My favourite detail about barrett in the remake iis the way they use his Sunglasses to convey when he's acting tough and when he's being honest and vulnerable. He wears them throughout the entirety of the first mission even on the train back to secotr 7 but when he's talking to Cloud about how the people living in the slums are trapped living in their poor conditions he takes them off, he also has them off in every seen where he is talking about or with Marlene. It's a subtle detail but a great use of a prop to convey character.

Maybe its just me too, but Barret has the most soulful, deep and compassionate eyes of any characters. The glasses cover that, because when he takes it off, you can see this gentle face with deep, soft eyes under it. The sunglasses are part of his mask, hiding the real Barret under them.

I said this in a stream of FF7R: "Barrett has three modes: Angry, Very Angry, and Father".
But it's more accurate to say that Barrett's main modes are Bravado, Very Angry, and Father, with nuances in between.
They did a REALLY good job on expanding Barrett and Tifa in the Remake.
Also... random aside: I want to know why Merle has a swordsmanship manual just lying around.

I always loved Barret. He was a permanent member of my group in FF7 way back - even the one to save my save-less run by defeating Sephiroth with his ultimate while Cloud and Cid were out of commission. Yeah, he didn't really get much beyond some of his backstory and comical scenes aside that, but he still was easily my top character alongside Cid to bring along for everything. With that said I am ecstatic that Barret gets some proper screen time in the remake. Will give everyone a good reason to love him even more.

I loved the way they did the elevator scene, primarily how bombastic Barrett sounds while talking about shinra, he sounds like a conspiracy theorist, but not in a bad way, he just like conspiracy theorists are more emotional than based in logic, which makes the whole are we actually the bad guys narrative more believable with the inclusion of the whole bomb problem with Jessie.
Also Barrett only wears those sunglasses to protect us from his beautiful eyes that could hypnotize vampires.

i agree but sadly as for many character of the game, they lose meaning while the story goes on, they will only be "people that follow to help" not much sadly.
Barret only has his arc with dyne , except that , if he is in the game or not nothing changes.
Same goes for yuffie, after you do wutai she is there for basically no reason. while character like tifa, red and vincent has more reason to stay until the end. Also Cid make more sense since he will be the pilot of highwind. But i can't really find any use for yuffie or barret in the story after their personal arc.
Yuffie is my second favorite character so i don't say this based on taste or whatever but pure logic.
Barret is cool for the first Cd of ff7 but after he is more like a "i'm there so i just follow" , i hope they will change that in the remake and give all character some actual meaning to stay there.

Personally, Barrett in the original felt like a side character from the start, despite being the catalyst of the early game's events. Here, he feels like the protagonist, while Cloud feels like the side character. Over time, the transition happens and Cloud is front and center, but Barrett definitely shines in the remake.

(also debatable) Yea they just get casted off as side character who are just there for the right and serve no true purpose honestly. Barrett not so much because his character continues to grow so so much even after disc 1 and he’s pretty much the backbone of the team

Actually this is his only phrase which I disagree with. It is just to fanatic. With this same logic, all people on earth are sinners because they drive their cars, or use plastic, because it is a sin for the planet. And Barret's logic says that to repent, you must totally stop using any of these which is simply ridiculous. In this sense, he is asking of thousands of employees to lose their jobs and send themselves and their families homeless because they work at an evil company. Things aren't that simple

@@serenityssolace its true though. Every action has a consequence. We are depleting the Earth's resources and the pollution we create will, by our best scientific estimates, affect the world negatively for centuries and millenia. Of course we think it's okay because we are accustomed to our standard of living. But is it really? If our Earth turns into an uninhabitable hellscape in the future will those generations look so charitably on us? Barrett is 100% right that we have to come to this realization on our own and accept the fact that we as a society are ok with it.

You need a car to get to work, you need to work in a plant that pollutes the land to make money, you need money to not die and to keep people and things you care for safe. It's not the fault of the worker that they have to pollute the world with a car or that their work hurts the environment, they're forced to do that in order to protect what they love and to stay alive. Not everyone is like cloud, they cant just move on and keep going where they want without any restraints and commitments. A lot of people are like barret, they have things they care for, children to raise, people to protect and most people are not able to just do those things without abiding to a system that actively profits from the destruction of the planet. @@Aleczandxr I totally agree that Barrett is very determined, brave, empathetic but also very naive individual when it comes to actual ambitions and goals
One major issue I have with AVALANCHE is that they don't have clear political ideas or ambitions for Post-Shinra society, as their methods of sabotaging Mako reactors is mostly short-term fixes to a problem that requires very long term solutions and ideas.
I think this is best reflected in Advent Children, where after the fall of Shinra AVALANCHE did developer any important structures or institutions to replace Shinra and instead Reeve Tuesti with his experience and some funds from Rufus had to rebuild society after the meteor event.
While I can understand Barrett acting on his emotional and instinctual anger at injustice he does come off as very naive for more politically intelligent.

"A good man who serves a great evil is not without sin. He must recognize and accept his complicity."- Barret, Final Fantasy 7 Another person used this quote in the comments, and you did as well.
    : Spoilers :
But there is another layer of this, and it ties into his own history with Shinra and his home town of Correl. Originally, the town he lived in was a coal mining town, but due to the shortage of coal in their mines, the town itself had fallen on hard times. Shinra, at the time, showed up wishing to create a reactor, promising jobs and prosperity for the town of Correl. Barret was one of the people that SUPPORTED Shinra making the reactor, in hopes of reviving the living conditions of his own. One of his best friends, Dyne, did not trust Shinra, but the townspeople agreed with Barret. Not long afterward, Shinra did as they had to Reactor 1, claiming terrorist action on the townspeople's behalf, and sent in soldiers to "passify" them. Dyne and Barret both were shot on a cliff-face, both losing an opposite arm, and eventual replacing it with a gun. Dyne supposedly fell to his death, but was instead imprisoned near Gold Saucer. Mind you, imprisoned was a bit of a misnomer, as he could leave the complex, and shoot up Gold Saucer to later frame Barret when the team came there during the original game.
Point is, Barret's quote applies to himself not necessarily in service of Avalanche, but himself serving SHINRA once upon a time, and now flawed as his path is, it's the one he feels is HIS ONLY way to redeeming himself for failing his hometown. It makes his character THAT MUCH MORE TRAGIC, as he feels trapped on his path, not merely tunnel visioned, but honestly unable to think of any other way due to the "sins" of his past. Add to that Dyne's daughter, who now calls Barret "Papa", he can only see the path forward from a limited perspective, because of the sheer pain he pushes through just to do this much every day.
I agree, Barret is a beautifully flawed character, but the scope and depth of him is easily missed without further knowledge of him. As the original story showed, with time he did grow and learn, though mostly I'd say he learned to listen to those with better learning and thinking abilities than himself, and contribute where he could. Now, in this Brave, New world, who knows where his character will grow? I for one, can't wait to see!

I am so grateful to finally have one well developed video on our dear Barret and even more from you Alex for I really appreciate your content for a long time now.
I have not played the FF7R yet, but had occasions to replay original FF7 recently. It's especially with adult eyes that you see how well written this character is. Actually he's a real adult in this franchise which is pretty rare in FF franchise, and I mean by that not the mentor adult set to help the main character progress like Auron or Thela in FF IV, but an adult with objectives, struggles and a vision on the world for and by himself. When you think of it, this game has 4 real adults in your team despite being designed for kids to teenagers - Barret, Cid, Vincent and Reeves via Caith Sith.
He really is relatable because his motivations are not artificially dragged by the main character, it's rather the opposite, Barret is the one who drags Cloud into his adventure, into his actions.
Sure after the Midgar arc Cloud takes the lead because at that time things get anyway too dangerous for them to stay in Midgar and they already figured out a future major danger would come from Sephiroth / Jenova going to the Promised Land.
Barret steps back on his authority figure when the team leaves Midgar because he knows what they were doing so far, frontly attacking Shinra and killing people would lead nowhere, and at that time Cloud has (well, rather thinks he has :) ) a pretty good understanding of the situation. And well, he must still feel utterly guilty for the loss Jesse, Biggs and Wedge.
Barret's choices and actions are those of a man who really tries the hardest to do his best, and having success as well as loss and defeat, and makes mistakes. And no one is here to tell him what to do or what is right, he can only rely on himself.
To me he's a pure portrait of heroism, sure motivated by revenge but trying his best to make his revenge... Make sense. And man in FF7 journey he's struggled and suffered terrible loss just like Cloud in the whole game, especially with the desert prison arc where he has to defeat Dayne.
This character is a pure addition to the many qualities this game has. I really like his interactions with Cid and Caith Sith.

I actually love the first Bombing Mission I think the elevator scene does a good job contrasting Cloud with Barret and they both have different strengths and weaknesses. Barret doesn't trust Cloud because Cloud doesn't work or is fueled by Passion, Cloud has his own issues, but he is able to take a more distant and Objective view of the situation, and think about mid term consequences. "I'd worry less about the planet and more about the next five seconds." The reason Cloud even agreed (The Merc thing is really just a mask.) Is A. He is familiar with How Shinra hurts PEOPLE and B. A childhood friend asked him to do it. Also notice when Cloud and Barret do try to support people they do it in different ways, Barret does it with his Bullish Charisma and showing how much he deeply cares, Cloud tries to offer a more quiet and reserved strength, as if he is a calm in a storm, while Barret idea of strength is a Dynamo to keep moving forward, Cloud's is a brief Pause to collect oneself. (He tells Tifa to take a deep breathe and tries to "listen" to her.) It also shows there weaknesses, Cloud has trouble expressing himself and letting himself get deeply involved, while Barret gets so involved in his feelings he forgets about everything else.

  • @squeakydeedsdonesoapclean3719

I think the game has subtly been implying through Cloud's side quests, that people can come to agree to help with your goals if you just help them out first and demonstrate your good intentions. You see this as people change their attitude towards Cloud as he completes more side quests. Moreover, it demonstrates just how interdependent people are, how Cloud came to have more resources to fill in the gaps in his abilities as he made connections.
I see the fact that Cloud is an ex-Soldier, defecting from the Shinra corporation, and the fact that he's achieving his needs through achieving those of others as inherently the argument against Barret's approach. Cloud has even become increasingly convinced that there is a greater good he needs to fight for because of Barret, what Barret needs to figure out, is that he can actually trust people to be convinced of what he's trying to get them to take seriously and act decisively on.

Love barret, he was so underused in the original in terms of being recognised as a serious character, what with cloud, aerith, tifa and Vincent always at the forefront of fandom.
But he's just such a great character, tough as nails on the outside, but inside is deep, caring, protective of those he cares about and would do anything to protect his daughter.

I love how Cloud is so stiff and over the course of the story he learns to loosen up, just a bit. (In general. I'd play a game with a main character like Barret any day of the week, for every waking hour until I finished it. I absolutely love him and his attitude. He's a good man, a nurturing and protective father and just straight up nigh incorruptible because of where his values lay. You cannot bribe a man who would die to give a loved one a single more day to live. Shinra tried it in the game and we saw quickly what happened there.
My "canon" playthrough of this game will be Cloud, Barret and Cid. As it always was and as it always will be. All three are leaders; Cloud a leader of the main group. Barret a leader of a part of the resistance and Cid, who was trusted to lead in the groups most dire and desperate of times.. and succeeded. Everyone else is support. IMPORTANT support and make *no* mistake about it. Nothing would be possible without them, but the real enabling was good leadership.
Barret is way, way up there on my favorite characters of all time. It brings me so much joy that they did him justice in FF7 Remake. He feels exactly like he should.. but he has more time to open up and show us that there's more to him than bravado and tough talk. The chat outside Aerith's home, which I am happy to say I got and is the one I prefer over Tifa and Aerith's talks, really gave you an idea of his true character. He's a loving father, a caring friend. Maybe naive, but he trusts people have the best of intentions.. even if he doesn't give away that trust easily as we can see with Cloud. He'd never trust Cloud if not for Tifa vouching for him. Because trusting Cloud could bring harm to his crew and friends.
I can't wait to see what they do more with him. FF7 seems now to have gone in a different direction than the original - which I am perfectly fine with. The endgame is the same, but what happens in the middle can be anything. This game is a re-imagining of the game, not just a remake. I can't wait to see what happens when they meet Cid (though that is not the upcoming "disc" and probably won't be for another three, four years). There's just so much to look forward too.

They really made Barret 100% more likeable than he was in the original. Even if you did like his character, they went up and beyond to ensure Barret's character stands out. Not to mention that Marlene helps to sell this too since you can see just how much he cares about her. Yeah, you can love a kid you are caring for, but it's another to see Barret actually going into detail in knowing what color dress Marlene was wearing on a certain day (and how after knowing that she's upstairs and is told "DON'T RUN!" you see him quietly go upstairs).

A bit spoilery for those who haven't played the original, but:
What I love about Barret's line at 21:09 is that he's really talking about himself in more ways than one. Its not just about his recent actions. He's projecting his past mistakes, how he used to trust and even defend Shinra, onto his perception of Shinra employees. As if they are supposed to KNOW they serve a "great evil". Because it validates himself in trying to "redeem" himself. The fact of the matter is he still carries the guilt for his compliance that led to the exploitation and ultimate destruction of his hometown at the hands of Shinra. The focused aggression of his retaliation against Shinra is ultimately a retaliation against himself and his own guilt.

  • @WatcherPrime
    @WatcherPrime 2 года назад +2

Another thought on the 'great evil' line. It isn't served with the same intensity as the rest of his preaching. Given his backstory in the original game, I think that bit of "Gospel" is more for him as he was the guy that pushed his village to cooperate and get a mako reactor online.
