- In this video, we do a few switching jobs in Derail Valley with a modded and skinned steam locomotive! Special thanks to Zeibach for making most of the mods used, and particularly for the sound mod which I had fun playing with this go around.
Next time we're going to make a 2000+ ton hazmat train. What could go wrong?

After the cold winter, it sprouted in spring.
Tender are harvested in this way.
you made me laugh WAY too hard at this
@@Hyce777 Agreed.
"Sorry, boss, we didn't get around to patching that throttle, next shift will have to take care of that."
Later...
"Wadda mean it in the turntable pit?! We don't even have a turntable!"
@2:00 That, my friends, is modern art.
@4:15 Okay, minVolumePosition and maxVolumePosition go on the ToDo list.
@15:20 In my defense, I made the HUD mod for debugging the other mods during development, where I needed omniscience. ;)
@18:48 There's a setting for the springs in ZCouplers. Unfortunately Unity doesn't give me a whole lot of flexibility to model proper draft gear behavior.
@24:40 The job IDs on the HUD tell you if you're properly positioned. Yellow = some of the cars are on the track, green = all of the cars in the job are on the track.
@29:50 The modeled control valves are the Type K "quick-action" model. When the first valve tips into emergency, it also vents the pipe to trip the next car, and so on up the line.
@32:50 I'm glad you're getting so much entertainment value out of the detailed torque simulation. :)
@36:15 The train wasn't fully stopped yet, which is why you couldn't load.
@37:40 And again. :D
@42:50 I'll look into add a setting for the angle cock vent rate.
Cheers again Zeibach :) can't wait for the few changes. HUD creation makes sense, and Unity... yeah, we get that. Lol. I've never run with quick-action K's - that makes a lot more sense now! Job ID behavior on the HUD is very cool. And yes, I enjoy the hell out of the torque sim. I edited a bit of it out, I accidentally tried to unload instead of load, lol.
I've seen some binnings before but that, err, 'tender moment' at the beginning was something truly special! Also - 'came to the oil well for spicy jobs.' When Hyce says spicy in reference to his cargo - I'm immediately taking cover!
I love how much fun you’re having with this game! When you strip away all the drama associated with Class 1 railroading, drilling cars is actually pretty fun. 2000t to the port is gonna be interesting, might need to pick up a helper at the steel mill 😜
My favourite run is from the harbour over pass to the military base, or down to the food factory. Had 1300+ tons on the hook, and was down to 19kph at one point.
Gotta slogging it away
"I'm going to need you to pee in this cup, sir. That's not how we store our locos properly."
Also I don't want Big Boy I want DM&IR Yellowstone.
I realized something yesterday mr Hyce, I’ve seen your #491 in a string of videos a few years ago by a Mr Jeff Berrier. I rewatched his videos of 491 actually working after watching your 10 levels videos and man, that was icing on the cake. It made such great sense with the visuals. I bet blowing down on a good cold day is a sight to see with that much steam. Anyways, have a great day man! Love the videos
The blowdown does carry quite far when it's cold out, that's for sure. And yes, Jeff's videos are a good look at the engine overall as well.
I couldn’t grasp his description. It was a lot to digest in a short amount of time. You helped me understand the theory then seeing it in action was great
29:29 It is really interesting to see how good the brake is modelled. The cars detect a massive decrease in air pressure, so they open their emergency valves, which causes all other trains to also see the rapid decrease.
Yeah, Zeibach noted to me that he modelled a special fast-acting K valve that I had never worked with, which makes sense as to why this works like it does.
Now that's a loco appearance that looks a little more natural!
I love how the coal in the tender is just clinging to the metal with all of it's strength, that is interesting
Well that was an interesting spawn in but there was something about the steam engine with the high headlight and graphite smoke box that seemed familiar. It needs a Burlington herald on the tender because it's reminiscent of a Burlington O5 IIRC. The D6 looks great but you were right the first time. Get rid of the UP graffiti
I would -love- for an O5 to play with in any sim. I've sat and stared at 5629 with dreams in my head for hours... Lol
44:00 that Rio do be looking kinda Grande
I really like the gray smokebox. Gives contrast.
I think the song, "Highballing Through The Yard" might be my favorite. Very spunky.
Union Pacific "We Will Derail"
I'm thankful that the whistle works the way it does, it is a lot of fun to watch
Thoroughly enjoying your derail valley and railroads online content, particularly all your railroad stories. Always a great watch!
Meet hyce’s personal advisor: Whistle
16:30 Buffers are really unforgiving in this game. Even the slightest impact gives a great deal of damage. You were lucky
I laughed way to hard at your comment about US mass units. I remember my freshman year statics prof who was turkish trying to explain to us what a slug was and all of us were so confused lol
Me: Oh boy, Carl was on time with the notification.
Within seconds of clicking: Well, time to p n a cup.
Also me: checks the clock. Crud, time to go to work. Maybe I can finish the video when I go on break.
new whistle best whistle.
UP would sometimes paint the roofs grey but it was only on Engines where they wouldn't bother upgrading the roof to have a vent. it wasn't a common color scheme.
Huh, neat.
@@Hyce777 The reason was so that the light color gray would refract the light off the roof so it would get cooler in the cab when they cracked the forward windows and doors.
Having seen a lot of Union Pacific steam locomotives, the 5 chime is pretty accurate.
Like the original Dumbo movie when Casey Jr gets moving he can't move forwardTrain jerks back then go back forwards and he gets moving
I hope to see a comic called Mark and the Whistle soon haha
Yeah, it's just wastefull to do multiple shunt jobs at once, there's no way you'll get any of the bonuses and it'll probably take you longer over all as well. Get the loadings done to empty the sidings, then the unloadings to clear the inbound lanes before you leave.
lovin the background music, keep it up!!
Can't wait for the next episode lol. The Steam/Diesel combo will be interesting.
90 psi might be good for train brakes, and could make those brake lines flail madly, but I deal with 240 psi of air on a daily basis. Still twice what you’d find in a mechanic shop. Plus 170 ft of vacuum hoses that are 8 inches wide.
Yee haw. Pray tell what do you do that deals with that? Ship something?
@@Hyce777 I do duct cleaning. If you have a forced air hvac system in your home, its ductwork should be cleaned every 2-3 years.
@@imaginekarma8582 huh, neat. Makes sense. And, good to know. I do have forced heat
You can also see the destination of your cars in your heads up display which was updated recently with unit conversion. :)
Clang has been pleased by your recent sacrifices, He had bestowed a gift upon your tender.
Let us hope He will forgive you for forsaking His gift as you were ... uninformed at the time ...
I love how you started off a Derail Valley episode with a derailm... incorrectly parked train 🙃
A question about RO!, why do you need an alternate sound loop for high speeds? Not like I drive trains, but I cant imagine that trains actually sound so different at high speeds; just the chuffing being really quick along with maybe some metal rattling as the rods dance around the wheels
It gets very odd and staccato sounding if you still have individual valve events at high speed. It's much more seamless to use a loop. If you had a suite of a zillion steam chuffs maybe you could do it, but that's unlikely.
I'm too English to be shown a white smokebox, it just looks un-natural for me. but who am I to say was natural on a locomotive.
Dark grey is what I really want. This is kind of close... lol
I see you are putting a tunnel in railroads online, how much money for the tunnel for the railroads online?
If the ES&D Railroad was an actual railroad this is what it would be
a little Hyce Parking going on???
Rule #1 of Derail Valley = Save Game before blowing up the yard!
Hey Hyce could we perhaps get the polar express whistle as an April fools update for RRO whenever swapping whistles becomes a thing? 😂
If I can get a copyright free version of it sure :P
actually i just noticed the 2-8-2 in game vaguely looks like the 2-8-2 B&O had
hyce put all cars on a1l or the loading track then turn in paper work to start clock then do the shunting job or just leave them a1 a2 a3 then pick them up in order after you do the paper work shortens time being side by side
Kaboom? Yes Rico, kaboom
Pterodactyl moment 2:00
Hyce you should do a video on will a penny derail a train
lol... no. hahah
the possessed coal car.
Today often there is a buffer car between hazmat cars and the engines. Was something like that done with cabooses back in the day?
Perhaps? I am not sure when that became a law. I haven't heard of it in my time with historical railroading, but I wouldn't be surprised if the thought came around in the '50's or later.
@@Hyce777 In Britain, there was a rule (not sure if it was a law that applied to everybody but it was certainly true on the Great Western) that when running loaded tank wagons by steam, a spacer (usually an empty coal wagon) had to be placed immediately behind the engine. They did, however, not think to apply this rule to a train load of bombs in WW2, which caught fire and one wagon was completely destroyed, along with a good portion of the station, and the engine crew!
@@ajaxengineco yowza!
How do I change the whistle for zsound
And why is mass and speed important in shunting HAZMAT cars? well if you miscalculate and bump too fast and hard, the entire yard will be turned into one EXPENSIVE giant weenie and marshmallow roast!! LOL
hype all you had to do is respawn else where
I didn't know you could load multiple jobs at once, though I've never tried.
First time for me too!
If you go into the settings you can enable the ability to clear and spawn cars.
I've had that glitch happen to me on a non-mission car, and the game doesn't believe it's derailed so I enabled the spawner, went into the radio and deleted it.
I've tested it on engines too. You can despawn them and respawn them if they glitch for $0
I haven't tested it with mission cars, but I wouldn't recommend it. I doubt you cpd respawn thr car with the proper numbers. If you despawn a car you need to complete mission you'll be stuck.
good to know. I did need the tender, so... lol
@@Hyce777 Yes but the tender isn't PART of the mission, so if you have to despawn it because it's glitched and turn respawn it it is safe to do so.
This is true with the locos too.
Despawning mission related cars (box, tank, flatbed, etc) will cause mission failure.
And I have actually JUST checked, if you click CLEAR on a car with a mission attached to it, you do get a warning that you will discard the mission if you continue.
How you put the tender in the ground is beyond me but cool vid
I literally just fast traveled with my locomotive and that's how it ended up. Lol.
@@Hyce777 well now you know what not to do with fast travel
How often do you service your steam engine?
Usually after every road job.
Woo! More derail valley
*scratches his head* why did you submit all those jobs without having the cars all hooked up in one long train and ready to go?
switching job with the cars all over the place :P didn't care for the bonus anyway.
@@Hyce777 fair enough! still a good video =)
Ok now that is hilarious
Why did you change the whistle hice
Because I love my D&RGW 5 chime :)
@@Hyce777 ok keep the videos coming
Very gud.
0:00 d&rgw be like
If this is even has 10 levels could you do a 10 levels of distributed power.
I don't think I know enough to do 10 levels of DP. Haha
new whistle for RO?
Yes, it will be in RO at some point.
So are you lot gonna add diesel locomotives into railroads online
probably, still to come on that. Badger us about it after you see a freight car tech tree.
@@Hyce777 and is there any new narrow gauge steam locomotives gonna be put in the game yet if so is it gonna be any of the following 1. Tank locomotive 2. Tender locomotive 3. Articulated locomotive
@@williamsexton970 You, you do know Hyce made youtube videos explaining various rrol tech trees. One being all the new steamers they plan to work on overtime
@@bdlooney1037 sorry by they have we met before
@@williamsexton970I don't think so?
Train brakes confuse the fuck out of me. Exactly how is it that truck air brakes have a safer configuration and it has never been brought to the railroad? When you apply the auto brake in a train, it reduces the pressure in the brake pipe, which pulls air out of a reservoir on each car to apply the brakes. What?!? In a truck, the brakes are kept in full locked position by a massive spring, and charging their air releases the brakes. It works similarly, in that a brake application is a reduction of pressure, but the SPRING applies the brakes, not another fallible brake reservoir. If you don't have charge in your air tanks, you can't move. No runaway trucks due to low air pressure that way. The only downside is that if you start to run low on reservoir pressure, the spring applying the brake will start to fade the brake, so, like in a train, you NEED to stop and charge, just for different reasons.
If someone can explain to me why Westinghouse is better, please do. And "we've used it forever" or "it's cheap" aren't safety reasons. Train brakes should have been updates DECADES ago
Let’s go!!! Pee in a cup!
No cups peed in in this episode... unless the teleport glitch counts, lol!
Tsw2?
Eventually, yes!
I cant wait!
How do you owe so much money 😅
Leveling the oil well several times because it was funny
@@Hyce777 lol, that makes sense. I saw 1 of those levellings 😅
