Also drones was apparently where they got their respect back because people were happy when that came back. Also without drones we wouldn’t have murph, and that would be just sad to not have him lol.
As someone who loves this album, watching you shit on it for 30 minutes was genuinely a lot of fun lol. My enjoyment of Muse represents my ability to just like things because I like them, no matter whether or not they are objectively bad or not. Muse clearly did something right with the album though, since a lot of people in the comments are defending it. Loved watching this, man.
I think this album is objectively bad, but I don't care and I still love it because "objectively bad or good" doesn't mean a lot of things when we're talking about art.
Muse is one of those bands whose music has always straddled a line where, if certain elements became more prominent, it would go from enjoyable to shit in the blink of an eye. The blown out melodrama can be fun if you buy into it, but there always has to be something else, whether it be good dynamics or progressions or just *something* to counteract the negative effects of being so overly theatrical. This album doesn't really have that most of the time, so it comes across as having the worst aspects of Muse's style.
@@kingyoshi3297 Typically grand and anthemic, very straightforward power rock with strong theatrics. Someone else used the term "space rock" and I think that's very apt as much of their work would fit right into the soundtrack for an epic space adventure series. @@danielblair2684 Space rock is already a genre and I wouldn't consider Muse a part of it at all. They're too poppy for that. To me they're a britpop band with shades of prog.
Muse is my favourite band of all time, ever since i was a kid. i'll always listen to their new stuff and give it a chance, even if it doesnt end up being for me. everything up until resistance is what id call "the golden age" with the 2nd law being the begining of the end of my favourite songs they put out, with each album having some decent tracks here and there but the album overall not being my vibe. no matter what though, theyre ALWAYS kickass in concert. I can't wait to see it. having said that, LETS ROAST THIS THING
You need to revisit Origin of Symmetry if you think it’s mid. New Born, Bliss, Plug in Baby, Space Dementia, Citizen Erased, Megalomania, and Futurism are all phenomenal tracks. Hyper Music and Screenager are weaker than the rest on the album, but even the weakest tracks on OoS are still some of the best Muse has ever put out. Ask anyone their thoughts on Origin of Symmetry, and 99% of people will say it’s at least 8 or 9/10

@@puffballbk2186 there's no problem with that, people make fun of another band I like, Deftones, too and I don't complain about that ever but the difference is that Radiohead fans tend to be really pretentious, even more annoying when it combines with their incessant need to be constantly self deprecating. And like I said I really like Radiohead but the whole retarded feud between the two all because Muse's first ever album sounded just a little Radiohead inspired is so grating to hear every time it rears it's head. it's rare that i say 'yea but this shit camp af' but if this isn't camp and muse doubling down on everything in the last decade that has driven those who cared about the band to madness then idk what is. like it's very intentional, there's a matt bellamy tweet (which may have been faked) where he says 'every time someone complains about us not doinig hard rock music i buy another synthesiser wub wub fuckers' and i really do respect that ngl. this man doesn't give a shit and neither do the other two and they're just doing what they enjoy which like. is the goal of music imo
That Tweet was faked, but he definitely just wants to do what he wants, he does it for people who enjoy it and what he enjoys. It isn't something to be taken too seriously.
Go listen to Royal Blood's Typhoons if you want a fun danceable rock album, yeah it's kinda hard car commercial vibes but Mike is a much much more bearable lyricist and vocalist, and the blend of hard rock and disco works really well with the simple bass guitar/drums pairing
Accurate take. Royal Blood lyrics have never been great but I guess they’re better than most of this album, and they fused the disco and rock thing better.
Typhoons and WotP should not even be mentioned in the same sentence, even though Typhoons is kinda mid for me even as a RB enjoyer, this dogshit by Muse is just unlistenable cause of how boring it is
At the same time it could easily be interpreted as some bullshit left wing narrative that the lead singer doesn’t even get. Like I’m a trans NB so don’t think I’m hating on libs but my problem is that anyone could listen to this and use it to justify their beliefs. Somehow that’s even worse than being right-wing.
As a Muse fan I didn't really liked that album, but i don't hate it either. The impresion it gave me is that they tried to make a bigger concept album like Drones but something happened and they said: "yeah, okay okay, this sounds good, throw it in". It's their shortest album in lenght and they even put a bad Ghost rip-off halloween song for no reason just to fill some space
What is sad and true is that the worse they get, the richer they get. When they were making incredible music, they were still underground. They know exactly what they are doing and they don't care, so really, their motive is to cash grab. Coldplay did exactly the same thing first, so I think Muse figured out what works and followed suit. The band could make another Origin of Symmetry but they know the path now, get trendy. And really, the only rock bands of the last 20 or 30 years that are still successful, got trendy, like Greenday, or Weezer or whatever else. I could keep going all day.
This album seemed like the most generic, uninspired crap from what I've heard in this video and read about the lyrics. And then 18:42 comes outta nowhere with just the cheesiest Halloween-themed synth song I've ever heard, and I start immediately laughing.
I have to say I love this vid-you're really comedic, have a style. Like a bit ranty and broey vibes but entertaining and mean that in the best, most fun way. Because you are also genuinely one of the most respectful youtubers I've seen, consistently calling out on bigotted shit, calling for respect to fans of that you critique, etc (as trans autistic, it's real meaningful). Want to make sure you know that. I decide I'll give my thoughts on this album. One thing I think is that most I see review it come from a mainly rock/hip hop/pop background. I come from an electronic and metal background, which means my general background, vibe, and the 'appeal of music' is different. Most I see review don't dig 'all in' those genres. Muse always stood out in the way they do this high energy dramatic space orchestral type sound which I sincerely can't think of one alike, hence why they were some of my favorites for a while (if anyone has any other names, I will LOVE to hear them). When I try to go to 'similar artists' on Spotify, like I NEVER got Radiohead comparisons, who seemed way soft for me at the time, not enough oomph. No one really did Muse's music. Not even the term space rock is remotely close. Now, I've been greatly expanding my musical library. Listening to The Strokes, The Killers, Radiohead, Franz Ferdinand, rap and pop and jazz stuff too... When I now listen to their golden trio album (OoS, Absolution, BH&R) I do hear now the details in the rock music and can see some layer of comparison and getting into seeing 'as rock' how it stands up. Oddly enough, this makes me dig some later stuff now: Simulation Theory, The Resistance, 2nd Law... even Drones deserves another whirl because I like that energy. The way I see it then is if thats not a positive, then whatever work on synths or effective anthems or riffs will just feel overblown and so now well the well tied 'rock' aesthetics here removed in comparison to past albums, will make it just feel awful. And I on the other hand, coming from literal metal and electronic without hearing a lyric, is very bad at detecting, hearing, and hence giving a shit on lyrics (I'm working on this) This album I don't think was the worst thing in the world. It's worth noting the label asked for best hits album, Muse said no. Decided to try a new album to give new songs trying to one up their hits. So, this kind of is a hodge podge of 'emulations' of their hits of different styles. Now, I do have my issues: the production feels bad, something feels 'missing', cheaper sounding electronics, lacking thematics. Questionable lyrics. But thats like a loss in comparison to their original sound which, I mention, has a very strong unique appeal. I think in terms of choice melody, anthem choruses, song development, intricacy of scales, some cool electronic rock/metal interplay, a lot of it isn't too far off for what one comes to expect from Muse so I find it enjoyable in its own way.
What band gets LESS experimental as they go on? I'm pretty sure Matt's pulling an Adam Sandler on us. Having said that I saw these tracks performed live and I loved it 😂
I love the tangent of Brad reading the """""""critics"""""""""" 's opinions because none of them mean nothing. "Even for muse, this is an album of extremes". That means absolutely nothing. Just word fillers and buzzwords to sound intelligent.
I just listened to this today. Thoughts: some of the subject matter is very apt for the current situation we find ourselves in politically. There is never any doubt that Muse are very good at what they do, but this album feels very theatrical in parts, by which I don't mean like Queen (though theres plenty of that influence) but in parts it sounds like someones written a musical about revolution and it reminds me a bit of that muppet vampire musical jason segels character writes in forgetting sarah marshall. I think I'm just a bit concerned that some of the songs are cheesy enough, and the lyrics on the nose enough that it tips them over into a bit of a pastiche of themselves, you know? Like it's only one step away from being a Muse parody album.
I think i heard somewhere that theyre trying to parody themselves that this point. But take that with a grain of salt. If they are they are failing completely. Nobody gets it.
This album is amazing, the mixing is awesome and liberation with the queen vibes is 👌 And Verona, so good. No more words needed. Btw I'm wondering what did muse do to hurt you cuz ur reaction definitely isn't something from even the most critical person
@Rob Marshall I think more what I mean is this album is gonna get a low score than Simulation Theory. To me this sounds much closer to imagine dragons and very very arena rock style songs we’ve heard before. Ok we’ll check back after melon reviews I have him at a 4 for this and you got him for a 5
I always was under the impression that Muse fans were very divided, like half of them hate the direction the band has been going in for like a decade now, maybe that’s changed lol
@NothingElsecool I feel the issue with this album is not only the superficial production and parts in songs that shouldn't be there, but also the fact that the whole album just feels like Muse aimlessly pointing their finger in the air. I understand they were just creating a fictional narrative in this album like a lot of their music, but the lyrics and material are just way too vague. It would've been better if they instead created a fictional antagonist to represent who are what they feel is incorrect in this album and not "grrr let's overthrow the corrupt system I wanna be RATM so bad rahhh".
@NothingElsecool I can agree with that, WOTP may have some bad mixing and cringe parts, but at least they have some good riffs. Father of All is just... terrible. At the time of me commenting this, father of all was the only example I could think of, but it's almost becoming a phenomenon with a lot of 2000s bands releasing an album now in which they make a really superficial version of their glory days' music while trying to relive them. It's just sad atp.
I agree that WotP is really disappointing aside from Verona and KobK, but holy shit saying Origin of Symmetry is a 6/10 is such a delusional take. OoS is easily 8/10 bare minimum, by any metric, and Absolution and BH&R are all also definitely more than 6/10. Back to OoS though, it literally has 0 weak tracks aside from MAYBE Screenager, but even that song has its moments and its uniqueness.
8:50 what's the worst thing about the metacritic reviews is that the worst one (a 37 from Pitchfork) the critic says the album gets worse as it goes on instead of getting better Also these lyrics are like the music equivalent of a YA dystopian novel
I see Muse in a smiliar way to Weezer, where it's not objectively the best music in the world, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for either. The more fun, unhinged and out-there the better, and i honestly just think tracks like WOTP and YMMFLIH are goofy in a good way
Feel like the album will grow on a lot of people. I don't know if Brad thinks he isn't aloud to like cheesy parts in music because it doesn't fit with his edgy persona or what, it's a bit weird. Not every song is made to be a hit, deep cuts end up being favourites. I was a bit uninterested after first listen but absolutely open to some of the later tracks growing on me.
he doesn't have an edgy persona. he has an adult's perspective and has been a fan of many types of music for a long time. it's just his opinion, but frankly i agree with it
There's a difference between using cheesy sounds or tropes of a genre and using them in a new or entertaining way, or subverting expectations, or even just executing them well - and just fucking beating a dead horse like Muse is at this point in their career with the instrumentals and writing, and especially Bellamy's singing on most of the shit off their new releases. "I don't know if Brad thinks he isn't aloud to like cheesy parts in music because it doesn't fit with his edgy persona or what, it's a bit weird." cope, shit's cheesy to people for a reason, half of the album literally sounds like music for a power tool or new Dodge ad.
@@Speedojesus I dunno man, I've been watching Brad for a while and honestly it does feel like he just has a reaction because he feels he's supposed to. Few years ago I went back and tried to go through some of their older stuff just cause I like revisiting things that don't make it in regular rotation for me. Just... nothing hit. And like, I still have Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Interpols stuff in my playlist pretty regularly. Muse now feels somehow... outdated for their era even
Yeah, muse can be cheesy. Yeah, muse goes in a ton of directions and explores beyond what might make them be taken seriously. Yeah muse might make songs with poor choices of mixing, writing, and structure. But tell me honestly: if you just enjoy rock music, and you are lighthearted (aka not thinking if something isn’t cool or a little embarrassing when listening to music), is muse not the most FUN thing to listen to??? It’s catchy, and all over the place at the same time, and I feel like to some that’s a bad combination, but to me it’s a really good one Last thing: as a fan of muse since ‘09 and every album since being a Time Capsule to a part of my childhood/teenage years, I see this “greatest hits compilation but make it ourselves” approach, that Matt confirmed in an interview, to provide a fuck ton of nostalgia to me So to see someone just gloss over this album just makes me think: they don’t get it… and that’s fine, it’s just unfortunate this opinion will automatically become the one of your fans
It’s not fun to me.. it’s just super badly put together and basically.. shit. And to show you I don’t care about being cool, I genuinely dig some creed songs.
I feel like Matt Bellamy's voice is the key factor to someone enjoying muse or not. If you like his very dramatic delivery and you enjoy the "space rock" instrumentation that muse goes for you'll love them. It also helps if you don't care much about lyrics, though they do vary in quality depending on the album. That being said this album did feel a bit too goofy at times, and as much as I enjoyed won't stand down and kill or be killed, it's definitely some of their most unappealing work. Calling Origin of Symmetry a 6/10 is a crime however lol that album is fantastic, and I'm tired of the Radiohead comparisons, both bands went their own ways a long time ago. I enjoy Radiohead but they can't do what Muse has done, their sound is much more introspective and lacks punchiness compared to them. Essentially, there are some Muse albums that I would qualify as hard rock, while I can't do the same for Radiohead

Maybe because it's shallow, empty and has absolutely zero substance. Boring, generic riffs that don't hold a candle to what they were doing on their earlier albums. Writing the most general lyrics in an attempt to appeal to as many people as possible isnt "wacky or zany", it's just lazy and makes for boring music. The message of their last 3 albums is literally just down with the system, with no specifics, no actual points or substance. Every Muse album since 2006 just gets progressively worse.
I just think most non-Muse fans probably have a harder time getting past the silliness since they’re not to aquatinted with Muse and the attitude in their music. As a big Muse fan I could easily let it slide, even enjoying it in some spots, but I definitely can understand how it could be a roadblock for some listeners not acquainted with Muse.
I'm well-acquainted with silliness in music myself but I still thought this album was completely soulless. Might have to do with Bellamy sounding like a dying seagull whenever he comes close to a high note.
Hating everything without thinking just because it's muse is a bit stupid. I know it's not incredible and overproduced but it's still fun sometimes, just relax. It feels like it hurts you to say anything a little nice...also i like the halloween song, it's vert catchy (the clip is great).

Probably the biggest disagreement with your opinion since Mercury Act 1. I thought this album was fun as heck. Not as good as the brilliant run they had in the 2000s but I really enjoyed this personally
I thought this album was a full on 0, because even the tracks where there was a hint of interesting melodicism or a cool riff or I wasn't being assaulted by a cheezy or unpleasant synth texture, it's destroyed either by the production or by Matt's weird delivery or the nothing burger lyrics. Every single hint of a good idea on this thing is massively overshadowed by the issues surrounding them. And I defended simulation theory. I can't believe it somehow got worse.
I think this guy puts in words what my thought were after I listened to this album. Slightly overblown reaction, but that is what you have to as a streamer/blogger, this album is crap. The only point I disagree is I don't think Muse were always crap, first 4 albums were good with some gems. Now every new album makes me think "Oh, so the previous one wasn't the worst".
I'm not gonna lie. I know nothing of music. This is probably why I enjoy all music. So basically I got no taste. I just love music. That being said I can understand why Brad doesn't like it.
Personally I found this album to be a lot of fun. I don't really care about the lyrics and I just care about how it sounds like, and I enjoyed it. Favorite tracks: You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween. It's just a really fun song, I love the synth and organ mix this song has. Least favorite tracks: The Will of the People and We Are Fucking Fucked are very forgettable and I don't want to listen to them ever again.
It's funny to me to check my rock playlist and see only old Muse songs on it. Not to say that Muse's past 4 albums don't have good songs, overall they have been disappointing. The common criticism of Muse doesn't really apply to their older work for me, when you listen to OOS/Absolution/BHaR, they sound like Muse, they pull off the space rock and alt-rock vibes well, the pop-rock songs are good. OOS has so much more inspiration and creative drive behind it than this. It sucks to see a band you like fall, but I'm not sure what I expected. Also funny that no one here is talking about sim theory, which I think was fantastic because we saw levels of production onstage we hadn’t seen for a long while. Also without drones we wouldn’t have murph, and that would be just sad to not have him lol.
As someone who loves this album, watching you shit on it for 30 minutes was genuinely a lot of fun lol.

And I on the other hand, coming from literal metal and electronic without hearing a lyric, is very bad at detecting, hearing, and hence giving a shit on lyrics (I'm working on this)
This album I don't think was the worst thing in the world.

It’s catchy, and all over the place at the same time, and I feel like to some that’s a bad combination, but to me it’s a really good one
Last thing: as a fan of muse since ‘09 and every album since being a Time Capsule to a part of my childhood/teenage years, I see this “greatest hits compilation but make it ourselves” approach, that Matt confirmed in an interview, to provide a fuck ton of nostalgia to me

Maybe because it's shallow, empty and has absolutely zero substance. Boring, generic riffs that don't hold a candle to what they were doing on their earlier albums.
To their credit: they went from truck commercial music to early PS2 soundtrack music toward the end.
Personal, very like this album
But I'm too lazy to write why
Anyway everyone hates it
Personally, I like some songs on this album, but the critic reviews are wilding if they think this is even close to some of their older works lmao
Hating everything without thinking just because it's muse is a bit stupid. I know it's not incredible and overproduced but it's still fun sometimes, just relax.
It feels like it hurts you to say anything a little nice...also i like the halloween song, it's vert catchy (the clip is great).
Just cause you think it's fun doesn't mean everyone else has to think that
@@jrurbbehdidiwdnndjduw85eos73 same, not because some people think it is bad means it is bad, actually it is a pretty good album
@@jrurbbehdidiwdnndjduw85eos73 yes everyone can like and dislike wathever they want, but hating this much and be completly blindfolded like Brad just because it's a specific artist, is sad.
@@lucaslpy5507 personally I believe being biased towards a band or artist isn’t a inherently bad thing. Brad isn’t a Music critic like fantano where people take his opinion as fact and really care about the scores he gives out. Brad just makes videos to have fun. if he doesn’t like muse he shouldn’t have to force himself to try to like the songs. There are just some bands that will never work for some people and that’s fine.
From this comment section I’ve learned that muse fans really need to learn that not everyone likes what they like. Muse doesn’t need you to defend them against the critics they are too busy selling NFTs and destroying the environment to care what a dude on the internet says about them.
If he can't hate it then you can't love it
I can't believe Origin of Symmetry video goes down just like now. I was so happy watching 😢
Probably the biggest disagreement with your opinion since Mercury Act 1. I thought this album was fun as heck. Not as good as the brilliant run they had in the 2000s but I really enjoyed this personally
Yeah Mercury Act 1 was a great return to form for Imagine Dragons, I'd honestly give it the edge over WOTP. Can't say the same about Act 2 though
As a huge Muse fan, I actually thoroughly enjoyed this review. You are entertaining as fuck.
Not gonna lie I love this album. Even the song will of the people. Not sure why I like it. But I just do
My guy got so much flame he changed the title 💀
What is the original title
Bro, the fuckin Halloween song tho 😂😂😂
His initial reaction is the sole reason I revisit this video.
18:40 Here you go lil buddy
saying oos is a 6 is the worst take ive ever heard
It’s worse than fantano saying MDBTF is a 6
It’s the truth. Nothing they did was new or innovative. It’s been done 5 times better by lesser known bands.
@@MadJackChurchill1312 tell me the names of those bands
@@MadJackChurchill1312 can you point them out
He re-listened to OOS and gave it an 8. Which is more valid.
I'm not gonna lie. I know nothing of music. This is probably why I enjoy all music.
So basically I got no taste. I just love music.
That being said I can understand why Brad doesn't like it.
Ironic how an album against corporations and governments sounds like the most corporate shit ever.
Damn, I wish i could forget the title track…
It doesn't sound good...
@@strikerbowls791 I forgot that music is objective.
I disagree. Liberation is the worst and it's not even close
LMAO Tony got your back with the NOT GOOD
I don't know what is funnier, this record, or your reaction to it.
I love that Brad came back to listen to this album even tho he knew he was gonna hate it. I love the effort put into analysis
Brad still gets the L though because apparently he rated OOS 6/10, have you no shame?
