    For all of you that are really into this stuff. I encourage you to go to your local steam thresher show and learn how to get an actual steamer license and volunteer to run the steam engines to keep history alive. I volunteer on the tractor side of things at a couple shows. And the sad thing is the generation that knows how to run them is dying off and the new generation isn't learning how to run this stuff. It all seems straightforward but everything has little quirks depending on manufacturer. Or just the type and style. And that's the kind of stuff you need to know and learn when you want to run this kind of stuff. Don't get me wrong these games are awesome and very realistic. However nothing beats getting behind the throttle of an old steam engine with a six bottom plow and just feeling that power

    Speaking of Tennessee Pass, I was born in Salida, CO right next to the old yard there and very close to what's left of Monarch Pass. I spoke to my Uncle Stan who is a local historian for the area, and he said they keep the tracks clear and in "operable" condition. the reason is, it's the only way they would ever be able to evacuate the area in the event they had to do so. when it snows, Highway 50 is literally just shut down because there's just no plowing it. So that's why the tracks, signals and everything are still there and in decent shape. It leaves plenty of opportunities for potential operators though, as they're not going anywhere. That much is certain.

    One time I did an almost 2k ton haul out of the harbor with 2 steamers, I must say that was the most stressful run I ever did, luckily both were on the head end so I could have some amount of time to stick my head out the window to see what was happening but other than that it was full blower, full damper all the way out at a solid 20 kmh, I think I'll go into the DV discord and scroll way up to find the screenshot I took but it felt a lot like what you did here
    my advice for doing coal drags in DV: get the biggest run up you can, use the blower to get your fire temp up while your at a stand-still, then roll the cut-off back a notch for ever 10 kmh you accelerate (once you hit 40 you can usually place the cut-off at about 1/4 of a notch, your pressure will drop like a sack of rocks but you can usually get up to over 60 with 800 tons before you're off the bridge) and then use sand to keep traction, then start notching forward as your speed decreases, but don't even think about using full forward on the hill then let your temp drop once you crest the grade and it's mostly braking from then on

    I've Min Max'd this at 1050T with one Steam loco, but it is right on the limit, like max fire temp, full reg and reverser all the way forward at the top of the hill, moving at about 20-25. Like just made it in every aspect.
    Edit: peaked at 45 before the steep grade.

  • @neonsamurai1348

    There is a mod available for the steam engine that fixes a number of issues with it, Realistic Steamer Overhaul on nexus. You can also customize the efficiency of the coal, and other things like starting pressure so you don't have to wait half an hour+ for the boiler to come up to pressure. Hopefully the upcoming sim overhaul will fix the issues and give the steam engines their proper tractive effort (steam vs diesel is backwards, steam power is less efficient but with generally greater tractive effort, diesel is lower maintenance and much greater energy efficiency).
    The current version of the steam is very wrong indeed, the tractive power is way off for an engine of that size, the reverser is pretty much broken, as you use the same amount of steam regardless of the setting. Even the damper doesn't work. I dearly wish they would move the fire door handle to the other side of the loco too as it covers over the main brake when open.
    I also often use the remote to control a diesel on the rear to help with braking, give some slack, and give an extra push when needed.

Second the small reductions for the automatic watching your grades staying out of power when it’s not needed and doing reductions in 8-10lbs or one click in game few seconds to set no gauge at rear to watch but give time for length then check speed and adjust accordingly

    "A steam engine can run a train it can't start, but a Diesel can start a train it has no business of running"
    Is that due to the smaller wheels, or the instantaneous torque of the electric motors?

      That is the old story!
      For diesel: you get all kinds of torque and power at low speed, but you can't keep that up at higher speeds. For steam: the engine is literally directly coupled to the wheels - 1:1 gearing - in order to actually utilize the force of both cylinders you have to be going at a decent speed, else you can get "centered up" where only one cylinder is providing power.

    Question for railroads online are there plans to be able to make the foundation banked for corners? Or is banked turns not realistic for narrow Guage or for the time period?

      Banked isn't really prototypical for the narrow gauge in this time.

    I may be wrong, but i think the knob for the blower is supposed to be connected as a control valve for steam to go to a blower to control the blower and not regulating the actual air going through it. basically like the control knob for the heater fan in a car. it controls the fan not the airflow.

    • @Hyce777
      @Hyce777  2 года назад

      The blower is literally just a valve that takes steam at boiler pressure and sends it out a pipe that then exhausts out the stack, causing a draft. There is no fan. Some blowers are fancy and called "ring blowers" that even out the flow, but, most I've run into just had a pipe that just ends pointing up the stack to one side.

    • @Bendigo1
      @Bendigo1 2 года назад

      @@Hyce777 I meant in the game, not IRL. The way the pipes are set up it looks like they modeled it as a control valve for a blower motor. But like i said i may be wrong.
