    5:18 You´re right! Usually in german german locomotives:
    The round type of heat exchanger is a "Oberflächen-Vorwärmer" (surface pre-heater), where the cold water flows through pipes surrounded by used steam. The square type, seen on "Reko" (Rebuild) locomotives (In East Germany from 1960 onward) mixes the used steam with the cold water. It´s called "Misch-Vorwärmer" (Mixing pre-heater).
    It´s the easiest way to tell apart a "Altbau" (older build, which means pre-1945) locomotive from a "Reko" (Rebuild) locomotive.

  • @JonatanGronoset
    @JonatanGronoset 2 года назад +19

    To Greg, if you see this the gauge glass as modelled is the protective shield around the glass tube that contains the actual water. The shield should not contain any water, its only job is to protect the tube from being damaged and protect the crew from the steam and water should the glass tube break. Otherwise the cab is nicely done. The valve gear is excellent.

    • @TheMofRider2
      @TheMofRider2 Год назад +1

      And also, maybe even more important - you swapped directions of the throttle. In real, when the lever is at full right the throttle is completely closed (in German zu - Z)*, and the more left it goes, the more you open it (O). I'm used to that the brakes in DV work opposite to their real life origins, but a mirrored throttle is kinda new to me (or I wasn't attentive enough).
      *I'm referring to the letters, which can be found on most valves/cranks in a german steam loco cab and on the throttle indicator, f.e. in 20:30

    If you ever visit Germany, the largest narrow guage Steamlocomotive network in Germany is the HSB "Harzer Schmalspurbahn" (Harz Mountainrange narrow guage railroad).
    They are very special in many ways:
    - 140km (87mi) of Steam powered meter gauge railway. With extentions considered
    - A tunnel
    - A turnig loop (like on streetcars)
    - A short street running section.
    - A station at a college campus, so you can commute to university by steam locomotive.
    - a siding where you have to back out, so only a single switch.
    (legally the siding it's a station but no person or cargo is allowed to enter or alight).
    - A, section where also actual streetcars operate (by using a secondary diesel engine)
    - if you enjoy hiking it also a great hiking region within a national park.
    Also the network is not entirely tailored to tourism they also provide a rudimentary commuter/regional rail service but obviously the majority of revenue comes only from the line up to the mountain peak for those who are to lazy to hike up just two to three hours.
    You would really enjoy it there.

      It has mostly stayed in service throughout, the exeption being the route up the Brocken mountain (which was reserved for military purposes, then closed down for a while before reactivated). Most of their rolling stock is also original from this network and has never seen retirement, and they have taken in some locomotives from former railways since (the highlight being a 0-4-4-0 Mallet tank engine from the 1800s which also sees nearly daily service).

(Save for the 2-8-0 Connie, which was all the way back in 2013) But For everything else it is there. It's actually the thing that takes the longest to animate for him I believe. a short note about the cab of the engine: Class 89 and 86 were indeed closely related. In general the engines designed in DRG period (1921 - 1940) really used as many common parts as possible, servicinge the engines was just way easier if you could take the engine apart and just rebuild it with already serviced parts. The prussians did that already to a great extend before WWI - just look at their classes P8, G10 and T16 as example, they share almost everything.
    The cab being nearly identical also goes back to that standardization effort.
    The Class 86 is actually considered to be a medium engine. The T20/Class 95 or the Class 94 (bavarian GT 4x4) are the heavyweights of german tank engines.
    BTW: Germany did not use any US-Parts back then in any railway application - the railway was a national agency, not a private company since it was considered critical infrastructure.

    Everything on german locomotives was german! Including the dynamo. ;) I think the dynamos were built by AEG (Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft) but can't verify, pics that show builders plates are hard to come by.
    The Kunze-Knorr system was the german counterpart to the Westinghouse brake. The air pump on the model is the Nielebock-Knorr doppelverbundluftpumpe, or double/cross compound.
    As mentioned elsewhere the 86 was part of the einhetslok standardization program that started in the 1920s, every loco is built from a set of standardized parts which is why german steamers look the same. The gains in cost and servicability was the drive force behind this radical move as a common part from an 86 could be replaced with a common part from an 01.
    You could say the DB/DRG was the Pennsy of europe. ;)
    A playlist with lots of german/european locos for you to study, it shows many great contrasts between american and european locomotive building and operation practices:

    The reason a lot of british (and so some extent european) locos have tiny single chimes is because they operated in highly populated areas at all hours of the day and in high frequency, I think there were some old LSWR commuter tank engines that had larger whistles that had to be replaced due to noise complaints. I think it was M7's?

    • @ajaxengineco
      @ajaxengineco 2 года назад

      Either the M7s or the O2s got Caledonian-style hooters attached which were so disruptive as to frighten horses. The Great Western Railway gave it's engines a pair of whistles, one of which was used to alert the guard a brake application was necessary. When both whistles are blown simultaneously, a rather pleasing chime note is issued - although I suspect this is a happy result of the practice as opposed to being by design.

      Well you learn something new every day

    • @marktownend8065
      @marktownend8065 2 года назад

      Many post WW2 BR standard loco tenders in UK had a narrow coal compartment with windshields at the cab end for working safely and comfortably 'backwards'. Some earlier designs, and most built for the war effort (including the US manufactured S160s), also had this feature for maximum flexibility. They tended to be smaller machines up to class 4MT, used on secondary lines and branches. Larger freight and express passenger locos on the main lines particulalry continued with their bigger full height full width tenders for maximum range and were severely speed limited when running reverse due to poor visibility, so had to be turned.

    • @greggorytame6672

      Generally because when it comes to animation you're not actually dealing with like... physics. rather you're doing your best to simulate it with Inverse Kinematics.
      This setup is about 95% IK, with only the valve spindle being animated by hand.
