    The dots are backwards isn't it bank 1 1 dot bank 2 2 dots and the split gear needs to be pre.tensioned.

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  Год назад

      They were installed as shown, and it works, so I don't think it's backward, and the pre-tension with the service bolt is shown in this video and also in more detail in another video.

    I had to replace a burn exhaust valve on cylinder #4 on my wife's 1999 Lexus RX300 with this 1MZFE engine and did a novice booboo. I tilted the head over and all the shim buckets fell out and I lost the locations. Any recommendation for re-assembly? I was thinking of first placing the exhaust cam in place and use a feeler gauge and then mic the buckets.

    If i removed the camshaft with the wrong dot marks together (180 degrees from where i should have) should i install at the normal installation position or should i install the way i took them out?

    • @charlesmaki7559
      @charlesmaki7559 6 месяцев назад

      This on camshaft no.3 and no.4 by the way. I took out the camshafts at the two dots instead of single dots lined up (3FE-MZ). So all the valves are decompressed now. I figured when i reinstall, i just go ahead and reinstall the way the manual says to reinstall since all the valves are decompressed now

    • @Merryfrankster_

      @@charlesmaki7559 Correct just follow the manual and don't forget about the service bolt for the cam spring.

    So the back set of camshaft have one dot and two dots the service manual says line up the 2dots for the rear camshaft and the 1dot for the front camshaft. Issue I’m having is that the timing mark on the back camshaft isn’t aligned with the mark on the timing cover when the two dots on the back camshaft are together.
    Should I just go ahead with the manuals recommendation or try to set the time with the marks

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  9 месяцев назад

      I'm not sure what you got going on there. Follow the manual for aligning the gears with the camshafts. Then after the head is reassembled you take care of the timing marks.

  • @jpalacess4735
    @jpalacess4735 Год назад

    before i remove my camshaft would be a good idea to mark em before removing so i can put them back on same way after i resurface the cylinder heads or it really doesn’t matter

      The camshafts have timing marks for aligning the exhaust cam and the intake cam on each head. PLEASE LOOK AT THE FACTORY SERVICE MANAUL.

    Are there valve clearance measurements to make and correct with shims?

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  11 дней назад

      Yes the buckets are shimmed. This is why, if you watch my head gasket video, I number the buckets and put them back in the same order. Unless your engine was making a valve clatter noise, you do not need to re-shim.

    • @michaelmcfeely6588
      @michaelmcfeely6588 11 дней назад

      @@Merryfrankster_ In the recommended scheduled maintenance booklet, does Toyota say anything about checking valve clearances after, say, 100k miles?

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  11 дней назад

      @@michaelmcfeely6588 the service manual describes the valve clearance procedure in the engine overhaul section. If you are disassembling the engine, then do it. If you are under the valve covers and you see signs of cam wipe, then do it. If you hear valve clatter, then do it. If you want your engine to last 1 million miles (ha ha), then do it. If you are some kind of OCD perfectionist, then do it. Otherwise, if it ain't broke, why fix it.

    So this says nothing about the other head i can only get the cams too align by doing 2 dots to 2 dots is this because the head is set tdc on the other head so its the other way around for the head at the back?

    what is the service bolt for?

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  Год назад +2

      there is a spiral spring that pushes the two halves of the gear in opposition - it must be pre-loaded and the two halves are held in position by the service bolt. After the gear meshes with the opposing gear, the service bolt can be removed.
