- A Superb afternoon/evening session spent at Nuneaton on the West Coast Mainline where we see no end of services from London Northwestern Railway, West Midlands Railway, Cross Country, Avanti West Coast and an incredible amount of freight from Freightliner, GBRF, DB Cargo UK and Colas Rail.
The station also lines up alongside the Peterborough-Leicester-Birmingham Railway which means that plenty of traffic is always seen here throughout any time of the day. This wasn't the first station to be built here, the original station was built and opened in 1847 when the London & Northwestern Railway opened the Trent Valley Route and the branch line to Coventry. When the station was built it was done in a simple 2 platform approach and at the time was deemed suitable, however when the 1870's came knocking at the door it was highly unsuitable because of the sheer volume of traffic coming through the station in terms of passengers and freight. So in 1873 the station was rebuilt and was given additional platforms to cope with the high demand which seemed to work. The current station dates back to 1915.
A second station at Nuneaton was opened in 1864 by the Midland Railway, this station purely served traffic running on the line from Birmingham to Leicester. When the Midland Railway and London & Northwestern Railway were amalgamated into the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1924 both stations were give different names because of the routes that they served. The station on the WCML was renamed Nuneaton Trent Valley and the station serving the smaller route was called Nuneaton Abbey Street.
Abbey Street station was closed in 1968 which meant that Nuneaton Trent Valley was renamed to just Nuneaton. This for the time being would also deal with the Birmingham to Leicester traffic along with the WCML traffic. The Coventry to Nuneaton line was also closed to passenger traffic in 1965 and was eventually reopened in 1988.
Many years had passed before anymore work was done to the station. This eventually happened in 2004 when Network Rail opened 2 new platforms at Nuneaton numbered 6 and 7, these new platforms would now purely serve the Cross Country trains running to and from Birmingham. This was done to avoid trains on the WCML being held up and delayed, because of this a disused flyover was brought back into life and rejuvenated which would carry the line from platforms 6/7 over the WCML and on towards Birmingham.
The next piece of work to take place was done in 2012 when the North Chord was opened which allowed freight trains approaching Nuneaton from Felixstowe to join the WCML heading north which at the same time would avoid delaying any trains heading south. The result of all of this would be that the trains are now able to seamlessly cross between the two lines without ever holding anything up. The exception to this would be any freight trains coming from the North of the country along the WCML needing to cross over at the junction to the north of Nuneaton to then travel down the Nuneaton to Coventry branch line which means that some Intercity trains will have to slow down. Although this is usually put into the timetable so the affects are very minimalistic.
This has to be one of the best visit's I've had on my trips to Nuneaton over the years, the amount of freight that I caught right from the word go was just incredible.
My next rush hour film will be from Stevenage on the East Coast Mainline.

My dad lives right next to the station just a bit further up before the bridge and the noise that 70 makes every day passing his house is hellfire
I absolutely love the sound of the 70s then they are on full chat and when they are pulling away
I love your long-format videos with diverse trains. This was terrific!
Thanks very much!
Another awesome video, love the speed of freight train and that Freightliner class 90 horn sounds incredible 🍺👍
Thank you kindly!!
20:01 might be the fastest Voyager I’ve ever seen lmao. Looked faster than the pendolinos!
It was certainly going for it lol
Another brilliant rush hour video! I really enjoyed this :)
Thanks very much
Superb content and commentary as usual.
Nuneaton seems pretty busy for freight too.
Great video
Thanks very much
Owwwww! You missed out West Midlands railway
Nah in all seriousness awesome video as always. You spoil us
I've gotta keep you on your toes somehow haha ;)
I'm glad you enjoyed watching this
One of your best videos. Given that Nuneaton is a big junction station it's surprising Avanti don't stop there during the off peak.
Thank you kindly
20:01
Great video tornado pretty of variety trains keep up good work
Thanks very much
cracking place is nuneaton if you want freight this is deffo the place to go 😃
Another great video with all the freight, I hope the heat does not mess you up or the tracks.
Thanks very much, the heat was causing issues all over the country
only XC's 6 former 2-car 170/5s were lengthened to 3-car 170/6s in 2021 (using the centre cars from WMR's 6 former 170/6s which are now 170/5s) - XC's 7 2-car 170/1s remain as 2-cars.
Aye mate
Great video at the Nuneaton plenty of freight I like the horn from the 90
Thanks very much bud, the 90s sounded incredible as they passed through
Nuneaton is a very good station for freight traffic running around on the WCML it's amazing
This was an incredible time to come here
By the way your coverage and commentary is a joy
that's very kind of you to say
Nuneaton is great! The disruption made things interesting lol.
Sometimes disruption can be a god send on here haha
Awesome
Thanks very much
Brilliant video tornado I was watching your videos
Thanks very much bud
Hi Tornado922. Great rush hour film at Nuneaton. Correct information for you: at 17:35, it was 390003 working the Manchester-London service, at 25:53, it was 390001 working another Manchester-London service, at 38:09, it was indeed 390008 working the Liverpool-London service, at 41:38, it was indeed 221106 working the London-Bangor service, at 48:10, it was indeed 325007 in the middle of the 3-car Royal Mail train and at 1:18:45, it was 390016 working the Liverpool-London service. Loved all the tones that the relevant trains gave throughout the film and also enjoyed seeing the amount of clag that 70015 gave at 18:33 for good measure. I travelled 1st Class on a Cross Country 170 once, and I hated it. I don't see the point of it being included either. In the whole 1 hour and 21 minutes of filming, you said "Manchester" a whopping 31 times! That has to be a record because I can't see anyone topping that anytime soon. Looking forward to next rush hour film at Stevenage. Kind regards, Chris.
Shut up
Thanks ever so much for the added information bud, I don't think anyone will get close to saying Manchester more than me haha
Listening to that 70 with a decent pair of headphones is not advisable
@@Tornado922 unless they were just saying Manchester repeatedly for no reason
Awesome video buddy from Alan Shelley in Lowestoft
Thanks very much bud
The class 221s where actually going to Wrexham general and Holyhead
Should rename this video to the 1/06/2022 trains at Nuneaton and the day the WCML broke
thats a good one 😂
Good title!
I've been to nuneaton afew times its great station if you want freight trains and there are quite a few different trains that run through
The rush hour period is always amazing at this station
#class 90,s and the other good one's
Excellent station to visit judging by your upload, I have only changed trains there. Lots of freight, which is always enjoyed and some varied passenger fare.
As my home town the train station is good to visit just don't leave the station as the rest of the town is a dump
This is a great station to come to
Tornado "Now coming in is unit 248"
Me "Who do we appreciate" 🤣🤣🤣 i'm here all week people!
How much do you charge XD
@@Tornado922 Not a lot the material isn't that good.. Like a pair sports direct jogging bottoms... by the way as you can Nuneaton is my home town.. Next time your here gis a shout... I'm sure you will be entertaintained for hours.. Wind me up i'll go for hours.. put caffine in me i'm worse.. Like the the gremlins that you shouldn't feed after midnight. 🤣🤣
Manchester Piccadilly! It's everyone's favourite isn't it? That's probably the best rush hour film I've seen from you and at this stage I don't think anything can top it, more particularly so with the incredible amount of freight! You also forgot to put Royal Mail in the description box! 221101 is the white 221 with the Avanti West Coast liveried ends on it. It used to have the old Virgin Trains livery, then it was repainted into the new Virgin Trains livery, then it was plain white before having the Avanti West Coast liveried ends put on. The black paint on either side of the cab window which it had when it had the new Virgin Trains Livery was eventually repainted back to the yellow colour when it was plain white but not straight away. It used to be 399045, formerly 'Virgin Valiant' and 'Virgin Pride' as '101 Squadron' but that name was then given to 221101, formerly named 'Louis Bleriot'. I don't know why 221101 wasn't given the '101 Squadron' name in the first place! It certainly should have been given it straight away that's for sure!
@TrainFan Including Tornado922? Isn't that right sir?
20:01 is one of the fastest voyagers I have ever seen
Great railway video Tornado922
Thanks very much bud
Those 90's had such an American sounding tone, what a noise
Those 90s sounded absolutely incredible as they came screaming through the station. So glad I caught that horn
Why isn't this is in the playlist of the west coast mainline
Hi Jarred I saw you at the Milton Keynes Model Railway Society in Wolverton Mill Last Saturday.
Yes I saw you too
Those 90s made Nuneaton sound like your in the 60s sounding like a steam loco! and the 221s Only ever service Wales (Shrewsbury, Chester, Wrexham & Holyhead) or Glasgow they don't run on any other routes so I presume it was a Chester Bound service! :)
They also do the Edinburgh service as well, at times
@@conallplatts5244 ah yeh true forgot they sign EDB runs
Shrewsbury hasn't been in Wales since 1536.
Wow
Gotta love a class 70
Definitely
Nice video
Thanks very much
We would be lucky to have 7 freight wagons in the train
So you only get short freight trains?
I believe those voyagers were on a diverted service from London Euston to Edinburgh Waverley
I would have to believe you there, at the time of filming there was nothing showing up that I could match up to the service
Ah yes nuneaton my home town
It's a great station to come to
Hi, what train tracking app do you use
I use Realtime Trains for all of my information
From The Rush Hour Period. Its Common To See Two 350s Paired Up
You usually find 350s paired up all day on most routes
@@Tornado922 Yeah During This Time
I think 66550 was running a late 4M63 Felixstowe - Trafford Park
I would have to believe you on that one
Big thumbs up for this! Quick question - why do you call out the train number? I was a 70's / 80's kid and I remember my dad buying me a book with all the current engines in use at that time in it, along with their numbers for you to collect or mark off when you spot them. Does this still happen and is that why you call out the numbers?
Thank you kindly!! The reason I call out numbers is for everyone who watches my films. Some people who watch my content aren't as fortunate as I am to be able to travel around the country and see different trains. Also for some of the international viewers that I have on my channel so they can get accustomed to some of the rolling stock that runs around the country. There are some books that you can get
@@Tornado922 Thanks for replying. I do sort of wish there was an online way to record what trains you see, almost like a central website where you have an account and record numbers etc. Would keep it all in one tidy place.
You got lucky with the freight since you barely see any within 10 minutes or maybe even half an hour
Nuneaton or infact any station on the southern section of the WCML can be a right gold mine for all of the traffic. This day was one such day when everything fell into place rather nicely for me
Do you have to pay for the. Real train times?
No it's free
Do the train companies get a fine for being late?
I don’t think so
You are still mad but I like that bro
I do have my moments haha
24:51 I think it's only the XC 170/5s that have been upgraded to 3 cars , and have been reclassified as 170/6s. The /1s should be staying the same though (feel free to correct me if wrong)
I was always under the impression that the entire XC Turbostar fleet was upgraded to 3 car sets
@@Tornado922 why? only XC's 6 former 2-car 170/5s were lengthened to 3-car 170/6s in 2021 (using the centre cars from WMR's 6 former 170/6s which are now 170/5s) - XC's 7 2-car 170/1s remain as 2-cars. where are you expecting them to get another 7 centre cars from?
@@RWL2012 well given the routes they operate the and passenger numbers they carry it would make sense to bolster the capacity. Its always staggered me that they run such short trains on their busiest routes. That's why. And further more according to their social media I was always under the belief that they were upgrading the whole fleet.
@@Tornado922 I'm sure XC would love to get another 7 170 centre cars, but I doubt that the operators of those 7 3-car 170s (EMR, Northern, ScotRail etc) would want them to be reduced down to 2-cars, unlike WMR who acquired the rest of the 172s and will be getting rid of their 170s once the 196s are in service anyway, so didn't mind XC getting their 6 centre cars.
There are rumours that XC will get the AWC 221s or EMR 222s once the Hitachis are in service, which could also mean they could put some Voyagers on some of the 170 services, which would allow them to double up more 170s on the remaining ones.
By the way, I've been watching your videos a lot lately and they're really good. Thanks for the reply btw.
@@RWL2012 aye lol where
Nooo its 66601 not 66501
can u do Newcastle at some point this year?
At some stage this year I will
How do you know where they are going?
Hi Steve. On Real Time Trains, it says all the information regarding each train, so Tornado922 then knows where they are going.
#tornado922 #nuneaton
Avanti trains seem to always be delayed hmm
They are struggling lately
Oh just heard it real time trains…
Must be an app, exact name?
