- A superb morning session spent at Stafford on the West Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway, Cross Country and freight from Freightliner, DB Cargo UK, GBRF, DRS, Colas Rail, Network Rail and test runs by Greater Anglia and West Midlands Railway.
Stafford station is a fairly large station and I used as a junction station for traffic travelling all over the country. Services from this station serve Manchester, Liverpool, Crewe and stations to the South of England. There are two lines meeting at this station, the main branch of the West Coast Mainline that goes via the Trent Valley and the second section that takes the line through the heart of Birmingham which allows for greater connections from Birmingham New Street.
The station was opened by the Grand Junction Railway in 1837. This was the first station to be built on the site, however it soon became inadequate because of the amount of passengers and trains using the station which then meant that a second station was built in 1844 which was then superseded by another station in 1862. Eventually all three getting replaced by the current station in 1962 to follow the modernisation of the West Coast Mainline.
Please do keep an eye out for part 2 where there is much more to be seen.
I always love coming to this station and this has to be one of the best days I've had when I've been here. Part 2 has something really special to be seen!
I hope to see you all for part 2.

Lol. @1:10 "These two attributes I don't have". I feel the same way sometimes 😁
11:50: 😂😂😂😂😂. Cough Central to Liverpool Lime Street and Fandago to Rugby. LOL
That at 25:20 was myself and children. It was incredibly kind of the driver allowing them into the cab, although they freaked out!
I'm absolutely gutted I didn't realise it was yourself else I'd have come say hello. They are always watching your videos and provide them with Hours of entertainment
I though I saw him on a train, but I didn't think he would be stepping on a train that go's through the East Lancashire Line
He was stood well up the platform so couldn't see a face clear enough to realise
@@andrewfothergill3336 I'm sure at some stage throughout the year you'll bump into me somewhere around the country! If you do see me then please do come up and say hello!
Thanks loving the channel
Hello sir. I am 71 with 37 years doing 11 jobs on the railways. So sorry but I need a chat. 7:25 platform 4 a 390 comes which you say Glasgow Central to London Euston via Birmingham. The signal at the end of p4 is a flashing yellow which tells the driver the next signal which has 3 routes is set for either Trent Valley or Loop with a speed limit but route is set and signal off. Only direct to West Midlands if p4 signal is green 65mph. Trent Valley 40mph and Loop 40mph. At Stafford I do like to see junction signals. David
Always quality and entertaining, thank you.
Thank you kindly!
That one was great. THX
Thanks very much for saying so!
3:08 tunnocks teacake
Excellent video as well
Thanks very much!
Those are delicious 😋
The best trainspotter/youtuber/commentator is back.
That's very kind of you to say
Brilliant video - looking forward to part two. I've been watching your content regularly for four years and I think that your conversation with yourself about biscuits at the beginning was quite possibly the most ridiculous and most amusing thing I've ever heard in said four years' worth of videos - although it sums up why your videos are the most entertaining trainspotting ones on RUclips in a nutshell. Here's to 2023!
Thank you kindly and thank you for sticking with my channel for so long now it really is greatly appreciated! I will always try and throw in some humor when I get the chance to as it gives you guys a chance to interact with me a lot more!
Great video, Avanti seem to have completely changed around the stopping patterns, Stafford now seems a lot busier with Avanti stopping services than it used to be
It is nice to se Avanti using this station a lot more now
An absolutely cracking first part! So much variety including a Class 56! Great video.
Thanks very much! I'm glad you enjoyed watching this!
Great to hear your dulcet tones on RUclips again.
Thank you kindly
Another great video and class 56 sounds amazing
Another terrific video, that Class 56 looked great dragging that load of empties.
I always look forward to your videos of the local railscene
Cheers, Dave in Oz
Thanks very much Dave, I'm glad you enjoyed watching this! I had a great time getting this put together
Great video and great way to start 2023 and confirmation DR76911 is part of electrification train
Thank you kindly and thank you for the info for DR76911! Greatly appreciated!
Excellent footage from Stafford. Always a good station for traffic!
Thanks very much! This is always a great station to come to!
Another great vlog ps nice to see you back happy 2023
Thank you kindly
Hi Tornado922. Great part 1 of trains at Stafford. Nice 2-tone from 390122 at 49:00. Forget 'World Wide Web', WWW now stands for 'Well Weathered Wagons'! 😆 Looking forward to part 2. Kind regards, Chris.
Thanks very much Chris, I'm glad you enjoyed watching this :)
Great to see a video from you. Really missed them.
I usually take the bulk of January off from doing any filming and then always start my year with a day spent at Stafford, always a great station to come to
Great video at Stafford like that livery on the 90 can't wait for part 2
Thanks very much, I always enjoy coming here!
Great railway video mate, nice start for trainspotting in 2023.
Thanks very much!
Great video ❤️❤️ very nice 👍👍🌹🌹🥰🥰
Thanks very much!
Great video man that 56 was a beauty to watch and that 92 was beautiful all in all great film i enjoyed watching it i cant wait for part 2. Can you got to letchworth soon please
Thanks very much! There was a great amount of variety passing through that day which I will certainly not complain about! I will see what I can do in regards to Letchworth
Yeh I wouldn't complain
I saw 66010 twice on the ECML At the Sidings Hotel back in August 2022
Very nice!
Another great video 📹 👏 👍 lol 😃
Thanks very much!
Great video thanks
Thanks very much!
Awesome video as usual Jarred
Thanks very much!
The two car yellow train at roughly 6 minutes in is a MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle), they can be found with a variety of equipment onboard them, sometimes including water tanks for RHTT duties. I don't know what this specific equipment is though, looks like some kind of crane onboard so may well be an electrification thingy.
It's also on Spotlog and it's called a Windhoff MPV with structure equipment
@British Trainspotting thanks for the clarification there! It's greatly appreciated
@@Tornado922 No problem! There's quite alot to learn about the non-TOPS classified trains in the UK.
DR76913 is part of the electrification trains which was used on the GWML it's used to deliver piles and piling for OHLE
Thanks for letting me know!
Stafford is always a great station to come to I can't fault it
One of the many reasons why I always start my year off here
Amazing
Thanks very much!
Great stuff sir. I can't wait for part 2
Thanks very much
66738 is Huddersfield town wishing you a Happy new year finally
I think it may be the first time I've seen that loco
The biscuit conversation made me giggle aha
I haven't got a clue where that conversation even came from, I just started chatting about it and then went off on one haha
I love your content I also live in Leighton buzzard also I saw a scrap move yesterday of se 465
Thanks very much! Leighton Buzzard was where I grew up so I will always think of that as my home town! I don't think it would have been a scrap move, I think it may have been taken to one of the depots up north to have some work done to it
Great content, well filmed.
Thank you kindly
11:04 just the opposite considering the 90’s will be on there way out due to the costs (+ Malcolm not wanting to pay the bill so expect a 66 to run WCML intermodals) so the 92’s still need a way to get from Crewe to Wembley. I bet the 90 is on that for back up purposes due to a shortage of components for the 92.
Great video! Nice to see a 92 out and about
That particular 92 has been running up and down the line for the past few weeks after a 7 year hiatus of being in storage, the 90 was put on the back as insurance should the 92 fail on it's journey. It would be nice to see 92's running freight on the WCML though
A decent first part there with plenty of freight to be seen, also including 92 with the Backbone liveried 90 and the 56 as well! 390130 was running from Glasgow Central-London Euston via the Trent Valley route. Realtime Trains had their information on the workings before they all expired. When they do expire, it doesn't allow me to tell you any numbers that you missed depending on what operators are on know your train as may generally be the case for a lot of this year I would have thought depending on when your films get released.
I always enjoy starting my year off at Stafford because of all the variety in traffic that passes through, and the day I spent there was certainly no exception
2:40 the reason they have two Crewe - Birmingham services within 5 mins of each other is because one train goes via Smethwick (the more direct way), while the other goes the long way via Tame Bridge Parkway, essentially doubling back on itself
Ah right I see, that would certainly explain it! Thanks for the info!
It turns out Avanti now have got the Liverpool Lime Street train stopping at Milton Keynes Central and the reason for this is Avanti introduced a new timetable back in December which has meant the Liverpool trains stopping Milton Keynes and then Crewe
A very good Sunday evening buddy from Alan in Lowestoft buddy but not such a happy new year buddy as I lost my dad yesterday buddy
Hello there Alan, I'm sorry to hear about your dad! My most sincere condolences to you and your family
I like the vid, keep it up! I recorded a few trains and tones at Watford Junction I will post the link up here soon
Thank you kindly
@@Tornado922 No problem
Well wathered weggons! 🙂
I'll make it a new saying haha
Happy new year
Happy New Year to you too!
66782's GBRF charity railtour livery keeps being not entered into Spotlog Jarred
I'm sure there's a reason for that
Top quality video mate! I really want to head to Stafford one day but it'll be a bit expensive to head there from the North West. Also I'm heading to Crewe for my birthday this year and I'm just wondering how the platform staff are like with trainspotters there.
Thank you kindly! Station staff at both Crewe and Stafford are perfectly fine with trainspotters! I've never once had an issue and have never heard of anyone having any issues with station staff whilst they have been there. I hope you have a wonderful time when you do go to Crewe
@@Tornado922 thanks mate!
I'm hopefully going down to Crewe in April or May, will have my railcard by then. Gonna be heading to Preston in a few weeks time as well hopefully!
Yes it is
The freight wagons at around the 22:30 mark seem to make a sort of whirring sound. I hear this often and sometimes it's fairly loud, any ideas what it is?
i guess that's just the rolling noise of the wheels and the track ("steel on steel")
@@matzkoooo Well that's certainly a logical answer but passenger carriages don't make that noise. (aside from these modern DMU types that have multiple driving axles, but that noise they make is the straight cut gears from the traction motors to the axles.)
@@julianstafford7071 maybe that's because of different parts built in the wagon, freight wagons using different brake systems, simpler suspension etc 🤔
Hey quick qustion how do u know wht the number on the train is if it’s passing by fast
6:05 it's the MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle)
Thanks for letting me know!
I know I'm late, but this isn't an MPV. MPV's are equipped with tanks to be used for weedkilling, de-icing, rail head treatment trains, and leaf blowing i believe.
@progenlol I've seen other videos of MPVs and the area where the water tanks usually go is empty
When will the second part of the be on the west coast mainline playlist
It should be on there
Still the best 😉
Been a long time! Hope you're keeping well?
@@Tornado922 I've been okay more or less. Bit of loss-trauma, but that's been the story or so many these past few years.
But I'm always watching, just been incognegro lately 🧐
I'm glad you're still filming, the kit seems to be working well.
Stay safe out there fam' hopefully the operators get some good news from the unions 🤑
I found out that South Western Railway, Transpennine Express, Avanti West Coast, Caledonian Sleeper and Cross Country will end this year (2023).
They'll have their contracts extended I'm sure
When are you doing the yearly trains at Clapham Junction
I was hoping to get it done last year but because of the rail strikes that were taking place it meant that I couldn't get there. I'm hoping that all will be well this year and I will have the chance to get that station done in December
A jafa cake is a cake its in the name!!!
But some sell it as a biscuit, it's the age old question that we will never truly get the answer to!
Petition for tornado to dedicate a whole video to biscuits
I could get behind this idea!
4:48 interesting
4:52, 5:07 Liverpool vs Manchester lol
How’s your year been?
So far it's been rather enjoyable
@@Tornado922 same for me
But it does make your videos buddy
That's very kind of you to say
2:41 - 3:27 were you bored there
I was just chatting away quite happily to myself haha
Your still as nuts buddy from Alan in Lowestoft buddy
I do try!
