god i wish my teacher would have taught this. Instead she LITERALLY refused to teach me when i asked for help and instead humiliated me infront the whole class and in doing so helped to create the mindset in me that i shouldn't even try learning math seriously. Now i'm here years (like 20+) later trying to prep for an entrance exam. Sometimes i do get bitter about how different my school experience could have been with a teacher that actually did their literal JOB.

    759+496
In cases like this you can also just take approx values like let's say 759 is 760 and 496 is 500. So you add 760+500 which is 1260 BUT we took approx values so just subtract , in this case we added 4 digits to 496 and 1 digit to 759 , thats a total of 5 digits we need to get rid off , so answer is 1255.

Left to right and compliment approach is something new for me but adding or subtracting larger chunks first and then add/subtract the remaining is something I have been doing for very long time. I didn't learn it from anywhere but it is something that was logical and most people do similar thing. Like chunks of 100s, 50s, 25s, 10s, 5s first then add/subtract the remaining.

He is a beast in mathematics, not only in the subject of math but also in his lifestyle, i guess!!

The way I did the first problem fast and actually got it (I’m relatively practiced with mental math and generally considered really fast with it) is 7+4=11, 5+9=14, 110+14=124, 9+6=15, 1240+15= *1255*

I have been doing maths in my head this way my whole life. Nobody taught me, I kinda naturally tend to add from left to right. It just feels more natural and easier. I thought everybody did maths this way, but after going through this comment section, I am surprised to see how many people do math in their head just the way they do on paper. But I'm still not fast though.

I would make it "even easier", ... as I would note that 496 is short of 500 by 4, ... so I would add 500 to 759, ... an easy addition resulting in 1259, ... and then reduce it mentally by 4, obviously, since 496 is four less than 500, ... resulting in 1255. And that all happens in a "split second", ... a "blink of an eye", so to speak.
Oh, I didn't watch enough of the video, ... I see where you gave that same analysis at about 3:15 into the video.
Actually, you are not creating an "illusion" that you are faster than a calculator, ... you are faster than a calculator, ... because it takes a little time to punch in the numbers, and the mathematical operators, and then the "equal" sign.

While not mental math I observed some fast math in Japan in 1965. I was in the Navy and the ship stopped in Japan for a few days, so I went shopping mostly in electronics stores. The salespeople in the Japanese stores were not using calculators but abacuss. I knew what an abacus was but had never seen one used. These Japanese had been using them since childhood and were masters at it. I could not believe how fast they could move those beads on the abacus and have a mathematical answer. It was as you say faster than a calculator.

5:44 66-39 dont subtract just think , what should i add 39 to reach 66. think 39 is 40 . add 26 to get 66, then dont forget to add 1. it would be 26+1=27 . addition is easier than subtraction.
