I personally don't keep Betta's in anything less than a 5 gallon tank. I agree with you what you have there is a gimmick and they are holding tanks at best..
Rachel Marie I keep some of mine in 3.5 gallon tanks too. Not more than one in each tank of course, lol. They seem happy and I’ve never gotten a bad water reading, so ig I’m doing it right?
This is such a sad product. So inappropriate for any fish. The water would be toxic within 2 days so a once a week water change would be awful. Companies just don’t care about the welfare of the fish. Tanks like this make me so sad.
Shub Shub No it wouldn’t. People are under the misconception that shrimp can live in tiny jars but guess what, they’re living, breathing beings and they deserve a better quality of life than being stuck in something with absolutely no swimming room. Even cherry shrimp wouldn’t last long in this horrendous thing.
@@Iamaguienapig thats funny because I've witnessed a success with this tank with some cherry shrimps or mightvw been necocardania shrimps however you spell it either way it would be find for someone to keep a couple in. IDC what you have to say about it because I've seen it first hand and they breed and eat like crazy.
This "tank" isnt suitable for anything. Bettas, snails and shrimp all need filters and for sure the bettas need a heater. Thatll vary depending on the snail and shrimp species
@@Anna-tc6rz unfortunately that's true which sucks you know what everyone in the betta community we should have like a day where we run around to every petco and store like that and put sticky notes on everything of how the tanks where to small and fun facts and correct all there care sheets
@@livs_critters55 unfortunately that can cause problems (like getting banned or arrested if you dont leave) however if we stand infront od the building on the sidewalk that could work.
I bought one of those 2 years ago. I realized my betta fish was sad and never swimming. I done my research and found out that betta fish should have a five gallon. I then bought my fish a 5 gallon and he's been happy and doing better health wise ever since. Its a shame that these company's try to sell tanks like those (without heater and filter).
Even a 5 gallon can over do it sometimes. I have my betta in a 5.5 now when she was previously in a 2.2, and she's just as happy as she was in the 2.2. in all honesty she doesn't seem to know what to do with herself since she's all alone in such a big tank
I don’t know if they should be banned, but I really hope people become more educated in the future about the care of larger fish. Smaller tanks like this are really useful for people like me who need a short term solution for separating fry or quarantining a tetra from dropsy or something. I just wish people didn’t use them thinking they can put an ADULT fish in without any heater or filtration. Stupid stupid stupid, but they don’t know any better. In fact, if anything should be banned, it should always be companies that sell tiny aquariums like this to stop advertising BETTA on the front cover of their packages. That’s where they all get misled and it’s false information that for some reason, most pet stores are okay with.
@@alexc5142 Very true! At the very least they shouldn't be advertised as for Bettas. Same with the 'Starter Aquarium kits' that are only about 5g but say they are great for Goldfish
This seems like a cute tank for mini Marimo moss balls. Hey I did use that temp tank on my Betta. Don't worry, he was in there for about an hour with a heater while I rescaped his 10g tank.
This tank actually dropped on a kid at the store I used to work at... (He reached for it even though he wasn't tall enough to hold it) I felt bad for him but also glad his mom didn't buy it for him :)))
I use it for breeding ramshorn snails for my dwarf puffer. I siliconed the two parts together so it doesn’t leak after being filled to the top. I then put a powerhead and filter media in the back part, turning it into an overflow/filter section and making the whole thing into a kind of poor man’s Fluval Spec. Also put in some pothos in the back for aesthetics and additional filtration.
Honestly, when I bought this 2-3 years ago, this is what I thought it was. I was super disappointed when I got it home and realized what it was. The packaging was different back then, and it nowhere said how big the tank was or anything, and it said something about a filter or something... anyway, basically, it was super misleading. The beta I got for it (got her for free because she was a half-dead fry - she was too small for the food they were giving her, so she was starving to death), lived in this for not at all very long, and then I upgraded her to an actual tank. Used this for Marino balls in my office for a couple years though.
I did the same with my one no no fish in it because it is so small it's a hospital tank that is out and ready all the time I put a 10 watt heater in the back with the filter/power head with a fine filterpad
It's so much more work to keep a betta in that little thing, way easier to get a 5.5 gallon and just water change every week. see these at petsmart every time, makes me sad.
Thats actually enough for bettas , bettas comes from our country ( tropical seasoned ) and most of us put them in those tank or even smaller and they just live happily , its not just about space , its about nutrition they get (quality food) , things they can play with in the tank and some mates (shrimp, tetras etc..),the tank is enough for betta if they can swim around freely , i dont know why americans are overdoing betta tanks . 1 gallon is enough for 1 betta actually
Adrian Branson not at all lol. Bettas are hardy fish that can survive HORRIBLE conditions, but that doesn’t mean they should have to live like that forever. A betta can barely move in a tank this size
Astrea Macgregor they have dollar per gallons sales at many pet stores, you can find cheap tanks on Craigslist (i got a 40gal breeder for $30), and even Salvation Army has tanks sometimes. There is no excuse.
@@Binnie_303 I completely agree with you! I was just comparing it to the tank she was talking about in the video. All of my bettas are in 5+ gallon tanks.
My betta Doug was a gift and this tank is the only thing I can afford. I cant get all the fancy stuff everyone talks about. Doug is happy, swims all the time, plays with his mirror, makes bubble nests constantly, and is a chunky dude who likes to lay on his leaf. He has never tried to jump out. Also, have you ever seen a fish bowl lmao😂
They're cheaper at Walmart, and I have one I put my shrimps, snails, and other small things in when I'm doing a water change so I don't suck them up accidentally. That's the only good use for them
Lizz Lester this is what I use mine for as well! Or when I need to do any deep cleaning on my tank/ rearrange plants. But it’s way too small to be a main tank.
I don't like this...but I tried to give it a fair chance..and turned out I REALLY don't like this😡. There are so many nice tanks out there ranging from 2.5 to 10 gallons. Do the best that you can for your pet and don't waste your money on this. This is a betta tank I recommend: amzn.to/2T67EZp It is 5-Gallons and comes with a light and filter (you need to buy a heater) An even WORSE TANK, BETTA NIGHTLIGHT: ruclips.net/video/bswdQq7f5Ag/видео.html
Yup, I have a little female betta in a 10g and she loves swimming all over that tank. I'm actually planning on replacing all the plastic plants in the tank with live ones this weekend!
Can't we sue the company that sells these breakfast boxes and calls them a fishtank? I would not even keep one waterplant in this thing! This is cruelty to animals!
@@CreativePetKeeping yes that too! In Germany I have not seen anything like this. I really feel sorry for the poor fish that someone who is a beginner in fishkeeping might put in something like this.

@@jaehyun6509 are u kidding me? 3 Liter for a Betta is NOT enough! A Betta needs actually about 8 Gallons!!! Go and ask real sales people for healthy fish! Bettas are so called fighting fish and they are very territorial. They protect their space and should be kept alone! They built bubble nests too...how could they all do that in 1 Gallon??? Cruelty to animals just to gain money!!!! Shame on those people!
I use this tank as my betta's "home away from home," we call it his condo. I use it to house my betta while I'm cleaning his aquarium. I think it's great for that.
Exactly! Although I have something smaller, I have the 1/4 gallon “Stackable studios” thing or whatever it’s called. We got it because his store cup broke and I needed something to keep him in for a little bit each week while doing water changes. Honestly, I can’t imagine the fun in keeping a fish in something like this. It’s so small and boring. My baby boy freddy is enjoying life in his filtered heated planted 5.5 gallon, and a new betta will be coming home on Saturday to the new setup (different tank, of course).
i bought this when i fell in love with a betta. so yes, the impulsive/unprepared shopper was ME. as soon as i unboxed it, it fell apart any time i picked it up, It was a lot smaller than i realized too with the back section attached ...i HATE this tank. i wish they wouldn't sell them now i have more betta research under my belt. Thank you for your review, you found all the things wrong with it i did. Even the lady i talked to at the pet store says she tries to sell something else to customers if they buy it. it really is only good to cultivate tank plants, snails, or MAYBE a guppie or 3 or 4 fry.
I have a cycled, heater, fitlered 20 gallon with weekly water changes for just a betta and a snail... He was freaking stressed out in a 10 gallon (which I know some bettas will be fine in, but not him). He was a rescue from a .25 gallon he was kept in for about a year. These 'aquariums' are so cruel
I've kept bettas In as little as 2.5 gal.(they were rescued from someone who bought 15 males for one tank and that's all I had room for) I've never had trouble as long as they have live plants to hide in.
@@sjsosokdksksk I have learned that if you turn your filter off for the night it can give the betta time to rest from the current since they have been kept in still water for so long and I think eventually you probably wont have to do that after he gets used to that current thats if you are using a filter or even a air bubbler could make the current to much for the betta so turning it off during the night will help them to rest a little bit and be ready for the day of bubbles and current and filter flow.
Hi Kasia, I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for the review on the Betta tank. It doesn’t look like a good stable environment for them, so I will take your advice and get something more robust and has more water volume. It was nice meeting you at the swap today. I was the person with my service dog with me that bought the Shellies from Jason. Anyways, keep up the great work. I am seriously considering becoming a GCCA member. Thanks very much for sharing 👍.
WTF!?! Even in my non-fish keeping days I would have known this looked like crap. What gets me is these types of things are given to kids. Setting kids up to fail a living creature makes me a sad and angry.
I agree this should only be a holding tank, way too small for Bettas. I’ve had people at my office want tanks like this for their desks not realizing they’re too small. I like keeping bettas in a 5 gallon minimum tank, they really do much better in larger tanks. Very informative video!
2 years ago o had one of those tanks. i feel so bad for my betta! Not only was the tank much to small, i didn’t take good care of it. He lived 1.5 years. Rip razzle berry.
I hate that these small tanks are even sold. Bettas need 3 gallons minimum, heater and filter and working nitrogen cycle. I personally think even 3 gallons is far to small. My minimum recommendation is 5 gallons. But my Bettas are kept in 10 gallons . Yes a single fish in a 10. I feel this provides the best environment for my Bettas.
I got this tank literally last week, and quickly learned my lesson and bought another *proper* tank for my fish. Safe to say I won't be making the same mistake again.
I can’t believe people still do dumb shit like this. Buying those ridiculous tanks and thinking it’s ok to keep a live animal in there! Why would anyone buy this?? Thanks for trying your best to educate people. 👏🏼
I bought the bigger one of this awhile ago because I was curious to test it out. It’s set up a bit differently from this one but the water change system really is pointless. It’s so much easier to just do the water change yourself on it. The one I got takes awhile to suck up the water, which is just a partial water change it won’t keep doing it until the water is gone because the suction starts to not pull up the water, and it still doesn’t bring up any left over food because they don’t all go down through the holes so I can’t even imagine this smaller one doing much at all. The bigger one has a knob that you pull up the get the water suctioned to the back piece, on the side of the back piece there’s a ball that floats up to tell you when it’s full, the bottom has a removable plate that has holes in it that you can keep in or out but like I said only about half the food actually makes it past the rocks to go through those holes making you need to do a water change yourself anyway which would take you 5 minutes to do with the bigger tank. Definitely would prefer for them to just make the tank itself bigger rather than adding that “filter” in the back. At least with that you have more room and can fit your a small heater and filter inside and do regular water changes on it.
I used both sizes of this tank. The smaller size worked okay when my Betta fish was a baby, but he soon outgrew it, so I wouldn't recommend that one for anything other than a temporary holding space. The larger tank actually worked really well, particularly when I added some marimos (this was before the snail scare, but I never had issues with mine) and I had a taller faux plant in the back of the tank. I did not use the tank heater, but this was a class fish for toddlers, so the room stayed a pretty consistent temperature, and I had a shelf that got fairly bright indirect light on a regular-ish schedule. This is definitely a one fish tank. You've got way too many snails in it. The marimos work well because you didn't have to worry about roots, just a weekly rinse. I liked the cup because it gave a clear amount to add each time. I used the gallon sized "betta water" from Petco because I have trust issues with tap water (even with treatment). It is really important not to over feed in this tank. I used pellets and a treat wheel and was very careful with my feeding schedule. My water was always crystal clear (except once, but even then it wasn't super bad, just made me realize I needed to do a little more). Another teacher used flakes and water conditioner (same larger size tank), and I'm not sure exactly what she did but her tank got nasty to the point I took over care of that fish too. [We also had some issues with people trying to "help" by feeding the fish on the weekend and I had to put a sign up to explain why that's so bad for the fish.] After several months I noticed food/waste was building up in the bottom gravel, and the dump tank in the back gets a bit gunky after awhile. So I started doing a more thorough cleaning about once a month (or at least quarterly) where I rinsed and wiped everything, there's a plastic section inside that's not obvious at first, but it is removable. I would recommend that monthly cleaning if you want to use one of these. (quarterly seemed to be enough, but monthly made sure I didn't forget) I kept the smaller tank and used it for when I was cleaning out the larger tank since I took time to fully dry it out before reassembling. Overall my beta was pretty happy, he loved watching the kids and stayed pretty active even in the smaller tank until he outgrew it. My toddlers helped me feed him and slowly pour in the water for water changes. This tank is small enough to move full, which was nice for being able to put the fish on the counter so the kids could help with water change, then moving him up to a safer perch. But I would definitely go for the larger version, regular size is too small for a grown betta. I just bought a new betta today. Trying a no filter planted tank this time, and the EZ care would not work well for that, because you do occasionally need to clean out the trap at the bottom. A moss or one of those aquatic plants you can attach to a rock or driftwood might work, but because it's so small, would still need the weekly water changes. Also, seriously use the cup and pour slow, and it's fine. The tank will not overfill unless you forget to dump it after each water change. Partial water change is better. If you have to do a 100% change, you need a bigger tank. I had to leave my fish when I changed jobs (technically the daycare owned him and the tank), but he was in this model for about 1/2 a year and in the larger one for more than two and still fairly healthy and active. I bought one for my nephew because it was so easy, and my sister freaked and insisted on a larger, more traditional set up (filter/heater/etc.) and then constantly complained about how much trouble her tank was.
I saw these at my local fish store a couple days ago and it immediately raised all the red flags for gimmick. My Betta lives happily in a 4 gallon tank with a heater and gets weekly water changes. 😄
My cousins have these tanks for their 3 betta fish (not together) The water is always freezing cold (can’t be more than 50 degrees, probably less) and cloudy. I asked my cousin and they don’t use water conditioner. The plants that they have are plastic not silk and will definitely destroy their fins. At least one of them has fin rot and none of them are healthy. They are always in the corner and never look as happy and bright as bettas are supposed to look. I want to help them but my mom says to “control myself” because it is rude and they are “just fish” I’m surprised they haven’t jumped out yet smh
Just purchased one of these today, and I can confirm that at least the employee who helped me did nothing to dissuade me from the purchase and gave me very bare bones advice. Tomorrow I hope to return and purchase a better tank for Billy.
When I was looking for a bigger temporary tank I kept on seeing this.I was looking for something that was more than a gallon. My betta Jupiter currently in a 1.1 gallon I plan on getting a 5.5 gallon this year. Edit:I was at the pet store a few months ago when I www getting mealworms but I was also planning on getting a heater or 2.But the heater wasn’t there so I just decided to look at the bettas,I saw so many beautiful bettas and I saw this seriously sick betta.I wanted to take him home and nurse him back to health but I didn’t have any tanks for him and my dad wouldn’t let me have him.
The petco near me is doing a 1$ per gallon sale right now so now would be the best time!(if they are near you) I think the smallest is a 10 gal though (I'm js your betta would love it and you could get him a friend )
Anna G Sadly the smallest is a 10 gallon and I don’t know if the little drawer/stand is big enough for a 10 gallon and I also don’t really know how many pounds the drawer/stand can handle. Its also weird since the $1 per gallon sale was supposed to be over, one ended like 2 months ago.
@@koalamarsc7452 the petsmart near me was 2 months ago petco just started theirs. I would suggest just building a stand since it's really cheap and easy if ya have the tools and space for it...
I tried it as a quarantine tank for new bettas when they came out didnt care for it so i put a couple cherry shrimp in it as a small planted tank and one somehow got stuck in the flow valve beween tank and resorvore. Couldnt get him out as hed swim down when the water came up so it's not good for anything
Thank you so much for this video! I've been keeping bettas for about 4 years now and the smallest tank I own is a 1gallon hospital tank (it has a small sponge filter and a Cobalt Aquatics heater which keeps it at the perfect temperature). I also happen to work at a pet store. I try to take the best care of our bettas that I can with the equipment provided to me. Some of my coworkers who have been there for years longer than I have, have told me that since I've started caring for the bettas, they are much healthier. I'm proud of this. However, my store of course sells these "tanks" and "goldfish" bowls. I have SO many customers tell me that "fish don't live long anyways" and I make it a point to tell them it's only because of misinformation and lack of proper care. Whenever I see someone looking at the bettas and considering one of these death cubes, I try to talk them into buying at LEAST a 2.5 gallon tank. The 2.5 gallon tanks at our store are only $10, compared to the nearly $20 for these horrid cubes that don't work as they're described.
I feel the exact same. Was in Petsmart the other day because my daughter came home from Scouts with a new Beta (Petsmart did a tour for the girlscouts). Well she was told to get this tiny ass tank that i called a cruelty tank... We went with a 2.5 as well for the time being, which i think is a minimum for these fish (others may feel differently) but what they were really pushing and selling wasnt much larger than the cups they were keeping the bettas in for sale. Also the cups werent partitioned and they could see each other which i thought was really stressing them. They were .5 and 1gallon tanks (looked like a dinner bowl) with dividers (as if for 2 fish)!!! We ended up with a beautiful butterfly and an orchid though (had to have me another as well since its been years since my last betta). So far they are doing well but of course in seperate tanks for now (and probably always).
. I only just bought mine only due to the fact My betta is having a hard time in his tank going up for air. (I think something is wrong with his bladder.) I got it to help make it easier for him while he is recovering.. I hope he gets better real soon, i hate to keep him in that small container but he keeps falling down before he reaches the top. 😥
Golly. I used to do girl guides up till aged 15. I’m amazed at how irresponsible it was for both the scout leaders, and petsmart to give a betta to unprepared children who have not dont resurch. Lucky that betta went to a good home with you! 😉

The only thing it’s good for is treating a sick fish... I bought one just for that purpose and it works great for that. Even then I would add fresh water every other day.
I think its better to get a critterkeeper for that, they hold more volume of water and come with a lid while costing much less. That or a 10 gallon hospital tank that costa $10. 😊
I remember as a kid, bettas getting gifted, in those vases with plants on the top and a ribbon around the top, was sooooooooooo common! For any reason whatsoever, birthday, house warming etc etc. My sweet little veiltale male right now is in a 2.5 gal, heated, filtered (sponge), and it has a lid, yay! Lol.....could be better but he’s happy for now
Unfortunately after using the vacation blocks on my tank, my water got gross and my fish got Popeye and unfortunately passed away. I’m never going to use them again.
A good review of what first appeared to be a decent product. Glad you were able to find the things that would create a disappoint for the fish and the humans. Thanks for researching and posting.
I remember having one of those, I received it as a gift with 3 male guppies, I actually never used it, it always gave me claustrophobia to see the guppies stuck in there so I got a 12 gallon large and made a nice plant and soil environment for the guppies Because to see them in that small thing gave me nightmares every night! So the person who gave me this tank saw it was empty he thought the guppies were dead and he gave me a Beta saying "your guppies lasted a long! Here have this beta, I think these live like 3 months, let me Know whet it goes and I'll give you a new one" I was totally horrified and showed him my new tank with the happy guppies and I put the new beta there, there was plenty of space for the guppies the beta and 2 snails and I've been with those same fishes for 2 years already and my friend now knows how cruel he had been with his fish because he truthly believed fish didn't lived more than 3 months.
I got a used one for free that I cleaned up and used to take pictures if I was moving my fish or something. Since it’s easier to get pictures of the Bettas in the smaller space. But not good for a full time tank
I found a use for this thing. My mother in law got this and a betta for me for christmas because she loved the way it looked and thought i could use the betta in my breeding stock. I moved that guy out of it the same day and into a propper tank (my heavily planted 7 gallon cube i diyed when i was into trying to make my own tanks) But now i fill this thing up only when i need to take pictures of the fish. Easy to dip into thier actual tanks for correct temp clean water and take pictures for ten minutes which is about all tou get before the water is too cold. I actually for shits and giggles bought the heater they suggested for this thing. Not only did it take up a lot of the space but it ruined thier gimmicky aesthetic background and heated the tank to a fanfrigging tastic temp of 70 while we had the air running and 87 when we didnt. So you can freeze or boil your fish at will! Now the only thing that lives in it full time is georgio the the plastic golden turtle
I used this once...to put all the pond snails I kept finding in my 10gal tanks. After a year, even this little "tank" was too small for the tiny snails. It was so messy and a waste of money. I hope NO ONE uses this for actual fish.
they should sell them with battery operated fish, or paint yourself covers to look like there's fish and plants in it. I'm honestly going to buy them to use as terrariums for my humidity loving plants.
Thank you! Oddly enough, this was hard for me to do because I don't like to be critical .. I want to be positive.. but I hope that people see this if they are considering getting this and get something better for both them and their little fish.
I got this a few weeks because I needed a quick emergency quarantine tank because one of my fish was sick. (I should say I have glo danios and zebra danios). I’m new to the fish community and I wasn’t sure what else to get for a quarantine tank. So thank you so suggesting the other tank ❤
I just bought this tank for my moss balls, but I would NEVER put a fish in that. I keep my bettas in a 5 gallon tank. It’s just so disappointing that people put bettas in that tank. (I bet it’s not even considered a tank)
My beta is in a 5 gallon, when people buy these seriously thinking that they’re good for fish.... Oof 🤦♀️ also I feel like I’m the only one who says it as bay ta instead of beta 😂
Nice job debunking this piece o' cr-p. For me, the surface film is going to be the first problem. This device does not skim the surface. Bettas hate surface film. I should build a 1 gallon tank with neat little sponge filter and a heating mat on the bottom. Maybe an air driven sponge filter with a built in heater! That way people could just buy my filter/heater and insert it into their small container. That could possibly be the greatest development in Betta care ever! Cheers and good job, Chris
Anna G , Depends on the husbandry. While bigger is always better, they can be kept in small environments if their parameters are kept in line. We could argue about a specific gallon size all day long and I respect your minimum. At the same time I feel that managing temperature and water parameters are even more important. Bottom line....Betta’s should not be kept in cups at room temp. Especially with a film on the surface of their water. Cheers, Chris
@@Cgraseck it drives me nuts when people say stuff like that. Think of it like this, you can keep a human in a 5x5 cell and as long as the environment is kept well enough they'll live. No one would think that's okay, its inhumane. While bettas dont need a ton of room to swim around they still need room. That's why it's generally 1 gallon per inch for a fish
Anna G , like I said, bigger is always better. Trying to raise a batch of fry in 2.5s would be great, but it would take up an enormous amount of space. Do you own any Bettas? If so, did they come from Thailand? If they did, and you purchased them, then you are fostering the raising of Bettas in tiny bottles. I don’t disagree with you. I just think raising Bettas in gallon containers under good care is fine. It is also a lot larger than a 5x5x5 cell for a human, which, by the way, is a wandering animal. I don’t like to see mountain lions in zoos because they are roamers. Bettas defend small territories, so a small container is not that big of a deal. Like I said this could go on all day. Should I keep my rainbow fish in a 6 foot long tank? That would be awesome but I don’t have that much room. I keep them in a 4 ft long 75 gallon tank and I think that is fine. Again, I like your 2.5 or bigger rule. I could not have raised my last batch of fry that way though. Cheers, Chris
@@Cgraseck so you have no idea what a bettas natural habitat is? Males defend something like 3 sq feet of territory and females roam freely. They dont live in little puddles like most people think. Raising fry is different than long term fish keeping as they are much smaller. I always buy my beta fish from local breeders or rescued from idiots who dont know how to care for them
My sister bought a betta and was keeping it in a tiny tank like that cuz her grandma told her they like small spaces. But she called me cuz the fish wasnt swimming and when she told me (cuz she knows I'm really into fish) I told her everything thing she needed. And when I visited her 2 weeks ago I saw she went with a 10 gallon instead of the five and went above and beyond everything I had to say. And her grandma saw the tank for the first time and the look on her face when she realized everything she thought was wrong when she saw that fish active and happy was great
I think the best thing we can do is support the companies.. I'm not sure if this video will make a difference or matter..but at least I said my two cents
Umm.. I don’t really consider the vacation blocks as the worst product.. I used it because I had been gone for a 1 or 2 and added 2 in my betta tank and suddenly, 2 weeks after my betta was alive and none of the blocks were there anymore and he was happy.. Also to note that the tank was clean like it was before I left. I wouldn’t say go buy it because it’s good, I would consider trying it before calling it bad.
I had this tank. It actually worked. It wasn't permanent for my betta. He was only in it for about a month or two. I think it just isn't good at getting the poop and dirt at the bottom of the tank. We moved him into a 5 gallon, now in a 20 gallon. He is very happy. Anyways, back to the actual tank. It worked really fine for me, maybe the quality control isn't good. I keep it as a tank in case my fish gets sick.
I've been working on some kits to make this thing (the one you got) a viable betta display tank. The overflow reservoir becomes a sump filter using a USB pump w/ external digital flow control, a regulated heater that resides in the "sump", and USB light. I have a few that have been going for a couple months now with great success.
I had one of my first bettas in a tank similar to this. My beloved little guy got so sick in this type of tiny tank and because I was inexperienced I didn't know why. He ended up dying an awful death from ich, and I swear I never wanted to keep a betta again. Fast forward several years and we now have two bettas happily living in their five gallon planted tanks. One of them even has a shrimp friend. Definitely don't ever keep a betta in one of these tiny tanks! P.S. The "self cleaning" mechanism didn't even really work. It just made a huge mess like it shows in the video.
Modify the tank, dont be scared of a drill, i knew whatvi was getting into when i purchased it for $16. Within 8 minutes i now have a fully working sump. Video tomorrow. This little piece is absolute GOLD! Especially for little shrimp.
I’m so sad that I impulse bought this tank 😢. But I am getting a ten gallon soon. My betta has survived almost 6 months in the .7 gallon so I really want to get him into a 10 gallon.
My sister kept a betta in one of these and it made me mad that my mom wouldn’t listen and get him a 10 gallon with a filter. He only lived for 2 years. He looked bored all the time and the tank was constantly filthy. My sister let me take the tank and now I’m using it to raise triops in but I’m adding an oxygen diffuser and plenty of elodea for them and like an inch of sand at the bottom. I don’t think it’s suitable for anything larger than 2 cm brine shrimp, but even with animals that small you have to still build an ecosystem which takes up space but triops spend most of their time eating elodea leaves, filter feeding, and digging in the sand so it’s suitable for them. I’d never put a fish in this except as a temporary holding spot while I clean their tank. (I don’t keep fish, they constantly pee which means the water has to constantly be replaced which means you have to inoculate it with bacteria and it’s just too much stress. I’m more of a plant person so I use triops to sort of keep the plants in check.)
I got 2 of these “kits” relying on the store clerk’s advice and the information contained in the instruction booklet. Not only is the kit not no mess no stress self cleaning as they say, but the size is too small for the fish. I had no idea. I thought it would be okay. I remember when fish were kept in small bowls so his seemed better to me. I wish I’d seen online reviews beforehand. First time with betta fish and relied on the store clerk that this was a simple, nice way to care for a single betta fish. It is not. Both fish (each had its own tank) died which was very upsetting - they started out as fun and interactive - loved them. Who knew what was happening due to the otherwise visibly clear tank. I pitched both tanks and am done. I feel I let these animals down and I will not get any more of them because I really cannot take care of anything beyond what this product said it would provide. I learned the hard way. There is no “EZ Care” method. The fish paid a price as did I, literally. Waste of money. But more so, this is NOT the right environment for fish. The product should be banned, I agree.
How are these retail stores allowed to sell this? This is tiny and abuses the fish. If the company wants to continue to sell fish tanks, at least make them 3.5 Gallons. My Betta is living in a 5 gallon tank and he is happy.
I have had my betta Doug in this for about 3 months with minimal water changes and he loves it a lot. He isnt stressed and he always makes bubble nests... I dont have a lot of money but I do feel him well and try my best.. Thats the only tank I can afford. Kind of makes me feel like a bad person reading these comments when that was the best tank I could get with the money I have. (Doug was a gift btw)
I used to have one of these and was a headache to clean it, I needed to clean the bottom with a shrine and do partial water changes thrice at week, and even with that I couldn't get rid of the biofilm. Now my betta has a 15 gallon tank and I really think it's much easier to keep it clean. It's not the worst, but I don't exactly recommend this product.
No it is not easy I bought this for my first beta fish and my filter does not work all it says is to pour water and it cleans itself but by the end of the week the tank is dirty
I have had a lot of betta experience. I took in a job at a nearby pet store and while I was filling out paperwork (because I am newly hired) my mom was eyeing up the bettas. Since I love bettas and love caring for them I convinced my mom that she should get one. She wanted to get this tank in the video. I refused to let her get one if that was the tank she was willing to purchase. I managed to get her to get a 2.5 gallon tank and her little guy is so happy.
where do you get snails like that ? and would you recommend putting them with tetras and guppies also? because I have to tanks one with my male beta and another with 2 guppies and one tetra. id like to get something. I tried ghost shrimp but my beta ate 2 big ones with no problem...
I used to keep my Betta in a 1.5 gallon tank and it was dieing and after getting a 10 gallon tank with a filter and a heater and many plants to keep the fish busy it's doing wayy better
You spared me some bucks from buying one.. Thank you.. At a store they told me these are quarantine tanks only, to keep a sick betta temporarily or while cleaning the actual tank or redesigning one only and not to keep one in it
I personally don't keep Betta's in anything less than a 5 gallon tank. I agree with you what you have there is a gimmick and they are holding tanks at best..
Its so much easier keeping bettas in bigger tanks ^_^
I have mine in a 3gallon ecocube that has a plant growing out the top and I think it works pretty great
Rachel Marie I keep some of mine in 3.5 gallon tanks too. Not more than one in each tank of course, lol. They seem happy and I’ve never gotten a bad water reading, so ig I’m doing it right?
@@vanessacarlson606 I hope we are lol and yes only one
The smallest I would possibly have for a betta and I MEAN smallest would be 2.5
This is such a sad product. So inappropriate for any fish. The water would be toxic within 2 days so a once a week water change would be awful. Companies just don’t care about the welfare of the fish. Tanks like this make me so sad.
Lifewithpets Agreed!
Lifewithpets only be good for the mini shrimps or like 5 cherries and a moss ball lol
It’s not even big enough for shrimp. A moss ball would be cute though!

I sooo agree...

Fish For Thought I love reading your comments on her fish videos! 😂
I love your sarcastic cometary lol. Keep making awesome vids Chris.
wassup Chirs 😳😳
I use it for breeding ramshorn snails for my dwarf puffer. I siliconed the two parts together so it doesn’t leak after being filled to the top. I then put a powerhead and filter media in the back part, turning it into an overflow/filter section and making the whole thing into a kind of poor man’s Fluval Spec. Also put in some pothos in the back for aesthetics and additional filtration.
Wow!! Thats so interesting!
That’s what I use mine for I got two in a random box of aquarium stuff I got off Facebook marketplace
I have a 5.5 gal tank for my crown tail betta with a snail.

Adrian Branson not at all lol. Bettas are hardy fish that can survive HORRIBLE conditions, but that doesn’t mean they should have to live like that forever. A betta can barely move in a tank this size

Aside from every other downside you mentioned, another big one is that the top is open so your betta could hop out...

Thank you for your review, you found all the things wrong with it i did. I have a cycled, heater, fitlered 20 gallon with weekly water changes for just a betta and a snail...
2.5 is the smallest you can go for beta.
I was that impulse buyer...not 2 days later I returned it and got a 5.5 gallon with plants, heater, and filter. Such a shame petstores sell these
I got this tank literally last week, and quickly learned my lesson and bought another *proper* tank for my fish.
I think they are going to get rid of them they have been marked down recently...👌👍Stupid small junk...
Oh? I hope they think of something better and bigger!
Might be an alright emergency tank but that's it.
Anna G a plastic cup is a better emergency tank than that
Nope they still sell them.
[We also had some issues with people trying to "help" by feeding the fish on the weekend and I had to put a sign up to explain why that's so bad for the fish.]
After several months I noticed food/waste was building up in the bottom gravel, and the dump tank in the back gets a bit gunky after awhile. So I started doing a more thorough cleaning about once a month (or at least quarterly) where I rinsed and wiped everything, there's a plastic section inside that's not obvious at first, but it is removable. I would recommend that monthly cleaning if you want to use one of these. (quarterly seemed to be enough, but monthly made sure I didn't forget)
I kept the smaller tank and used it for when I was cleaning out the larger tank since I took time to fully dry it out before reassembling.
I actually bought 2 of those when I first started buying bettas last year. Now I’ve definitely upgraded to a 10 gallon and my fish are happy!
Yay!
Yes and a heater and filter are crucial. Thanks for your informative videos about betta caring. 😎
I saw these at my local fish store a couple days ago and it immediately raised all the red flags for gimmick. My Betta lives happily in a 4 gallon tank with a heater and gets weekly water changes. 😄
Thats good to hear!
I can only see this as a display tank or one of those nano ecosystem tanks with just plants and maybe a shrimp or snail

You could turn it into a diy hang on breeder box .
That might work, although I worry fry might fit in the holes at the base.
Creative Pet Keeping try a screen overtop of the base? So water can still go through but not fry?
I bought this and was so confused about how to clean it, found your video, and now I'm so concerned!!! omg!
Putting a betta in anything less than a 2.5g fills me with rage
Thanks for highlighting the betta care , small aquariums like that need banned. My 3 year old betta lives happily in his 30 gallon with other fish.
Ummmmmm
Wot?
I remember as a kid, bettas getting gifted, in those vases with plants on the top and a ribbon around the top, was sooooooooooo common! For any reason whatsoever, birthday, house warming etc etc. My sweet little veiltale male right now is in a 2.5 gal, heated, filtered (sponge), and it has a lid, yay! Lol.....could be better but he’s happy for now
My fish lived in that for about 3 years before I upgraded it and it was the vacation food that got him sick,
This tank is great
For a transport/hospital tank
I wouldn’t do less than 2gallon as a hospital tank, just because the measurements for the medicines are going to be hard.
@@mistyk.2152 oh thats true.
My Betta loves this tank. I don’t think it too small!
I’m joking I would never buy this for a Betta.
Unfortunately after using the vacation blocks on my tank, my water got gross and my fish got Popeye and unfortunately passed away. I’m never going to use them again.
Sadly they hurt more fish then are actually useful :(
Creative Pet Keeping Yeah, I wish people would stop marketing them :(
A good review of what first appeared to be a decent product.
I get may not be best, but it's better then what the live in at the pet stores.
I really like marina as a brand but I won't be supporting the brand until they pull the unsuitable tanks from circulation
I used this once...to put all the pond snails I kept finding in my 10gal tanks. After a year, even this little "tank" was too small for the tiny snails. It was so messy and a waste of money. I hope NO ONE uses this for actual fish.
I tried it for a few weeks and it was a pain in the butt so I can't imagine how it was for a year O_O
they should sell them with battery operated fish, or paint yourself covers to look like there's fish and plants in it. I'm honestly going to buy them to use as terrariums for my humidity loving plants.
Very honest review Kasia. Really liked it
Thank you! Oddly enough, this was hard for me to do because I don't like to be critical .. I want to be positive.. but I hope that people see this if they are considering getting this and get something better for both them and their little fish.
I have this tank for my betta, he's going into a 4.5 gallon soon with some java fern, moss balls and driftwood. Heater, filter all that stuff
I got this a few weeks because I needed a quick emergency quarantine tank because one of my fish was sick. (I should say I have glo danios and zebra danios). I’m new to the fish community and I wasn’t sure what else to get for a quarantine tank. So thank you so suggesting the other tank ❤
I used to have that tank but I switch to a 5.5 gallon tank and my betta is happy👍
I just bought this tank for my moss balls, but I would NEVER put a fish in that. I keep my bettas in a 5 gallon tank. It’s just so disappointing that people put bettas in that tank. (I bet it’s not even considered a tank)
14 minutes of Creative Pet Keeping roasting EZ Care
GOOD JOB 👏🏻
I spent months trying to eradicate a malaysian trumpet snail infestation on my tank and seeing them in this tank makes me feel sorry for them
My beta is in a 5 gallon, when people buy these seriously thinking that they’re good for fish.... Oof 🤦♀️ also I feel like I’m the only one who says it as bay ta instead of beta 😂
I say bayta too
Technically I think “bayta” is incorrect but I say it anyways
Nice job debunking this piece o' cr-p. For me, the surface film is going to be the first problem. This device does not skim the surface. Bettas hate surface film. I should build a 1 gallon tank with neat little sponge filter and a heating mat on the bottom. Maybe an air driven sponge filter with a built in heater! That way people could just buy my filter/heater and insert it into their small container. That could possibly be the greatest development in Betta care ever!
Cheers and good job,
Chris
Bettas really shouldn't be in anything smaller than 2.5 gal
Anna G ,
Depends on the husbandry.
Cheers,
Chris
Cheers,
Chris
And her grandma saw the tank for the first time and the look on her face when she realized everything she thought was wrong when she saw that fish active and happy was great
Love it, that is way even better and bigger if you compare it to the bottles with half filled water the breeders use to keep them.
Great video it's a pity companies don't consider the fish when they are trying to make a quick buck!
People are weird and act like betta fish dont enjoy swimming and exploring.
I am so impressed by that betta home in the pet store!! Sets a good example for current and potential Jetta fish owners 🤩
I put my betta inside and she love it very much !!
How would you know
Modify the tank, dont be scared of a drill, i knew whatvi was getting into when i purchased it for $16. Within 8 minutes i now have a fully working sump. Video tomorrow. This little piece is absolute GOLD! Especially for little shrimp.
I keep both of my bettas in planted five gallons. 5Gs is the absolute minimum that I set for myself when purchasing a betta.
I’m so sad that I impulse bought this tank 😢. But I am getting a ten gallon soon. My betta has survived almost 6 months in the .7 gallon so I really want to get him into a 10 gallon.
Did u put a heater in there I’m trying to rescue my step brothers new betta
i like the part at the end with the Betta in the tank. I,d love to do this at my work to show what a proper/minimum setup should be.
Omg that tank is too small for even a tadpole 😡 who would do this???
I’m thinking of getting one for a moss ball?
Actually I had that tank and my fish lasted all of its 3 years without dying
Emma Fritche just because it lived doesn’t mean it wasn’t suffering
My bettas are in a 15 and a 25 fully planted fully heated with filtration.
Aww, I wish my pet store had a nice display betta tank like that!
where do you get snails like that ? and would you recommend putting them with tetras and guppies also? because I have to tanks one with my male beta and another with 2 guppies and one tetra. id like to get something. I tried ghost shrimp but my beta ate 2 big ones with no problem...
That display tank at the end is so much better
I used to keep my Betta in a 1.5 gallon tank and it was dieing and after getting a 10 gallon tank with a filter and a heater and many plants to keep the fish busy it's doing wayy better
I will never buy nothing like that it look like it leak in a couple months
Never been this early for a vid😊
Yay!
You spared me some bucks from buying one.. Thank you.. At a store they told me these are quarantine tanks only, to keep a sick betta temporarily or while cleaning the actual tank or redesigning one only and not to keep one in it
