    My favorite first part of any teach is theme! Who are you and what are you doing? This leads well into the overall goal and “how to win” and sets the stage nicely for the rest of the teach.
    Shut up and sit down has one of my favorite “how to teach” videos that has helped a lot in structuring it generally, but this is a very helpful one specific to Expeditions.

    I have already played the game twice, and this might be my new favorite game. And everyone that played with me loved it and can't wait to play again.

    I’m yet to teach Expeditions. Maybe this weekend. My plan is to:
    1- go over the theme and how we interact with the theme.
    2- explain how action selection works and the shifting of the token as well as the “hand” and “active” sides of the mech board.
    3- explain that we need to complete objectives to get stars on basecamp, coins are victory points and power and guile are the resources, as well as workers which we’ll gather during the game.
    4- briefly explain all visible tiles, cards and mech powers. Then we’re ready to start.
    All other new icons, keywords, corruption etc.I’d explain as they come up

    I really enjoy how there is so much to do in the game, but each turn is fairly contained, making the turns easier to explain to new players

    My copy just arrived today, and wow I can’t get over the amazing texture of the rule book! I’m not sure if it’s a special feature of the Ironclad Edition, but it’s fantastic Jamey. Excited to start playing!

    Thanks Jamey! These are great tips, I played the game with our 17 y old 1-1, but will soon teach it to my wife and elder daughter in a 4 player’s game.
    BTW, so far so good... We really love the game, the mechanics and feel that there is strong replay value, with the ever-changing map, and the variety of cards! And I love my ironclad edition! The metal mechs feel great and look incredible!
    One thing that was not clear for my wife as I was trying to explain the concept of the game was the attaching cards to the mech. Not being a sci-fi fan, she had a hard time grasping the idea. I used an example she was familiar with: The fantasy hero, wandering and exploring the land and fighting monsters… gaining equipment and completing quest. In Expeditions, the mech is her hero, meteorites and items are its equipment. She understood the comparison and was quick to dive into the Scythe fantasy once this was clarified.

    thanks, Jamey! I watched this yesterday and took a screenshot of the steps at the end to review on my phone while teaching for the first time today to our group. Very helpful! People liked the game, we had a great father-son face-off moment with first place at 72 points and 2nd at 71.

    To be a little more thematic I tell people the the hand side of the mech is actually people and objects being transported inside it while the active side is people and objects being sent out ahead of the mech to help its progress.
    This is probably what you had in mind when designing the game so hopefully I’m not too far off
    That also helps explain why the cards you gain stay on the right side except for the mech that has a BUILT IN CRANE because of course it can easily bring people in without stopping (refreshing).

      @@jameystegmaierI love as well how the mechs’ powers are reflected in their designs. Isn’t it frustrating to put so much thought into designs that will probably go way over most players’ heads ? Anyway, that is why I love your games. The theme always helps me make sense of the mechanics I’m teaching / learning

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  8 месяцев назад

      @@williammathon7135 Thank you! I wouldn't say frustrating, but it makes me happy when people see how we tried to build the theme and mechanisms together. :)

    My first reaction of playing the game is that I really really like Expeditions.
    Scythe is my all time favorite board game. It’s really a masterpiece from a design perspective.
    And although I miss things like the encounter cards in Scythe, Expeditions is a really fun game that all of us enjoyed!
    I’m already seeing potential for expansions but I’m sure the base game has a lot of great variety already!
    And I gotta say, Jakubs art here is fantastic and I love the colorful meeples that come with the game. The metal Mechs also look amazing and I think they fit nicely into the box. I really like how the box is structured.
    All in all. I’m very happy! Designing this game must have been quite the challenge!

      @jameystegmaier  11 месяцев назад +1

      I'm glad you had a positive first experience with Expeditions! Thanks for trying it. It was a much more challenging design process than I anticipated, as I really wanted to delivery a worthy sequel to all the Scythe fans out there (not just remake Scythe with a few tweaks).

    I have watched a lot of videos, seen multiple play throughs, and even played solo twice. Somehow it took me this long to understand the in-game theme that you are actually upgrading your mech by adding items/melding meteorites to it. It seems so obviously clear now, but it somehow just never clicked. Of course I understood the idea and benefits of items/meteorites, but not the idea that, in-universe, you are doing those things to upgrade your mech. So. Cool.

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  9 месяцев назад +1

      That's right! Your mech is getting better by the items you're installing onto it and the meteorites that you're melding onto it.

    Our group loves this game. I'm a fan of the HP Lovecraft Cthulhu Mythos, and (sorry if this has been discussed before) this has heavy mythos overtones. Meteorites have awakened Old Ones trapped in the ice, along with the dormant corruption they spread then they first arrived, spreading a Color out of Space. Cultists are engaging in Dark Rituals. Tell me this is a Cthulhu Mythos game. Also, will we see the lore fleshed out elsewhere? Thanks!

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks Mike! It isn't a Cthulhu Mythos game, but I think that was an inspiration for Jakub. Most of the lore is visual (over 100 illustrations in the game), but there is also written lore spread out over the 20 different journal pages: stonemaiergames.com/surprises-and-signatures/

    Hey Jamey,
    Really love the deck building aspect and action taking aspects of the game. As well as the theme and art!
    When you play a card and gain its core value, could you place a worker onto a different card in the active row, that doesn’t already have a worker, and use that card’s ability?

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  10 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your question! When you play a card, the only card you can place a worker on (unless otherwise instructed) is the card you're currently playing.

    Love the game. Had to buy the Ironclad Edition because it was the only one available for me to purchase at the moment and wasn't sure if I wanted to pay that extra for the metal mechs since if it doesn't bring any new content, it's not usually my thing but MAN ..!!! those heavy metal mechs feels great to land on the tiles. Gives a lot of weight to your decision haha ! Great game ✌️ very, very solid. The art and world building are top tier. Get vibes from one of my favorite game Vindication. Thank you Jamey

    In my group it would never work to leave certain things out of the actual teach and only bring them up later as they become important, my friends want to have everything laid out so they can make informed decisions from the start, I can defenitely see perks in both ways

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  11 месяцев назад +1

      Definitely, I know some people like that too. I personally think with the right information up front you can make informed decisions without knowing every little rule in the game--if that's important to them, they can read the rules or watch a rules video in advance.
