This is my friend Josh. He was the second mountain bike friend I ever had, and we embarked on the long journey of learning to ride mountain bikes together as we rode all over Atlanta around 2012.
Fast forward to today, and we have both followed divergent paths that have lead us in opposite directions: me with the vagabond life, and Josh with a steady job, wife, house, and now... child!
It's been some time since we have gotten together for a ride, about 2 years in fact, so as I headed over to Ellijay, GA today to ride one of my favorite loops in the South East, I gave him a call to see if he wanted to join. I'm not sure what miracle happened, but he said yes and met me for a pretty epic day of backcountry mountain biking.
What better place to have our little reunion than at one of the best singletrack loops in the entire southeast: the Bear Creak, Pinhoti 1, and Pinhoti 2 loop out of Mulberry Gap!
Today as Josh and I catch up, we will be giving you all a tour of this pristine slice of singletrack right in the north Georgia mountains, a mere 2 hours out of Atlanta. Boasting a massive elevation gain and loss of 3300 feet each, many find this hard to believe this trail exists where it does, which is why it's one of the best kept secrets of the south!
Grab a beer, and put on that chamois, because we're going for a ride!

For many of us that grew up in the far south, this was one of the first true mountain experiences we had on a mtb. Who all has some fond memories in the North GA Mountains? I sure do...
Yeah, I do. But that was nearly 20 years ago. We used to do the Bear Creek to Potato Patch Mtn to Mountain Creek Loop. I understand that Mountain Town Creek trail no longer exists. I no longer live in GA, but definitely have good memories of the mountains in the north there.
I rode Mountaintown 2 weeks ago and it is still amazing!
Thats a tough race dude!!
Man I bet those creeks were running high!
It didn't help that I was clipped in and went swimming!
I LOVE that you stopped to look at the tree and that you called out the idiots for carving on the tree.
,,These leaves will get you!" Proceeds wheelieing
BlordD12 yeah less contact on the slippery leaves means less chance of slipping on them right?!
That was a great ride! Even with as out of shape as i was.... The shinner hurt me just watching.
Great memories of our final Redemption 17 ride! Waiting out the pouring ass rain and getting in some solid shredding!
Man I remember that day so well! Such an epic adventure. Cant wait for more :P
That was the best bike check ive ever seen
I enjoy your videos so much, they always get me so stoked on riding. Can't wait for the weekend!
I really like the fact that you stopped to show us the big tree. That's what makes MTB great
Thanks Nick, gotta stop to smell the roses amirite?
Great point about the name carving ...
So great to get out with an old bro and shred some killer trails., yes! that last section looked waay fun! Thanks for sharing that tree!
Always good times riding with old friends..👍
Second time around, still EXCELLENT...
Leaves got me that's why I am still injured. Had no idea they were so slippery. So stoked for you to be featured in single-track magazines stuff. You should be a freelance writer for them. Good stuff Alexander
Yo dude - keep it up! Love your commentary on the vids and really enjoy the off-the-bike segments as well. Hope the youtube woes resolve themselves sooner than later!
Getting loose! Love it. Sick riding bro!
I went to Mulberry Gap campground and ran P1 and P2 a couple weeks ago. Fantastic area.
"Go up the thing - Go up the thing" LMAO!
I didn't know what else to call it, but I knew he'd know what I meant! lol
Agree that was hilarious and he went up that thing, stopped and then they gave high fives.... Awesome
MY KIDS ARE TEENAGERS SO NOW i RIDE WHENEVER i WANT BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANNA HANG WITH ME ANYMORE! GREAT VIDEO!
Take me in please i will go riding everyday :)
clint antrim mountain bike trail tours Lol. My son is 8. I'm dreading him getting a car.
Same.
My kids don't hang with me either. I have to ride alone. But I keep wanting to buy them mtb stuff. And it just collects dust.
Louann Velasquez, yeah I know what you mean! I was able to get my son to go a couple of times but he's just not diggin it yet! Lol 😂
ALEX, you had me dying i was laughing so hard at 10:50 "MAN DOWN"....another badass trail dude !!!
lololol I got sniped dude!!
Went over the bars last weekend because of leaves! Yeaaa! 🤘Love the vids man!
Another find trail, glad you got to ride with a friend you haven't connected in a while.
Has a gut and still rips. I love it!
i was just smiling through the entire trail... just here to tell u that ... keep it up man
I have heard so many great things about Mulberry Gap! You guys are RIPPIN'!!
You gotta check that place out for sure Sonya - awesome shoulder season spot if you can tear yourself away from desert riding :D
The Singletrack Sampler alllll of the above! Although I heard it was snowing in Georgia today!!!
DUDE...I wish I knew you were in town. One of these days I will get to meet you and ride the Pinhoti's!! Nice and leafy video!! Stay Stoked!!
I last five seconds were hilarious. Great ride boys!
Glad to see you ridin in GA
That was fantastic Alex🤜🏻, What a bloody great video I well enjoyed that thank you ,What a ace trail and big up to your buddy Josh and his Baby 👶 peace brother and thanks again Alex! Ed.
I see what you did there Eddy.... bloody great ;)
I was literally looking this trail up at work yesterday because I’m going see family in mccaysville, I’m going to have to hit the trail 🤘🏻
Alex, dude! Good time to watch a little Singletrack Sampler, man! I'm just sitting at home recovering from the surgery on my broken clavicle. If you can't ride, then the next best thing is watching others. So glad to have these channels with you, Seth, Brian, Phil, Nate, and Dusty Betty. Thanks for keeping these up.
10:18 - Dude, I got so annoyed with the voice activation on my GoPro Hero 6. It's very convenient, but it's also pretty easy to fool and it doesn't learn just your voice. Anyone can start that up or shut it down. And even it THINKS it hears a command, it will activate. I had so many recordings shut off prematurely because the camera picked up a random sound an interpreted it as a command. So ultimately, I just shut off the voice command capability.
12:53 - Speaking as a photographer, I love this shot of your friend and you under the Road Closed sign.
I don't want to sound like one of those people who says "please subscribe to my channel". I take a risk of coming across that way when I say if you want to see the video of my crash which ended me up in the emergency room with a broken clavicle, I've finally got it posted on my channel. I'd be honored if you watched it. Maybe even subscribe to my channel? Haha! I guess I did it after all. Sorry, dude. 🤪 😇

Stay upright and keep the rubber side down, man!
-Brian
Great video!!!!
I shouldn't watch your vids b4 bed - gets me all stoked to ride ! lol
Awesome video Bro!
love your vids keep it up got inspired to mtb .. :)
Great ride buddy!!! My last ride ended up the same way with me crashing on my side with all the brown ice on the trails. LOL But it was still fun. Live free and keep riding hard pal.
Alex bro, you've gotten so much faster!! It's rad to see the improvement after conquering that section in Utah!
Yooo thanks Homie!!
I did that loop back in Feb of this year during an unexpected snow shower...talk about tricky! Can't imagine trying to ride it with the snow from last week! I figured you'd make mention of the Gennett poplar.
Super jazda, pozdrawiam tego z brodą na rowerze.
Oh yeah! Dude you were FLYING on those downhills bro! 💪 Been too long since I've ridden Pinhoti!! Inspiration!
Gotta love the Pinhoti! For a lot of us that grew up south of NC, that was the first major trail system we hit
Welcome back!
Just bought a shirt bro🤘 love what you're doing
Great vid, heading out there sometime next year.....
Thanks Angelo! You will love it dude!
im 1hr 30 min away. Planning a trip with my buddy! cant wait!!
Damn!!!! Best Ponhoti video EVER!!!! Now I HAVE to go ride it. Thanks Alex!
+eduardo morales YES!! that's what I wanted to do 🤘 there's no great video up if that ride... Until now
That just look flat out fun! Nothing better than ripping with one of your ole buds.
Love Bear Creek. I had one of the worst falls I've ever had on a mt bike at that switchback at the 3:40 point in that video. I almost slid all the way down to that FS road that you see below.
I love those trails! Super fun and very pretty. Be ready to put in some work in order to enjoy the downhills, though. Pay to play!
The part I left off the thumbnail..... 3300 feet of climbing XD
Yup!!
Did the ride from the lower parking area and climbed bear creek up to the upper area you started from, with about a 10 mile detour haha. Amazing ride!! I wandered where Pinhoti 1 and 2 downhills where now I know. Cool video. BTW when the kids get older they can shred with you!!
Yea dude, that's absolutely the beauty of kids. Probably adds a whole other level of stoke!
Just ran the Mulberry Gap on my full rigid single speed. Its about 24.5 miles if you pedal to the top. The climb on the gravel road up was tough. 100% correct on that first little section. Very, very technical and little actual reward if you pedaled up to drop into Bear Creek. However, you can cut in via a trail running parallel near that first creek crossing. That cuts out the super technical section and a bit of the gravel grind. Downhill sections are tricky on a full rigid because the trail is very narrow in some sections and there is only a few options when picking your lines. Get into some chatter with limited traction and it is very easy to overshoot the corners. Climbs will rip you lungs out if you SS, but totally do-able. Ran a 32x18 and got stopped twice. Going to try 32x20 at some point to try to even out the pace.
Got to love old growth trees
Nice Bronson dude!
10:43 BEARD hahaha another great video
yeah bud ! MTB is love
Awsome video though! Keep them up!
+Ty Wells thanks ty!!🤘
Alex you should ride in WNC when it snows! SNOW MTB get stoked!!
You should come to Oregon this summer to ride. That would be so sick!
This is why I lived in America, so many different places to ride
This was the best time to ride bear creek. Im a local and now they are ‘fixing’ bear creek by bench cutting it and ruining it. They have made it past the poplar from the bottom and it is a lot worse.
I just did P1 and P2 yesterday. No shuttles :) The FS road was being redone. Sooo muddy.
I feel your buddy Josh’s pain. Being a 37 year old dad and not being able to ride a lot is tough!
Those woods are spooky 👻
alex, ten dollar kids soccer shin gaurds. right under the sock, can barely feel them and offer great protection> awesome vids brother!!
Hey I hit that up Thanksgiving weekend with my buds hell yeah Keep it up Alex. Also, I know Josh too!! sick
Great place to spend Turkey Day!
Throw some neon green in with that hot pink and that's a sic ass Santa Cruz. Stay stoked buds
Sickness!
Dude! That peddle gash was Gnar. Nice trails man.
Man you shoulda seen it like 5 minutes later.... all over my leg!
Great trails...ride them often as they are less than 2 hrs from the house, wish the poplar was in better shape.
I think I saw you at Ingles in Ellijay this afternoon
Getting out riding is tough with young kids. I used to get out dam early and ride before work. You can't do any epic rides but if you want to ride, a 50 minute ride on a tamer trail is better than nothing.
Those Freerider pros are the best pair of shoes I have owned.
There should be a pick jersey and socks with that pretty cool pink bike. If you want to proof something, go full.
Warmed up!
Warmed up and worn in! XD
P2 is definitely the best downhill on that loop, but you guys should hit up Mountaintown as well. That may be the best DH in GA and Mulberry will shuttle you to it.
great trail - just me or has your riding gotten faster, aggressive and more confident ? Inspiring
I can't wait to get my mtb and go to mulberry gap cause that place is only about 2 hrs from my house.
Rad, Bearcreek is one of my favorites... Did you ride Mountaintown too? It's schaweet!
I Like to wheelie through crossings
I have a three-week-old. I will not be riding for some time. Living vicariously through you, Seth, Brian, Phil, Gene...
+Sal Picataggio don't sweat it Sal, we got you covered, and you will be riding with your little one before you know it!!
I plan on getting her a Strider as soon as she can toddle! She'll cut her teeth on those gnarly Central Florida trails!
quick question: which side are the back and front brake levers on the handlebars in the US? cos down under in australia our back brake is on the left and front is on the right. Are they the same?
Laughable leafy crashes and Martian language hilarious, sounds like a great time to be had by all 😎😎😎😎😎
You shrug off falls now like it's nothing lol. I go down and I'm shaking in my bones for the rest of the ride.
It's a bit easier when they are into soft leaves :D
Alex, I wish I knew you were coming out bro... I'd come ride with you. I have you a free place to stay up there if you need it.
your the best
+Max Phypers 😁😁😁
Alex, if I have ever make it to the US of A, I am hitting you up to show me some trails...
Hit me up and I'd be so stoked to help you pick where you need to ride!
the "bird foot" that marks the trail is actually a turkey foot. it comes from the Creek Indian word meaning "turkey home".
You mean tell everyone about your expensive walking stick. Haha just joking awesome videos.
Damn I wish I was there
what grips do you have on your bike?
Come to patapsco state park in Maryland
please tell me youre gonna come to the uk! gotta show you my local!
I swear i'm gonna get there eventually
The Singletrack Sampler RAD!
Leaves and pine straw will make a good rider look like a rookie!
have you ridden blankets creek or allatoona creek
Hey Alex, I noticed you ride with the DMR Deathgrips for your handle bar grips. Do you like them? I'm considering buying a pair but not 100% sure yet. What do you think of them? Thanks :)
+Nick Forsyth yo Nick! Yea man I really like them and definitely recommend
Thanks man! Live free, ride hard, and get stoked!!!!
Hey dude, left you a message on your last video about a van... Let me just start by saying, I'm not trying to sell you anything, I'm trying to help hook you up! I'm a huge fan here in the North East, have been watching for about a year now and am constantly waiting for your new vids to come out! (I will have to wait to watch the one I am commenting on until my girl gets home cause she loves watching your vids too!)! I found BKXC and Seth's Bike Hacks through your channel (amongst others) and am always amazed and a bit envious of your lifestyle! You are living the dream bro! I have, for years now, wanted to get my own van and trick it out for all kinds of adventures on the road. My dealership just helped a local guy (Massachusetts) get an awesome Sprinter to set up for similar adventures. If I can help, I'd really like to! Live Free! Ride Hard! Get Stoked!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Boomer
Hey dude, thanks for the message and reaching out! Can you shoot me an email? address is in the about me section
If you keep at it while parenting, a few years in they'll look at you and say "I want a mountain bike dad". Next thing you know, there will be an 8 year old riding singletrack with you :P
About how long is this ride? Did you do it all in one day?
watching this in class because "priorities"
+Steven Daniels hope you have a good friend to get notes from!
Same
I am watching your livstream right now
Called it's a great day to be outside
+the tech byte woohoo!! 👌👌
Where can I get a Yaaa Boiiiii T-shirt?
A second before your fall the sun was blinking through the trees. Stuff like that always gets me distracted. Might've also been the cause for you fall.
I wish I could blame it on something like that :P
Leaves are almost as good an excuse :D
New Dad lack of sleep kills the climb. lol
lolol Either that or you take micro naps during it so they just don't seem so bad :P
Saddest day as a father so far is when the kids stop napping. Not because they still needed it, but I sure as hell did.
