  • This Toyota 3.0 liter V6 1MZ-FE is in some of the most popular cars of its decade including Lexus RX300 and ES300, Toyota Camry, Highlander, Sienna, and Avalon. A close variant, the 3.3-liter 3MZ-FE, is in the same Toyota models plus Lexus RX330 and ES330. Re-setting the timing belt is straightforward thanks to the timing marks provided on the belt and the ease of aligning the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets and pulleys. The timing marks on the camshaft pulleys and the rear timing cover, and the timing marks on the block and crankshaft pulley are shown in detail. There is a difference in the configuration of the tensioner and tensioner pulley between certain models. This is covered in another video. It does not affect setting the timing marks.

A dealer in Chicago Heights, once just changed the timing belt on my Toyota Celica GTS. They did not change the idler bearing/tensioner. There was a LOUD bearing noise but they made me believe it was normal. Months later the beaaring seized and snap went the belt. I would like the Aisin Kit number... researching now. The painted marks on the belt end up in a different place because the number of teeth on the belt is not an exact multiple of the number of teeth on the crank (n) or the cams (2n). I don't have time to give a full calculation, but if you make 26 revolutions the paint marks should return to their original position.

Have to inquire if anything else was done when the timing belt was changed, and ask how would that affect spark, fuel, or compression. Check the EFI fuse and the IG2 fuse and any other fuses in the engine compartment. Does the vehicle have an immobilizer? Make sure you are using the transponder key. And of course pull back the top timing cover and check the the timing mark on the camshaft pulley lines up with the cover when cylinder 1 is at TDC. Use the timing notch on the harmonic balancer and the degree indicator on the block to line it up.

If you have the 3.0 you can turn it any way you want, it is a non interference engine. The 3.3 is an interference engine. To be safe you must turn the crankshaft 60 degrees counterclockwise from dtc. Then you can turn the cams freely.

Great work no non sense and to the point. Thank you! I am replacing engine in 1999 Solara SLE with one from auto salvage yard with only 74,000 miles on it was in a front end collision. 2 questions... Should I replace timing belt now or wait and see how engine performs for another 20,000 miles? Also Engine is very clean and no metal in oil pan at all. No major signs of sludge yet I drilled out rivets on baffles in both valve covers to completely clean out carbon that was accumulating inside. Drain ports were not plugged but very surprised at amount of crud inside the baffles. Am aware can get updated RH rear valve cover but do not want to spend $200 to $300 for it. Can I modify baffles by drilling additional holes for improved flow or should I just tap and screw baffles back in place with Lock tite and just rely on frequent oil changes to avoid potential of build up in valve cover baffles. I have a 2000 Sienna with 1MZ-FE that I purchased new and did frequent oil changes and maintained quite well and has 467,000 mainly highway miles on it so looking to get extended miles out of this replacement engine for this Solara project.

Sounds like you are comfortable with tinkering and have the time for it. If so you can do and spend the least up front and deal with issues as they arise later. This is not my philosophy. I take care of everything up front, so I don't have to go back in again. On replacement engines I do timing belt and components plus waterpump, front and rear seals, knock sensors and harness, bypass hose in the valley, and ignition coils on the rear bank.

Merryfrankster: is the 3.3L 3mz-fe an interference or non- interference engine? I viewed your video from 2 years ago where you showed the 3L1MZ-FE is a non-interference engine and you indicated you'd do a similar video on the 3.3L mz-fe, but I couldn't find it on your channel. Thanks!

    • @Merryfrankster_

If we go by the factory service manual and their recommended procedure for changing the timing belt, which requires turning the crankshaft away from tdc while turning the camshafts, to avoid any valve to piston contact, then we must conclude that the 3mz is an interference engine. In practice, I believe that the manual authors were on crack or the specification of the cams or pistons was changed after the book was written and no revision was made. I take no responsibility for any weirdness with the 3mz.

@@dbmn7571 The answer is I don't know. The factory service manual implies the 3mz-fe is an interference engine, but in practice I have never seen a 3mz-fe with bent valves. But the factory service manual directs that you must avoid valve to piston contact when turning the camshafts. So I am just as confused as you are.

    • @Merryfrankster_

How can I check my timing belt to see if the belt marks line up with timing marks how many times do I need to turn crank in order to get everything to line back up as if I reinstalled new one so I can diagnose this problem

    • @Merryfrankster_

most likely issue with the vvt solenoid, or the camshaft position sensor, or the wiring. What is the specific dtc. Timing belt issue not likely. But if you want to check, take off the belts, then the timing covers, and the marks on the belt don't matter - look for the marks on the sprockets/pulleys - like in this video. Marks on the camshaft pulleys align with the back of the timing cover. Mark on the crankshaft sprocket aligns with the oil pump. See it on the video.
