I’m an Australian Vietnam Vet and took up woodworking as a hobby a few years ago. I started with mainly power tools and have recently started working working with predominately hand tools. It has now become my therapy and I feel at peace when in my shed (shop). My alcohol consumption has decreased and my sleep improved. I can attested to the benefits of working with one’s hands. RUclips has been my teacher and I have watched most of Rob’s videos and I’m even improving somewhat. I have a son who married a Canadian lass and is living over there. I hope to one day visit.

Same here. He called me after i purchased some chissels from him. It was a nice surprise. Ive bought a few things from him since and i gotta say, his tools are top shelf. I really dont use any other chissels anymore.
I got a call probably on the 3rd purchase I made. It was a pleasant surprise, I had no idea he did that. Even talked for a few minutes. I hear they sell a couple hundred of the dovetail saws alone every month. So they probably have a ton of orders and he's not able to keep up. @@plumbum6558

Love both your shows. My father served during WWII. He enlisted prior to war time but due to broken collar bone as a youth they said he would never see combat. When war broke out he was kept stateside. Only one from his company alive after the war. I’m here because of a broken collar bone. I’ve known several vets over the years and have heard their stories and seen how war has effected them. Glad for the work you are doing in their lives.
That is a very great story about something so small causing you to be born downhill. My great grandfather was in the air force in ww2 and 1 night it was steak night and the base he was at got attacked and he stayed behind to finish his steak and the rest of his squad died on the runway. I was born due to someone not leaving his steak behind.
That really made me appreciate Rob Cosman a lot more. Before that I just admired him as a woodworker, but I see now that it goes far beyond that. In general, you three really gave an extremely positive and kindly vibe, and it was very pleasant and heartwarming to watch.
I missed your beginning. My step-father, through a long story, served in the Navy 8n WWII, the Army in Korea, and the Air Force in Vietnam. At age 80, approximately, his PTSD resurfaced. Thank you for all you do, Ron. And thank you, James and Sarah, for supporting it.

If PHP alone is not enough to make you go and visit Rob Cosmans website know that he also makes the best dovetail- and tenonsaws in the world!
Missed you live, but I have a couple things to comment on. Rob, you said you don't see a lot of females doing woodworking. Post-retirement, I have been taking woodworking classes at my local Community College, and we have quite a few female students. For the most part, they are all very talented in both their design ideas and their proficient execution. Everything from the classic intro class where we make a small bench (or is it a stool?), to bent lamination chairs, to cabinetry to lutherie. I had a class in CNC routers and we took a tour of a local cabinet shop. They had quite an impressive operation going on. There was one 50-ish man back in the corner that did traditional methods. During a Q and A, I asked the owner if he still sees the old non-computer techniques in his new prospects, and he said that pretty much, they are all CNC educated and he is hoping that one man stays around a while. So, here's to hoping that people like James and Rob and Peter Sellers can keep inspiring a next generation to keep the craft alive.

The best guess I’ve heard why the Stanley no.1 exists is Stanley just went out and found every wooden plane out there and made a Bailey pattern plane for every dimension of wooden plane they found. And there just so happens to be coffin smoothers that are 5 1/2” long.
I cracked up @ 10:43... Rob is a few hours from me, I'm in the Halifax area. I watch both of you, and guess what, I"m a 35-40yo programmer who wants to be more hands on and in my free time, I find it calming, both mentally and physically, to be in the garage and able to focus on something, not 1000 variables, processes and dependencies.. Man did you nail the demographic :'D
Thanks to you both for all you do. Agree with Rob completely, biggest draw to owning antique hand tools is the history in them. The quality and durability is just icing on the cake.

As a programmer (who took wood shop in middle school) i kind of wished the wood shop started with more hand tools. And i wanted a more active hobby. And i like making things. Saw a couple of the hand tool shows and thought... that may be fun. Got a crapy 20$ menards plane and liked how it "fealt" to use. So started looking more. Been a crazy year of slowly trying to get stuff. And then wood prices skyrocketed. Sooo slowed for now

It's so awesome your first interview was with a Canadian! I've considered driving up to Rob's shop since I'm only a province away. Also, you definitely need to cross some of Canada off your map. I'd be more than happy to be a local guide in Nova Scotia!

10:30 Thanks for pointing that out Developers have the big problem of working on things that is very difficult for the profane to evaluate the actual effort put into it, sometimes it's overvalued and and most of the time it goes completely unnoticed. Not saying woodworking is exactly the opposite but people can appreciate a good piece of furniture without having done the same thing by themselves, plus there's a good chunk of problem solving and pattern recognition skills that can be reused in woodworking more often than in classic arts like painting, drawing etc
I'll clarify, we can do this without donations, we did it that way in the beginning after getting started with one sizeable donation that covered most of the cost of the first class. The next 4 classes we pretty much funded ourselves and would again if needed. After begging for money in the early years, I came to realize that the reason I do it is because of the way it makes me feel. I changed my approach and started offering others the opportunity to have that same feeling. Want to help change the life of someone who put theirs on the line for all of us? When you are in the service of your fellow beings you are only in the service of your God.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo interesting. I wish I could reach a younger demographic just because I want to get more new people into woodworking but for whatever reason my audience is older. The real kicker is I’m 29.

The money only comes in through donations, but they have always gotten what the PHP needs.
