- Myself, James Leach (Sikth) and Stephen Platt (Collibus) were draughted in to play with Devin Townsend for his UK festival appearance at Bloodstock, UK. None of us had ever met and we only had a day and a half of rehearsals. The band and crew were all amazing and everyone played to the top of their abilities to pull off an amazing show and huge production.
The song is called Love by Devins old band Strapping Young Lad.

Gene would be proud!
Honestly, this set was the highlight of my entire weekend. Having this to look forward to was what got me through the first half of this year. Without a doubt the most impressive story of the entire festival aswell, given that you had such a short amount of time to rehearse and gel together as a band. Every one of you put on a superb performance and knocked it out of the park 🤘🤘
Mate. Thanks so much! That review won’t be beaten. Really pleased we made an impact. The effort to pull this show off was huge. Everyone pulled their weight! Especially Devin.
Thought id come and find this after you said it was in the set 😁🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
You guys did an incredible job especially given the circumstances! TRUE PROS!
Thanks. The whole band and crew pulled off a blinder.
The sound is HUGE. Outstanding work by the audio crew, and also outstanding drumming
LOVE it!
This sounds amazing!! Top job Darby. Look forward to seeing more.
Seeing this from this perspective after seeing it live on the night is awesome. You owned it dude.
Outstanding.. Done a phenomenal job both bloodstock and Manchester
Thanks man. Much appreciated! Both shows were so much fun to play.
Fantastic set, wish I was back there
Incredible drumming as always!!
love it!!
Amazing job….. well done!
UNBELIEVABLE !
You all did so freaking well. Even without the fact that you'd never met and had fewer than two days to rehearse, this would be impressive - that fact makes it better. Killer set!

Absolutely perfect set man, fucking awesome performance! Really looking forward to the Royal Albert Hall show 🤘🤘
Awsome job, man! 🤘🤘
You were bloody amazing at Manchester’s gig. So tight it was insane! I’m glad I discovered you!
Cheers man!
P E R F E C T I O N ❤️❤️❤️❤️
impecable skills my friend 🤘🏼🤘🏼❤️
Best seat on the house 🤘😎🤘
Awesome stuff! From everything I've seen you crushed it, especially considering the context of a couple days of rehearsal! Woulda loved to flown out from the US, tho easier said than done 😅
It was such an amazing show at Bloodstock. When Devin said he only met you guys 2-3 days prior just made the show even more incredible. March Of The Poozers was my favourite song from the night!
Thanks mate. Everyone did a lot of homework to pull this show off! It was hard work But so worth it.
@@DarbyTodd So good man😝 It must be pretty interesting how you were chosen for Devin. How did it come about if you don’t mind me asking?
@@alfieshaw2931 hey. I do a lot of work for Toontrack the company that make Superior Drummer. I record a lot of drum midi packs for them. Devin also does stuff for Toontrack. The owner of Toontrack is really close friends with Devin. They were both texting and the owner of Toontrack recommended me. Devin checked me out online, liked my playing and then contacted me. He def took a big chance booking us all on recommendations. I guess you could say it was down to knowing the right people. It was also cool foe me as James the bass player is from a band called Sikth who I’ve loved for ages!
@@DarbyTodd so damn awesome mate. Great how musicians come together.🤘🏼 Yeah, Sikth are awesome!😝
@@DarbyTodd The whole world runs on who knows who, doesn't make any difference what your craft is as far as that goes (I'm a statistician, same applies!) - Really great stuff, that does NOT sound like a band that only had a day and a half rehearsals. I for one would have zero hope of learning so many songs so quick and getting them down - Awesome stuff! 🤘🏼
I looked through the comment section because i figured someone would lhave asked this but can you explain your approach to get the 32nds on the bass drum that fast? It looks lilke just heel toe but does the gong bass drum on the left have anything to do with it? RRLG?
Of course. I don’t use heel and toe. I just try to be as economical with my motion. the gong was just me cheating the speed on some parts. I could play the song on just the feet but it was at the edge of my speed threshold and I preferred playing it between the gong and the feet. So the footing was GRRL. I’ve spoken to some people that feel it’s harder but it just felt really comfortable for me to play. But yes it is cheating I guess!!
Gene Hoglan would be proud!
Amazing playing and brutally accurate! - Are those SE T2's on overheads?
Thanks man. It was a fun gig. I’m doing Devs next European tour so looking forward to playing on more than a day and a half’s rehearsal! I’m not too sure what the mics were. They look like they could be AKG 414’s to me.
@@DarbyTodd Thanks! This reminds me of JP Bouvet covering for Matt in Periphery, very few can pull it off..., it's your musicality along with the accuracy that is just next level to me... A lot of players can blast for days but the hands go wooden, Re Mic's yeah they look like old AKG C414's which the T2's body is basically a copy of - It's the shock mount that looks the same as the T2 one hence me wondering if it is those, just curious as I hardly ever see anyone using them for overheads but love em!
@@davidshaw4574 thanks man!! I’m not really a blaster/metal guy but I just about pull it off! That Periphery learning vid is full of amazing knowledge. I’m def gonna watch that again for some inspiration as I have to learn 25 new tunes while I’m on a tour bus in America! Not as easy as being behind the kit in my studio.
Please for the love of god upload Detox too

@DarbyTodd : is this a cymatic audio LP16 (or LR16 ?) next to your mixer ?
What were you using it for ? Triggering backing tracks without needing a laptop ?
Hey. Yeah it’s a cymatic LP16. We were using the 24 but it broke down during soundcheck for the festival. The 16 was the back up. I actually prefer the 16 as I find it easier to operate with buttons on top. We were running backing tracks. Sound effects, keys etc. hope this helps. I love the Cymatic. It’s so much easier than using a daw on a laptop. Hope the info helps.
@@DarbyTodd thanks for the details man !
I also love Cymatic's stuff (I own a LP 16 and a LR16).
1:22 is that switch to heel-toe technique for higher double bass speed?
I think he did two on the feet and two on the left hand on the bass drum to the left of his hats?
Honestly I can't even begin to imagine learning an entire Devin set in a day...
Hey man. Yeah it was a lot to learn. Luckily I did have time to learn stuff at home but to get a production like this worked out in a day and a half was crazy!
@@DarbyTodd Just be glad he didn't suddenly decide to play Skeksis! :p
@@branthall1787 ha! I survived Almost Again!!
Awesome. Anyone talented enough to 1) be able to play this and 2) be selected be Devin to play this with, is certainly getting my hat tipped to them. Well done. Hopefully the full bloodstock show will be available soon.
@@DarbyTodd This might be a stupid question, but how familiar were you with Devin's work beforehand and had you played the drum parts to any of his songs before you knew you were going to be playing with him? Great job, BTW!
Never beat the great Gene Hoglan im afraid
i mean... maybe maybe not but like, cmon man...what is that comment. do you say that on ryans videos?
@@Spenjira Yes i have done in the past im entitled to my own opinion
