There are a bunch of settings to change what the HUD shows. You can trim down to show as little as you want. Imperial units are something I'm been looking into, but not available yet. The key number to watch fire-wise is "Oxygen Availability", which you want to keep at 100% for a clean burn. "Oxygen Supply" is how much air you're getting in the fire, but doesn't tell you if it's too much or not enough.
Down at the bottom of the HUD you can see the brake information for your entire train. By default the HUD shows all the cars of a job together on one line, but you can change that to show each individual car, so you don't have to teleport around. The "Derail" number is a percentage. At 100% or thereabouts it'll pop off the rails, but it's probabilistic so there are no guarantees. It might keep holding to 105%, or conversely you'll hit an irregularity in the rail and derail at 95%.
When the chuffing stops at low cutoff, the steam is condensing in the cylinders due to not enough superheat (depends on the fire temp), so when the exhaust valves open there's basically no pressure left.
I was told somewhere else that the brakes on a car would take ~10-15 seconds to release, but that's also something that's easy to change.

Cheers again! Glad for the HUD info. I think I'll turn off the MPH mod for now until I can get one consistent set of freedom units :P I don't mind metric too much. Just programmed to say "miles an hour..." too much Top Gear. :P
Interesting on the chuffing stopping... if you're exhausting something, it would still make a sound. If you're truly completely condensing, you're working water, which makes a hideous sound otherwise. The blast nozzle is small enough that you should still get a "chuff" unless something in the gear is preventing admission, like I was talking about.
The 10-15 seconds to release sounds about right, especially depending on the train, but I think that's moreso losing all the force rather than the sound. The sound you hear is a really quick "pssssh" as demonstrated, and then it still takes a bit for the cylinder to work back to starting position and get all the linkage moving after it's finished. It's likely perfectly fine, and perhaps even desired to have it the way you've set with the sound existing the whole time until recharge; just a neat little difference I noticed.
Again, cheers for the brilliant work. :)

With the steamer overhaul, I usually like to keep around 150 to 200 kg of coal in the firebox. If you really need a lot of pressure though, you can just shove as much coal as you need in to get the fire temp up, as long as you are working hard enough to get a good draft from the cylinders, as they will be able to keep more coal at 100% oxygen than the blower can. Also, the unmarked nob on the right of the hydrostatic-lubricator-looking-thing is the stoker engine, which you can adjust (approximately) to match your coal consumption rate, if you are trying to keep a certain amount in the firebox.

Your talk about switchspeeds made me curious. In Germany the speed on standard swiches is 60 km/h. There are swiches wiht lower speeds but tere is advice agains using them because of maintanance. Since we have dedicated highspeed rail in Germany there are switches with movable frogs that ccan be traversed with 280 km/h on the sraight leg and up to 200 km/h on the diverging leg. The largest ones result in a length of about 170 meters.

    • @Hyce777
      @Hyce777  2 года назад +4

Oh yes, in high speed rail applications that is certainly true. Over here in the States, not so much. We have some that are good for mainline track speed (79 MPH, a touch over 100 KPH), but most are not. Particularly, I was commenting on the diverging angle of the switches as-modeled in game - pretty sharp for the speeds listed.

Steam engine skins do work. I have skinned the engine and the tender. It could be the skin you are trying to use doesn't work, or it's not installed correctly.
For the steam engine you want to place the skin folder in:
    Mods/SkinManagerMod/Skins/loco_steam_H
Remember to unzip it and place the entire folder (not just the files) into the location.
I can't say with the skin you have, but some skins I have seen require you to manually place the folder while others already have the full directory tree in the zip.
    Good luck!

    • @Hyce777
      @Hyce777  2 года назад

So far as I can tell, they changed the mapping on the steam engine after the skin I was using is made. That's why you can see the tender trucks change (i.e. skin installed right and mapped right just on the trucks), but not the body. I'll be looking for more modern ones to try.

5:05 look at the Heat Yeild when you added that scoop of coal
    .
it went from 1200..... and then RAPIDLY rose to 2100
yet the Evaporation rate didnt really change
    .
idk.... if you have more heat on the same amount of water..... its Evaporation / steam generation rate should also increase
especially when going from 1200 to ALMOST DOUBLE at 2100 Kilowatts of heat..................
    .
    .
    .
still... i do like the fact they have "boiler steam mass"
which SHOULD mean you have "more steam" when running lower on water
    .
like if the pistons are using 100KG/H....... and at full water.... you only have 100KG of steam space
in 1 hour, you will be out of steam (think like your fire is out)
    .
but if you are still using 100 KG/H of steam...... but you are JUST!! above the crown sheet..... so you have 500KG of steam space
then you can run for 5 hours on what steam you have left
    .
    .
and ya.... you would run out of steam in about 5 mins VS 5 hours on a real loco
but at least they have modeled the extra "capacity" you get from running with a low water level
    .
i wonder if evap rate also goes up with a lower water level
    .
    .
    .
people back in the day used to run their engines VERY low on water..... as it increased steam generation rates (and also "steam capacity")
yet once they topped the hill, and started down..... all the water would slosh forward.... uncover crown sheet.... and KABOOM!!!

The steam is coming from a small pipe/tube that seems to be connected to the cylinder valves, though I'm not entirely certain what its purpose would be.
Funnily enough though, the FEF type locomotives of the Union Pacific railroad seemed to have the same thing installed, though obviously they never produced the steam clouds you get in the game. Blower on if you need pressure while stationary; damper should almost always be open. I recommend you add coal until the oxygen availability drops a touch below 100% (use the HUD mod); otherwise look at the stack. Light hazy color is OK, dark black is too much. :)

its weird the way we use units of measurements especially when you've grown up as gamer and you learnt to drive cars in MPH (I live in England), you then learnt how to fly aircraft in KM/H cos you grow up flying WW2 fighters from Germany and Russia, I use KG for weighing objects due to it being easy to visualize cos 1KG bag of sugar is good way for me to understand how that would look and feel and yet i measure my body weight in some archaic unit known here in england know as stones, which my online friends from other countries laugh at me for and find it peculiar and make jokes how i have enough body weight in that case to build a castle which i find friggin hilarious.
he's a thought, I thought that KM/H was best, due to it being a small unit of measurement, so when in Sims i would switch to flying a Spitfire which uses MPH i thought well thats not as good as KMH but i think i've worked out the reason, due to KMH being a small unit of measurement and the nature of instrument scanning, in KM/H you would not see / notice as easily the speed needle moving as there are more increments on it and therefore the need moves less for each increment, where as MPH is larger unit of measurement so that needle moves faster its easier to notice small changes that grab your eye.

Did your untelevised operational issues smell like Kenosha, perchance? I'm also curious why quarter slipping is "so cute"? I'm coming at this from a position of total ignorance of actual steam operations - I've learned more from you on the subject than from anyone else.
As to railroad grade crossing whistles and city residents hating it? I probably wouldn't mind it with steam (I like steam), but diesels with their horns can go to hell. My house was all of 100 feet from the single main for the Allegheny Valley RR and about 200-300 from two grade crossings. Not only were the grade crossing whistles loud, but the locos themselves were deafening, especially hauling slate and oil loads that could be pretty close to tonnage, and oh how I hated it. To go full Karen: "Allegheny Valley, I demand to speak to your manager! Pay for triple glazing when residential building frontage as old as the track alignment is that close to what used to be an old yard until you tore it up, because you were damaging my hearing!"

They were mostly disappointing untelevised issues, lol. I did blow up another oil train but didn't feel right with moving forward on the episode because it felt a little phoned in and didn't treat the mods right.
