- In this restoration I will show you how I restored a ball peen hammer and also how I created the most beautiful handle pattern. The end result will amaze you , enjoy the video !
This hammer was found in Scotland, found with the metal detector. I bought it from the person who found it, for $ 5, with the intention of restoring it and increasing its value. After the restoration process the price of this hammer will be around $80 to $100. Now, this hammer will help me a lot in my restoration projects because I really needed the tool too.
This restoration took me almost 2 weeks to complete and I invested almost $35. Hope you will enjoy this restoration video and maybe one day you will be able to restore one, just like I did, just with the help of this restoration video. This would be an accomplishment for me.
OK! That's all for today guys, enjoy the video and please consider subscribing if you want to see more cool restoration videos. Cheers !

There’s something so satisfying watching an item in the “sand blasting” tank. Almost Instant gratification.
This is true 😎
Yes definatly
Once you have a sandblaster, you will wander around looking for things to sandblast, anything.
The reason I like this channel
Thank you very much 🤗🤗
6:08 lol, "half as easy" actually means twice as hard.
Great vid, love the hammer.
Ops..english is not my native language and that sentence I translated with google. 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
@@CoolAgainRestoration It should be 'Twice as easy'.
Right. I wrote wrong🤦🏼♂️
I saw that myself, hehe. I thought it was an inside joke for master wood crafters. Wow, such talent! :-)
Thanks Eli 🍻😎
The end grain on that black locust wood is gorgeous.
True 🤩😎 glad you liked it
100% agree
There's something comforting about watching old tools being brought back to life, thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed 😊 thanks Leo
I don’t know if I’m more impressed by the work or how damn clean the shop is!
Thanks Vanayr 😇 I change the workshop location next month in December and maybe I will make a video about 😊
@@CoolAgainRestoration please do!
Wow, that hammer went from being a rust color, to grey, to black and silver. Cool. You really did justice to this old ball peen hammer. Not many hammers have a black locust wood handle. Ty for a great video!
Glad you liked it William. I try my best everytime

@@CoolAgainRestoration just found the channel an hour ago 1st vid i subscribed, good job mate i wish had as good a skills as you
Freshly blasted steel oxidizes very quickly, much quicker than the sanded surface will, so it isn’t as crazy as is appears to blue it to protect against rust and then sand the bluing off 😂😂
"this layer will protect against rust"
*sands off the layer*
Ik lol
welp, u can think about it as applying the bluying to halt current exposure, afterwards the surface being sanded and polished and oiled has protective effect, alhtough funny at first glance, its somewhat logical to do that, he isnt restoring it in 2 minutes, it takes some days, and you wouldnt want to let it catch rust again or things, cuz sanded metal rusts again very easily, wouldnt you?
True 👍🏻
@@tiberiubear6282 Yep. I live in S. LA where you can almost see rust flashing because of the humidity.

Your hand-crafting skills are impressive to say the least! It's nice to know that not all craftsmen/craftswomen have left us yet, excellent job on the restoration brother, and thanks for another great video. Rev. D.
You are so kind to say that Rev. D. . Thank you very much for appreciation 👍🏻cheers
You are brothers?
Restoring the ball-peen part cool indeed, but the handle creation was magnificent 👏👏👏👏 the finishing touches are first rate.
You are so kind to say that buddy, thanks a lot 👍🏻
@@CoolAgainRestoration i envy your skills, is why.
Ee
Black locust is extremely resilient wood. The bluing was a nice touch. This thing will last generations.
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed 😊 cheers
I have to say the hammer definitely has a character, well done for showing it.
Thanks and glad you liked it Eliad 👍🏻

Yes, it's reborn into another hammer, but this time it's shinier!

What a transformation!!! Good quality steel and great talent!!! Multiple skills yielding incredible results!!! You did a great job!! I enjoy doing amateur restorations… I found a WW2 shovel with a metal detector. I was able to save the blade and got a replacement handle. It’s the shovel I use when I go metal detecting now. Great job!!! The Old Army Scout…
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed so much 😊
Hello my friend David Thor. Beautiful work, buddy. Hugs☕☕☕☕
Thanks my friend Alvaro 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Работа и результат ОГОНЬ! Особенно "Момент" понравился...
This was incredible! That handle was an amazing creation and fits perfectly with the hammer. Excellent video!
Glad you liked it Chuck 👍🏻👍🏻thank you very much for appreciation
The most impressive part of this restoration is shaping the black locust wood handle BY HAND. This is an extremely dense and hard wood, nearly classifiable as an iron wood (sinks in water). Working this raw piece into a beautiful handle with minimal power tool assistance is testament to Mr. Cool's commitment to detail and work ethic.
Wow,thanks for this kind words 😇🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@CoolAgainRestoration Well deserved.
Very nice work on the hammer head. I like locust for ball pein handles but I have always made mine from green wood on the shavehorse using a drawknife. I learned from a third gen handle carver who had extraordinary skills. I watched him make one of these for me one day - from start to finish it took him 6 minutes. When he handed it to me all I had to do was let it season then hand sand and oil. I made some myself but it was always a challenge to get a nice oval shape that was comfortable in the hand. This was especially important if I wanted to used the tool for forge work on my anvil. I finally got his seal of approval but it took a lot of shavings to get there. Now I use a pnuematic drum sander with 4 grits for the sanding and I oil with walnut oil. It dries to a hard water resistant finish very quickly and isn't sticky. Overall - nice job and what a beautiful shop!
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed so much 😊awesome informations you delivered here 👏
To fully restore the metal with a store handle simply creates another nice hammer. But you preserved some of the history, and gave it a special handle with special wood. That hammer is a work of art, my friend.
I watch your ads to help you bring more restorations. Keep up the unique work. - Frank
P.S. Bring back the laser. 😎
Every time you amaze me how kind you can be. Thank you very much my friend. I try my best every time 😎
That wood was the perfect choice for the handle, beautiful pattern and wedge too.
Thanks a lot Antoni 🤩
That locust wood is gorgeous! So is that hammer!
Thank you very much Myke 👍🏻😎
Excellent work! That’s a beautiful hammer. I also enjoy restoring hammers, but you take it to the next level. That is some absolutely gorgeous wood that you made your handle from. I also like the contrast between the polished faces and the corroded areas from which the rust roughened it up. Again, beautiful work!!
Thank you very much and glad you enjoyed, Luke 👍 cheers
Thirty seconds in the video and I already have to say thank you for having and using proper punches.
😎thanks buddy
I am SO glad you didn't burn the handle. Beautiful way to bring that hammer back to life.
Glad you liked it 🥰
I kinda like the pitting that you couldn't fully sand smooth. The real winner of this project is that beautiful handle!!!
Thank you very much Mr Thomas 😊
This was an amazing restoration of an old, abandoned tool that was broken and left to decay. You've not only restored it to its former glory, but made it even better than before. If I had THIS hammer

This is cool to wake up to. Makes me want to get stuff done! Nice work.
Glad you liked Alan 👍🏻
I've become addicted to these restoration videos. Cool.
Glad you liked it G 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I like how you retained the character of the hammer by not polishing out the rust pitting except on the working surfaces of the hammer. Great job.
Thank you very much Jeff and glad you liked it 😊
Nice job man! Really impressive how you treat your wood! 😄
Thanks man
I love it, so simple yet soooooo satisfying. Keep up the good work
Beautiful job. Yes,they have a nice touch of history 🍻 cheers William
That’s wonderful. I have my Late Dad’s Ball Peen and it is very special to use it.
Very nice 🤩
Thank you for making a well dimensioned handle! I've seen a bunch of these were the handle is way too big for the hammer and it looks so weird lol
Yeah, this is true. I seen too some weird handles . Thanks Kyron 👍🏻
Gorgeous work, I'm really glad you kept the rust pitted finish
Thanks and glad you liked it Joanna 👍🏻
This is the sort of hammer that you find in a master craftsman’s shop.
Came for the work, left admiring the workmanship, especially with all the replies you give on these comments!
You are so kind to say that Alex. Thank you very much 🤩
Very nice David, another great restoration 👍🏽
Thanks a lot again 👍
6:11 - 'This attachment makes the work half as easy.'
Half as easy = twice as hard
Yes,you have right. I wrote wrong there 🤦🏼♂️ english is not my native language
You were really able to hammer your point home in that video and your ideas hit the nail right on the head , everything was handled very well and I can see you are a polished craftsmen who has been able to work out the ruff spots and wedge your way in for success ..... great work!!!!!
Thank you very much Frank Franks 😎👍🏻
😂
That handle is amazing just wow You earned a new sub for that one. I love how odies make wood feel so silky in your hand. Just amazing.
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed so much 😊
Those were probably the first nails that hammer has driven in over fifty years. Good on you for giving it a second life. I'd be proud to have that hammer in my hand. Kudos.
Thank you very much and glad you liked it Johnny 👍🏻🍻😎
Now that you have a hammer you’ll be able to start making things lol.
😎😎
yep in deed
Very Rick and morty. So you mine stuff to craft with and craft stuff to mine with?
Heh, I have basically that exact same hammer, only mine's been kept in a tool box, so still has the (probably) 100 year old original handle.
Wow..this is nice. Keep it like that, will worth something 👍🏻👍🏻😎
That mirror finish is incredible!👍🏻👍🏻
Incredible restoration!!! I AM impressed!!! Me and mine wish you and yours all things great and good; take care, be safe, all my best & God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Buffalo, Texas. 🤠🖖✝️🙏👍
Thank you very much Chuck ! Be safe you too 😎👍🏻🍻
Really nice piece, but when it comes to the handles of impact tools I think it’s best for the grain to be at a 45 degrees angle off center. It really prevents the tool’s handle from splitting with the gain during impact. Something this small might not immediately be prone to it, but a grain of 45 degrees could really give more life to the handle. I really like the hammer restoration though!
Thanks buddy. You have right with 45 degree angle 👍🏻
I recently put on a new hatchet handle made from the core of a very dense sloe brush stem, figuring such tight annual rings ought to be strong. Correct guess or boo-boo?
Yey! New vid! ❤
Yes Honey! Enjoy it 😎🥳
The handle is perfect, very fine job all around. New long life for this ball peen which will surely be treasured.
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed so much 😊
Something as simple as an old ball-peen hammer still deserves some respect. I love it.
Thanks a lot 😊
Me: No way he can restore this
Cool Again Restoration: Hold my beer
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@CoolAgainRestoration Can you do a Q&A at some point, doesn't have to be soon, just whenever your comfortable.
I have always wanted to turn a lil ball peen hammer like this into a survival hatchet. Great restoration, love how you left the pitting. A grizzled old war horse deserves to keep his honorable scars. And I love the gray of steel with no recycled content. Blues out so perfectly.
Thank you very much Josh and glad you liked it 😊cheers
Not only restored, restored with amazing taste. I can hang this hammer in my living room as vintage piece.
Nice to read this kind words. Thanks Adrian 👍🏻😎
That's a revival ! Beautyful result :)
Thanks 😊
You found it, and there was a metal detector with it? You're so lucky.
🤣🤣🤣 my english is not my native language, maybe some sentences are wrote bad there
He will restore the metal detector in another video.
🤣🤣🤣soon
Of course i want it. For a moment there I thought you were going to burn the handle like everybody else seems to be doing at the moment. Glad you didn't.
Have sense to burn it but not all wood can be burn. People make what they see at anothers, without know to much about. Glad you liked it Costa 👍🏻😎
I love these videos. Someone restoring and saving old pieces of history. Thank you.
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed 😊
That handle was really cool ... love that wood
Thank you Eddie 👍🏻
That turned out really nice! I would say that’s more like a $150 hammer!
Very nice resto, the handle is particularly good, well done! Even though you put quite a bit of work into this piece, I'm not sure how it would be worth $80-$100. I have restored well over a dozen hammer heads of various types and have a drawer full to go. I either use them as intended as hammers, or more than likely just use the heads as forms when working metal. Change the shape of the surfaces and presto, anew form. I don't try to sell them because no one cares how much work one puts into restoring it, it's just a hammer. Hammers are cheap.
Thanks for the feedback Toby. Now depends, look,Alec Steele sold one with $200,just because was forged by him...
It’s a thing of beauty. As ever a perfectly crafted project and video which I thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you.
Glad you liked it 🤗
Extra props for using my favorite kind of wood, black locust wood.
To be honest was my first try to work with this wood and I liked very much 👌
@@CoolAgainRestorationwe used to use as fence posts. It has twice the life expectancy as red cedar. I also used it in cutting boards. It's awesome wood. In parts of NYC it was used to make rain gutters on buildings. Some of those gutter are 200 yrs old and they still work.
I wouldn't use this Hammer, It is so beautiful that hitting something with it would hurt my soul
Hi Erick. Yes,I polished again after that test 😅
Never thought I'd see the day when someone referred to rust as being "impregnated" into something
Sorry Chloe if something is wrong. English is not my native language..
@@CoolAgainRestoration I mean, I totally understood and its a perfect descriptor!! So youre all good lmao!
Thanks buddy 🍻
I love how the wood polishing compound just looks like another piece of wood.
True 😊👌
Felicidades por estupendo trabajo y acabado...
Thanks Martin 👍🏻
Not paying 80$
I can make $80 in a couple of hours; even this simple restoration would take more than that.
Looking at this as a saving is wrong.
It may have been a 9 minute video, but I expect it would have been a 9 hour restoration!
Turned a $5.00 hammer into a $9.00
I wouldn't give more than a dollar for it.
You haven’t priced hammers lately have you?
@@jhscheppele2448 try a flea market or yard sale ballpeen hammers are five to ten bucks at the most two bucks without the handle. Then bye a handle and hang it Nine dollar tool
@@jhscheppele2448......2 years ago.
Are you joking? 9$ and 1$ wow your being mean to be mean. You know you wouldn’t be able to buy that for less than 30$/50$
You should drill a hole through the bottom of the cut for the wedge. It will keep the handle from splitting. Hammer looks awesome. Nice restoration.
Thanks Mitch 😊
It's amazing that even after decades of neglect, this hammer still works perfectly.
way to nice to use as a normal ballpein hammer;your skills are second to none
Thanks a lot Angus 😊
The handle!!!! Excellent job!!!
Glad you liked it 🤗
I use black locust for all my hatchet and axe handles. I’m so glad to see someone else finally make a video with it. It’s such a great wood. I prefer it to ash or hickory
Glad you liked it Casey 😎
