This is great! Very informative. But I want all mommas out there to know that you do what makes you comfortable! Please don’t compare yourself or your baby to someone else or their babies. Just because they start BLW at a certain age doesn’t mean you have to. You do what makes you comfortable! As long as baby is getting breastfed or formula they are getting their nutrition. YOU are doing an amazing job momma! Baby will learn as they grow. 💕💕💕don’t feel pressured to start before you are ready!
My daughter just started baby led weaning with her 8 mo old daughter. Thank you so much for this video, it is worth its’ weight in gold! Many thanks and much love to you and your little family!💗✨✨
One thing that I would add that you touched on: it doesn't have to be all or nothing! I really wanted the benefits of baby led weaning but really didn't feel comfortable going all out. I never used purees, but instead, I would find food I could easily mash with a fork to keep some substance and texture. I would load a spoon for her so she could still get the benefit of self feeding. I did this until she got her pincher grasp so that I could cut up stuff into smaller pieces, but she could grab it then. That was a great scenario for us and so far she loves to eat and tries and loves basically anything!
I wish! I would have incorporated both! For a while my child was picky with the spoon and was very suspicious of being spoon fed would not take anything in a spoon at all!! And when he got in a picky stage that was a big problem bc there was no way to get him to ingest it. I think had i did both ny God's grace things would have been different
Yep I did the same and it works for us to do a mix of both. It reduced my stress (about not eating enough or chocking possibility) as well as my babe’s (because she would get super annoyed when she couldn’t really put the food in her mouth properly.)
You might be interested in learning about intuitive eating! It really helps with feeling frustrated with meal refusal to see it as okay, for whatever reason they just aren’t as hungry as usual, or aren’t in the mood, etc. and your job of providing the meal is done, so no need to stress over if they eat it or not. It’s hard with a smaller baby (my son is around the same size as yours) but their bodies truly do know when they are hungry or not, and learning about intuitive eating really helped me to stress less about how much they actually consume and focus on providing the meal and cleaning up the uneaten food sometimes.
Food refusal is tough to handle for me too. Sometimes having to provide 2 or 3 food options/ back up is exhausting. Also when you are doing your best and quickly try to prepare the next option ( warm it up etc) and your baby flips because she is now so hungry because she threw down her food is so tiring.
I watched a few youtube videos that showed what baby gagging looked like, so that when it was happening to my baby, I knew what was happening. Really helped.
so helpful thank you so much! I'm in the same boat. Been super scared of choking so I've been giving my baby purees for 16 months. I'm slowly switching her to BLW as I have to get her ready for daycare soon. this video gave me some courage.
I love how genuine you are in your videos! You’re so down to Earth and sweet. Keep it up, Mama and best of luck with the new babe ☺️ love your content!!
Perfect timing on this! My baby is four and a half months old and I’ve recently started trying to research and think ahead before we begin our BLW journey, so this is really helpful. 🤍
I was just thinking last night how helpful your BLW videos have been, sharing not only what you feed baby but the meal prep, making more for future meals etc. So I will be taking advantage of the printable you've provided for sure. I too have been overwhelmed and frustrated w these same things and nice to know it's not just me. Thank you for sharing Solid Starts, I love how they show videos of different ages of babies eating the food you are looking for. So cool! 💕
I’m only two weeks in and I wish I had known about (and was prepared for) the amount of food loss. Right now he’s not actually swallowing anything so every time I put his food in front of him I have to mentally make peace with the fact that it’s going to end up half-chewed in the garbage. As someone who grew up impoverished it hurts my heart but that’s just the reality of teaching your little human how to eat.
Our 12 month old LOVES soy milk (we're doing soy instead of cow's milk for a multitude of reasons), so that could be something you could try. We just get the 365 brand (from Whole Foods) shelf-stable, organic, unsweetened soy milk and it's been great. It's fortified too so it even helps to get in some extra nutrients that way too. Just a suggestion! Love your content very very much! ❤️
Great video. I havent started yet and I'm already familiar with solid starts and gagging vs choking, but I'm still nervous! I can totally see how the only way around the anxiety is through it! Thanks Megan

Amazingly helpful. We just started literally a week ago and have turned to purees a couple times just because of not feeling confident in whether something was prepared right or just the fact that what we were eating wasn't appropriate for her and didn't have time to make her something separate. I'm sending this to my husband and 100% know this will help us get a better sense of direction! Since we just started this is just in perfect time so we can continue with BLW... as it kinda felt like a fail so far 🤣
Oh my gosh… I really needed to hear this today! Thank you so much for such an honest video ♥️ We have started blw about a month ago and it has been a JOURNEY…! I can definitely relate to a lot of things you mentioned…… I absolutely love Solid Starts too!! 😍 They also have some amazing paid content with recipes and other helpful stuff! Love your content and lovely personality :)) Take care!!
You make great informative videos, thank you. My babies (twins, b/g) are only 6 weeks old, but I know I want to do baby led weaning and so I appreciate the advice I find on your channel ❤
I prefer to mix feed my baby purees and table foods. My baby is also on the smaller side so I purposefully fed him the purees to make sure he was eating. I do allow him to self-feed when he's already eaten a good portion of his food. For table foods, I make sure its soft enough for him to mash in his mouth. Personally, I don't feel comfortable offering harder textures because of the choking risk.
Our baby is now 6 months and we do the same! I check out BLW with each child (this is baby #5) and I'm still not convinced I like the idea of going fully 100 percent with BLW. I've watched enough videos now to just be content doing our own way--- love what you said as it's exactly what we do. She eats purees sometimes with solids inside or solid pieces on the side... The older the baby becomes, the more chunks we do and the less purees.
My baby's first food was a piece of steak. She loved it! As a 6 month old she obviously couldn't bite and chew it yet but she got the juices out of it by gumming and sucking on it. Them threw it on the ground and our dog got to enjoy it lol 😂
I love your videos. I can relate to everything!! It’s so hard for us mamas but what matters at the end of the day is that our babies are loved and taken care of, moms are amazing ❤️
Thank you for this video! I have been struggling with getting my baby to eat solids ☹️ he’s 8 months and refuses to eat anything other than breast milk… the textures really throw him off but I read that it’s normal for babies to take longer than others 😕
My son was the same way. He will get it when he is ready. Just like walking....one minute they are crawling and within the blink of an eye they are walking.
What a great video Megan, and I enjoy watching your topics on parenting as well. So, this video came right in time for us, as our baby just turned 5 months old and I am starting to learn about the next big chapter of feeding - which is BLW. My husband and I have a different level of understanding on this topic, so I am trying to find more video contents to show him what it really is, and your video is very very helpful. Thank you for sharing a lot of your concerns when you got started, it's helping us to feel better about it, such as baby gagging, etc. Isn't it cool that without teeth, our bubs can still process this food? Oh! I heard amazing things about the Solid starts APP, very happy to have you mention it too. Greetings to you & your beautiful family.
I thought it's interesting that you mentioned that the most challenging time was between 11-13 months because you were doing 3 meals, 2 snacks, milk and breastfeeding and struggled with the fact that he wasn't always eating what you made and threw it on the ground. Just maybe as a tip on this, I would skip the snacks. Milk/breastfeeding is the snack. You don't NEED to do 2 more snacks on top of that. When they have much less milk then maybe 1-2 snacks is helpful, but when they are still drinking a significant amount of milk, snacks are an overkill. That's why he is throwing food on the ground. He is just no hungry enough. My daughter is now around that age and we do 3 meals per days + 4 milk bottles. Occasionally if we're running late for a meal or in transit I give her a small snack, but that doesn't happen often. She always eats all her food in all 3 sessions.
Love all your videos Megan! Your such a good mama to Rowan! Very inspiring. My son is turning 5 months soon and I’m trying to do some research on BLW but not much do it that I know about. Where else did you find information other than solid starts?
I have feeding my baby purées and haven’t started blw. Now my son’s 11months I want to start blw but he seems to hate the high chair and being interested in food
The refusal destroys me daily. I really need to hone in on meal prep and cooking and cutting it the right way because if I offer something and I don't know if it's in the right "form", I don't know why he is refusing it. Yesterday I cut everything up the right way and I put it in a shallow Tupperware and set it in front of him and for the first time ever about food, he said "Yay!" And I wanted to cry. Because he drinks from me SO much and so every time he refuses to even taste the food I'm offering him, I feel like he's saying "no thanks I'll just drink from your body later" and it feels like a neverending madness of rationing the energy I use on myself and the energy I use on him.
Going through this same stage of weaning off BM and blw. I would love if you could share a little about Rowan's schedule 🙏 when do you give a snack, a meal, breastfeed and whole milk? I am so confused and can't seem to get a routine down 🙈
it varies every day but here’s what today looked like! 7- nurse 8:30-breakfast 10:30-snack 12:30- lunch with whole milk 3:00- nurse 4:30- snack 6:30-dinner 7:30- nurse before bed
My baby is 7.5 months old. He basically eats anything I give him. One problem I am facing with BLW is my baby doesn't want to touch food. He wants to be fed instead. The second he touches the food he just let it go. Can you please give me any tips on that, if possible?
Meal refusal is the hardest for me. My almost 8 months old currently refuses all food. He was eating a bit but stopped around 1 week ago. Sooooo annoying.
My biggest tip is to keep trying different things, including things that are just to whet the appetite, like big, tough chunks of meat or even fruits or veggies that might be fun toys and then end up... Ya know... Kinda eating size. Also try preloaded forks.
My cousin was so scared of their baby gagging that up until now they didn't have the courage to feed their baby again. Their child is 3 now and last time I heard, the child still refuses to eat solids and would only eat soft foods like tofu or mashed potatoes.
How'd it go for you? For anyone reading who is having trouble... I ended up getting baby started with big chunks of lightly salted meat, she would suck and gum it and get all worked up. After that, she would take almost anything but most particularly, avocado or sweet potato on a baby fork. That was the only thing that got her going in the beginning. Keep experimenting and you'll hit on something. Don't be bashful with the big strips of tough, chewy, lightly salted beef!
Just FYI just because a baby is on the 15% of weight DOES NOT MEAN they need to gain weight..it means they are just petite...who made the rule that it's better to be above the 50% tile?? I have 2 babies (both born at home) and they were between the 5 and 25%tile the whole first year..and they were never sick, crawled & talked early...unless they are NOT thriving..weight has nothing to do with good health.
Could you please elaborate more about milky water. My one year old and I are in the same situation and I am very worried as he cannot tolerate whole milk.
They sell silicone cups like that at Primark. My sister gave here baby part breast milk past whole milk to get him used to it when he was over a year old.
As soon as you said CPR classes I opted out of the BLW idea. Even though CPR classes are indeed very useful for every parent out there, the thought of my baby choking on some food terrifies me. I think I'd be crippled with fear soo yeah lol. I think I'll start them with the purees
My baby is 6 month and we are about to start BLW. I am wondering how long should each feeding session be? 10 min? 20 min? or when baby lose interest in food?
I've introduced solids to my baby and he's gotten better w chewing, I'm so proud of how quickly he's picked up on how to chew! However I'm still nervous about him choking so I cut up his food into super small pieces. Should I be making the pieces bigger as he gets older?
Check with your pediatrician but a lot of times a lot bigger is actually better to start with for choking! Smaller pieces are easier to accidentally swallow and choke on
I think this is a great progression but what’s the rush? Baby goes from breastmilk or formula straight to solid, handheld food with little to no teeth. I feel like its kinda taking away some excellent learning moments. U don’t expect ur kid to go from crawling to running right?
my pediatricians say don’t offer other options if they don’t like A meal because it teaches them hey if I don’t eat this I’ll get something I already like. Just a opinion 🙂 i usually always fix something in our meal I know he likes so if he doesn’t want to try something different he still has another option
I think it’s important to continue to offer a variety of foods and introduce them to new textures and flavors. Just because they don’t like something one day doesn’t mean they don’t like it ever. They might just not be in the mood that day. We don’t typically offer something else when he refuses a food. The portions are big enough that he is able to just eat the other foods since we do multiple foods/flavors every meal
@@MeganAcuna oh yes I know this it took many tries of many foods some he hated at first and now loves. I always reoffer. I thought you meant in the video you offer something else if he turned down a new food. I misunderstood
Thank you for your lovely video ❤️.. I need a guide from you, bz im worrying about my baby's eating behavior (she is a picky eater). I know it is too late to start BLW bt i hope any suggestion from you. She is now 18 months and LBW. Feeding time has become the most stressful time of the day for me 😥
I want to start BLW with my 7 month old but I’m so afraid. I gave him a banana and he tried to bite off huge chunks. I thought he was gonna choke and because it’s so slippery I wouldn’t be able to get it out of his mouth if he did. Any advice? Avocado gave me the same fear
I appreciate you sharing this concept. I learned a lot from this video. I have a bit of concern though. I am trying to do blw with my 10 month old baby boy. I know distractions are number 1 no no with the rules on "how to" but for now, it's the only way he can actually eat while watching cocomelon. I am trying to gradually remove the practice though.. I hope you can share some advice with my situation?
We are entering a cocomelon weaning phase right now at almost 21 months. When the tantrums started after turning it off, I decided we should move on. My advice is to cut it out completely and endure the adjustment period. It might suck for a few days or even a week, but hopefully he will adapt and learn to eat without it. It might be painful in the meantime!
Hey Just curious we do blw too but wondering why you don’t fix him exactly what you eat and leave out extra salt? I’ve always read and been told the whole purpose is so you share family meals.
We usually feed him a variation of what we have for dinner every night but not all the foods we eat are appropriate for him at this age so we need to modify. Having family meals is a wonderful part of it but there are also a LOT of other benefits to BLW (developing a good relationship with food and self-regulation, fine motor skills practice, avoiding picky eating, etc.) that you should definitely check out for an even better understanding on this topic! 💛
@@MeganAcuna oh I know there are many benefits to it. I’ve done a ton of research and have joined many groups. I just get confused when people offer totally different meals than their own since it is a big part of it. I understand sodium is a big thing to look after. However we still add other spices ect to Lukas food and will just remove his before we further season with salt ect. Was just curious I see so many fixing totally different meals and it just seems like so much extra work 😅
My daughter hated whole milk too. I was formula feeding so mixed part of that with the milk and then she still didn't go for that so I tried warming it up a little and bam she liked it.
I paid for the all access pass. The videos were SO helpful and gave me the confidence to start and know how to do BLW and my son is 8 months now and he’s doing great! The guides are moderately useful for meal ideas, but the app is super helpful and free! You can look up any food in the app and see serving size/choking and allergen information!
I think that baby LED weaning should only be started after consultation with pediatrician. My doctor told me not to do it unless I know how to give a first aid in case of choking. I think that many parents may not know about it and just start it without any precautions.
I have tried to give her apple and pear (boiled them first to get then soft enough) but they always end up too mushy... Got any tips on that? I also gave her some omelette (she loved that!) And she sucked on a couple of pasta pieces with homemade tomato sauce from my dinner plate. She seems to enjoy the hearty stuff more than the fruit, but I think she can simply not hold on to the fruit well enough..
Did you give bite sized pieces or was it always long finger foods? 9-12 months they should eat bite sized pieces and after 1 they should size up again. If yes, what are the foods that you gave bite sized?
@@MeganAcuna yes for 6-9months, but the section "how to serve" on the Solid Starts page (and app) recommends bite sized pieces for 9-12months for most of the foods I've searched. That's why I'm a bit confused now at 10months.
Our pediatrician recommended six months of exclusively breastfeeding, then introducing solids at six months while continuing to breastfeed several times a day for a year. We’re just weaning him now at 15 months.

Oh momma. Glad to hear it started working out for you.
@@goodcitizen3780 Thank you
Very helpful video, thank you
Such a great content. Thanks very much for this video ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes! Putting all that work into preparing a meal just for her to throw it on the floor is the worst
It can be so frustrating!
7- nurse
8:30-breakfast
10:30-snack
12:30- lunch with whole milk
3:00- nurse
4:30- snack
6:30-dinner
7:30- nurse before bed
@@MeganAcuna could you also tell us his wake windows?
My baby is 7.5 months old. He basically eats anything I give him. One problem I am facing with BLW is my baby doesn't want to touch food. He wants to be fed instead. The second he touches the food he just let it go. Can you please give me any tips on that, if possible?
We didn’t struggle with this personally so I don’t have any tips on this one but your pediatrician should be able to help!
Thank you for replying though. I would ask my pediatrician.
At 5 to 6 months when starting blw when should we feed baby food after or before his milk time?
Meal refusal is the hardest for me. My almost 8 months old currently refuses all food. He was eating a bit but stopped around 1 week ago. Sooooo annoying.
We also got some good tips from solidstarts on Instagram!
My biggest tip is to keep trying different things, including things that are just to whet the appetite, like big, tough chunks of meat or even fruits or veggies that might be fun toys and then end up... Ya know... Kinda eating size. Also try preloaded forks.
Thank you, this was very helpful!
I would skip the snack all together --- BFing can count as the snack and fruit can be the snack when BFing is over
My cousin was so scared of their baby gagging that up until now they didn't have the courage to feed their baby again. Their child is 3 now and last time I heard, the child still refuses to eat solids and would only eat soft foods like tofu or mashed potatoes.
That's sad. LifeVac gave me the reassurance I needed to proceed
my baby is 9.5 months and not eating much. Rejecting most foods. Dont know what to do
How'd it go for you?
So useful!!!! Thankyou❤️❤️❤️
Hope you had a nice holiday
Thank you! We just got here yesterday and are having lots of fun!
Could you please elaborate more about milky water. My one year old and I are in the same situation and I am very worried as he cannot tolerate whole milk.
We added water to his milk to thin it out a little and help him get used to it and then slowly made it more milk until he was taking it plain!
@@Matt_Acuna thanks. Hope it works for us as well. Gonna give it a try.
They have a Dechoker called life vac. Check it out.
Did you start of blw with only one meal at first then add the full three meals?
I started offering whenever the older kids or I were eating. Baby nibbled here, refused there and eventually she'd eat herself to sleep. Lol
My baby is 6 month and we are about to start BLW. I am wondering how long should each feeding session be? 10 min? 20 min? or when baby lose interest in food?
As soon as baby loses interest it's over.
Smaller pieces are easier to accidentally swallow and choke on
Absolutely correct! Bigger is better! And LifeVac gave me the reassurance to go through with it.
Totally off topic, but where is your white shirt from?
Still cut it up or they will choke! Common sense!!
Where did you take the CPR class?
Online! Plenty of free ones.
Very helpful!!!!
Hey
Just curious we do blw too but wondering why you don’t fix him exactly what you eat and leave out extra salt?
I am scared to do this
Thanks. But consider that her child is older than one year. Younger babies cant eat peanut butter. There is too much salt.
Hi I'm katy ping and I'm disabled with a liver transplant and can we be best friends and can u do a night time routine with ur son
My baby is 10 months old ,have been feeding him with purees and now I'm shifting to BLW. Will it work ? I'm so worried 😳
Did you pay for solid starts guide? If so did you think it was worth it. If you didn’t did you wish you had?
I paid for the all access pass. The videos were SO helpful and gave me the confidence to start and know how to do BLW and my son is 8 months now and he’s doing great! The guides are moderately useful for meal ideas, but the app is super helpful and free! You can look up any food in the app and see serving size/choking and allergen information!
I’ve only used the free resources from them!
I think that baby LED weaning should only be started after consultation with pediatrician. My doctor told me not to do it unless I know how to give a first aid in case of choking. I think that many parents may not know about it and just start it without any precautions.
Your outfit looks cute, can you share it?
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Larger foods are usually actually safer for small babies! Here’s an article: solidstarts.com/why-bigger-foods-can-be-safer-for-young-babies/
@@MeganAcuna yes for 6-9months, but the section "how to serve" on the Solid Starts page (and app) recommends bite sized pieces for 9-12months for most of the foods I've searched. That's why I'm a bit confused now at 10months.
@@katerinailievska5673 We just go with our pediatrician’s guidelines :)
I’m so terrified of my baby choking she’s almost 8 months in 10 days
How long do you strictly breast feed for?
Our pediatrician recommended six months of exclusively breastfeeding, then introducing solids at six months while continuing to breastfeed several times a day for a year. We’re just weaning him now at 15 months.
@@MeganAcuna thanks so much for all your help and advice! ❤️❤️
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read about how to cook for a baby
Just curious, why wean him from your milk, just to give him the breast milk of a different species of mammal? That doesn’t sound like weaning…?
Because I’m exhausted, girl
