Spector sets the standard. Nothing plays better than one! Or sounds as brutal as one. The only bass in league with Spector is Wal imo. Jason's bass tone eats its wheaties every morning as you can tell 😂
Then when you get to Spector you realise there is levels to this shit! haha! The Haz preamp in those early NS-2's were gnarly AF! This 1981 NS-2 absolutely has that....the Tone Pump or OBP3 preamp is one thing but the Haz is next level. \m/
I love it how every wall in that studio seemed to be filled with infinite pictures of naked chicks. Hey, whatever gets you in the zone to whip out some great music, man.
If you hear a song with and without the bass guitar you'll get exactly why it exists. It's harder to pick out of the mix if you don't have a trained ear for it then drums, guitars etc. but it's most definitely neccesary. In live situations it's even more important.
They took the guy who wrote Doomsday for the Deceiver, and made him a session musician. He deserved better, and they deserve all flack they've received (and more).
Just putting up with Ulrich, is a major achivement. Just imagine trying to lock into that kind of drumming.... Jason is a waay better musician than Lars. Still got pissed on. It's really sad.

He is mediocre because he plays with a pick? If you listen to their live stuff he is clearly as gifted as Burton. I’m not saying he is a misunderstood genius, only that he is clearly more gifted than Lars and Kirk. If he were given a fair shake in the band and was aloud to write with James we would have got a lot more bangers like Blackened. Having said that I have not listened to Metallica in any serious way in 15 years.

Even Jason said in an interview that the whole hazing thing was blown out of proportion by other people. Yes, they didn't treat him very well at the beginning but that lasted for about a year or so and then they started treating each other like friends and getting along.

It's unheard on AJFA, because the bass track doesn't exist. The songs on AJFA are great. It's that the tone is awful Jason kept in touch with Kelly Smith, the original drummer of Flotsam and Jetsam. Kelly didn't just mention that the bass tracks for AJFA were dumped. Newsted also told him that the drum tracks for Load Nad Reload are actually drum machine tracks. Being that the tone sounded subdued, kinda robotic, perfectly in time and doesn't have any drumming traits that Lars is known for, such as accenting on the 2 insted of the 1, that made perfect sense to me. Also, because it took lars 9 months to track his drums for the Black album. lol!
