Great video. Tip number 5 is definitely the most important one imo. What I try the most in my games is to put "food powers" birds in my eggs and cards row. This way, I barely ever need to use the food row. Egg row is so important since the eggs are worth points and the cards row is good if you have solid "tuck cards" engine. Pink powers can be bad or powerful depending of three things : Player number, the action probability and at which stage of the game you play it. Don't use these cards in 2-3 player games, but in 4-5 player games it is really good. Use the one with popular actions like "everytime someone lay eggs" v.s. the ones that are more rare (hunting birds for example). Also, it is good to play these in the first two rounds and less exciting at round 3 and 4.
I really like those birbs who can switch between habitats. Gives you great options to adjust your gameplay and strategy, especially at the beginning of the game when you want that extra food token and you can save egg costs! You have to plan at least 1-2 moves in advance tho. I also love the Europe expansion with the blueish ability birds for the end of round. Will definitely get the Oceania expansion soon!
I just got Wingspan but I’ve only played the solo mode and was beat everytime against the Automa. I was heavily focused on End-of-Round Goals and Bonus Cards. But after watching this video I switched up my focus on building my engine (using your tips on card placement) and now I could beat the Automa, while still reaching Goals and fulfilling Bonus cards (and that was super satisfying).
I've been learning some of these strategies through repeated play. I think that the ramping strategy makes a lot of sense but I've noticed that some small cost birds have very different victory points, so make sure you're ramping up the victory points by the end of the game! Also I can vouch for the Raven/Crow strategy. I put these guys in my prairie and was able to create eggs and food at the same time allowing me to play some great cards that came into my hand. I got almost ninety points that game! Appreciate all the tips!
People overlook pink abilities a lot imo. I'm one of those players that used to have a full stack of brown powers to build the most powerful engine for myself. But I've realized (especially with more players playing, even with only 2 or 3 players playing though some are very useful) that these pink powers CAN be very useful, especially the 'when another player lays eggs' archetypes. Everyone is going to be laying eggs intermittently, as they require them for playing birds and taking other actions, and especially end of game people tend to start activating their grasslands engines more and more. The great benefit? Passive income of eggs (or others things based on other pink powers). This can really save a lot of actions, especially early game and allow you to spend more time playing birds etc, especially if you're collecting a crucial dice or saving a turn on playing an egg to play more birds, and gets your engine going that much faster. Of course this strategy, like most in wingspan, is situational. It will vary in results every time based on everyone else's boards and cards. But I often overlooked pinks for browns when I first started playing, and think they've gotten more potent with newer expansions as well.
Very helpful and informative......THANK YOU! My wife and I just started playing Wingspan and I was looking for some ideas on general strategy. The tip about using "opposite actions" is brilliant, and I'll definitely incorporate that into my play.
Such a helpful video! I've been working through why I just can't get the points that others seem to get. Tip #5 makes perfect sense! I can't wait to see my friends' faces when I pull the dub on them! LOL
Thanks man, appreciate the video. just discovered your channel, your editing is very good, your lighting and sound quality is very good as well. Very professional , keep it up.
Thank you Sam for your videos. It is really great to get tips when you haven't played the game yet. Your channel was advised by "Before you play" . They were right !
I've heard raven and crow are overpowered. Would it be better to take these out of game to ensure it's a bit more fair and not just dependent on if you're the lucky one to get these cards?
Thanks for these great tips. I stumbled over this game on BGA and kind of fell in love with it. But I simply do not manage to beat the automa on level normal (= "Eagle"). I keep losing with 15 points behind. Let's see if these tips make my play better.
Nice video. I agree with some of your tips but also disagree with others. E.g. regarding your tip 4 "stay away from pink ability cards": Obviously pink ability cards are way stronger in high player count than in low player count. I would totally agree on not picking them up in a two player game. However if you are playing a 4-5 player game there are some pink ability cards that are just insanely strong. For example "get an egg when someone else takes eggs" is insanely strong in the midgame when you are not planning on taking a lot of eggs yourself. Also here some tips from my side: Try to build an actual engine in one row of your board that you can abuse in the lategame. In theory every row can be used for this however in the basegame specifically the egg-laying-row is by far the strongest. This engine should have brown abilities only that grant you points and you can abuse in the lategame for a ton of free points per turn. Keep in mind that eggs give points but food and cards usually dont. Hence placing the engine in the middle row (eggs) is strong. Engine in top is usually super bad (because there arent a lot of options how to generate points with your food), but an engine in the bottom can be insanely good as well. Last week I cracked my highscore (132pts) with an engine in the wetlands that gave me the option to tuck 8 cards per turn alongside two pink birds in other habitats that gave me free eggs when other players take eggs - average of 9-10 pts per turn for the last 6 turns is just broken. I totally agree that bonus cards (as well as round end bonus) should not be overrated. In my highscore game I had 4 points in round end bonus and 3 points in bonus cards.
Thanks a lot for this, I seriously need it because I have never yet managed to win Wingspan despite playing, well it must be over 30 games 😭😂 I think I do tend to focus on the bonus cards too much....but you're right, some birds are worth way more alone. We had a crazy game the other week where a friend managed to tuck over 30 cards behind one of their birds - insane! 😲
Holy moly!! 30 wowza, yes theirs bonus cards can help... but definitely don’t make them your whole strategy. I think I just watched your root play through and enjoyed it a lot. You guys do great work.
Great video! I played the boardgame for the first time this weekend at a friend's house and immediately got the digital version to practice. I feel like I know the strategies and I have a good grasp of the game but I'm still never scoring above 80. Gives me a great reason to play more though!
Hey! Practice totally makes perfect. I remember my first score was 57 and now my most recent score was 108. It can truly depend on what you see and the opportunities available. Have you always been mixing brown abilities with tracks that are different?
Thanks 'Lord of the Board', this was of some help 👍 I only say 'some' due to myself finding Wingspan through 'steam' as an online game rather than board, which translates differently so please forgive me 😌
I don't agree about the pink cards, foremost the one you showed. Getting an egg extra usually is a good thing. All the time players are laying eggs, so you can get 1 or more of these eggs. Otherwise, some pink cards are really awful. But the pink card thing depends on your strategy. Also, I don't agree about playing "exchanged powers" like a draw-card bird on a Food row. Depends on your strategy. Usually I play egg cards on lay egg row and it works finely, giving extra resources I look for. Usually I play the crow on that row too, when I can immediately change it for food. I think your first advice is really great! Bonus cards use to hold your development. One extra thing I would tell is to calculate how many point you would earn in the final bird frames that cost 2 eggs, specially by the final turns, meaning that you will lose 2 points to play a bird, and sometimes you can make more points just activating laying eggs (for me, the most important row at the end of the game).
Did you change the beat drop at the end because of the comment in your root strategy video? I had just read that comment and then clicked here to watch this video- it’s so nice that you took on board the suggestion of your viewers!! It sounds sick my dude 🌟
I tried to make them more enjoyable! Yes I read and try to respond to every comment :) thanks! And glad you enjoyed it . I think the music has definitely improved around here
Hello from germany! I like your tips especially the tip with the brown birds to play at the beginning and the Birds with many Points at the end. But i dont know if tip 5 is correct. I played wingspan over 90 times since christmas 2019 and i put the birds with the cardbonus in the sea, the foodbonus birds in the forest.... Im winning with this strategy maybe 70% of the games and i think IT is better because you can better calculate. My experience shows that it is better to get 2 cards and choose the best and then take 2 food u need then to get 1 bird and 1 food 2 times for example. My personal record are 107 points.
Hey that is why this game is great. Completely different strategies work! I have found more often than not mixing the tracks makes you have to do less actions in order to get things done. I would have to check my all time highest score. I know it’s above 100 and it’s logged in my bg stats :) but appreciate the comment and keep playing!
I like playing with the suggestion made my the content creator. only because it is nice to maximize use of your turns. when I get lucky and i am able to gather food on my egg collecting turns, that is when i find i have my highest scoring games. that's why the chihauhaun raven is so powerful in the second row.
Great tips! 👍🏻👍🏻 The raven is the most OP card in the game, if it’s in your starting hand it’s almost an automatic win. Another tip I think is good is to set up a good egg drawing engine, so by round 4 you are just racking up tons of points by taking the lay eggs action.
Lord of the Board Yes! The European expansion addresses this issue, I'd highly recommend it. It makes the egg strategy not as OP and gives you more options.
@@LordoftheBoard The european expansion addressed this issue a little bit, but laying egg remained the usually go to strategy. In the upcoming Ocenia expansion, they are adding a new food ressource, new dices and new and changed boards. They buffed the food and cards rows and nerfed the egg row. They also are adding a new mechanic that you can spend a food token to re-roll the birdfeeder or even re-draw a card (not 100% sure for this one) making the excess food more uselful.
@@BenjaminH_48 In the wetlands there are opportunities to reset the bird tray. So you'll get your choice of a few new birds.. or a blind draw from the top of the deck, of course. It's a nice way to hamper automa if you see they have some nice choices on offer and you need new cards or have a nice engine working in the wetlands.
What bird would win in a 1v1 fight? Crow, or Duck?
The crow would start the fight. I saw a crow start a fight with a cat the other day. The duck would totally win though, they’re bosses
I know hawks are afraid of crows, so I'm going with Crow!!
I have had chickens for ten years, predator birds were always a problem. Got ducks a couple seasons back, finding dead crows in pond.
I don't think a duck has a waepon like a crowbar. The only thing Ducks can do is to duck the crowbar. So, I pick the crow!

Good point! I truly love this game. Its so simplistic and yet so depth filled... Great thoughts and I totally agree with you on this.
Great tips! Several things I've never thought of after probably 20 games.
