An Electrum Ring (sandcasting)

- Casting a solid electrum (aka green gold) ring using the sandcasting method. It's a real thing, it's just not from Minecraft!
The alloy mix used here is 5% copper with the remainder split evenly between silver and gold.

Your skill and knowledge.
Very comforting.
You speak like the Dean of an ancient university.
Wowzers! I love that you can actually get some of the green tint in the final photos! I will be trying this
As far as rings go
the lava rivulet is
cold to forever.
Love you Mat.

So many oddly satisfying shots, this is beautiful craftsmanship.
Acetone, what a good idea to clean off polish!
This is very, and i cannot stress this enough, very cool
when you assemble both halves of the mould - how do you ensure that the channels are aligned? Or does the mould only fit one way?
There are registration marks on the outside of the moulding rings - all you need to do is make sure they're lined up and it's good to go.
Nice, old school Tech!
Love this, but WHERE ARE YOU, please? Or at least what country and state? Thanks.
Sorry, what're the last two tools you use at the end for the final polish? The handheld thing and then the fuzzy wheel? lol
Have you tried preheating the mould? I don't know much about sandcasting but I feel like it could help with the metal flow into the mould
Preheating can help but I think in this instance I was focusing too much on filming and not enough on making sure my metal was hot enough to pour properly!
That was fun!
I want to start making rings. Do you have any tips on foundry
Do you experience any shrinkage in the cast? I’m getting ready to make a ring doing the lost wax method and I was told to oversize my wax ring by 10%
Not significantly. I tend to make my forms slightly oversize but that's more to give me some space to grind off imperfections than anything else. A clean sand cast comes out pretty much the same size as the form you're casting from.
Wax behaves differently I think (and even then, the degree of shrinkage depends on your wax and investment choices)
lol I always wondered how many alloys from modded Minecraft were actually real.
Does Minecraft have Orichalcum? I've got another video about making that. Aluminium Brass is common in 'gold' coins like the Euro. "Lumium" (aka silver/tin) exists and is used in making solder, but it's not called lumium. Not sure what else is out there, I haven't played for years.
@@MatBrown I have never actually heard of Orichalcum, and haven't seen it in any mods. The only metals in the base game are iron and gold, but there are mods such as tinkers construct that add in a bunch of other metals, and alloys. I know Invar was an alloy I always wondered about, it was nickel and iron mixed, and it had more durability that iron, but I've never seen/heard of it irl.
I wonder if electrum is strong enough for a split shank that attaches to a fine silver seat. Thoughts?
Could be. If you kept it fairly chunky and used some copper in the mix it's probably worth knocking up a prototype at least.
@@MatBrown Thanks. I am newer to metallurgy. Do you think that copper will turn my Client's finger green, though? That is what I am trying to avoid. I was thinking 50/50 pure silver/gold...
Is the resulting ring 12K or is it higher? What is the other metal in the alloy that you use - silver?
In this video I just use pure silver and gold, but since filming this I've found adding a few % of copper makes the final alloy much more durable.
50% gold is 12k, so if that's what is used then yes, the resulting ring is 12k, but I end up making all sorts of mixtures depending on what people want.
Can you wear it in the ocean

Watching the flumps in the background?
I thought a flump was a sort of marshmallow? I don't have a TV in my workshop, that would be far too dangerous. I usually listen to the radio.
vocal track reminds me of golf casters, nearly fell asleep.
You speak super weird’
Your whispering is bordering on creepy ASMR voiceover. Project your voice more :D
That's not entirely intentional. I record audio in a very quiet room with a fairly high gain mic so I tend to lower my voice. Will try to be more forward in future! :)
@@MatBrown Dw mate Its not bad at all :D Great Video new sub
For me, ASMR is one of the creepiest things.
You sound so wheezy and unhealthy, it really distracted me from the work you were doing.
what are the chances you'd make a money clip in this alloy?
I'm not sure it would work very well, it's very soft compared to silver or even gold.
Love this, but WHERE ARE YOU, please? Or at least what country and state? Thanks.
UK. shinium.co.uk but I ship worldwide.
