I love your own personal way you present these games.
29:55 "Who knows where Sevro is? It's a big ol' thick deck of cards".
Just top decks Sevro as the next card. 🤣
This game is going to be great! Can’t wait to get it. Nice run through Rahdo!!
Love how much thematic thought went into the deploy abilities and the end game scoring bonuses. I am on the 3rd book of the trilogy and it all makes so much sense. What an achievement!
Everytime Rahdo says 'Servo' I am shouting 'Sevro'
i clealry couldn't get mystry science theater 3000 out of my head :)
I shouted tooooo hahaha
Yep, and he also called DE-ANNA, DEE-NA…
Au Toma being a gold is just something else, I like that detail, I thought it was just a corrupted version of saying automaton
Awesome runthrough, Rahdo! Also, the fact that your very first turn was putting Darrow with Mustang was such a great coincidence. I know that you said you haven't read the books, but they are THE couple of the series! :)
i guess it was meant to be!
Mickey The Carver is a sort of plastic surgeon who changes a red (character) into a gold... very thematic
At 30:15 I think you missed to grab the benefit of Jupiter which is to move your fleet.
Besides that: Awesome playthrough as always!
It was already noted on the Klingon subtitles, like Richard asked at the start of the video, please Turn On the Klingon subtitles to see on the scree when he makes goofs (in this or in any other video on the channel, even if he doesn't ask for it like in older videos, they all have the goofs in the Klingon subtitles)
Thanks for the play through Richard. I had to double check that I had Klingon subtitles turned on because you barely made any mistakes!
there must be a mistake here, to say i didn't make many mistakes! paulo needs to search harder!
You would have loved the books Richard! But I’m hoping for a movie series that you can watch in the future 😁
Listen to the audiobooks if you don’t have time to read them. Worth your time for sure!
It’s crazy how different this game seems to play at different player counts. This solo mode puts sooo many different cards in play. 4+ the board game state changes so much between turns that it becomes insanely tactical and introduces AP. I did feel I enjoyed (watching anyway) the 2 player best.
At around the 30:17 point, wouldn't you have gained one on the Fleet track for gaining a card from Jupiter?
Agreed
Was about to comment so myself.
note added... thanks
Very Fantasy Realms like game! But I love FR so I guess I will love this also.
"...titular lead of the books..." This word 'titular', I don't think it means what you think it means.
Darrow is indeed the protagonist of 'Red Rising', but his name isn't anywhere in the title of any of the books, so he's not the titular character. Examples of titular characters: Macbeth, Robocop, Alfie... you get the idea.
Reading the first book now and it's phenomenal. Had it on my Kindle for a long time and a friend from my board gaming group was like, "You gotta read it!" like a couple weeks before this game was announced. It was cool to be literally days away from starting it and see this announcement from one of our favorite designers.
And just to let you know, it was very thematic appropriate you putting Darrow on top of Mustang at the Institute. Funnily enough I'm at the point in the book where those two are alone together at that location.
Thanks for the playthrough! Very excited for this one!
yeah, i do know better, but i often say titular when i mean lead. can't help it :)
@@rahdo Yeah, I figured you knew, just couldn't help but do the appropriate Princess Bride quote :P. Isn't odd how our brain finds little word pairings that it favors, regardless of accuracy? On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are certain words that my brain absolutely refuses to make part of my vocabulary.
You guys are gonna love 'Red Rising', by the way. It's like 'Gattaca', 'The Hunger Games', and 'Ender's Game' all rolled into one beautiful entity that also serves as something of a primer on Greek/Roman mythology and the differences between the two.
This game is such a treat for the book readers.
Not sure how? I don’t feel the theme coming through at all. It could have been about anything.
@@ilqrd.6608 Card actions, scoring, synergies. In all cards I was like yeah that effect fits or yeah those two cards want to be together.
The ebb and flow of alliances the risk sending powerful allies into the field for a great effect but chance to lose them.
It just feels right for me.
I am just wondering what would prevent a player from continuing to Scout every turn and accumulate more cards which may get them points each time? Is there any hand limit in the game? Thanks.
Nevermind… I just checked the rulebook and that is a completely HORRIBLE strategy, because you lose 10 points PER CARD for each card beyond the 7th card that you have left in your hand at the end of the game.
probably something i should have mentioned in the video :)
@@rahdoually, you did mention it - later on… @ 20:08 - After I had paused the video to look at the rules :)
Many thanks for this solo (mini) playthrough. Did you manage to win from Tull Au Toma ?
tbh i didn't finish. always having to move on to the next game to film!
Realize you aren't familiar with the source material. This isn't a Brett Favre situation, SeVRo in pronounced phonetically. I.E., Not SeRVo.
The i doesn't have Final Thoughts in it (yet)
thanks for the heads up, not sure how that got overlooked. fixed now :)
You forgot to update your Final Thoughts link in the description
thanks for heads up, fixed now :)
This seems like Fantasy Realms on steroids and I am intrigued.. I don't like the Take That aspect though.
Fantasy Realms was the main influence. Apparently there aren't many attack cards and you can take them out if you wish.
@@Stormlight8700 I'm worried that some of the other cards will then feel useless. There seem to be quite a bit of those defender cards as well.
@@Azecap True. I've not played this yet. Hopefully it won't affect the balance too much.
I like that if a card does feel a bit useless to me, I can just get rid of it tactically and gain a reward.
@@Stormlight8700 But the protectors don't give you benefits for putting them out.
@@Azecap Good point. They seem to be worth lots of points though. So either keep for the points or discard for just the location bonus...
I sort of like the game play. Wish it was a Dune theme instead. But I don't like the scoring. I'd need a calculator to tally the final score.
Perhaps might be tricky in some cases but generally they try to make the combination pairs divisible by 5. So for example you might have a card with a core value of 13 who if paired correctly will gain an extra 17 points for a a total of 30.
Wasn't this supposed to be a live runthrough (probably 2p with Jen) ?
yeah, originally i was going to do it live with jen, but after i played the game, i figured it wouldn't make for a good experience since there's so much hidden information and we wouldn't be able to talk much about the through process that goes into picking cards and whatnot.
plus, feb turned out to be shorter than i thought so scheduling it was going to be tough. so i pushed the monthly live playthrough into first week of march, and right now i'm *thinking* about doing the sleeping gods arcade mode, which no one seems to be covering, and it's a way i could demo the game without story spoilers :)
@@rahdo good idea. I really dont think this game would have lent itself well to your style of playthrough. I can just picture Jen crushing you if you had to tell the audience all your moves 😅
wait wait wait wait... cards above 7 only lose you 10 points? some cards are worth 40, so I'll take the +30 every day of the week... feels odd
no card is worth 40 points unless you can achieve it's requirements, and the more cards you have, the harder it is to achieve them all :)
@@rahdo I know but still... among all them cards you'll probably find a good one I guess... dunno, would have to play it before judging of course, but since the stonemaier games I tried always had quite a few balance issues, I guess that triggered my worried bell
@@pcpandemic3394 Some of the requirements are like 'have every character start with a different letter', 'don't be with golds', etc... So some of them might end up scoring you less then 10, or even costing you way more if they negate other scoring. So curating the best hand possible is the goal, not necessarily 'more'.
@@babydemon90 yeah but more cards you meet the conditions for the more points you get. would have to play to judge it, but that rule right there has me sus
Yeah, most times a card will give you more points than 10. I have played (only at 2 players) several times now and almost always more cards is better. The -10 past 7 cards is to level off the points for big hands, but still worth it to get cards (at least if they are worth at least 11 points - not just intrinsically on the card itself but also how it synergizes with other cards for points in your hand).
I feel like years back I may have bought this game but at this point it's definitely a no. Thanks again for the help
22:22 Dee-na?? That's Dee-Anna! (Deanna). Also - Ser-vo?? It's Sev-ro (Sevro). Richard, pronunciation!
Loved the video. Cringed every time you said “servo” instead of Sevro
clearly i couldn't get mystery science 3000 out of my head! :)
when does the draconian embargo lift for the final thoughts?
today, i've already made them public. and i don' think i'd call them draconian. most publishers would simply not incur the extra cost to send out advance copies so early... most pubs would get you the game a the same time as it goes into public, so there's no advance window to cover the game.
I found it really odd how the automa accumulates cards, I feel they would be unbeatable, as thera are no Klingon subtitles as the moment I will assume I misunderstood something about how the automa gets points at the end. But the game seems awesome to me, some sort of Lost Cities/Mandala/Gizmos/splendor killer. ;)
Edit: ok, I jumped the gun a bit, you explain at ten very end how the automa gets their points. ;)
It's a lesson on commenting midway through the video.
one thing i forgot to mention is that the automa is pegged at 20 cards in its collection. at the end, it has to get rid of excess (starting with its 3vp cards), so it only scores 3 or 6 points for up to 20 cards, plus the base 70 it's got, plus points for the 3 metrics. so that puts it in the the realm of competitive but not impossible to beat :)
If someone wants a simpler card game with end-game hand-scoring, look at Fantasy Realms.
Jamey Steigmaier talks about Fantasy Realms in most top-10 he does that include card games. It was only a matter of time until y tried his hand a implementing a Fantasy Realms variation.
Boring, with "take that" cards? No thanks! But thank you for saving me money!
I so hate solo mode play throughs. I want to know how the real game plays
pretty much exactly like this with other players taking and leaving cards rather than an automated player taking and leaving cards :)
