  • Hit that "Subscribe" button if this video helps you out! Last year we used 5 gallon buckets to catch the chipmunks that were invading our garden. This year, I wanted to show how well they worked, since some folks wondered if we were successful.
The buckets can catch multiple chipmunks and mice at a time, and rely on black oil sunflower seeds to lure in the chipmunks and mice..

@@kurtm.7494 they are so easy to catch you can just leave the bucket out and they get rid of themselves probably. I set up 2 buckets the other night, the next morning one wasn’t touched and the other one had 2 inside of it. Can’t get much easier than that I just dumped them out in the fire pit.

Alterations, tips I’ve made. Don’t fill the 5 gallon bucket up to much, half to 3/4 full is to much. I know this because I actually saw chipmunks hanging by their back legs to reach down in the bucket and grab seeds then pull themselves back up and eat them. They wouldn’t jump in. You only need about 5 inches of water no more. You can also find 6 gallon buckets at Blains Farm and Fleet which are a tad taller and work better yet. I also smear just a smudge of peanut butter just above the water line so the scent makes it even more irresistible. In winter time, add something to the water so that it doesn’t freeze and you can trap all year.

I tried it last year when my garden was being destroyed by chipmunks and it was highly effective. We haven't needed it this year. Last year was an unusual season for us. We don't typically have chipmunks. It was weird to go from pretty much no chipmunks to being inundated with them. Glad to see it's so effective on mice because we struggle with mice constantly. Thanks for making that video.

I had little faith after your first video, but tried it out. It works VERY well. I'm finding we have an infestation somewhere. They're pretty destructive under concrete and they like to dig up things in the garden.

  • @pauldionne2884

I've used this method a few times and it works well. There is some planning needed if you don't have a back forty to dispose of both the critters, seeds, and the resulting smelly water. You don't want to dump the seeds anywhere near your property as they will continue to attract rodents. I screened them out, bagged and disposed. Same for the critters. The rancid water can be poured out away from the house. Switched over to a small haveaheart trap and relocation across town method that is less messy for my close quarters neighborhood.

Looks great, did You ever get any inquisitive birds getting trapped? If not, looks like a good idea. Thanks.

I’ve never had a bird trapped. I’m guessing maybe they sense the water is there?

True enough. But, do you have a garden? And if so, do you have problems with critters (especially chipmunks) eating the crops you depend on? And if so, how do you deal with them? I'd love to have an effective, non-lethal way to deal with them, but haven't found one yet.
