    Lifting scientifically has changed everything for me. And, contrary to prevailing sentiment, it has sucked precisely 0 fun out of lifting, as far as I'm concerned.

      Really a personality thing, for some, optimizing what you do and learning about *why* and *how* things are scientifically optimal or not is a boring chore, and for others it’s a passion and lights up their brain in a good way.
      That’s what really got me into training consistently as well is that instead of it being purely physical busywork, it’s something that challenges my mind and intrigues me to learn which keeps me coming back for more

      The difference is he's failing with 15lbs with the best form for hypertrophy which he can muster. He could easily throw that weight around and do more reps if he was focusing on strength.
      Most people who claim they're doing 25's or something are most likely on steroids for a while, or they've got very bad technique in regards to muscle growth. If all they want is strength, then all power to them. But they can't complain their muscles aren't growing.

    Jeff's point about there existing a point where muscular fatigue just physically won't let you do another rep is correct in theory. But in practice I've seen soldiers break through plateus in selection that seemed completely impossible. You're just never going to replicate the stress response in the gym that you get from true desperation.
    To give one example, day one of selection there was a cut off: if you can't do 30 pushups (with full gear) you're out. This was completely rested and most did it comfortably, but this one guy barely sqeeked out the last one. Like we're talking the last rep took like 15 seconds.
    Then just three days later, after pretty much no sleep, no food and constant physical badgering for the entire time the sargeant drops this bomb: same test, anyone under 50 is out. With the accumulated fatigue there was not a single one of us who wasn't terrified that they would fail out. It just seemed impossible. But the kicker was this time we had 3 instructors literally screaming at us for the entire time to push through.
    Every single one of us passed. And I'll never forget seeing the guy who just a few days earlier completely rested had barely done 30, now completely covered in mud and shivering from the cold fucking powering through to 50 and somehow a lot more convincingly. And mind you, this was still not a real fight or flight response from a do or die situation.
    It fundamentally changed my view of what our bodies are actually capable of, and no matter how good you are at pushing in the gym you will probably never reach true physiological failure.

You see someone getting abused, kidnapped, beat, or raped and you should just walk away from it because it happens everyday? It could be your kid, mom, dad, close friend, wife, husband, etc and you wouldn’t want someone to step in if they could? There are so many things wrong with this logic. Nah the drug response from the body is very real. I've trained to failure hundreds of times and beyond many. With adrenaline in my system I could have done more reps, but if you also put me under immense stress and anxiety with my life on the line in a dangerous environment I think I would either just match the reps that I did on adrenaline or maybe crap out earlier due to the immense stress. Either way, your muscles will run out of resources regardless of mentality and determination. The drugs released by the body are what makes it possible, not the mentality. It is just PEDs making you more capable. You can reach a state of mind that makes you want to train insanely hard just for fun, you will be crazy tired after though.

      Tricep muscles act as stabilizers, primarily for the shoulders, during pull ups and rows. They are involved during lowering (eccentric) portion of the pull up and row and they also flex your elbow. You will feel more of the long head with wide grip pull ups.

    • @gracefool
      @gracefool 2 месяца назад +14

      How do y'all not know this? The long head performs shoulder extension. Sure it's not working maximally but it is noticeably working and if you did absolutely nothing else for triceps but pullups you would still have significant long head development (albeit far from your potential).
      You can increase the stress on the lats and long head a bit by pulling yourself behind the bar rather than going straight up.
      If you really want to prove it to yourself, do lying pullovers. Even without your elbow moving, and in any elbow position, it czn be a great long head exercise.

    • @Karsius1
      @Karsius1 2 месяца назад +30

      @@gracefool This is like saying squats work the hamstrings and you'll get significant hamstring development if you only do squats because the hamstrings perform hip extension

    • @gracefool
      @gracefool 2 месяца назад +3

      @Karsius1 no, with squats the hamstring has minimal tension at every point because as the hip extends the knee also extends and the hamstring stays the same length. Whereas with pullups the long head significantly helps the beginning of the pull where the lats and biceps are in their weakest (fully stretched) position.
