the lost dog 🐶! What a beautiful sound 👍 Keep up the good work!!!
Hey Ben... I've been not just a fan but someone who feels your craft very deeply. I just wanna say, your lady completes you. She is what makes you complete. You are almost perfect but she completes you. To a point I've never seen before. Keep that love

Bert Okeson I had some pretty crazy parents. I guess that’s why I ended up as a musician.
Just imagine the feeling of playing your beat friends song. Singing the lead after having always sung the harmony, and knowing you'll never play it with them again. It's heart breaking

@chris lackey Agree, in a way.
But do they sell millions of CDs? They should!
Preach
chris lackey ya well, when you see some mumble rap group with 19,000,000 it’s disheartening where we headed
I cry a little every time I hear this song.

love how the camera person says "wait for the dog...ahh what a great shot". Cheers to the joys of creation.
People just being humans is some of the most wholesome shit!
If someones dies or a family pet dies, we tell our children here in Finland that "they were sent to America". I like it, it sounds comforting.
By the time when they grow they'll understand it.
Greetings from across the sea!
And thank you for your channel, it's hard to find this kind of music in Finland.
That’s crazy! I always say they where sent to Finland! 🤪
I listen to this song every morning on the farm before the work begins and the long day seems like a stretch of time inconceivable... and it always moves me. Know that you at least have one fan in Iowa.
Two fans in Iowa brother!

In this world of destruction, this is really something that blows air to the Faith
Huh?? I love your comment Hanna, but I don't know if I know what it means. We both love Lost Dag - that's what matters. Peace to you.

Born and raised in Georgia. I’m in the Army now and I’m in Virginia but this song paints a picture of home for me every time I listen to it. Thank you Benjamin for all the great music you make
he said "this song was written by my best friend Nicholas Ridout who passed on to the other side"
Townes Van Zandt brought me here and I’m glad he did. This is great music! Greetings from Liverpool UK 🇬🇧

Such a brilliant song!
In case you like to sing along...i know i do:
When I went down to Georgia I was on the fence
about whether I was coming home
and I know now better than before
i don’t know lord what I’m looking for
It was red red rocking chair sittin’ on the porch
pickin’ as the bottle runs dry
and I go there for the free beer
but I don’t know lord what I’m doing here
There’s a train waiting as I walk the tracks
freddie a callin’ to me
so I climbed on a bottle in my hand
why I left lord I’ll never understand
I caught that ride back to Tennessee
in the dark the wind and the rain
I caught that ride to the depths of the wind
goes to show you just can’t win
Oh, my Caroline I never should have left
and you should have never stayed with me gal
and I know now there’s two ways to be
live in love or die in misery
When I went down to Georgia I was on the fence
about whether I was coming home
and I know now better than before
i don’t know lord what I’m looking for
Thanks.

Wish the chick would sing more! They've got their harmonies down so well.
meefking8404 only person I know that can sing and fiddle great at the same time is Ketch Secor from OCMS. Definitely doesn't seem easy.
Guy Clark and Shawn Camp sang about one for about 15 years....Sis Draper? Ring any bells. . . . lol
what about jeremy garrett from the stringdusters?
Haha fair enough.
Check out Bruce Molsky band too! Jack of Diamonds or I Get My Whiskey from Rockingham are great songs.
This song changed modern day folk. I’d love to sing over it. But y’all are the future. Y’all are the game.

I'm a farm boy from Florida and I was about to road trip up next week to your Alabama show with Heckler. It was rescheduled but me and the boys will make the journey when you are back. Thank you for some of the best music I have heard.
So much love ........So much to Nicholas and you Benjamin
Keep it up!
Ben and Nicholas Ridout have 2 records together--spit shine street band
I cannot get enough of this song, it's an absolutely beautiful, haunting and heart breaking piece
I remember chillin at cafe coco with this dude ... 5million views? Damn son! Happy for you
im extremely glad i discovered these guys

It's midnight right now here in the heart of Europe. Think I'll go to sleep. Thanks for the lullaby, guys, I appreciate it.
I'm totally addicted to this beautiful song and their performance. I keep coming back here ten times or more every day.
This is real music...Nashville should take notice! No designer jeans and tight t shirts here! Just real, raw music. His voice is straight out of 1952 AM radio.
Beautiful. Much love from England.

I've been a Benjamin Tod fan for a couple of years now, but this is the first time I've seen a video for this song! I love that some of the advert proceeds go towards Nicholas' wife. What a wonderfully life-affirming gesture 😊
i like the doggie.
Thank you very much♡♥
came across this song in a time of great heart-ship .. Thanks alot for this , It will keep me moving forward. Michael Furst
Thank you, Nicholas .

Little known fact, women in the old days used to play the banjo for a man they fancied. Like it was apart of a courtship ritual.
