    ABOUT:
    Today we will be talking about cropping, sharpening and exporting high quality photos for INSTAGRAM with Capture One Pro 20. I will cover the CROP TOOL - how to save your own preset for a specific ratio. Next I will show you how to create and save your own PROOF RECIPE and how to OPTIMIZE SHARPENING for a specific size. Once the image is set and PROOF is done, we will EXPORT a physical file (JPG) to our hard drive. Last step - publish to INSTAGRAM and enjoy! :)
    In this video I'l show the workflow for publishing INSTAGRAM, but the formula can be easily replicated for any social media - FACEBOOK, TWITTER, TIK TOK. All you need are the required dimensions for particular social media.

    hey ho thx for your great tipps. I learned a lot. :)
    ONE QUESTION :) I made my own frames in gimp. Saved it as png and import it in CAP1 as a watermark. It works perfect for me. I have e.g. 2 photos. photo1 is croped different than photo2. When I set the position of my frame in process recipe for photo1 it will effect photo2 too. I dont want that :D
    Is there a way to LOCK the position of the frame (watermark) for each photo, so that it has no effect on the other photos?
    best regards Micha :)

    • @KasiaZmokla
      @KasiaZmokla  3 года назад +1

      Hi Micha, thank you! Regarding the watermark - I don't know of such a functionality as locking the watermark for each photo. If you want to have the watermark (frame) fitted to a specific ratio (crop) I'd suggest creating separate process recipes for every aspect ratio.

    So when you save the file and send the phone over to your iPhone or iPad for uploading from your Mac. Is there any compression applied. Or are you using a piece of software like Flume to publish?

    • @KasiaZmokla
      @KasiaZmokla  3 года назад +1

      Hi Brian, my IG workflow looks like that: edit an image in C1 > proof and export a JPG with process recipe (here I typically go with 80% JPG quality, so it compresses the file and I maintain control over the result) > publish the JPG to IG from my desktop ( I use an app called Later to do this)
      Surely IG applies a compression, but by uploading exact size and already compressed file (that 80% JPG quality setting) I'm getting good results, since there is not much to adjust by IG algorithm. At least that's how I see it. My logic behind it is that if I was uploading large files, not resized for IG, then their algorithm would run the compression and resizing automatically. Doing my part I have more control over the final result. Hope that helps :)

    Quick question, when you crop the image your display only shows the cropped part. Mine always shows full image with the crop as a mask as soon as I click the crop icon. Hi Stan, thank you, glad you enjoy my videos! You can control the opacity of mask for cropping here: Capture One > Preferences > Crop > Opacity
      If you want fully opaque mask, set Opacity to 100%. With Brightness you can set the brightness of the mask 100% Black - 100% White. Hope that helps!

    Kasla, what is the best setting to exporting your pictures for print? Thanks in advance.

    • @KasiaZmokla
      @KasiaZmokla  3 года назад

      Hi Richard, it depends on many factors - the printed size, type of paper, inks used. Best would be asking your printer to provide you with their specifications to avoid any guess work. If you are printing yourself, at home it is always great idea to run a "stripe tests" before printing any big size to check how your image looks transferred on paper.

    Great video. I am eager to try out your techniques. I see you use 300 px/in for IG. I thought the recommendation was for 72 pc/in, or no more than 100 px/in, for internet images.

    • @KasiaZmokla
      @KasiaZmokla  3 года назад +2

      Thank you! When you export for digital media the resolution doesn't matter. Setting 300 or 72 will give you the same result and the same file size (KB), since we have fixed dimensions.

    • @KasiaZmokla

      Hi Geoff, no, the crop tool can be applied at any stage. You may for example want to have the image cropped with no intention to output it at all - just to check different options (on different variants).
      If you want to output and apply the crop you have set - just remember selecting the option "respect crop" from the dropdown menu in the Process Recipe > Adjustments > Crop

    Hi Kasia, one question here. I see your point about cropping the image to a 4x5 aspect ratio but I do not understand why you set the width of the image to 1,080px already at this stage. I mean, one thing is aspect ratio and another resolution. As far as I understand it is more than sufficient to set the width of the image within the process recipe but maybe I‘m missing something. Thank you!

    • @KasiaZmokla
      @KasiaZmokla  3 года назад

      Hi Jorg, 1080px is the recommended width for IG export (help.instagram.com/1631821640426723). I've made a specific process recipe in advance for IG portrait and the recipe we selected while cropping. The crop tool will always respect specific settings from SELECTED recipe.

    • @jorghahn2903
      @jorghahn2903 3 года назад

      @@KasiaZmokla Well, I was just wondering why you created a specific IG crop ratio within the crop tool. I understand that even if you do not crop your image but then apply a process recipe which sets the width to a maximum of 1,080px then Capture One will apply this maximum width upon exporting the image anyway. Thank you in any case for responding!

    • @KasiaZmokla
      @KasiaZmokla  3 года назад +1

      @@jorghahn2903 The image ratio differs - the frames from my camera have different ratio (proportion width to height) in comparison with the IG. It is not only about scaling down the image (by reducing the size value for width). I need to take decision which parts of the image will be cropped out, since the original ratio gives way "taller" rectangle. I don't want it to happen automatically, in such a case I might end up with let's say my subject's head cropped off the frame :D IG ratio is closer to a rectangle and it forces me to make the crop. There is a possibility of publishing images at their original ratio on IG, this requires creating white borders around the image, in order to fill in the given IG size.

    • @jorghahn2903
      @jorghahn2903 3 года назад

      @@KasiaZmokla Hi Kasia, I fully agree on cropping but what I wanted to say / ask is if one might also just set the aspect ratio to 4x5 (instead of using the pixel values, ie 1,080 x 1,350). My apologies but I guess that my question was not really clear.

    • @KasiaZmokla
      @KasiaZmokla  3 года назад +1

      @@jorghahn2903 No worries, I'm doing a guesswork at this moment too lol. I was saying that if you don't select any recipe, and will be cropping with the prerecorded (by yourself) IG ratio, C1 won't apply the 1080 pixels. I've done a quick test and see that it is pulling the size from selected recipe. So if no recipe selected C1 will apply just the 4x5 ratio, without matching the size.
