Cheers ! Peter.
This was great, Peter -- especially loved that jazz riff at the end. A helpful introduction to 6 string, for sure.
Thank you so much.
Hi Peter, maybe you wont remember me.I used to go to blackpool years ago,and remember Andy as 9 year old!I very much like the sound of your ukes especially the cutaway 4 string.I was in Honolulu in 1982 and spent a week of evenings wuth Herb Ohta.He used a Martin style 3 with low G and used a contact DE Armond pick up into a small Fender Amp (de lux?) with reverb.I recorded him using my (then) new walkman, and have the tapes. The next year my father was there and was hosted by a senior couple whom I had met there. They knew Kamaka personally and I had asked Dad to gety me a 6 string tenor. The boss PERSONALLY went through ALL his inventory and chose the best one they had.It is quite masgical soundwise, and I have also used a De Armond on it with 2 sided sticky fixers.George Harrison got one for Ray Bernard and presented it at Digswell. But I have to say mine is much better. It has the Kamaka set of strings. What are you doing these days? I play mostly guitar/vocals,but stull love to extend what the uke can do.Ave Maria, plus pieces I wrote in Chet Atkins style. So pleased that Andy is doind so well.Long may he continue.Pribably the busiest guy in show biz right now!If you send email I will try to get to you. There was another guy at same period as you who was v good, but cannot remember his name?... Best wishes Geoff Menzer
Wow! That was some beautiful music you were playing
Thanks, you have bags & bags of skills to do this demonstration. It helps my purchasing decision, I want to learn Spanish- strum techniques & this 6 string might sound excellent.
Astonishing completeness.
Thanks for sharing Peter. I appreciate it.
WOW ! Thank you for sharing this .
great video - really nice with the comparison between standard tuning vs. 6-string. Thank you
Wow, that sounds so cool!
Hello Domluke - A great question. I did consider a low "G" and if I were using it as a rhythm instrument, that would be my choice. However I intend to do solo melody and every other uke I own is re-entrant and don't want to start over with low G arrangements.
WOULD IT BE HARD TO PLAY THIS LIKE A GUITAR? MAYBE IF DIFFERENT GROOVES WHERE CUT FOR THE STRINGS? ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT TO GET? I WANT A GUITAR EXACTLY THIS SIZE LIKE 22"?
Interesting Pete. I revisited this video you made as I've a guitarlele lying ideal I'm not playing. I might just convert it to a 6 string uke in this configuration. It actually sound like 2 or 3 instruments are on the go. Don't know if you're still playing this uke.
I've had a Kala 5 string with high and low G for some years now which I love.
Unique!
Is it more difficult to play. I love the sound but am only a relative beginner
Yes - it is more difficult to play than 4 strings - But like everything, it’s practise.
Nice! Looking at a Kala 6 string. Thanks!
Nice - Kala make some really good ukes.
Hey Peter! Long time. Nice playing. And I love how you demonstrated the difference, both chordally, as well as picking it a bit.
I just picked up a 6-string myself today. I'm wondering about playing instrumental lines on this, and also whether I might try putting a low G on the 4th string?
Hi Jeff - great to hear from you. In answer to your question about the low G - yes, it would add more depth. If you tune to Bb like I have done here that G would become an F adding real depth. For me personally I prefer re entrant tuning when playing melody. However, if I was in a group of players, that extra depth would certainly add to the mix. 😊🎶😊
Hi Pete, I have a 6-string to the same configuration. It has a great sound, but having ‘issues’ with the finger picking thing. Do you pluck both double c’s and A’s or do you get selective. The full sound is beautiful, like you, mine was made to spec and it is a whole new world of full sound. Some days, I need convincing it was the right thing to create. Thanks for your post, it is reassuring…..
Hi Pamela. The extra 2 strings do take a bit of getting used to with both left and right hands. In answer to your question re:Fingerpicking, I pick the paired strings together as if they are one. I don't even think about it now as I have got used to it. However at first it was quite a struggle. The sound though is amazing. Thanks for your comment. Please check out some of my latest YT videos. I haven't changed a bit (not).
A canon from 🇫🇮!
I am quite surprised about how the uke is strung up, though. I have the paired a-strings on mine the other way around and quite frankly think this is standard. Is there a reasoning for doing it your way, Peter?
I was given the option and what I asked for is what was built. I used to own an 8 string that was set up different to the standard set up. I guess I wanted mine to sound that little bit different.
WoW!
Very nice indeed. What would be a good set of strings for this?
Hi good question. I made a hybrid set from strings I had in the house. However, if you go to a reputable ukulele supplier, they should sell 6 string sets.
Can you play this in a group of uke players playing gcea?
That's beautiful ❤️ I'm planning to buy KA-6 Tenor.. but can you please tell how you tunning it with the double string, like is the both string tuned as same string? Like both "C" strings and "A" strings?
Whats the name of the song you were playing??
I want to know as well
Wouldn't it be better with a low G ?
Thanks for the demo. Why is it tuned to Bb?
Hi Tom. Thanks for your question. I spent a good few hours tuned in C.Although it worked it sounded to thin and tiny. As an experiment I dropped everything 2 frets in pitch and it came "alive".
@@PeterMossUkulele Thanks Peter. That makes sense.
I play a 5 string with C tuning and I love how the low G opens up the sound. Ukuleles are great!
@@tombrooks4167 They sure are Tom.
Hi Peter!
What type of strings did you end up purchasing? I’m taking mine in for a pickup install and want to replace the strings while it’s there. Thanks for the help!
Bill Collier - Hey Bill. It’s actually a blend from the strings it came with, living water and Aquila
Apologies for all typos below
If building one of these, does the double string go to the left or right of the main string?
This is how I set mine up (string 1 being the string nearest my toes and string 6 nearest to my nose) and if GCEA tuning.
String 1 - is a regular A
String 2 - is 1 octave below string 1 (A)
String 3 - is a regular E
String 4 - is a regular C (some tune this 1 octave above the regular C)
String 5 - is a regular C
String 6 - is a regular G
Sometimes I tune the whole instrument 2 Frets down from the regular tuning making it F Bb D G
I hope this helps. Peter.
Hello !i ordered by mistake a ukalele 6 strings and i'm a beginner so now i don't know where to find chords for this guitar..would you help me please?otherwise can i use the same chords with a big guitar?
Hi - So you can use the same ukulele chord shapes. However if this is your first ukulele, maybe you should have started with a 4 stringed variety?
Same chords that guitar has??
Although there are 6 strings, 2 of them are in pairs of the same note, and placed close to each other similar to a Mandolin - although the Mandolin has 8 strings and 4 pairs of 2. If you can play guitar chords on strings 1-4 (D G B E) those shapes will work on a 6 string ukulele. However because the tuning/pitch is different, the chord names will need to also change to the tuning/pitch of the ukulele.
Do you have to write your own chord chart? OR Is there a Bb chord chart out there? I've looked some but not Bb chart so far, not labeled Bb anyways...
Thank you for your question. I do everything by ear and no charts. The chords and arrangements I am playing are using the same shapes as when I tune GCEA. But of course the shapes cannot have the same chord names when transposed 2 frets lower in pitch. F Bb D G. Again I can tune to Baritone DGBE and use the same shapes but transposed lower by 5 frets in pitch. To Clarify a C Major in GCEA would become a Bb Major in F Bb D G and it would be a G Major in DGBE. Peter.
I just got a Lanakai 6 string Ukulele same configuration as yours with the double on the 3rd and 1st string. Did you have to change strings to tune down to Bflat tunning?
Hello!
Nice experience :-)
What brand, and what serie (reference in...) of strings did you choose please ?
Because I am deeply interested to make an experience with this personal tuning arragement gG - cC - E - a... ;-)
Best Regards, and thank you for answer...
I want to set up my uke with a low G, what sequence would you recommend for the rest of the strings? g C c E A a????
Take the regular re-entrant tuning (High G) and swap that string for a low G. The other strings remain the same.
@@PeterMossUkulele response makes sense for a 4 string, but what about a 6 string? low G, low C then high C OR low G, high C then low C.?
Currently my 2 A strings are tuned the same.
@@atwoodka The video was made using the following High G- normal C- normal C again- normal E-low A and high A.
Your options are to make one of the C’s an octave lower. And/Or replace the first high G with a low G
My 6 string ukulele is set up single/pair/single/pair. I hope that helps. Peter.
@@PeterMossUkulele - awesome, yes much clearer. Thank you. Great playing BTW!
Thank you. Where is your rough location?@@atwoodka
I have uploaded a couple of new things to You Tube ukulele related. Here is one of them ruclips.net/video/Az40MBArHgQ/видео.html
Hey, if you remember, what was the first progression you played?
My Late father taught me this. Each had 4 beats to it. However it could have other options, 2 beats or 3 beats for a waltz or 5 beats for some progressive 5/4 practise. I also used the same chord set for learning fingerpicking patterns. so, here goes...... C - C7- F - G7 - REPEAT THEN... C - E7 - F - A7 - D7 - G7 - C - The final C could be 1 strum or 5
Peter Moss Do you remember the chords? Thank you in advance!
I have written them out below - so yes, I remember the chords.
***** Oh. I didn't see them before. Thank you!
@@PeterMossUkulele and the jazzy bit at the end? Chords please
We cant see your ukulele
