The Unexpected way to tweak a Marshall JVM410H to sound like a Plexi!

- In this video I play a Marshall JVM410H 100W tube head through a 1982A/B Full stack, where the top is '76 Blackback and the bottom is '71 Greenback. I'm using a 2008 Gibson Les Paul R9. This is the conventional way to tweak a JVM to Plexi tones, but it's the one I like best.

Cheers Chris! ;-)
Hi.. Just purchased the JVM205H and I will try for sure these settings. Amazing amp!! couldnt be happier!!!
I never thought to try this channel with next-to-no gain. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
The JVM is a monster amp and I think its underated. It can do almost any Marshall tone.
I think most models of Marshalls can be tweaked to sound like other models. They all follow the same basic formula!
@@DMSProduktions yeah but the JVM is the best of all them in versatility alone !
@@AuntAlnico4 Oh, for sure Jen!
I keep hearing that. Is it really true? I tried one years ago and wasn't that bad of an amp. It had way too many buttons for me to make sense of it.
I've owned one for years. It really is a great amp. It takes some time to bond with it because it has so many choices. Lots of killer tones in there, though.
The JVM is an amazing amp, doesn't get enough respect.
Amazing. I've owned this amp for about 15 years now, but I never had the idea to try this. Nails the "Kiss Alive" tone. Surely giving it a try! Great Job, Johan!
Thanks, glad to hear it
....one more thing: The JVM410H is pure tube power - no semi conductors in the signal path :) keep up the great work!
Johan, I want to thank you for your channel and for this video. Today is my third day with a 210-h JVM. It only has the OD2, and everyone talks about how good the OD1 is. I also own a 2525h jubilee and love the gain around 6-7 with some slash-is settings, but a tad more aggressive as I like it. Today, before watching your video, I was using gain all the way up and resonance all the way down. I tried to a/b my jube with the jvm with no good results. It made me think that the OD2 channel was no good. I came to RUclips, watched your video, and boom. I just spent another hour playing. The amp opened up. The aggression that I love about the jube is there on the jvm, and OD2 is not my favorite channel. Sir, you are a jewel to the guitar community.
🫡🤘🏻
My favorite Marshall amp by far. 4 channels of tube goodness 😊
Sounds rockin’! Digging the Kiss/Ace riffs and sounds. Perfect!
Thanks, great to hear that!
That's the best tone I've ever heard from a JVM410H!
Thanks Ryan! Great to hear that
Super video.
It’s all in there. One has to just go in and find it.
Like drilling for tone.
Thanks for this video ive had one on order for almost a year now it should come next month pairing it with a 1960av cab
Sounded fantastic! So versatile and so many killer tones to be had by just turning the knobs. Great stuff as usual Johan. God bless and Marshall on 🎸😎👍
Thanks J!
Great video Johan! Perfect riffs Loved the sound of the amp, had one for 7 years or so and would never ever sell or trade it in for anything
Thanks JJ!
Yo - Johan! I have a JVM410H and just got done jamming with this method. Although I was on the green channel...but same thing- almost no bass, high mids, high resonance, full channel volume. I normally live on the crunch channel green or amber modes. But this!!! This channel reacts more and is more dynamic with the guitar volume knob. Like a good plexi, it seems like there is less to hide behind on this channel! 😀 I love it, and will be using this a lot. I love how it cleans up with the volume knob, then you can crank for some great dirt when you need (sounded great on tele and les paul). It's awesome!! EDIT: I have a JCM800 Lead - 1960 slant cab with G12-75's so it doesn't quite sound as good as yours with those greenbacks. Your cabs sound killer by the way!
Thanks glad to hear it!
I’ve had a combo for about 13yrs and still dig it
Great tones and playing Johan! You're inspiring me to fire-up my 410 and try to replicate what you did.
Great to hear that! Cheers!
Sounds great Johan! Amp is extremely versatile. Great cleans too!
Thanks Joe!
Great stuff as always, I've got this amp and I couldn't be happier. It basically does all the Marshall tones that I need (The Plexi is my favorite amp, but I need a bit more versatility for the money).
Thanks Ricky!
410 is a wonderful amp. It gives you 95% of every Marshall ever made. Such great value for all it does.
I've had both a 410 and now I have a 205H, which I actually like more. I ditched my Bogner Exstacy for them!
Does the voicing of 205 differ from 410?
@@JohanSegeborn I don’t think so. It’s basically a 410 without the clean orange/red and OD1. Plus it’s 50 watt too.
Great demo of an awesome amp, I am lucky enough to own one, and you can get just about any tone you need for any genre there is out of this beast, I am always boggled why some owners feel the need to put a TS in front of it for more punch, when it already packs more punch, and has more gain than you would ever need! Anyway thanks for doing this, quality content as always !
Thanks Robert!
TS tightens it up more than it can do naturally. Especially if you use lower output pickups. Definitely a use case for a boost
it is even better with a boss blues driver 2. It tightens the lows without removing them.
@@WickedJester77 yes, I guess their use is situational and there can be a need, I am not criticising anyone who wants to do this - far from it! I use an exotic clean boost on mine, it really helps the mids and highs chime and gives them more detail
I have the same amp. Playing through a Gibson Explorer (2016 model) going through a full stack of 1960A and B cabinets with the stock speakers and holy fucking shit this tone rules...
Recently fell in love with mine all over again ❤
🎸Strong the Ace is in this one! Awesome sound and licks Johan 🤟🙏
Thanks Clive! Glad to hear it, Ace is what I’m usually going for!
Came here to say the same!
Awesome Johan - Thanks a lot - this video made me buy one of these bad boys Yesterday - It gives me awesome overdriven plexi tone through my 1960TV equipped with G12M greenbacks :) You rule!
I mean it is close. It's just no cigar for me. The only thing that sounds truly like a Plexi, is a Plexi. And that's why it's as legendary as it is. Great tones Johan as always. Well wishes from Washington State.
Thanks! Cheers from Gothenburg!
It could be great know if Santiago Alvarez who designed the amp was aware of this particular "feature" which in fact allows jvm to cover every Marshall amp..
Great as usual Johan. Technically with the JVM, to get it closer to Plexi response, set the overall Master volume to full too, and if possible, run a clean boost in the series fx loop to slam the power section harder (tip...run the loop by using the parallel send into the series return)
Also OD2 is actually a more scooped channel than OD1 which has a more traditional Marshall mid voicing, and by keeping both resonance and presence on zero, you get even more mids.
I've A/B'd the JVM with a 1987X and the JVM actually has more mids than the 1987X when set in the above way.
Thanks, great feedback. We can A/B 410H and 1987X. I actually, surprisingly enough preferred OD2, despite of the modern voicing
Hmm I need to try this I have a jvm hjs and Iv thought of buying an actually plexi because it’s just so fizzy and sizzly . The crunch channel as the densest tone (which isn’t much) and the other OD channels are just too gained up without enough cleanness and body to the tone .
I honestly don’t know if I could really get it to plexi land. It’s just top end prickly and squished
@@heythere6983 I have the regular JVM so the HJS is actually known to be less harsh and with less gain than the regular one. However, the trick with the JVM is to use pretty extreme settings (no presence, little or no resonance, treble on zero, and mids cranked) and to hammer the power section harder with a clean boost in the loop. Also be sure to use Greenbacks and not V30s as any speaker with an upper mid spike will bring out some of the harshness of the JVM, even though the HJS definitely has a smoother top end. Run it with all volumes on full as that will be much closer to a Plexi too, and just adjust the gain.
You can also do some pretty cool mods to the JVM to get it into Plexi land. The JVM forum has a whole list of these, with the "plexi mod" being a great one, and the adjustable negative feedback mod is also a must to make the amp less stiff.
I’ll check it out, when Iv seen videos of the two compared the original definitely seemed darker to me . I think there’s a video you can search on here of the two back to back , channel per channel.
If I remember correctly the hjs has more bite on the top for sure .
I’ll see if I can find videos and sound clips of mods because I wouldn’t necessarily be up for paying a tech if I don’t know how itl sound but I will do some research thanks.
@@heythere6983 The HJS has less bite than the stock JVM. Satriani got Marshall to change the overall voicing to be smoother. I've had the mods done to my stock JVM, but for some serious JVM plexi action, check out Johan's video of a modded HJS:

Just try your settings with a JVM 205H. It works very, very well ! Many thanks
Great video. I also prefer on my Marshall 410 high Pre Volume and low Gain. It simply sounds more alive. I added additional the Choke mod and some minor changes in OD1 and OD2 to get a nice controllable feedback.
got a set of jvm410hjs, havent play it quite a while, never know it got this kind of potential!
Sounds great, saturated enough! I like the sound especially when the “mostly room” mode on! It’s fat and oomphy
Thanks Roman!
You proved it in the first setting with the gain around 2. :) Sounds exactly like KISS Alive!. I have the Joe Satriani model. The only complaint I have about that amp is that it is not bedroom friendly. Live, it is the best thing I have ever wanted.
I own n Love this amp. Much better than the TSL, more defined. Monster of an amp
Sounds just incredible!! Wow 🤘🤘🤘!
Thanks!
Ooo mommy mommy, lookit all them KNOBS (!)
(I thimk I may've died an' gone ta knob heaven)
Luv the sounds you're squeezin' outta that there R-9...
Thanx Johan and Cheerios
Love the old Kiss riffs \m/
I heard this being recorded (that or it was the B1Bs taking off from the nearby USAF base nearby in Fairford in the UK). No fairly sure the wind was blowing this our way from Sweden. Whether is is accurate or not it is a mighty tone.
ruclips.net/video/OHnQXBIFLDA/видео.html very similar but Johan is louder
Ace Frehley lead gitah! \m/
I think most Marshall models can be tweaked to sound like others!
Excellent ! Still, the Super has a voice of its own... to my ear 😉
Thanks Rene
Has all the tones. Great playing Johan only bug is modern Marshalls like this have a bogus bias system on the power tubes that causes problems for techs like me down the road. Cheers!
Cheers Darrell!
Marshall cheap skates they are putting the bias controls and fuses inside the amp, the tsl was the way to do it
@@capitanvonchickenpants8492 you got it Bro.
You unearthed a fantastic and very unorthodox setting, Johan! Very Led Zep with a Gibson Les Paul. And it also works with a strat. Killer Hendrix and Frusciante tones! Thanks man!
Wow, great! Thanks for sharing it! Yesterday I connected my R9 and set the JVM like this. Really nice sound. Maybe a little sizzling because of the 1960A T75s and maybe because I haven't done any mods on my JVM. Have you modified your JVM?
Hi, Johan!
With some knowledge and motivation its possible to do very nice things without no material from the store! Nice sound, that's 100%. See you!
Z.
Thanks Zigfrid!
From 7:50 to 8:15 Close mic is sneaking his way towards the center of the cone without your consent... Be careful to whom you work with Johan, mics don't behave nowadays! Great tones, maybe better suited to vintage metal with that compression IMO. Cheers!
Hahaha! You’re right! And the tone remains basically the same. Very revealing
Nice Ace - Alive! solo quote.
Thanks again Johan!
I've done the same settings and changed some of them to fit my guitar better. I do not have greenbacks or blackbacks. I have g12 75s I believe. I can't seem to get it to sound like a plexi :/
Sounds killer.
sounds great!
Thanks! Great to hear that!
Going to have to try this ,Thanks 🤘🏻👍🏻🎸😎 have a new 2x12 with a Weber scumnico and m75 scumback 😎
Was hoping to hear that Hey Joe tone. :(
is the crunch channel any good on this one? I would have thought crunch with the master cranked would be the way to go.
All channels are great actually
Is Dada Friedman than man to send your amps to now for mods?
Definitely sounds dimed in great tone
Why not on the OD1 Red channel? Do you think that would be closer to a plexi?
hopefully you can try to get a jvm satriani edition.
I need to fire up my JVM410H over the xMas break, so I can try this... I need to wait till I have the house to myself of course.. 😬
Satriani does always crank the od channel volume on his jvm410, tone almost same except you crank the mids... this is interesting
Cool. Can it be done with OD1 as well?
Hi, yeah probably, its a bit middier
I was looking at one of those mojotone JMP style amp kits, but I’m finding JVMs for a lot less than what I used to see them so I might just go for that instead
I just had my jvm 410h revalved at Marshall yesterday. I think I’m going to sell my silver jubilee. The jvm can do any Marshall easily.
Can you do a video where you make a 2203X sound like a plexi?
Do you know how to get a tapping sound out of the jvm?
Congrats for the video , Johan :) Try Engl Retrotube, you'll be surprised :)
I thought the JVM sounded good until I heard the Superlwad parts in comparison. The JVM sounded a bit fizzy.
I wish I could afford one of those!
Amp sounds good, I think all the knobs and switches scares guitarists off, to much to tweak, give me 6 controls and I’m good?
I find with the DSL40 CR the best vintage Marshall tone you can get from that amp is the ultra Gain red with Gain rolled down to 2 or lower and the bass rolled off to almost zero. It sounds far more classic Gain than the actual classic Gain Channel
Interesting
3:45 is that an Ace Frehley lick?
I have heard the JVM doesn’t ‘feel’ very good?
Nonsense. It’s my favourite Marshall and I’ve had a lot
Get the ' london city' out again!
Lite parasite o snowblind känsla.
Thanks! Two of my all time favorite tracks!
Surely the JVM sounds cool, but I still hear a big difference, especially in the mid and bass section as well as in the gain structure. This is totally neutral and objective, I just wanna say do yourself a favor and buy a Plexi if that’s the sound you’re after otherwise you’ll buy twice.
Have JVM410h. Sounds like a beast but really low Marshall quality control: for one year replaced hole amp and second one repaired twice on service shop!
No good Marshall… NO GOOD!!!
:-) :-) :-)
That proves once again that 70% of your tone is speakers and pickup....
The crunch channel IS the plexi sound. It has a very similar circuit to a plexi, a lot closer than than the OD2 channel Johan is using. That's why his tone is nothing like a plexi tone. Really don't know wtf he is trying to do here
Dumb comment
