In 1998, I found the very same size and type hammer, that had been welded to a piece of 1/2” galvanised water pipe. Removed the pipe, cleaned it up and fitted a proper handle. It has been my main blacksmithing hammer ever since and is a little beauty! 👍😁👏👏
Awesome transformation. May God bless you for not running the music throughout the entire video. The tool sounds themselves make the best music. Even the sound of wiping on the finish is better than computer generated music. That said, you really do outstanding work. Thanks for sharing with us.
For restoration purposes, maybe you made it right, but for real life use - not at all. Firstly, welding the hammer is not the best idea, because the metal molecules change their grating and structure. The welded spots become hardened, which is not what you usually want for a hammer. Secondly, the wooden handle you made, it should not have a sharp "support" under the hammer. It should be cone shaped instead. Also, there is no need to use any epoxy. Properly secured handle is good enough and will last the life of the hammer, unless you break it by improper usage.
@@jamesreichardt7573 I am not into "restoration" business. I just repair the tools. And I have repaired them more than I can count of. This is not only limited to hammers or axles but much much more. What are you trying to say in your comment?

the handle turned out to be uncomfortable, all these extra bends get in the way. The flat head of the hammer is short, in these cases I use a thick spring from the truck, cut out a square and weld it to the hammer.
I know that the importance of safety is different for everyone but lord! Some very sketchy stuff going on here. Dude nearly lost some fingers on that tablesaw. At least homeboys sleeves were buttoned up while using the bandsaw.
It made me nervous too. Counterpoint is that the guy looked like he had been using saws like that for a long time, and still had all his fingers. Not something I would do. If he loses one, he will have no one to point a nub at, but himself.
Please be more careful mate, we want to watch more of your videos but if you've got no fingers it'll be a bit more difficult to restore things. We care. Good video.
Watching your hands so close to the band saw and table saw blade made me nervous just watching it. You could customise your own push sticks... Be safe. Merry Christmas 🎄
Question please: what’s the brand and model of that bench grinder? Looks like a nice setup in terms of size, paper, noise and also that chuck on the side to put a flex shaft I guess? Thanks.
Great job, even if it were kind of dangerous at some points 6:44. And as pointed by others, the welding of the battered parts without normalising and annealing the hammer afterwards, has probably damaged a bit its structual integrity. Technically speaking, the first handle, the welded one, was literally indestructible. Of course with the added weight, you had to be Thor to wield the hammer afterwards. But the outcome is a beauty.
While the steel handle is a lot stronger the rebar as a handle would do your wrist no favours I worked at the steel game for 11years what he did even that welding will in no way harm it C02 weld is a hard weld now if it were cast then he would be ruining the metal you need cast metal rods to weld cast 👍
As a blacksmith, Im telling you, u just ruined hammer, and I mean u welded on the face and peen of the hammer, and u destroyed the hardness of it by doing it. I hate when I see people doing this....
@@Metallism if your hammer is not hardened, it will mushroom the face or the peen to the sides, and that will lead to shrapnels, which are very dangerous
Is there a way to restore the heat treatment on such tools without a big-ass forge? I had to cut off the mushroomed part of a very old hammer, but I think it got too hot and isn't properly hardened any more
Yea take and get a oxygen acetylene torch get the hammer glowing hot enough where magnet won't stick then quench. Then throw in an oven at like 200°f for 4 hours

Clean and simple. Attention to detail. Took a lump of rust and turned it into art through craftsmanship.
Can you imagine the shock that would transfer into your hand using this thing before it was restored? It would seriously hurt using that hammer.
