- HOW-TO ADJUST THE ENGINE RPMS ON A BRIGGS AND STRATTON LAWNMOWER
In this video I show you one way of adjusting the engine speed on a Briggs & Stratton Quattro lawn mower engine. Using a tachometer to measure engine RPM is better but not always necessary.

Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

Thanks for posting this video. While mowing the lawn with my MTD/Yardman, engine speed suddenly dropped to an idle. After watching your video and checking the mower, I noticed that the throttle control spring was missing. Lacking the proper replacement part, I used the spring from a ball point pen. The mower started right up and now runs at normal speed.
So helpful! Saved me a trip to the mower shop. I appreciate that your video is short and to-the-point, with clear explanations and a good view of what you actually do. THANKS!
Hi Don, love your vids, keep up the great work.
I usually just bend the tab out were the governor spring attaches to put more tension on the spring and raise RPM. Is that wrong?
Took my spring off, forgot how it was aligned, this video helped and taught me a new trick. Thanks.
thanks from Ravensthorpe Western Australia
thanks man, am good with a wrench but was clueless to this. spark plug, oil change and air filter along with a spring clip and I have a new mower. thanks again
excellent. short, concise and straight to the point, told me all I needed to know in minutes thank you
This is all great and all but, you should have some way of actually checking the RPM to verify the top RPM......
Thank You! Helped me with my Briggs &Stratton MDT
i fixed right now 07,08,2019 my craftsman lawn mower thanks to you ..thanks .
Our's had become disconnected. We were about to take it to a shop. Thank you so much!!!
Donyboy, you are soooo smart !! I love how you fix motors. I have been a big fan of your for a while now.
Thank you so much for this very informative video. It helped me a lot. Blessings.
This was exactly my problem on our 13 year old 6.5 hp Sears push mower. It works great again. Thank you so much for your video!
Ok thanks also I changed the oil had no idea what was in the machine befor but I've put sa 10w30 but it had started smoking and giving off a funny smell SOS for all the pestering comments
you can use a tachometer for small engines or some auromotive ones work too
So whats speed should briggs engines be set to with a tachometer?,there are many different models 3/4/6 etc?
Thank you sir!
My lawn mower at camp started running erratically after going through some bushes. Your video showed me how to adjust the throttle but I also realized that something must have bent the metal attachment the spring was attached to and when I straightened that out it ran much better. Then I gave it just a nudge to bring it up from the factory setting.
Thanks very much!
Thanks just had a spring get disconnected fixed it
Thanks Donyboy73, keep up the good work, like always, very useful info man
thanks David
Hmmm mine looks the same but doesn’t have the big lever in the front. Is that normal?
Thanks. I ran my mower under a bush and it got stuck so I yanked it out. The engine raced and then settled at a super low rpm. I think this is what I need to check out
Man $6 for that little governor spring, ugh. Little fuckers are expensive. Does anyone know where to get them cheaper?
Awesome tip. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow in my mower
Wow, so easy. Thanks!!!!
Saved me a trip to the mower repair guy, waiting a week, and probably $30.
@donyboy73, the easier way to adjust the revs is to bend the tag that you took the spring off towards the front of the engine, if you didn't already know
jeffy0807 also I have good luck just rotating/twisting the spring to make tighter.
Another way but it’s not your channel. Lol
Always check and adjust, WITH A TACHOMETER.
My briggs and stratton sprint classic engine 148cc 450 model mountfield lawnmower won't rev much, even moving the throttle manually, still won't rev high at hall regards colin from croydon surrey England 👍 👍
the blade wasn't balanced
Great video, it help me out! While doing a tune-up, I checked the springs and sure enough, the little spring wasn't attached! I was able to cut the grass but, RPMs we're going up and down so, I'm sure a clean out of the carburetor will fix that!! 😉👍
If it wasn't for people making helpful videos like this, I don't know how I would get things fixed without money? 👍❤
been watching your very helpful vids for over 3 years (via tv/youtube) and long overdue in expressing my appreciation for your very helpful and easily understood youtube posts for repair and maintenance. Thanks so much for your valuable assistance! Best Regards.// Oregon
I need to lower the RPM on an old pressure washer motor I swapped onto a push mower, it’s way too high!
Perfect - exactly the advice I needed!
Thank you for the clear instruction on mower adjustment of engine RPM's.
Hey Don! Great video, I know this is a late question but I have the exact model and was wording if you would be so kind to tell me what model is that. I can't find the maual many years later. Thanks
Donyboy73...I am just putting this here to mark this video because I have the quattro and not the standard briggs and stratton lawn mower. I wish I did because this one is making it more complicated because of all of the links associated with it. My engine is idling too high and I know that it is not a good thing. I am going to have to go back in and have another look at it. Please message me back, so that it will be easier for me to access this video. Thanks!

Very clear demo and explanation. Great vid, thank you!
Thanks mate works like a charm, I was about to brick the carburetor!
Hi DonyBoy. I have a 3,5hp classic that seems to run at about double rpm as what it is supposed to , no matter if I shut the throttel. Is there anything else than the linkage you show on the video that I need to play with?
I did this but then it idled too high so I bent the tab so it idled fine but then it didn't rev high enough again. I kept cutting the spring and bending the tab but I'm just going around in circles. I must be doing something wrong but can't work it out.
any body know how to speed reduce briggs and stratton engine #. 300 series & 4.5 hp
I got s 1998 mower. Almost the same setup. My problem the engine rev too high.
Worked perfectly. Thanks for the video !!
You gave me some food for thought with my Quattro ,thanks very much.
I have a similar motor, its has a plastic camshaft.I'm yet to pull the sump off but need to to fix the timing.Does this motor have timing marks, if not. what's the easiest procedure to set it.What the blade blade bolts onto is stuck fast, once this is off I will be able to remove the cover.10A902a 2073 B1 - Victa Quattro 4.0hp
you need a new cylinder kit, the oil only bring up the compression reading but does not restore it
Can u do a video on how to adjust the speed on a craftsman brand engine in particular the one used on the craftsman m270 lawnmower
great video thanks! I clicked on your ads!!
What would you do to make it run lower rpm. Mine runs wide open when started.
Great video dony, I might add that shortening the spring can also solve a problem if your engine is surging up and down.
Is it bad that my spring was so weak that I had cut 6 loops out of the spring to get it to run at a decent speed?
Do u take the blade off or leave it on ?? The grass ain't moving 😂
it's not recommended because the oil dipper is different on a vertical engine and the carb would have to mounted horizontally
Hey I have a question I have a Toro wheel horse. 8-25 The problem that I'm having this. The unit will idle. But it won't give up RPMs to move the ride on mower . I have all them linkage arms hooked up to where they're supposed to.. any help would be appreciated
Thank you so much for sharing this video! My lawn mower was working OK and then after I went down the hill with it, the rpms slowed down significantly. I found out the problem was with the spring, which had fallen out of the hole. I cut a small section of the spring to help restore it to its original power and now it's working like new.
Father tuned lawn mower to 3800 RPM
Thank u cause i was catching hell
Hey. Do you know why machine like this will start RUN for 5 to 8 mins STALL out. I prime pull start it runs. then stalls stalls stalls. blah blah blah
high speed steel or titanium coated should do, don't spin the drill too fast
So if i cut it in half i can blow up my lawn mower intersecting
Remove the governor springs and air vane. Install a throttle directly to the carb. You can manually adjust your own idle. You can max throttle it and let it redline. Briggs and strattons are way tougher than Tecumsehs!!
i have a newer murray lawn mower that is having problems stay running and i am thinking that the throttle is shot would it be best to replace the throttle cable
Hi i have murray 4.75
I change carburator to a new one, change sparkplug, change the spring, change air filter, change gasket now when i start it the RPM goes really high what can i do to adjust it.
Sometimes the simple fixes are the best fixes! You made it look so easy....but that what professional do!!
Thanks for the time and effort you put into your many informative videos.

Good video but it would be nice to know what the engine rpm spec is supposed to be and shoot for that. I don't think listening for what sounds right doesn't necessarily get it right and like you mention over reving the engine is not good. I bought and inexpensive hour/rpm counter for my B&S but I am not sure what it should run at - guessing around 3000-3200. Thanks for posting.
Between 3200-3600 after a while u can tell by sound
donyboy73 - I found a much better way to do this and probably the way a repair shop woukd do it. You basically loosen the cable housing clamp for the throttle control and adjust it there. It’s very close to the linkages you show and very simple. I was showing 2700 RPMs and I loosened the cable clamp moved the spring like cable housing the throttle cable about a quarter of an inch which pulls the linkage you point out farther allowing the throttle to increase. That small adjustment got me up to 3000 RPM’s. Thanks for the reply
hey idk if you check these but i have an engine exactly like that and it keeps surging at higher rpms, and i have a new spark plug, cleaned air filter, and i cleaned the carb. what could be the problem?
Hello, Aah it´s notperfect. At first you have to adjust the range of the Lever itself, so that the whole way does Change the spring Tension. Then, in the second step you have to adjust the spring Tension for the max throttle Position of the Lever by simple bend the metalt this Point where the spring is connected, not more.
hello, i have a craftsman rider mower with a (ic gold 14.5 briggs and stratton ) and it will run if i put gas into the intake but then dies, i have cleaned the carburetor once already but it still wont work. I believe it has something to do with the solenoid on the bottom of the float bowel but i may be wrong. do you have any ideas about what to try next? and also if it turns out its shot then where can i find the carburetor parts or rebuild kits for sale cheap?
thanks a lot ,
p.s...your videos are great keep em coming !!
hey man im just wondering i have the same mower i did a small repair on but the spring is all mangled from the owner not taking care if it. would you have any videos of where the springs hook up underneath the cover? & where could i get a new spring i tried looking on the makers site but they only go by part number and theres no number on the spring. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.
THANKS !🇨🇦

My revs to high with two new springs in place still any suggestions anyone.
Lawrence MacDonald Stretch the spring a little
i always look forward to watching donyboys videos !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a Briggs gold series 6.25 and it revs very high and I can't figure out how to idle it down. Can anyone help?
Some people just tune their governors by ear... on most engines the tone and pitch of it should sound like between the keys of "G" and "A."
there should be an oil plug under the engine to dump it out
What’s the other smaller spring for? Need adjusting as well?
My quattro 4 does not do anything when I move the leaver. I noticed on your video that when you start the engine the governer moves back and puts more tension on the spring semester. Mine just sits the and there is no movement. Could the be something broken on the other side of the governer
Don, I have a new Snapper Ninja muncher with a Briggs 850 engine. It is a constant velocity system that runs at 3,450 RPMS. I would like to convert it to a manual throttle control. Is that possible? It has the bolt to hold the throttle control on the handle bar. The push mower version and the commercial version have a throttle control but not the 7800981 version. I even have the location on the plastic tray on the handle bar to put the throttle control. It appears to be an easy conversion at first blush. What do you think? The reason I want to convert it is because if I engage the transmission I better have my running shoes on.
Had the same issue. An easier and quicker way it to simply bend the bracket giving the spring more preload.
I think I must have run into something which bent it in the first place.
can you make a video of it running so i can see?
What is the recommended high rpm speed spec for one of these engines??
I have a classic 300 series in at the moment. I put it at around 3050-3100 rpm.
It cut descent but I feel it could still go a bit higher, whats a good max for one of those? Its on a 20 inch push mower so its only job it cut.
Fearless I have just started researching this. Other than listening or looking at grass cutting performance. How do you know the safe RPM level? I don’t want to burn out the engine.
I truly agree concise and to the point. Thank you very much. Wade Out
What is the model number of the lawn mower
Thank you. My engine was running too nmast. I adjusted the plate as you showed and is now runnin ine.
100 likes says everything. Love your mower vids.!
simple demo, thanks.
I bought one of those cheap mowers a Lowes and used it for probably eight years and then bought a Toro self propelled mower. I took the Yardman to the farm and used it another four or five years. I changed the oil regularly and replaced the air filter when needed. I did the speed adjustment here after watching this video. I installed a new blade and primer build and ended up selling the mower for $30 and it was still in great running condition.
Hi. The big spring that the 2 governor spring connects to, what is that one called?
you may need to adjust the governor on the engine
Thanks for the videos. I know engine rebuilds, everything but the governor. I know how it works. Just wasn't sure how to how to adjust it correctly. I know to high will overheat the engine, just like when the head is full of grass and mud.
Hey dony, i have a husquvarna mower in the shop with a honda gcv160 engine. it runs, but it runs really really fast. ive replaced both throttle springs with brand new OEM parts. linkage is not binding. what could be causing this?
Hey,donyboy73 is it possable to put a push mower engine on a ride on? im thinking of buying a ride on without a engine, the two problems i can think of is how to control the throttle and how i would get the key to work, id turn the key to on then pull, any ideas? i know slight electrical. and for the throttle would i hook the "wire" to the spot the spring is on the govener in thos vid? or do i hook it somewhere else, ANY info is fully accepted and a video would be VERY helpful
Nice, donyboy, as usual. I try to catch all your videos.
I know this is an old video, but I have an old mower. It's a 123K02-0479-E1 engine manufactured in 2005 which has a thermostatic autochoke. There's no throttle, nor can I see any lean/rich adjustment screws. Yet it's clearly not running up to speed even though the air and gas filters are new. Smooth but just tired sounding. Would this be a similar hack?
might be, i would have to see it
What's the bit at the end about the tab and governor? Where did that come from as it wasn't mentioned in the beginning
what does the little plastic arm do that is attached to the small spring. not the throttle body - I get that.
I believe thats a flap that works with wind from the engine turning and it keeps the engine running at a certain speed, i could be wrong on that.
i did something similar to my old 3.5hp b&s as it was on the edge of its limit to cut the grass, just a tiny bend to make the spring loop smaller, works ok :-)
Smashing vid :-)
What if it revs too which my engine is a Briggs 7.24 the throttle is connected to the governor shaft
hi donyboy73 i have a honda hr 194 ive done every thing to get it running but it is very hard to start and the oil is getting to the spark pluk wich i intend to sort out next but the hi rev is like a low rev and idle is switching the mower off the throttel cable has been replaced the other thing is it clacks when you start it ive cleand the carb and tryed every thing but it still dosent rev high enough and dosent start properly so if you can help me or anyone els on here
I have a similar mower but when it's on pavement it runs fine. But when you start cutting grass it will sound like it's hunting for air.
check the air filter - clean or replace as needed. thicker, taller grass will slow most low powered motors like this one, so cut regularly. adjust deck height. use good new gas. clean the carburetor - could be a gummed up jet. Check the spark plug and clean or replace, check the gap. lastly, at the end of the season run the gas out!
@@theoriginalchefboyoboy6025 I think I found the problem. I replaced the gas tank and carburetor. It was all together on Amazon. Now I'm trying to figure out why it's not sucking up fuel in the primer bulb. Unless I have to get it going with starting fluid then prime
@@theultimatespaceghost6065 I went to prime mine today and I knew the gas tank was getting close to empty, but to me that shouldn't make a difference. It wouldn't prime - the button was just all squishy. So I thought, what the hell, I'll just top up the gas and it primed normally, started first time, so there might be some weird thing going on that the gas needs to be at a certain level.
@@theoriginalchefboyoboy6025 I got it figured out. I put the old carburetor back on and it primes as it should
hey Donyboy,
sometimes I think I am certifiably luny..I am hooked on your youtube videos; watching them till 2 or 3AM on a regular basis. You do a great job and are very articulate and knowledgeable as well. In any case I take serious note of your cautions about not setting engines to rev too high. What is the best source for determining factory recommended hi rev levels? Any single doc for this?
thanks lol, usually get info from a manual, however most engines require same rpm setting
hi donyboy73 i assked you about my honda hr 194 on my other account but it wont let me on so ive posted it on my other one named it (honda mower problem reply donyboy73)so if you can help tht would be good ive only just started restoring mowers wiv help frm ur vids but this one i cant get running properly if i lived in canada i would bring it down but im in uk so would appreciate help
