What If Dale Jr. Stayed At DEI?

  • The breakup of Dale Jr. and the family owned team of Dale Earnhardt Incorporated was the most publicized free agent fight in NASCAR history. Earnhardt eventually went to Hendrick Motorsports but what if it didn’t happen? What if Dale Jr. and Teresa Earnhardt managed to work things out and keep Junior at DEI?

I think we all know that. Dale Sr once stated that Teresa was his philosophical lawyer, in other words she was his enforcer. With Sr, gone there was no one with enough people skills and racing knowledge to make the operation run smooth unless she was willing to step down and like Kelly run it and Kelly would've been WAY better because she prefers to look after people like she tries to look after Junior. She is very awesome. Teresa sadly was thrown into a position that was not meant for her talents. Kelley should've been running DEI. However the spirit of DEI lives on with Junior and Kelley and that's what matters.

I seriously think that you look at the success JR Motorsports has and that’s proof of how well it would’ve gone with him as the leader of the company. I had a feeling that DEI was in trouble after the 2004 season and the crew swap with the 8 and 15. That was the beginning of the end and the hiring of Max Siegel was also a major problem for the team. Dale Jr would’ve made sure that the team was something his father would’ve been proud of. It was ashamed that a team with that making of being a powerful team like a Gibbs and Hendrick didn’t reach full potential. The greed of one person tore down the years of hard work by Dale Sr.

Honestly knowing what I know now about the internals at DEI, I think if Dale Jr. would have improved DEI greatly. His name alone would have kept sponsor dollars coming in, his eye for talent would have kept top drivers in the house, they would have definitely had more of a presence from an owners standpoint at the track and would have found what was lacking in the motor shop. Honestly there were too many changes in the organization from 2006 on for them to stay competitive. One thing I think you glossed over is I think Mark Martin would have still come to DEI first as a part timer and eventually full time and maybe even got a championship that always eluded him.

However, I think Jr. leaving DEI was kind of inevitable because of his growing rift with Teresa Earnhardt.

  • @curtfriedrich6147

At the time, I did not think that Junior was ready for a Cup Ownership role. Seeing what he has done in the Busch series and I feel if JRM moved to Cup, they would be a powerhouse. If he stayed and Teresa was not an absentee owner, Junior would have been more of a powerhouse than he was at HMS. On one hand though, he did have to go through some maturity issue at Hendrick. It took Letarte to square him away. He could have easily been a powerhouse at Hendrick. What If? But as the GREAT Dale Earnhadt once said "if's don't win championships"!

I don't know about a lot of this hypothetical stuff, but I will say it would heavily alter many things. No Budweiser sponsorship for Kahne in the #9 from 2008-2010, and no Budweiser sponsorship for Kevin Harvick. Additionally, Rick Hendrick played a massive role in the establishment of JRM becoming a power house team in the Xfinity Series, I don't know if they would've seen Keselowski or Byron at all. You also have to look at RCR, I don't think much would've changed Harvick's decision and it's quite clear that when he left, RCR was relegated to a mid pack team. So I'd say that Mark Martin would've likely landed a ride somewhere decent regardless. I could go on forever but I'll just throw those things out there.

Matt Kenseth would probably not have the 2013 season he had in real life but probably wouldn't of retired at the end of 2017 either as long as he had sponsorship and would probably get one or two wins a season. Oh and DEI would maybe have a Hendrick alliance like SHR did in order to improve their performance.

If rcr had the top tier cars and Harvick was able to have Rodney Childers on the box it might be a different story.

Your whole premise assumes that Teresa would have given Dale Jr more control, which she would not do. All this because of one accident on the last corner on the last lap of the Daytona 500. DEI would only exist today if that never happened. Dale Jr leaving in 2007 was a forgone conclusion after that point.

To be honest, after hearing recent interviews with jr, he regrets not sticking with DEI. When he went to hendrick, his whole identity as “Dale Jr”, his fan base, etc just wasn’t “hendrick”. I bet this decision sits in the back of his mind with the decrease in success he had. He won’t ever admit that however.

That would've been the single WORST decision of Jr's career, had he stayed with that witch, as she systematically destroyed DEI. If she would've stepped aside and allowed REAL men to run that organization........that would be a different story altogether. DEI already had the super speedways stitched up. All they needed was to perfect their short & mid track programs. .......and she blew the whole thing to hell.

2001: DEI cars finish 1-2 in the Daytona 500, with Dale Earnhardt finishing 3rd as he holds off the field behind him. Dale Earnhardt announces his retirement in 2003 and names Jeff Burton the replacement driver to the 3 car.
2002: Dale Earnhardt gets his last win during the EA Sports 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
2003: Dale Earnhardt officially retires. Steve Park is injured during a race at Pocono, but goes through an unusually fast recovery and wins the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway as Dale Earnhardt Jr. wins his first and only Winston Cup Championship.
2004: Inaugural “Chase for the NEXTEL cup” season. Jeff Burton wins the Coca-Cola 600 in the 3 car.

Even if Dale Earnhardt Jr stayed at DEI it wouldn't have made a damn bit of difference. His stepmother Teresa would had him in her hip pocket. Wins, losses and championships would not come by way of D3I post Sr. Now if you want to ask the question, what if Dale Earnhardt Sr. never died.? Now you can speculate something grand.. Dale Earnhardt Jr probably would have had himself at least one Championship under his belt not to mention a dozen or so winds couple dozen top 10's and 5's. That's my take on it!.

Honestly it’s a good thing he went to Hendrick. As cool as we all think it would have been for Dale Jr to drive for DEI his whole career, there was no leader there with Sr. being gone. Jr could not have run that program like he does JR Motorsports now because he gained so much knowledge and experience being with Rick Hendrick. He needed that leader to guide him the right direction, and DEI could have only sustained their success had Dale Sr. lived.

  • @LionManatic
    @LionManatic 4 года назад

I think, if Jr stayed, it would've still been a downhill slope. To where, he'd end up (or almost have), like his nephew Jeffery Earnhardt today, until Jr decides to jump ship. Though, at such a time, Hendrick would possibly already be full with: Johnson, Gordon, Kyle Busch, and a retiring Mark Martin, but Brad K. is already signed to replace him. So, Jr then looks around for another Chevy team, which could be Chip Ganassi after they make the switch from Dodge to Chevy, where he could drive either a 41 or 42 or possibly a new number or 88.
But, if not Chip, then I can see Jr going to the Xfinity series with HMS, and racing to help develop drivers, while also winning races or titles for Mr.H.

  • @ThorneyGryffon

Better question? What if Dale Sr hadn't been killed at Daytona? Is DEI the power house that JGR is today or Hendrick was, in the 2000s? Does Kevin Harvick wait until Sr retires before taking over the 3? Or does he move to another team? I think DEI would have been a better team, Maybe Dale Jr wins a couple championships under his dad's tutelage. Jeffrey Earnhardt wins a Busch series(now xfinity) championship or two, eventually taking over the 1 car in Cup? Does the entire 2000 dynamic change for the sport? Does Tony Stewart go to Haas and found SHR? SAFER barriers and HAN Restraints would have been at least a decade later in the sport. Would the COT have been a radically different design as well??

  • @StraightTruckinSnowman

Teresa proved she doesn't give a shit about Dale Sr's legacy only his fortune by forcing his sons and daughter out of DEI. Happy to see how Dale Jr. and Kelly have turned Jr. Motorsports into the premier Xfinity organization for Chevy drivers.
