This is why so many creators get upset. RUclips really doesn't do anything to promote smaller creators. Great video as always
Promotion works the same for channels of any size. You put out a video that people want to watch and RUclips will put it in front of those people it thinks would like to watch a video like that. How the audience responds determines how far it gets promoted.
I agree with this. RUclips algorithm is too quick to dismiss a new video as trash and puts it in like the 10th page of the search results. Each search you do it’s always the same 4 videos that come up first.
@@NickNimmin I think he is talking about numbers. We have few numbers of big channels which taking out audiences time. Also we have large numbers of small channels which are too taking our time of audience. Since bigger channels are promoted with home and suggested smaller channels don't have this. They can have this home and suggested but before they need to compete with 1000 of others small channels and with big channels that already took time of audience. And the time is currency we all compete.
The main problem of small is time already spended and audience tired of category which they competing. Any ideas on that or will keep to yourself?
Success is not an overnight process, unless there is a ton of luck involved. But even if you do get lucky with one video and it goes viral, you’re not guaranteed that your channel will go viral. And that’s speaking from experience. My channel launched in Jan, this year. I’ve got over 1 million views on my channel, but only a bit over 4K subs. And that’s not me bragging or indicating that I’m not happy with where I’m at. I’m just using my channel as an example that it takes time and effort to grow. The intent, I believe for every small youtuber, is to create content that people are going to engage with. The more engagement you get, the more your videos will get promoted across the platform. If you see that your content is not getting engagement, then you may want to look at some of the reasons why it is not, and try tweaking a bit. It’s the small steps that lead to big success. Sure, some of the bigger channels may have started at a time when the algorithm wasn’t as detailed, and the rules may have changed, but they still need to create content that gets engagement as well in order to remain successful.
And to be brutally honest, don’t worry about comparing yourself to bigger channels, unless it’s to inspire you, and/or to help your channel grow. Focus on your content, remaining consistent, and staying positive.

I've been thinking I could vary my topic to try and grow my few hundred to a higher number, and neglected why those few hundred came in the first place. I've learnt the hardway with poor stats this last few weeks trying to do this.

"Respect the Audience's time" is my guiding principle in making entertaining content. To me, it means cut out redundant, off topic, boring parts of the video and only offer the best parts. I think you touch on a similar idea in a bunch of your points
Yes, yes, yes! I cut out 30% of my first video on the final edit - all the gaps, repetition, irrelevant, negative bits. I would cut out another 30% if I could make it again. Now I aim to keep every video under 5 minutes long.
I admit that what you've said is true. But if people can't leave comments on your video, you keep yourself from learning what your audience likes and what it doesn't like.

Hey Nick. We have just really started to get serious about making content for our channel. It originally was just to keep family in the loop with what was happening. But now as we want to grow our homestead farm we are using our channel to both document everything and be a source of information for our followers. Thank you for these videos as they are very helpful and as we work to grow we can implement a lot of proven formulas.

Having a niche actually hurt our channel so on the fence about that. Though recently we did at least branch off our music, and women's beauty/ lifestyle stuff to separate channels respectively. Music has done great. So true certain milestones like first day of school viewers unless they already have a vested interest in your family could care less. Save it for Instagram and Facebook. Great and practical advice! Thanks for sharing!
One of the other things I've recently learned as a creator and even as an artist (because lot of my content fits a particular narrative) is starting off strong with what you enjoy and what you are good at doing. Lot of people like you said, start off not knowing what they want, so they try looking for the next best thing or do something they think will enjoy, but doesn't get them the result they were looking for, which in turn will cause you to burn out faster.
I had to take a step back and look at what I enjoy doing before I started video creating, and then apply that to my videos. People will gravitate towards your content better when they know you are genuine about what you do. Combine that with being an interesting person that others will like to watch, and the audience will find its place.

narrowing down to a particular niche really helped boost my views and subscriber count and also got youtube to suggest my videos to more people. when i started, i talked about things in general, then i gradually realised i had more ideas and did better with videos on love andrelationships. and so i just concentrated on that, and my channel has been doing so much better
That's cool. I always thought it'd be fun to start a channel about random things/topics just like you started doing. Being able to talk about something different in each video, and not be pressured if you don't have a niche, sounds exciting to me. Not having a niche is terrible! That's me alright.
I got views close to zero, likes close to zero, everything close to zero despite putting very specific content out there. It just gets shown to 7 people and that's it. And it is actually a valuable thing, people told me this would even be monetizable on my web, for instance. But no, 7 ppl and it goes back to sleep, each time I upload. RUclips is a bully, it knows who I am deep inside I guess.

@@lovelessonsbygoldero763 Bu even if I did, wouldn't it hurt me later suppose they would stop engaging with my content? Say I tell 50 people to watch my every video, they do it twice and go about their business. Doesn't it then show the algorithm that only a percentage of my audience watches my content? It is very technical language learning advice and most of them are not into it. It is not typical entertainment where I dip pig heads into CocaCola for fun.
The other mistake that keeps your channel small: spending a whole minute at the beginning telling people to subscribe/like/comment/notification/join/etc, things any newborn knows about by now. Put that stuff in your title sequence and be done with it.

Content is king. Also dont forget to optimize your title, tags and description. As a smaller channel you really want LONG tail keywords with almost 0 competition, but audience to them. Hard, but doable. Requires research.

Thanks for explaining this perfectly. An influencer on Twitter only posted, 'God is good' and got over 2K likes and loads of retweets in 5 minutes. I sat there looking baffled and wondering if people only just cottoned on that 'God is good'. It's simply because of who posted it (sounds pretty unfair when the rest of us slave our guts out and hardly get any interaction) but we move.

This is such crucial information. RUclips is ran by an Algorithm. An Algorithm is a set of rules written by coders that tells RUclips how to push out certain videos. The goal of RUclips is to keep you watching as much content as possible (show you ad, they make money). Therefore, it is in RUclips's best interest to find content that will succeed. This video perfectly explains that. This man is so valuable he should be his own NFT.
The bad news is that RUclips is controlled by an algorithm. But the good news is that most content creators aren't controlled by an algorithm. If a small RUclips channel watches a video like this, then they should read the comments left on the video. Then they can interact with other small RUclipsrs and cause their channels to grow.
Just starting my journey and this is will be my mantra. What attracts YOU to a video? Just make sure you do THAT.

This is all wonderful advice! All of it is valuable, but we found the tips about varied content particularly helpful, as we've branched out a little in our content and video types, but have tried to keep consistent with the overall purpose of our channel: to discuss production design in film. This gives me some confidence that we're not doing things totally incorrectly. :)
Man, educational stuff content is even harder to hit audience, especially if something like medical education. The audience is so streamlined that hitting the target audience is very very difficult, especially with bigger names already in the medical youtube industry. Still, I will keep trying , every successful person starts like this ,I guess...
And if someone took the time & pain to read my entire comment, thank you. You already have the greatest ingredients of success- Patience !!

I'm just trying to stay consistent in uploading. I was on vacation when I started editing videos, but now that I'm back at work, I'm going to be lucky to get one or two videos a week. I know it's going to be a slow build, but this is more of a hobby for now.
Interesting discussion on finding your niche. We premised Airailimages on an observation we made over many years: aviation enthusiasts are often also railfans; train buffs also like airplanes. Hence, Airailimages. We are growing, but seem to have hit a post-lockdown slowing down period. Aviation videos tend to get more views more quickly, but the most-viewed video on our channel, at more than 9 million views, is a train video. We have noticed more and more channels are offering both planes and trains... Hey, thanks for making thought-provoking videos for content creators.

Finding a niche was a bit challenging in the beginning. Also thumbnails and titles went through some crazy development process to find what works!

I’m starting out super rough… never made a video until March or April. Us newbies do take a lot of influence from creators we watch, and that can make them be lost in the abyss. My best advice right now is just start recording and begin the learning process. The people will come in time. My videos suck, but they get better each time I try again. It’s a fun journey so far and I think that is the most important thing. I wish you all the best of luck. Stay UNIQUE and thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
